Hey guys shelby steiner here um i’ve tried to make this video so many times but i’m never happy with it so i keep making it but uh it’s like 3am here on the west coast and i totally should be in bed but i can’t sleep uh because of all this
Craziness that has been happening at my alma mater the university of oklahoma so if you don’t know a fraternity on ou’s campus was kicked off of campus after a video leaked on the internet of a racist chant that some of their members were chanting on a date party bus um the chant
Had several uses of the n-word and made references to lynching people of color and if you don’t know what lynching is it is hanging by the neck until dead and it’s disgusting it was a very disappointing video to come out from the greek system at ou excuse me from this fraternity at ou
Um but i’m very happy that the university dealt with it very swiftly as well as that fraternities nationals as well as the greek system as a whole um i’m extremely proud of the members the fraternity members and sorority members that were all over social media saying how disgusted they were that this fraternity
Would actually be okay with chanting these words and be actually proud of this chant um and it just made me very happy that they would all these students would just stand up and actually be very vocal against so i just wanted to make a video because um i am a
Former ou i can’t it’s not former ou alum but i am an ou alum and i’m also an alum of the greek system i was part of a sorority in panhellenic and i absolutely love my sorority and i love my sorority sisters and i always felt welcome there i never felt like
I was any different from any of them and i guess that’s why i chose them and i guess that’s why they’ll be my sisters forever this video is not indicative of the feelings of the members of ifc or panhellenic at least none of the people that i know
And i don’t want it to reflect in that manner as though this is just how the greek system is because that’s just not that was never my experience and i was part of it for four years and i was very happy to be part of it people would say stupid stuff
Don’t get me wrong but people that weren’t in greek would say stupid stuff to me i mean i cannot tell you how many times i was asked if i knew how to dougie or if i knew how to twerk uh do i look like miley cyrus i don’t know how to work okay
And i remember i actually looked up how to dougie because i felt insecure in my blackness because i didn’t know how and i knew that the next time that somebody asked me to dougie i wanted to know that way they didn’t look at me as being less black in some way
Which is crazy because hi it’s it’s how more black can you can you get like black it’s all over me it shouldn’t i shouldn’t have to prove it by dancing for you anyways i love the fact that this group unheard is becoming so big on campus and
They are doing so many forums and talks and protests and writing letters and actually having the leaders of the school listen to them and in their issues their their grievances that they have with the university and i think it’s amazing that the university is also taking these grievances and trying to fix them
And here’s i i think i have an idea of how we can help even further to further our school with regards to race um and that is actually working mainly with a lot of the greek systems i think if we do a mandated form just like how the sexual assaults
Sexual assault seminars and forms are mandated for all students to take before they can even enroll in classes i think if we have a mandated event form what have you like that with the divine nine the multicultural fraternities and sororities um panel linux and ifc fraternities and sororities as well as um
Racial leaders at the university such as dr henderson and dampus and other leaders such as that on campus obviously president boren and we have a public forum where we actually discuss racial issues on campus where students can feel comfortable airing their grievances to other students things like um
Like the divine nine can actually discuss how they feel as though they’re being shut out of even such as homecoming or using and how i’ve seen panhellenic maybe members of those uh organizations can actually feel safe asking questions um in regards to race rather than you know just coming up to one person
I was always that person coming up to one person and asking questions that may make that person of color and those chapters feel awkward or um excluded in in just the way that they’re being singled out in their chapter so this is a way that actually
We can make the people of color that are part of the i’ve seen in panelinic systems feel safe by giving their chapters actual knowledge into um what it is like for a person of color to be around people that are primarily not of the same race
And also giving people that are not of color a chance to ask whatever non-pc questions they want to and actually get answers to them instead of feeling like you know maybe they’re going to be judged for asking these types of questions so i think that if there is actually a mandated form for
All chapters and all of their members to have to go to um where they can actually discuss these issues that could be a beautiful and amazing thing because to fix a lot of the racial issues that there are on campus you actually do have to go to the people that are leading campus
The student leaders of campus which in that case would be the students that are part of greek systems on campus now the greek system may only be 25 of the student body but let’s be real they run almost every organization on campus homecoming is run by people in greek
Using is run by people in greek scandals is run by people in greek if you want to have voices being heard in different organizations and different events you have to go to the greek system so i think that would be the best way just get everybody together to discuss
Issues in a safe and regulated manner and maybe that way we’ll actually be able to see that we’re all people who have the exact same worries and problems and happinesses and sadnesses and angers and everything else that we’re all just the same in some way even though we are different in another way
So those are just my ideas just one single person um i should probably get some sleep since like 4 a.m but i just wanted to say that i love my university i will always love my university i love my sorority and god bless the university of oklahoma good night and boomer sooner
