Hey YouTube welcome back to my channel today I’m going to talk about the misconception of black sororities and the reason why I’m doing this video is because somebody asked me to I’m just gonna be honest but I wanted to bring it up as a topic of discussion mainly
Because it’s a lot going on in social media when dealing with the vine line organizations you have so many platforms out there for people to just go on and say whatever they want Greek or not and then people either accepted are you with it or just not pay attention to it so it
Was brought up as a topic of discussion mainly because I think that a lot of people kind of do have a misconception about Greek life particularly black Greeks and what we’re all about and what we do speaking from my own personal experience when I joined Sigma Gamma Rho
It was a whole bunch of us that joined spring 2012 organizations so it was a big group of us we were all friends when we crossed so we ended up being good friends after we crossed or we were friends before we crossed we ended up being good friends after we crossed so
We did a lot of stuff together and it was all of us basically all in divine 9 was on the yard at one time spring 2012 at USC and it was amazing so of course because all of us were together people wanted more from us and by more I mean
Performances and by people I mean non-greeks as well as IFC and NPC let’s talk about them for a second so when I was an undergrad I kind of felt like I was in a show and if I show I mean like I was basically a how do i how do I put
This we were basically like on call to perform whenever Greek life Exodus to and typically I wouldn’t have a problem with that however my issue with that is that’s not all what we’re about yes as a member of a sorority and as my fellow members of attorneys
Would say we’re not just here just to step in the show that’s not what we’re all about it’s a part of our culture it’s a part of my history or it became part of our history over time but originally that is not what divine 9 was created for we were created as academic
Societies most of us so we’re basically academic fraternities and sororities who also step and stroll as part of our culture as part of what makes us different from NPC and IFC so my issue with being in a black sorority and being in a predominantly white campus or to
Have people on the outside looking in is when they look at divine nine organizations they think of us as just show show boaters or showman where we’re here to put on the show we’re here to entertain you we’re here to step in the stroll and you get excited about it
That’s not all we’re about we have high standards just like everybody else we have GPA requirements we have community service requirements and we have meetings and networking and all these other financial requirements that your organization is required to be a Greek or not B it is C MPC or not okay so now
I’m over my spiel of divine nine organizations in general let’s talk about the misconceptions of black sororities so apart from people thinking that we’re just here to step and stroll people also think that we’re loud and obnoxious depending on the organizations that they’re familiar with they think that we’re loud
Bougie stuck-up obnoxious earthy and that they’ll use that as a stigma or they’ll use that as a stereotype to describe us first of all let me say I think every woman in every organization being Alpha Kappa Alpha Delta Sigma Theta Simonet Merle or Zeta Phi Beta we are educated women and we’re all
Beautiful in our own way and I think to place those stereotype on a sorority based off of a hint of truth or based off of something that somebody saw I won’t put a time and they just accepted it as truth and then used it for the whole history of the organization I
Don’t think that’s correct and I also think that people don’t fully do their research like every tells them to this Greek before making a comment on the sorority themselves yeah we all have our moments where we take pride in those stereotypes that people have created about us but majority of
The time I don’t think that it’s entirely true there are beautiful women in Sigma Gamma Rho just like there are beautiful women in Delta Sigma Theta alpha kappa alpha and Zeta Phi Beta there are smart women in satify beta as there are smart women in Sigma Gamma Rho
There are rambunctious women of Alpha Kappa Alpha just like they’re around book she’s women of Delta Sigma Theta Zeta Phi Business in the Gamma Rho it’s a mixture of people and it’s a mixture of culture and I think that people don’t fully understand that and then I also
Think that the reason that people are part of makes an impression on them too because chapters are going to be bigger in certain regions like our largest chapter is in Chicago we’re very big in the Northeast area and we’re very big up north however down south does Sigma Theta and
Ask Kappa Alpha are very big those are the only organizations that I knew about when I was in high school because they’re very big in the region and then Zeta Phi Beta I want to say it’s big up north as well you guys correct me they
Tusker echt me if I’m incorrect but I’m pretty sure you guys are big in the Northeast just like we are but it’s a misconception and I think that it’s something that needs to be corrected because it’s not entirely true another I want to say top misconception that people have about sororities is that
They don’t think that an individual is somebody until they become a member of a sorority or a fraternity or I would say a sorority cuz we’re talking about sororities but it works for fraternities too so yeah when you’re typically a quiet person or a shy person and you
Come out into an organization and people don’t typically know who you are you’re gonna end up being well-known at the end of the day however that’s not the case for everybody not everybody joins a sorority just to be known for being in a sorority if I want to join Sigma Gamma
Rho just so that people would know that I missed it again that’s exhausting I don’t think that it’s entirely the case for people people join our organizations because they see something in them that they see something in the sorority’s that they feel like will help them to better themselves and by bettering themselves
I mean bettering their internal selves they want to be better people because at the end of the day like I’ve always said we are an elite society we are very picky about the people that would choose to join our organizations so if we see something in you then that means that we
Think that you’re worthy another thing that gets me about misconceptions in Greek life is that people think that when you join a sorority it means that you’re going to party all the time I don’t know about you but when I joined us already partying with not the number one thing
On my list yes we are a social organization and being social includes going to parties mixers and other Greek events however it is not the foundation of the organization we are here for community service we’re here for networking we’re here to make a contribution to the world so that should
Be your primary focus and then you think that that’s what we’re all about you are so wrong you can’t be more wrong in your entire life there are so many sororities that have strong roots to lupus foundations to teaching people how to swim to HIV and AIDS awareness we are
More than just parties and bar hopping and all that other stuff lastly I think that when people think of black sororities they think that we’re just playing into the stereotype I mentioned it in the beginning a little bit but I don’t agree with that idea of black
Sororities we are here to make an impact and that’s what majority of us if not all of us are doing now you do have some those people that just are a little little wayward they’re wayward Souls however majority of the time we’re trying to make a name for ourselves
We’re trying to make a name for our chapter we’re trying to bear the community and let the world know that our sorority contributed to that case in point with my sorority we have swim 19-22 that includes people of ethnic backgrounds and teaching them how to swim anything can be said for Girl Scouts
Cinema camera rules the one the first to come up with an initiative of Girl Scouts we’re very into building the community and making an impact within the society we all have our things that we’re interested in that make us proud to be in the organization also help us
To build a legacy and those legacies are continued through new members and through new chapters but I’m done I’m done with much feel I’m going to leave it alone I just want to put that out there it’s not a rant but I just wanted to put it
Out there that there are a lot of misconceptions about Greek life and there are a lot of misconceptions about black Greek life and more specifically I think there are misconceptions about women in Greek life and I just want to put that out there so when x-men do the
Video so I’m just feeling people’s request if you have any comments please feel free to put them down below if you guys like this video give me a thumbs up and feel free to put your comments down there your perspectives anything you might want to add I hope you guys
