Okay there’s going to be folks coming in as I’m speaking so I will put some of this information into the chat uh welcome to the MTC virtual college fair we are so excited to have you a few things that are really important if you’re watching this live and of course
If you’re watching this recording if you’re watching live important to note that your camera and microphone are off off so if you would like to ask a question during this 45 minute session please use the Q&A button at the top or bottom the only way to ask a question
During this 45 minute session is by using that Q&A button at the top or bottom if you want to contact any of these Representatives uh outside of this session pay attention to the presentations and also pay attention to the chat where a lot of these folks will be putting this information there is
Another session after this one so check out the website definitely sign up for more and a recording of this and all of the other sessions happening will be available at strives scan.com Mastery with that said first up is St anel College thank you so much uh let me just share my screen really
Quickly awesome uh so uh let me introduce myself really quickly um my name is Rich FZ um I am the senior assistant director of admission at St A’s um we’re located in Manchester New Hampshire I just want to thank everyone for joining the session today uh just
Speaking a little bit more about you know kind of who we are what we are um so we’re originally founded in 1889 uh we’re the oldest Benedict and institution in New England uh so something we are very proud of um as and as a Benedict and we do have uh 10
Hallmarks as part of our education uh some things you’ll see uh when you’re walking around you know the hilltop our nickname uh you know things that we try to live by uh one of the things one of the biggest things that I think you’ll see while you’re walking around campus
Is this idea of hospitality um you know we tra take really good care of our community and who we are as an institution uh Our Food Services is absolutely legit uh something again we take very seriously um and then the other thing which is actually built into our curriculum is this idea of
Conversio it’s one of our stable Hallmarks of era education um it’s a two semester class uh students essentially uh learn what it means to have the good life um again two semester class what’s really unique about that class is um there are students from across all different
Majors and you learn what’s important to you know different students um again really you know in powerful class uh so talking a little bit more about who we are as a as a institution uh so like I said before uh we’re located in Manchester New Hampshire um in the
Largest city in all of New Hampshire um we’re 57 miles from Boston um you know so our students can access you know a big city uh you know by a short hour car ride we are a smaller institution about 2,000 undergraduate students and again I think that’s something we really proud
Ourselves on uh average class size is about 18 students but our student faculty ratio is about 11 to1 uh so our students will never be a number get to know our faculty by name and vice versa uh lastly we do have over a 100 different academic programs um I won’t
Spend a ton of time talking about these different programs because we’d be here forever uh but what I always do like to say is being a liberal arts institution uh we have a wide variety of different things for our students to study uh some of our more popular programs range
Anywhere from uh nursing health science uh politics is huge on our campus we actually have the New Hampshire Institute a politics where we’ve had every single presidential candidate on campus since JFK um you know and then computer science education those are really our five more popular programs um we also do
Have all the pre-professional programs so if you’re thinking about uh you know becoming a dentist or going into law school we have all the advisors to help you get to essentially where you ever want to be uh and then we do have two masters programs both are which are
Structured as a four plus one option so uh talking a little bit more about the application process and what we essentially look for in our students uh so to get started uh you would apply with either the common application or the St anam’s application uh we do have
A $50 application fee um but attending this session today you should receive a fee waiver code from us uh within the next uh you know 24 48 Hours uh we do require all official transcripts a secondary school report uh and one letter of recommendation uh we are a
Test optional School uh so students are never forced or required to submit their test scores for us for the application process uh even for nursing uh like I said we are test optional uh and then the last thing I always like to end up
On uh before I turn it back over to a facilitator uh three different options when it comes to applying um early decision we only want students to apply if they 100% know St a is the place they want to be it is a binding uh agreement uh early action uh deadline for that
November 15 typically students will get a decision within a month um and then uh for students that do miss the early action deadline our regular decision deadline is February 1st uh last say to let us know if you are coming or not is May
1st uh uh oh sorry excuse me um and then the I guess last thing I forgot to talk about you know kind of threeyear averages um average GPA for a student coming to SC is about a 3.3 solid B plus average student um if you are interested
In submitting your test scores uh you could see what the averages are listed right there um but like I said we are a test optional school so students are never forc or required to submit their test scores uh just talking a little bit more about the Bubbles um so the top left bubble
Uh every single semester we have a club and activity Fair we have about 60 different clubs and organizations uh ranging from the EMT Club to uh you know the newspaper Society um so really kind of a whole bunch of different things um that our students are interested and passionate
About uh we are a division 2 institution we do have 22 Division 2 sports teams uh we do have a division one women’s ice hockey program uh being a Benedict and institution community service is a big part of who we are as well as so you’ll see the
Bottom left as well as the bottom right picture uh students participating in some sort of service either on campus or in the city of Manchester uh and then like I said um before the bubble right in the middle uh that is a picture of our students in the
New Hampshire Institute of politics so if you are interested in politics um you you know like I said s should definitely be a place that you should put on your radar um like I said before we’ve had every single presidential candidate on campus since JFK um so I’m really going to end at
That I’ll put all my contact information in the um in the chat um if anyone does have any questions feel free to reach out to me I’m here to help um in any way I can and I will turn it back over thank you thank you so much next up we have Prescott
College great thank you share the screen here okay well welcome everyone um happy Thursday my name is Carissa Butler I’m the director of undergraduate admissions at Prescot we’ll just Breeze through a little bit of information about presc college located in Arizona so we’ll start with our degree programs um
Prescot’s a small liberal art School in northern Arizona we only have a handful of degrees so separate from um St a a little bit we only have a handful of degree titles because you’re really going to have the chance to design that program um based on what you’re
Interested in so this is going to be really specific to you and your interest every degree is designed by the student we kind of give you some rough guidelines and then from there you’re really driving the boat um you’re telling us what you’re interested in what kind of issues do you care about
What do you want to be learning and then we help drive it from there ccet is a small school it’s experiential and field-based so we actually have more Vans than classrooms we don’t want you spending a ton of time sitting in big stuffy lecture Halls um
We don’t want you kind of reading about what you want to be doing we want you to really get the chance to be doing what you want to be doing um and so in that case you’re really spending a lot of time out in the field working with your instructors working with professional
Right from the very beginning of your program it’s not one of those where like once you get to Upper division then you get to do more of that field work we want you doing it right right from the very beginning of your program um and that’s true across all of our degrees so
You saw on the last side we had programs at education psychology Environmental Studies obviously if you’re doing adventure education you’re rock climbing your whitewater rafting you’ve got to be on the Rock you’ve got to be on the water but if you’re doing psychology if you’re doing education we want you to
Have that experience really early on to really be getting a feel for if this is the stuff that really gets you fired up and excited like I said individualized degree plans every person is different so every degree is different you tell us what you’re feeling super stoked about
And we’ll kind of really take it from there really small class sizes to get you out on the field we consider campus kind of base camp so you kind of spend some time on campus getting oriented but then a lot of the time you’re you’re out
In the field even early on part of the thing that helps us with that field-based work is our block session schedule so we operate on a block block session which means four weeks in a block where you’re only taking one class in those four weeks then another block
For four weeks and then typically an eight-week session at the second half of the semester where you’re taking two courses um on campus town home style residence hall so not long um drawn out hallways of single or double rooms the town homes are really built to be
Community oriented it’s a chance for you to spend time with each other the main floor is all full Living Kitchen dining space um and then each town home sleeps about 8 to 10 students accelerated Masters options are available for all of our students most of our students are going to take a
Similar approach to a four plus one type of option and transition right into their master’s degree as part of their undergraduate program and really the key values that PRC it what drives us and all of our students in our programs are it’s just this orientation towards Justice the environment and really creative problem
Solving all of our students in the oncampus program are going to take orientation it’s the first class class for all of our students whether they’re a first-time or a transfer student and they typically have two options the first option is werness based it’s at its heart a three-week backpacking trip
You’re really orienting yourself to the types of field-based skills that you’ll be using throughout the rest of your program um and you’re joining with like really working on your communication skills your presentation skills and your group work um throughout that uh orientation the other option is community based where you’re working
With a local nonprofit kind of a Hands-On project typically oriented on a justice issue of some sort in our community all of them are designed to be beginner friendly so if the idea of doing the backpacking trip sounds amazing but you’re feeling a little bit intimidated by it we get it um we’re
Going to design it to be really accessible to you we have two preset College owned Field Station so again our campus is small our community is small we don’t want you to consider that the only place where you can be doing your studies though so you’ve got two presc College
Study uh field stations to go to one is in Kino Bay Mexico um we do a lot of work on marine biology um Island biogeography biological field methods and then we have some Arts and Humanities and Spanish electives that happen there um it’s about 10 hours of
Drive time to get to that station and then the deploy Center in Kenya um we do a lot of behavior and conservation globalization Humanities work um and it’s right on the edge of the Masai Mara Wildland Refugee um Refuge so a lot of opportunities to be doing kind of big um
Game uh behavior and conservation work we have two exchange options also so we partner with a variety of other schools where our students can take a full semester or year at any of the partner institutions here um the partner ship are Eco leak or CL um and so again
It’s just kind of a chance for students to get a chance to work with other schools and see other environments maybe work in different ecosystems while they do their studies and they pay the home tuition rate at presc college so financial aid pieces all of
Our students in the 23 24 year receive a scholarship of some sort if they’re applying to the on campus program right now this is what our methodology looks like we’re reviewing it for 2425 it’s going to be really common for a lot of the schools that you’re applying to
Right out of the gate for our students that complete their application and are accepted firsttime students are going to receive $117,000 renewable every year towards their tuition and transfer students are going to receive 15,000 every year then on top of that we stack need-based Bridge grants for those
Really highfit students that write us a really strong essay or really demonstrate an alignment to our Mission Vision Values they have the option of being added an additional $2,000 per year this is on top of any Aid you’re getting by um doing the FAFSA or working on um other private scholarships that
You might be bringing into your a package here so when considering the application um it’s a free application it’s been a free application for years um it’s a short form at presc it.edu apply we just need unofficial transcripts from your high school if you have fewer than 60 college credits
Unofficial transcripts from any colleges attended if you have more than 60 college credits we only need the college transcripts we won’t need those high school transcripts and then a two to two to four page double spaced essay which I’ll talk about in just a second the contact information for a single
Reference and you can apply through our website or the Common App so you have two options there we don’t need act or scores we’ve been test optional for more than a decade um and we don’t need full letters of recommendation we’ll follow up with your references if we need to as
A result of following up on your application so talking about the essay what are we really looking for here right like What attracted you to presc College’s model what about our field-based work getting to be out in the environment working towards social justice really attracts
You um how do you see yourself as a change maker now or in the future and why do you think that presc college is the right place to help you get there one of the things I really want to tell students in their engagement with us is
We want you to be yourself right from the beginning right part of college is finding this environment where you can really be comfortable um as yourself um and be authentically you and explore your interest that’s true from the very beginning right day one you’re working on your application let your authentic
Voice shine through that’s really important to us um and I say this I couldn’t say it enough but please proof read um proof read proof read right I don’t want it to look like you send it as a text message to me I I want to make
Sure that you really like took some time to look through it um that you were really thoughtful with your application and better yet have someone else take a look at it for you to make sure that things look good so um that’s all I have for you we have got some questions later
In the presentation all right thank you yes we have the Q&A button um it’s either at the bottom or top of the screen anyone here can definitely click on that or make sure you contact the folks that uh are giving you their information in their presentation or the chat next up
We have midbury College you’re on mute yeah you’re muted so sorry thank you um hi everyone thank you all for being here and welcome to um a short virtual introduction to Middlebury College my name is Kate Wallace um and I’m a Middlebury admissions counselor as well as a recent
Middlebury student uh I was a member of the graduating class of 2023 at Middlebury I was an English major and an art history minor and tonight I’m excited to share why middleburry was such a great fit for me and why it might also be a great fit for you
Um for those of you who are not super familiar with Vermont we’ll zoom out for a moment and talk about where Middlebury is located we are in Central Vermont an hour away from Burlington which is Vermont’s largest city only two hours from Montreal um and we recently got an
Amtrak station right in the town of midbury so students can walk five minutes from campus and take a train to New York City um or anywhere else that the Amtrak lines connect to uh the really nice thing about coming to Middlebury and being a student here is that you’re not just joining our
Student body Community but you’re also joining The Wider Middlebury and Vermont Community this is our beautiful campus which has plenty of the natural space and beauty that Vermont has to offer um and we definitely experience four vibrant Seasons here at Middlebury we really celebrate the natural beauty that
Surrounds us um and we often stay grounded during periods of stress or academic challenge by going outside um or taking a walk around campus speaking of the classroom the academics at Middlebury um have lots of room for exploration where a small liberal arts college um which means that you’re not
Applying into a certain major um and in fact you’re not allowed to declare a major until the end of your second semester um that’s because Middlebury really wants you to explore the breadth of our curriculum um and to take advantage of the different courses that we have to offer and the different
Departments that we have um there are eight distribution requirements of which you must fulfill seven before you graduate but these really are just in place to help make sure students are stepping outside of their academic Comfort zones if you’ve ever thought that you might want to graduate college with fluency in
A new language or even to then Middlebury is definitely a safe investment um during the normal Academic Year we offer 10 modern languages plus the classics and while middleb students are welcome to take a placement test and continue studying a language that they’re already familiar with uh many
Will also start from scratch so if you show up to an introductory language class at Middlebury you’ll never speak a word of English inside that classroom even on the first day and that can be a daunting Prospect at first but our immersive approach really means that you
Are catching on very fast and there are also many different ways for you to immerse yourself um in language learning outside the classroom so this might look like eating lunch at one of our language tables uh in one of our dining Halls where you’re seated with a bunch of
Other students who are also learning that language at Middlebury and a professor um and you’re making conversation and ordering your food in that language or it might look like applying to live in one of our language houses where um you sign a pledge that says you’re only going to speak that
Language in the house um and it makes for a really cool immersive residential experience right here in Middlebury Vermont but even if you don’t choose to spend a semester in one of the language houses um all Middlebury language students will be prepared to study abroad by their junior year the green
Flags on this map show the places where Middlebury has our own schools abroad these are really easy to attend because your financial aid will transfer seamlessly with you abroad and your credits um come easily back home with you um if you’d like to study somewhere
Where you don’t see a flag on this map that’s entirely possible too and our study abroad Office Works to send students all over the world every year um if you’re maybe interested in studying abroad in an English speaking program that’s possible too as a student at Middlebury I studied abroad um at
Midbury school at Oxford University and that was a great chance for me to experience life abroad but also um to take courses for my English major but for now I’ll transport you back to our campus in Middlebury Vermont to show you what a view out the window might look
Like during the winter months we do experience winter and we get snow here um but winter is really celebrated at Middlebury our academic calendar is tailored to celebrate winter we operate on a 414 academic system which means that during the fall semester and the spring semester students take four
Classes and during the month of January which is a shorter term that we call J Term you take just one class J Term is a really fun time on campus because you’re going to have lots of time outside class to um participate in Winter term workshops where maybe you’re part of a
Dance group um learning a new dance style or you’re learning to make granola or B bread um or maybe you’re spending more time off campus skiing we Middlebury College is one of only two schools in the country with their own downhill ski mountain so um it’s lots of
Fun for students who know how to ski um or who want to learn how to ski and during J Term you have lots of free time to um explore that as well it’s a really nice break in between the the two normal academic semesters and it’s a time um of
Rest um and of kind of um exploring new things at Middlebury it’s also a time of great flexibility you only have to be on campus for two of your 4J terms so you could choose to stay home or work or get an internship uh and finally I want to
Talk a little bit about admission to Middlebury so we use a holistic review process when we read applications this means that we care about you as a student in your academic context but also you as a person in your community context we are need blind and we meet
100% of demonstrated Financial need for all of our admitted students um so oftentimes middleburry is a lot more affordable than you might assume just thinking about the fact that we’re a private college um but we give very generous financial aid finally Middlebury is test optional which means
That you really do not have to feel pressured to submit an act or SAT score um if you don’t want to and if you do choose to submit those scores again we review them in the context of where you’re coming from what other students um from your high school are receiving
On their tests and things like that um but really 50% of our applicants and 50% of our admitted students don’t submit test scores so you don’t have to feel pressured to submit those uh thank you all so much for coming this is my contact information um if you want to
Stay in touch or to learn more about Middlebury thank you next up we have University of Michigan hi everyone thanks so much for joining us um I’m just putting in the chat our link to the fall poster for the University of Michigan as I get situated
And share my screen let just make sure that’s coming out okay as I adjust things and again just to reintroduce or introduce myself uh my name is christor my pronoun are Heim I serve as a regional recruitment coordin within the office of undergraduate admissions I work primarily with students from
California as well as my home state of Bo I’ve actually participated in a Mastery transcript TalkBack a couple of years ago um so it is my pleasure to reconnect with the community please know that we do review Master transcript within our system within our application review system so very familiar and we’ll
Talk about a little bit about those fine points throughout the course of the presentation but but we wanted to introduce Michigan through the lens of First Technology and the lens upon which the university were founded upon if you’re able to view the images and the words on the screen in front of you
You’ll see that in 1817 the oju Odawa and B Munitions made the largest thing of land transfer heated through the Tre for Med so that their children could be educated we always find a vast important in two acknowledge of lands upon which the University of Michigan founded upon
As well as acknowledge the and the profound contributions of Native Americans to our institution in case you’re not familiar with the University of Michigan we were founded in the city of Detroit Michigan in 1817 and moved to our current location of Anarbor Michigan in 1837 Anarbor is located in southeast
Michigan which is about 45 minutes west of downtown Detroit it is consistently recognized as one of the top college towns in America as it provides both a vibrant City field with more than 300 restaurants in the downtown area as well as access to Nature as it is nestled
Alongside the hiran river many students do ask me Chris what is the University of Michigan made up of is it primarily michiganders state of Michigan students you can see if you’re able to view those you know images in front of you as well as the numbers we’re about 50/50 so 50%
Instate 50% out of state um in terms of our total undergraduate population it’s a little over 32,000 students with students coming from over 120 different countries 14% of our students identifies as first generation students the first in family to attend a university 18% of our students are palale eligible 27% of
Our students self-identify as students of color and 177% identify as members of the lgbtq plus community so if you’re able to again view the images in front of you you’ll see that the geographic as well as ethnic diversity illustrated by the slide indicates that your experience at the University of Michigan will be
Greatly enhanced by students who are coming from all across the country as well as across the globe um we often ask this the students our students will ask us what attracts students to Michigan It Is our commitment to the undergraduate experience you’ll see some of the accolades in terms of the rankings with
Our specific schools and colleges but the main thing we wanted to emphasize is that we do offer uh 280 different degree programs 14 undergraduate schools and colleges we have a very Rob robust 15 to15 to1 students of Faculty ratio I’ll get those numbers on this slide here and
Our math and second language courses are caped 18 student for below many students ask Chris is it a large campus in terms of my uh courses 7% of our courses are going to be about 100 students or more yes but also 84% of our classes have
Fewer than 50 students so we always like to acknowledge not only the breath and depth of Michigan but also the different resources and support that we offer our Campus Community um in terms of the on campus living situation housing is guaranteed for all first year students
97% of our students take us up on the offer we do have 18 different uh residence calls we also have what are called Michigan learning communities which are themed communities for students to allow intentionally allow them to find you know their their community Through shared interest for
Example we have wise RP which is women in science and engineering which a lot of students again in intentionally to find their housing units based on their shared interest also we wanted to mention that students at the University of Miss are highly active high high energy as well
As very spirited if you’re able to view the images on the slide in front of you you’ll see that in terms of the on campus experience uh we offer 30 plus entrepreneurship groups as well as over 1600 student clubs and organizations some of the images portrayed on the
Slide in front of you include our solo car team we also have student run musical group Acappella groups Etc as well as a commitment to sustainability efforts it’s called Planet blue and students if there’s um not any of those interests on the slide in front of you
Please know that you’re able to create your own organization on campus all it takes is some initiative as well as a couple of documents and you’ll be hitting the ground running I’d be remissed if I didn’t at least mention our commitment to Athletics we are um the winningest program in the history of
College football for example we also are home to the largest football stadium in the Western Hemisphere if you’re a student athlete out there please know that we offer opportunities in terms of inter mural competitions to continue your athletic talents we also have different activities geared toward students if you’re looking at being a
Fan of our Michigan Athletics U moving forward in your uh college Years last but not least just wrapping up just wanted to spend the last few minutes on our application process Michigan we do employ early action which is non-binding as well as regular decision and you’ll see those dates Illustrated on the slide
In front of you November 1st for early action February 1st for regular decision what I want to also tell students is that we actually give you up until May 1st to commit or pay your enrollment deposit to the University of Michigan so it is a non-binding process for early
Action about half of our students are admitted through early action as well and we continue to be test flexible which is Illustrated on this slide here um about 40% of our students did not submit any form of testing and I also want to illustrate that on this um slide
Here you’ll see that we do require um not only a transcripts but if you’re doing dual enrollment courses outside of your high school school please not that we do require transcripts to be submitted in terms of um completing the application process we also have two supplemental essays that are highly
Leaned on in terms of getting your authentic voice um to the admissions committee so we just wanted to spend again a few moments on the required application items and last but not least just to wrap up my presentation please continue to engage with us we do have various social media channels um in
Terms of finding out more information from current students or finding detailed information from specific schools and colleges for examp app Michigan engineering but we really wanted to um invite you to join us virtually in this space I know 6 minutes is not nearly enough to talk about the
University of Michigan but please know that we are very familiar with the master transcript Consortium and we under are understanding of the transcript and the way that is read and you will be giving full consideration through our po list to group you um so having said that I’ll go ahead and stop
Sharing but before I do I I also want to say go Blue so thank you all for your time and take care all right thank you next up we have Birmingham uh Southern College hi everyone I’m gonna go ahead and share my screen okay hello my name is Hayden
Futural I’m an admission counselor here at Birmingham Southern College thank you all so much for joining us today and I’m going to go ahead and get started with my short presentation so at Birmingham Southern College we are honored to be one of the 40 colleges that changes lives
Um so a retired New York Times editor went around and she found 40 colleges that she believes that students life could be changed in four years um and Birmingham Southern was named one of those on our right you can see our student body breakdown so we have 950
Students um they come from 30 States and 11 countries are represented on campus and over 27% of our students identify as non-white our average class size is 14 students and that breaks down to a 10 to1 student to faculty ratio so not only are you going to know your classmates
But you’re also going to know your professors the ladies in the cafeteria different things like that so we are a small school with big opportunities we are a private liberal arts college located in Birmingham Alabama um Birmingham is one of the largest cities in the state of Alabama
So so many opportunities for internships work study programs things like that we have over 80 student organizations on campus 13 fraternities and sororities um and we have 22 Division 3 Sports we also work alongside a lot of um different areas in Birmingham to help with our intern experiences and lots of our study
Abroad opportunities as well um we also have a unique exploration term built into the curriculum so we also follow that 414 schedule so you’re going to take four classes in the fall four classes in the spring and then our e term in this month of January um so you
Can study abroad for the month you can have a job an internship anything that you’re interested in so we have over 50 areas of study at Birmingham Southern College our highlighted ones are going to be our top five most popular so that includes business education pre-health pre-law
And psychology um and you do not have to declare your major till the end of your sophomore year so that gives you four semesters and two e terms to really see what you’re interested in um a couple of different ways to apply to BSC so we have three different ways
You can apply on our website bsc.edu apply the commment application or Coalition on score um we also have two different ways to apply so standard and test optional we’ve been test optional since about 2016 so we understand that not everyone’s test scores is a great representation of them um for your
Standard application all you need is your transcript and then your test scores for test optional all I need is your your transcript and then an essay or personal statement um really just something to show off your writing skills every student is going to receive a merit-based scholarship based off of
Your GPA and your uh test scores or test optional is just your GPA um so this is this year’s ranges of test scores if you choose to have a standard application that’s going to be the top uh scholarships and then if you choose test optional that’s going to be the bottom
Left scholarship grid we also have special scholarships the please have a deadline of February 15th and um your admission counselor is going to be the first person to read your application so we’re going to flag you for different scholarships that we think that you would be really great for um so that’s
Basically what we are here for and then I know this was really short but I want to leave a good amount of time for our Q&A as well um I highly recommend connecting with our admission staff and coming and visiting our campus um and different things like that so thank you guys
Okay if I could have all the presenters turn their camera on we’re going to go in the same order that you presented give me a second I’ll share my screen and if you could give us advice for someone going through the college search process yeah of course uh thank you so much
Um I really think you know kind of the the best way to um you know to see if you’re going be a good fit at an institution is to get on campus um I I know I’m probably speaking for everyone on you know the this Zoom call right now
We’re all having information sessions we’re all doing um you know tours open houses um and you know it it’s a great way for you to be able to see if you’re going to be a good fit at an institution um you know see the other students that
Are on campus uh eating in the dining hall um you know walking the library um again so I highly recommend checking out campus um you know to see if you’re going to be a good fit there yeah I completely agree Rich thanks for saying that I would also add
On um your admissions counselors are real people like you are getting some emails and things that are coming just from you know the marketing team but really A lot of the stuff that they’re sending you is really from someone who cares about you and your experience and
So please feel welcome to respond to them please engage with them any question is a good question the reason I got into higher education is because I was the first in my family to go and I had no idea what I was doing and I just wanted people to not make the same
Mistakes I did so we all have these other experiences that we want to share with you too so please feel welcome to engage with your counselors as they reach out to you by text email whatever and tell your counselors the best way to get in touch with
You I would encourage um all students who are going through the college process to really focus on fit and focus on um what you’re looking for in a college um just by being on this um virtual Fair tonight you’ve seen like so many different um types of colleges and
Colleges tailor um you know their experiences to different kinds of students and might work better for different kinds of students and um as a student in that position it’s exciting because you have so many different options but I would really um focus on what will fit you best as an individual
And don’t be pressured by um your friends or your peers or parents or what other people are telling you and really focus on what you’re looking for in a college experience I guess my advice um would be tailored towards the specific you know context of today’s session which is
Mastery transcript is just to inquire whether or not the school is familiar with the context of your background coming from your high school in particular um you know having read Master transcrip for the past few years I can tell you that is quite different from traditional transcripts so just
Putting yourself out there and asking the XYZ school that you’re interested in if they have read or are familiar or you can provide any other Insight that could be helpful throughout the process because we tend to receive questions from students coming from Master transcrip schools just asking if we’re
Familiar and it always reassures them by responding yes we are Etc so just framing it back to what we’re here today to present to you um that would be my best advice it just alleviates all you know the pressures and you can control what you can control which is your
Direct partnership with the respective school or univers and basically just to reiterate what everyone has said here tonight um just really finding not only the best fit for you but really if you’re able and willing to go on campus and really tour um you’ll be able to not only speak
To prospective students and your admission counselor but just looking around and seeing what everyone else is doing seeing if you know this is something that you’re interested in I always tell my students three really great things to look for on campus where you’re going to study where you’re going
To eat and where you’re going to sleep um those are really important things okay I love that um we do have time for one more and this one is actually one of my favorites um so give me a second I will share my screen all right so I know you have some
Pretty cool things about your institution so what is one thing you want students to remember about your school just one thing starting from the great um so uh we were actually ranked the number one Institution in terms of Christmas spirit um which I think is a
Cool little fun fact um for the holidays uh we have probably a 40 foot Christmas tree in our resin Hall um we have a giant gingerbread making competition um for our students where students actually start lining up at midnight um we have a giant train that
Goes across our whole um dining hall um so yeah Christmas Christmas spirit is huge at scene I love that answer um so at presc like we mentioned it’s very field-based and experiential and driven by the student but I think one of the things that I think is important is we call our Majors
Competences on purpose right like at the end of your program we want you to be able to demonstrate your competence in your subject area and what you’re interested in not just that you took a major amount of courses in it and so that’s really important we want you to
Have a big say in in what drives you and what makes you feel engaged in it um and our course sizes are small because we want you to get the chance to really demonstrate your critical thinking your problem solving and your communication skills you know your workplace is never
Going to be you sitting in the back of um a 200 person lecture hall taking notes from a grad presenter um it’s going to be you sitting down with your boss and giving ideas and solutions to problems and so those are the skills we really want you working on throughout your program at
Presc um one of the most me of things and important things about Middlebury to me um as a student and also one thing that I’d like to highlight as a counselor now is the way that Middlebury really feels like a close-knit community um a lot of times when I’m talking to
Perspective students um people are nervous about moving to Vermont or um being in a more rural area and they’re wondering um whether they’re going to feel isolated or like there’s not a lot going on um and I want to assure you and um to kind of reinforce the idea that
Middlebury feels like such a community um we have kind of a student body of 2500 so um it’s not tiny but um it’s not so big uh where you feel like you’re getting lost um but you still get to keep meeting people throughout all four years and it’s a really Vibrant
Community of students who are engaged and there are lots of fun things happening on campus um and that’s the most that was the most important part of the college experience for me was the the friends I made and the connections I made and um feeling like part of that
Community um my initial reaction was to say that beating our rival in football the past few years but I’ll kind of tailor back a little bit and go to our retention rate which at Michigan is 97% which is essentially the percent of first year students who are choosing to
Return to campus after that pivotal year transition shows that they’re supported that they are um really utilizing the resources at their disposal and also that they’re satisfied and you students you see high school seniors on the call you deserve to have an oncampus experience where you’re going to be
Happy where you’re going to enjoy that balance moving forward because it is an important piece of you know the maturation process heading into adulthood and retention rate is something that we highly stress to at least do some dedicated research because it does show in terms of the Campus
Community if the support is in place and also if the students are taking up um that type of resource in terms of returning to campus after that pivotal first year away from home I think one thing to remember about Birmingham Southern College is that we are a small school with big
Opportunities so with over 80 student organizations 22 Division 3 Sports and 950 students um really we like to say that our students are over involved um every student on campus is more than likely either an athlete or a Greek life someone in community service um so you just have so many different
Opportunities here in Birmingham and so we always try to help our students find anything that they’re interested in all right great um so so much variety I love that um so my last plug is to contact these folks they are the experts uh reach out to them they’re there to
Guide you whether it’s to their institution or not um they can find the right fit for you and answer the questions that you need so snag that information either out of the chat or if you got it from the presentation um or if you’re watching this recording scroll
Back and get that information um so that you can contact these folks um so that wraps up this 45 minute session there is one more session tonight so definitely sign up if you haven’t already and a recording of This in all of the sessions that are happening tonight are at
Strives scan.com slm Mastery thank you to our presenters thank you to the folks joining us live and to everyone that is watching this recording good luck and have a good night
