“The Blessing of Living Like a Child” – Matthew 18:1-6

Little late but I was amazed to see all the cars in the parking lot at 9:00 [Applause] so and uh it was encouraging because it tells me what I I always believe is true when people want to do something they figure out a way to do it so since your

Kids were necessary to be here you got here cuz they couldn’t get here by themselves and we are really thankful that you making that sacrifice but it just goes to show us that there are things that we can do that sometimes we put off uh and they are important my

Name is Willie Davis I’m one of the elders here at the Southside Church of Christ along with brother Victor CR it’s our pleasure to serve you uh we welcome you here to worship with us today this is our fall festival weekend it kicked off yesterday with a a bunch of events

On the grounds and uh playhouses and food wings and stuff all kinds of goodies and uh I think everybody had a good time and it started again this morning at 9:00 where our children for the various classes did various presentations and for the last last 35 minutes we just

Been having a song fest so it’s been been wonderful so I just enjoy that in my early days in introduction to the Church of Christ those were some of the events I look most forward to to go to the different song fests around central Florida and throughout Florida uh just

For the singing it was so encouraging uh you know we used to pack up and go from place to place uh brother and sister Adams and the rest of us would just kind of follow around and go do things you know brother Willie’s over here he’s a singer but he don’t want to

Sing right now but uh he’s one of the old guard that really just just get together with all the groups and and just sing you know we as a people singing and music is very important especially when we’re singing and praising God uh in the early days

That’s about all we could do because of restraints and restrictions but we could always say hallelujah amen we can always say praise the Lord uh you know so I’m just thankful for our history I’m thankful that we’re still here to give praise and honor to God and I’m just trying to spend a

Little time to calm us down okay uh but hopefully you’ve uh picked up a communion cup on the way in disposable if not raise your hand and somebody will give it to you we’re still using a somewhat streamlined Services Co is still active and real so we try to

Protect everybody as best we can that’s one of those areas at the appropriate time please if you have a prayer request or some sort of response please write it on one of these cards or one of our attendants we’ll pick it up at the appropriate time during collection the time of contribution

Toward the end of our service the various means for online contributing will be placed on the screen and you can see those if you’re out of town uh please note that uh to our online audience we call our affectionately called brother lonard calls them our pajama Church welcome to you also we’re

Live streaming on YouTube and Facebook that’s why it’s important that we start at 11 o’clock because YouTube TV and all that stuff we do need to be timely as we begin the services there okay so that’s one of the reasons we just try to get you up and get you going at those

Appropriate times but also if you’re here in the order to you like to give please uh put your your funds in one of these white envelopes and put your name and the amount on front so that we can track it if you want a giving statement

Okay which we would do at the end of each year again it’s been a great weekend I’m so proud of our our students uh all of you active and you seem to be having fun which is important I know as a kid uh even though I was not in the Church of

Christ uh being active in events was very important a lot of my speaking ability came because I was forced to be on programs didn’t but it got me up in front of people and that’s what we need to do for our children sometimes we wonder why they aren’t able to do things

That we think they should be because they just don’t have the training and uh we give in too much to kids saying I don’t want to you are the parents you are the parents you love them you want what’s best for them and we all need a little push a little push

To get past those fears and that’s what Satan uses the most he gets us fearful but God says trust him and faith mean I’m going to step out I’m going to do some things that are maybe not so comfortable but because of the reason I want to please him I want to be

My best I’m going to give it my best and that that’s all God wants from us he’ll take care of all the heavy stuff really he will so without further Ado let us uh stand in our openness in prayer and then uh praise team Our Song leaders will

Come before us and and direct us in some continuation of songs we have a special guest today brother Andrew braxter is going to be leading us in our singing I’m not singing our he sings but he’s our guest Minister he’s a young man and he’s uh very talented so

We want to encourage him when he comes up and uh there are several other things going to happen during the service so we ask you to be patient uh as we go forward let’s pray together gracious God and Father first of all we say thank you

Thank you for loving us enough that you gave us your best because of what you have done we can be in a relationship with you we can have the privilege of calling you our father and because of that we are your children and we know that you take care of your

Children father we know that we sin we fall short we transgress we do those things that are not pleasing to you you hopefully and prayerfully that as we grow we will change and it’ll be less and less of that as we mature but we ask for your continued

Forgiveness but you knew who we were that’s why your son came that’s why the blood was shed you tell us in your word that the tremendous power of that blood is so difficult for us to comprehend but you tell us if we confess our sins you are faithful

You will forgive us because you are faithful we fall short but you’re still faithful God because you’re love us and father help us to be more patient with each other because just as you show grace and mercy to us help us to be of that mindset in dealing with each other and

Those that are around us so often we forget from once we come yet each and every day we really do things that against against your will and father help us to be patient just log in our own eyes we don’t see but we need to God as we to progress

And to be your people to draw people unto you and help us to look to you father we need to be more active in sharing your word we need to be more cognizant of the condition of this world we see the the challenges there but there is only one solution and you are

The solution let us not forget that it’s not weapons it’s it’s not all these other things that are going on it’s you we have the greatest weapon there is and that’s you god father we ask for your blessings upon this congregation we thank you that

We can rejoice in all that’s going on uh the many things that you are doing and we say thank you for that we give you the highest praise let us all say hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah thank you Father we ask now that you bless the

Rest of this service pray that all would go well those that may not be feeling well God that you would strengthen them up and Shore them up on on every side those that are word about other things God help them to realize that there’s nothing too hard for you father we love

All love sister ly Adams amen right but she’s after many years almost 10 years of being a widow um she is be getting married in December and I ain’t had no problem with that but the moving part I had a problem with yeah uh she moved into Atlanta

Georgia area now the good news is is the gentleman she’s married I have known him years he’s a real fine man Christian member of the body of Christ and uh so I feel I feel good about that but we wanted to let you I know some of you

Done got the Rumblings you know some of y’all on the street committee so I already know you know you know the street committee see the street committee know stuff and they spread it you know but I wanted to formally let those who didn’t know Linda is leaving

Us in December but her mark is set here and we are extremely happy glad for her we’re praying for you and Southside is always your home and uh I I’ll tell uh Theo like I told my daughter’s husband uh when my daughter got ready to get married I said uh young

Man uh my daughter grew up in a Christian home young man I whooped him but you can’t and uh y y’all follow what I’m I said I I got that donkey yeah but you you can’t get it I said the cake is baked I said n he’s a fine young man we

We thankful I just said to him if it don’t work out send a home y’all understand what I’m saying yeah unharmed yeah send her home so I’m going to tell my good friend my brother if it don’t work out just send her home because she’s always got a place at

Southside but uh I want you to know that uh I feel good she’s in good hands brother Butler is Fin and gentleman as I’ve met and I’m thankful for him and pray for her now also yam’s Ministry listen uh uh stand up Jared and NAA this

Young man is the head of our young adults Ministry and service and we’re looking he wants you to know anybody interested in Young Adult Ministry and service young adult this is not geriatric okay and this is not children this is the bridge Ministry between children and our seniors he’s in he and

His wife are in charge of it he wants you to reach out to him they put it on the first major event next month the Thanksgiving basket giveaways uh really proud of Jared keep up the great work reach out to Jared and NAA and

Applaud we do again all those who’ve been responsible for the growth and development of our young people here uh in Li of that uh we have several guests here uh either see their grand children or neighbors or friends we’re so glad to have you I have a special honored guest

In the Audi today homeboy from Tallahassee Florida we grew up in the baros and ghettos of Tallahassee but God don’t judge you about where you’re from he deals with you about where you are I’m I’m I’m from Barn Florida and he’s from Parts Unknown and uh we’re just glad to have

My dear friend he’s running for property of prais and Leon County in Tallahassee we’ve been knowing each other 50 years or more uh friends and we were friends before the Lord got a hold to both of us and uh but the Lord did get a hold to us

And we ain’t all we should be we sure ain’t what we used to be and for those you at this church who want to know you’re always asking me what this AD stand for I was given the name ad by this gentleman he’s not going to tell you

Either yeah we we we ride or die this is this is Mafia stuff the only way out it’s to the graveyard that that’s only way out he he ain’t talking you might well not ask him what AD mean cuz if he tell you that he know I know where

Was a student at Southwestern Christian College uh our College Church of Christ college and and when I would preach there these young preaching apprentices would all sit on the front row and I a have no better sense uh 20 years ago or more they they on there and they got

Their phones out and I said turn to so and so and they pull it phones I didn’t know that the Bible was on telephones so when these eight young men sit on the front row pull their phones out and I got to my sermon I said man y’all so

Disrespectful you know I say y’all on your phone I’m trying to preach and he’s the only one had the chitlings in the G to say to me pops it’s it’s the Bible I said somebody better tell me something I better and then I did I really didn’t know that

This years ago and that’s I had a little flip phone then and uh but he he and from that day forward he got my phone number and I got his and he started calling me pops and Pam mother and and we adopted him and he’s got other people

Like sister Linda here that he’s grown near and dear to I was going to install him at his appreciation uh uh uh uh at his church but Co got us he’s been in Little Rock Arkansas the rad City Community Church of Christ for four years now anointed gifted blessed by God

He’s one of my sons in the gospel I’m glad to have him back on this celebrated youth weekend ladies he’s in his mid-30s single and available now watching how they start coming closer now say they see that R right there is for long be something ain’t right with

My mic today I don’t know what it is but uh uh yeah he he’s young single and available and he’s a Godly young man so proud of him and may God bless you son you know we love you with the love of the Lord uh I’m going to have Jordan

Jordan you going to bring him up ain’t Jordan doing a phenomenal job here now Jordan you know you’ve been here here your mama was here before you was born so you already know I’m only preacher hat Jordan you don’t put a man in the Deep Freeze and ask him to sweat

Serve Angels bow before him Heaven and Earth adore him what a mighty mighty mighty mighty mighty mighty mighty mighty God we serve I don’t know about you I’m just I’ve lived long enough now that any day above ground is a good day uh I’m not that old uh but I ain’t going

To wait till I’m 70 to say what I want because I might not see it so let me go ahead and say it now while I got the mic but I’m just glad to be alive I’ve uh a couple of years ago I was leaving the

Church and um headed to the house we had just finished declaring what type of year we were going to have and I believe we made the devil mad that that night and as I left the church and was uh headed toward the highway uh there was I

Just come through Cory a Redlight and I was driving slow anybody that really knows me knows I don’t drive too fast I’m a cruiser I get there whenever I get there um but I was coming through the red light and the car veered lanes and I

Couldn’t do nothing but take the hit uh every now and then in life there’s nothing you can do to avoid it you just you just got to take it uh you just take it however it happens it happens I start praying Lord forgive me for all of my

Sins When You See It Coming your prayers change I just finished fushing at one of my deacons and so I told the I told the Lord forgive me for what I said to him it wasn’t it wasn’t Godly um but I I saw this car coming and it hit me head on uh

And uh I didn’t see the one that that hit me from behind uh and so there I was sandwiched in the middle and I was on the phone with one of what y’all doing uh I was I was on the phone with one of my deacons and it was playing

Through the car cuz I believe in driving handsfree and uh the car cut my phone off and Di 911 but God when they when the police got there when the police got there I heard one of the officers say somebody check his legs because he ain’t going to be able to

Drive this home tonight and when they got to me and opened the door I said officer is it that bad and he said bro you ain’t got no front in and so when I got out and I took pictures of the accident uh y’all missed your chance to

Shout when I got out and took pictures of the accident when I got out out took pictures of the accident and saw just how bad it was I said Thank you Lord for sparing my life because this thing could have ended another way as a matter of fact I didn’t

Know how bad it was until I got out of it and I wonder is there anybody listening to me that you’ve looked back over some things in your life you didn’t know just how bad it was till to you got out of it oh but you’re here by the

Grace of God can we just thank God one more time for keeping us hallelujah oh to be kept by God hallelujah hallelujah I want to begin by expressing my appreciation to the angel of this house your iminent pastor can you just thank God for the set man of this place

The one and the only Pastor Wesley T Leonard he is a gift to the body of Christ he is a gift to our Brotherhood he is a gift to this church and we praise and we thank God for him amen amen for almost 25 years he has labored

At this place and has built it into a model church that people around the country look to uh for guidance that look to as an example of what they ought to be doing and we praise and thank God for him and then to the Sweet fragrance

Of this house lady Pam can we celebrate Her as P would say his Newan Queen uh we praise and we thank God for her standing by his side holding his arms up it was years ago I was dating uh someone and I brought her to meet Mama Pam and uh Mama Pam told her baby if you

Want to stay around you got to do for him what I do for my husband and that’s let him be him well she ain’t here no more but [Applause] anyway she ain’t listen to the advice it’ be all right but I appre appreciate you appreciate you letting him be him

And for you doing you you you set your own standard uh you do what you want to do and so many times when you have first ladies they think they have to fit into some type of mode I done had a whole bunch of people tell me I don’t want to

Funeral home and uh the staff that we have it’s a it’s a good staff but sometime folk got things to do and because of the magnitude of the service we needed all hands on deck and because I tried my best to be a responsible adult I tried to y’all pray for me I’m

Still working on it uh I tried my best to be a responsible adult because I wanted to make sure the business was taken care of I almost changed my flight just so that I can make sure that things were taken care of because as you get older your responsibilities

Change what’s important to you changes um your mindset changes um your your prayers change what you enjoy changes used to be a time I like to go go go all the time now if you don’t catch me before I get to the boulevard don’t let me have hit 43 and

I’m backing into the garage I enjoy just being home now yeah when I get a chance I enjoy sleeping when I y’all going to help me today I’m going be there in just a minute because as you get older life becomes so much more complicated we have so much more at our

Disposal we have so much more uh that we’re able to do I mean look at technology today there used to be a time when you had flip phones I know a preacher in L Rock he still got a flip phone I went to the office one day we getting

Ready to go to lunch he said Brax hold on one minute before we leave I need to put flip on the charger I said you need to do what I said doc you can’t do nothing but call on that thing our world is constantly changing there’s anything that I can say

To us today as we are seeking to be the people of God being better for the mission of our Messiah I believe that the thing that I would want to tell us today this Fall Fest weekend as we have seen our young people do absolutely wonderful today young people did a wonderful job

Uh from leading Us in worship today to the presentations that we saw I would tell us don’t forget a but don’t lose that childlike Factor sometimes as we get older because we have dealt with life so much I I I’ve noticed it in pictures our eyes

Change that hope that we once had is no longer there those those dreams that we once had have now turned into nightmares oh feelings that we once had that brought us joy and happiness now do nothing but bring us pain but if I can tell us anything today there’s a

Blessing in learning to live like a child these children are beautiful I I I heard what pop said about the crying and all of that stuff make sure you passy the baby you don’t want the baby to be holling and all that stuff but it’s a

Good thing when you got babies in church amen right y’all ain’t going to help me it’s a good thing when you have babies in church it’s a good thing when you have young people in church because that means that there’s still life and is’t it good to that God will

Allow you to see who’s going to take your place who’s going to be handling things and one of the things I’m thankful for I don’t believe that young people are the Church of tomorrow I believe that they are the Church of today and uh I’m I’m thankful for the

People that invested in me me over 25 years ago that gave me a chance allowed me uh to to preach allowed me to travel I started preaching at 8 years old I started traveling at 12 I started running Revival at 16 I was preaching in

The National at 21 as a matter of fact he and I preached together one year a at National in Louisville Kentucky and and then I’ve been able to travel all around this country simply because somebody believed in me because somebody took the time to p pour into me and so from the

Beginning of this little message today I just want to tell you keep on pouring into the Next Generation cuz watch this the more you pour into them the more they’re going to pour back into you part of the reason why this church is so young some of

Y’all 70 80 years old and still moving around here I saw y’all yesterday I saw y’all cha chying and wobbling and all of that stuff the reason why you can still do it is because there’s life in here amen yes sir so let me just tell my young folk man I

Too impressed with things that are temporal things that can be replaced but our focus should be on things that are Eternal amen things that are going to last I’ve been buying my own clothes since I was about 10 12 years old daddy would take me to the souit store and uh

When we would go to the suit store he would show me how to look at suits um and uh we would go and I would want something I would want something that was real flashy uh you know no no no no no no no

No not not themm colors no not uh but I I I wanted something at that time that was real flashy that was going to stand out you know some of that you know them sisters amen and what Daddy would show me was something that didn’t look as

Flashy as what I wanted and what he would do he he would not only uh tell me that not what you want but he would show me what I needed to look for in the fabric uh to the point now when I meet with with my Taylor there are certain

Things that I do to the fabric before I say hey give me this one and so he would say what you want to do is take your fabric take your Fabric and ball it up and then let it go and see how fast them wrinkles fall

Out of it because that’ll tell you if it’s going to be a good suit or not he taught me me how to be a man of quality and may I encourage somebody today that as you move throughout this life and as you instill in the Next Generation make sure above anything that

You teach them to be people children of quality amen give them something that when when when people look at them they can tell the type of stock that they come from before you started your presentation you ask the boy to stand up yeah there he is he peeking yeah I see

Master remember we’re the ones that you picked to walk with you to talk with you to be your disciples so won’t you do us a favor we just finished this battle with them won’t you tell us who your favorite in the kingdom is tell us who the greatest in the

Kingdom will be and he says you want to see who the greatest in the kingdom is come here son come here what’s your name Jonathan come here come here I ain’t goingon to bite you I promise you all right yeah as he’s looking at the people and trying to answer their

Naked and why did you go and hide why why were you ashamed of how I created you to be because the lens that I now look through is not of Innocence anymore you take a child right now they take their pimp off they’ll run all through this church and won’t think anything about

Experience just because it’s not your experience and you can’t teach it to them does not mean that they shouldn’t learn it you need Bible for it 1 Samuel chapter 1 and two hand a praise for a child that she cannot handle she prays for a child who is better than she is

That is going to go on and do great things and when God answers her prayer she keeps her end of the bargain and takes him back to the place where he can be prepared to do great things stop talking about who you don’t need and what you don’t
