All right so uh we went through the first part of the uh presentation yesterday about the cartesian dorian narrative we got as far as the year 1650 starting with ancient greeks going up to the death of descartes in 1650 i want to spend a few slides just recapping because this is
Such an important period the work of descartes and his subsequent influence so let’s just recap uh from yesterday and then we’ll talk about developments after descartes all right so the narrative the cartesian darwinian darwinian narrative is a false view of reality an assault on truth a grand deception that has impacted all domains
Of thought in all aspects of society especially today through the media entertainment social media etc is having an enormous influence on the the youth especially the narrative can be summarized in the following statement if there is a god he does not intervene in the affairs of men
No miracles are allowed in the cartesian darwinian world the second part of that is taken right from descartes work lamont so continuing on with our overview here we talked about the ancient roots of the narrative extending back to the the greeks and materialist and skeptic thought but it was formally introduced in its
Modern form in the year 1637 by a masked man who’s rene descartes under mysterious circumstances that were most likely demonic dreams the coming of the narrative was foretold in sacred scripture in ii peter the narrative been has been destructive almost beyond imagination because think of it like a spider web the
Narrative is the center of the web over time the web has expanded into all areas of thought and impacted all aspects of the culture so the the stage was set for the emergence of descartes uh during the renaissance 15 16th centuries when there was a revival of class classic greek scholarship brought it
Back from the crusades and then that would spread uh fairly far throughout europe during this time due to the development of the printing press by 1600 we talked about the ancient greek philosophies and arguments were being set forth in intellectual circles throughout europe um and so a broad mood of skepticism and
Materialist thought um permeated the minds of europe michael buckley in his uh important work at the origins of modern atheism said at the opening of the 17th century there was a widespread conviction that the atheists were at the gates and so the church was debating among theologians
How to contest against the rise of skepticism that was illustrated by french philosopher michael montane he wrote in his apology for raymond saban he asked the question has the quest for truth which has kept man busy for so many centuries actually enriched him with some new power or solid truth
He said that skepticism can be best conceived through the form of a question what do i know rene descartes would soon come on the scene and try to answer that exact question so the masked man as we said was rene descartes born 1596 died in 1650 and at a young age by 1619
He had graduated school including law school and joined joined the the army and he became convinced by the spring of 1619 that he had a great personal destiny one that would introduce a new method of thought a new system to solve questions and problems in every domain of knowledge he wrote to
Conceal nothing i propose to give the public an entirely new science which will allow of a general solution of all problems which can be proposed how incredibly incredibly ambitious but then he talked about the sciences are now masked from us we can’t get to the ultimate meaning we can’t understand reality in
His mind the mastery move they will appear in all their beauty and must not he himself go masked until such a time as he meets what may find himself able in fulfillment of his mission to come forward publicly on its behalf so a great deal of confidence ambition
Uh and pride is is apparent in some of the personal writings of descartes so the story gets uh really interesting in the winter of 1619 when he was at his winter quarters near olm germany he discovered during this period when he was trying to develop this new method he discovered according to his
Biographer that there was a fraternity of learned man under the name of the brethren of the rosy cross they were the sort of men which understood everything and promised to help men to a new wisdom brethren of the rosy cross are the rosicrucians so the uh an example of the writings from from
That time from the rose of christians they talked about or invited all learned who would make themselves known to us and come into our brotherhood shall find more wonderful secrets by us than heretofore they’re able to believe or utter so we see this parallel type
Of of uh quest of descartes he thinks it matches what the recruiting roles of christians are all about and so he seeks to make contact there is there’s not inconvertible evidence that he did make contact but through the the writings of the most detailed biography written by bellier who had access to descartes
Private notes uh it’s very likely that he did in fact make contact with rosicrucians all right so on the night of uh november 10th 1619 this was recalled by descartes to be the most important night of his night uh night of his life uh in the life of mr descartes his biographer
Talks about that he fell into a state of uh fell into a state to receive impressions of dreams and vision that evening before he retired a man descartes referred to as the genius so this is very likely somebody that was involved with the rose of christians maybe
Uh brought him into initiation or at least uh attracted him to the movement but the genius told descartes they would that he would receive dreams that night to pro provide guidance as far as the way forward to develop this new method that night in fact descartes did receive
Three dreams which he believed were from on high but in truth were likely of demonic origin descartes wrote that in the dream a spirit descended to take possession of him it was a number of years after this that descartes actually began his major writings so in 1628 he goes to moves back to
Holland begins writing a book called le monde translated as the world and when he sat down he he began to develop his philosophy and he began by asking the question what do i know he concluded his existence could not be doubted it was a clear and distinct idea
That was innate and independent of the sense so this became kind of the basis of his method he wanted to reduce questions and in all domains all areas of learning down to what were clear and distinct ideas that could not be doubted so we tried to extend that to all areas
The new philosophy we mentioned was called rationalism rationalism asserts that because everything must be reduced to clear and distinct ideas that there cannot be anything which exceeds the power of human reason to comprehend that’s a good definition by joshua piper in his book scholasticism so lamonde or the world was intended by
Descartes to be the first publication presenting the uh the world with his new method it was ready for a publication in 1633 but because of the galileo controversy descartes pulled it from publishing just a a few weeks before it was scheduled to go to the printer there what was so radical about lamont
We discussed yesterday that it was a direct attack on the creation of providence framework and involved the reassignment of origins from historical theology to natural science it was meant to start the narrative in the le mans devart descartes invites the reader to enter into a holy new world
He said let us suppose god creates only matter that continues moving thereafter in accordance with the ordinary laws of nature he says even if god creates nothing more than this the laws of nature are sufficient to cause the parts of this chaos to disentangle and in the form of a most perfect world
Containing all that appears in the actual world so what he’s doing he’s setting out a blueprint that will be eventually take over various areas of science cosmology biology geology we’re allowing god to create chaos in the form of just random matter and according to descartes the laws of nature themselves will organize without
Any additional miraculous interaction on the part of god so this becomes very close to materialist philosophy even though descartes introduced this method as a means to combat the skeptics and materialists in europe at the time he clarifies this is by nature i do not mean some deity or other sort of
Imaginary power rather i use the word to signify matter itself and he reminds or insists that god will never perform a miracle in the new world after deciding not to publish le monde the attack on the creation providence framework would become known in 16 through 37 through his famous work
Discourse on method le mans was not actually published during his lifetime but in the late 1600s it it finally was published so in the disc uh course on method in part five after he talks about his his general philosophy the approach to it as far as uh reducing everything down to
Ideas that that cannot be doubted he looks to demonstrate how he has applied this and refers the reader back even though it was not published to lamonde it explains uh summarizes what he demonstrated in lamont basically uh he talks about how he demonstrated scientifically the formation of the sun the earth all
Geological features the emergence of life he very much over represents what actually he he was able to show in le mans then he goes in and he talks specifically about the concept of uniformitarianism or gradualism he writes that it is certain the action by which god now preserves the world
Is just the same as that by which he at first created it so this is a radical break from the creation providence framework that was talked about earlier in the week he goes on to say through this means alone all things which are purely material might in course of time have become such
As we observe them to be at the present and their nature is much easier to understand when we see them coming to pass little by little in this matter than were we to consider them all complete to begin with so he says well if we extend these concepts of gradualism
That we observe today all the way back to the beginning of creation then we don’t need to invoke a deity to to explain them or to explain how everything come about descartes lasting legacy the the specifics of his uh rationalistic philosophy were reputed really by john locke and others uh shortly after
After descartes death but his lasting legacy is the separation of faith and reason the rejection of scholasticism which afforded each domain its own method but recognized theology as the queen of sciences the improper reassignment of origins to natural science and the overall theme that if that if god exists he
Does not intervene in the affairs of men no miracles are allowed in the cartesian world pope john john paul ii in faith and reason talked about this period he said as a result of the exaggerated rationalism of certain thinkers three merged eventually a philosophy which was separate from and absolutely independent
Of the contents of faith what for patristic and medieval thought was in both theory in practice a profound unity was destroyed all right so that takes us up uh on our recap from what we talked about yesterday so by the time descartes died he uh his writings his philosophy had influenced
Um that group of of uh domains of thought and that was soon to be expanded uh in the following centuries and the the destruction began immediately after descartes death in 1651 any any hope that cartesian philosophy would turn back the skeptics and materialists in europe came crashing down that was the year that
English philosopher thomas hobbes published his his work leviathan and outwardly materialist work he insisted that the universe is the aggregate of all bodies that which is no part of it is nothing and consequently nowhere in other words all that exists is the material there’s nothing outside of it
He also attacked the the holy scriptures he wrote that i can find nowhere that any man shall live in the torments everlastingly the books of the new testament were not obligatory only good and safe advice the most important influence of hobbes concerns uh the influence of the entry of materialism into political science
And political thought he described uh man’s history as a man being originally in a primordial state of constant war mankind eventually pursued articles of peace and this led to what he called social contracts and commonwealths in these modern commonwealths he wrote man surrenders individual individual rights to the government
All power all in authority including that held by the church is turned over to the state this role of government under the narrative was advanced by john locke who some consider to be a closet materialist lock had some good things to say about private rights and so forth private property but
In the end he followed this very narrow view of the role of government to protect property and so forth for luck the great in chief in for government is the preservation of their property by fostering the production of wealth and by providing perfection to its citizens and many americans today would say well
What’s wrong with that that should be the role of government but that’s a very limited role compare this with the view of saint thomas he wrote that since then the eternal law is the plan of government in the chief governor all the plans of government in the inferior governors
Must be derived from the eternal law all laws insofar as they partake of right reason are derived from the eternal law so here we can see a clear line of thought that would never allow for example abortion to be legal in a country uh based upon true christian thought
In in 1670 an all-out assault on the sacred scriptures began primarily this was led by uh spinoza a philosopher that was a rationalist after descartes very much in line with descartes although he was also a pantheist and he was considered one of the most influential philosophers of all time
He applied rationalism to sacred scripture initiating the attack of rationalism or what is often referred to today as negative higher criticism negative higher criticism on the reliability of god’s written word in 1670 he wrote for example of his intention to examine the bible afresh in a careful and partial and
Unfettered spirit using the light of reason the universal rule that guided his work is to accept nothingness authoritative that we do not perceive very clearly so this goes back to descartes clear and distinct ideas spinoza is saying we have to apply that same rationalistic criterion when we look at sacred
Scripture and we’re going to reject anything that does not meet that that criterion he writes nowhere does scripture assert that it assert that anything happens which contradicts or cannot follow from the laws of nature miracles require causes they follow not from some mysterious and royal power
But from the laws in order of nature so here we see how the rationalist has has a clear intent to reject the prophecies and miracles of sacred scripture of course once you do that the the whole authority of scripture soon falls apart and will eventually be uh rejected as a myth
Along this time or shortly thereafter the the heresy of deism emerges at the end of the 1600s through the works of john tolland and others and this was just a predictable and natural outcome of rationalism in 1696 tollen wrote we hold that reason is the only found foundation of all certitude
We maintain that there is nothing in the gospel contrary to reason nor above it and that no christian doctrine can be properly called a mystery so if if there is a mystery that doesn’t conform with our ability to understand fully then that will be soon rejected as as not true inspiration
Not not a um not part of the word of god he says what is evidently repugnant to clear and distinct ideas or to our common notion is to is contrary to reason moreover that which is to be believed must be easily comprehended all right so we’re you know we see this
This uh dual path of theology and uh philosophy in among the european theologians and philosophers they both uh would would simultaneously write works that reflected this rejection of the supernatural in the area of philosophy the arch skeptic david hume uh wrote that if a theological or philosophical work does not
Involve quantities or experimental reasoning experimental reasoning then committed to the flames uh he wrote that trying to answer questions about god is to go entirely beyond the reach of human reason we can know nothing more about god than what can be observed in nature so we don’t need to
Cite sacred scripture or the teachings of the church if all that can be known about god is available in nature probably the most influential philosopher in the enlightenment period is emmanuel kant um a german philosopher and critique of pre uh a pure reason he wrote of his attempt to introduce a complete revolution
In the procedure of metaphysics after the example of the geometricians this is descartes and spinoza in natural philosophers in that work he chides the scholastics for treating the existence of god freedom of will and immorality as a science which is at the very outset dogmatical and for failing to consider the ability
Or inability of reason for such an undertaking he concluded that a supreme being is a conception which uh perfects and crowns the system of human cognition but the objective reality of which can be neither approved nor disproved by pure reason he wrote that only the moral law can be
Known through reason alone in fact questions of metaphysics have a still higher end the answer to the question what we ought to know ought to do if the will is free if there is a god in the future world so he concludes that living the moral
Law through a system of ethics is the ultimate duty and end of man that alone will lead to happiness so you can see how just following this rationalistic thread we soon discard even the need for revelation under the the work of kant and others he wrote that it is not essential and
Hence not necessary for everyone to know what god does or has done for his salvation but it is essential to know what man himself must do in order to become worthy of god’s assistance so reason runs supreme the philosophy of kant was extremely influential but toward the end of the 1800s nietzsche
Discards the whole conclusion of kant and his whole philosophy in the matter of a paragraph describing kant and his disciples he says they are read of the christian god and now deliver all the more firmly that they must cling to christian morality we hold otherwise when one gives up the
Christian faith one pulls the right to christian morality from under one’s feet feet christianity is a system a whole view of things thought out together by breaking one main concept out of it the faith in god one breaks the whole nothing necessary necessary remains in one’s hand briefly going through
Some of the works of the higher critics the most important critics during the 1700s a big turning event was the publication of what’s called the ramirez fragments um between 1774 and 1778. this initiated what is in today’s circles of biblical criticism called the first quest for jesus but there’s some pretty radical
Concepts uh in in the fragments uh ramirez taught that or wrote that jesus was merely a teacher of rational practical religion only followers of his ethical teachings are christians he calls for calls for tolerance of dias and rationalists who are nearer to true religion than the orthodox according to
Ramirez he wrote that the apostles invented the concept of christ as a messiah and tailored accounts to make it appear that jesus fulfilled old testament prophecy he wrote that there’s no way to know if scripture was corrupted moses could not have written the pentateuch special revelation is possible the resurrection narratives are fabricated
Jesus never taught that he was divine so all these conclusions are traceable right back to descartes in the the philosophy of rationalism the destructive uh consequences were were very much uh anticipated again that his work initiated what is called the first quest for jesus and in this in this quest it’s really
The the role of the biblical scholar rationalistic biblical scholar that sees himself on a quest to find the real historical jesus hidden under the layers of fabrication in the bible so in other words they say if anything any account of jesus involves the miraculous or prophecies that can’t be
Real that’s a layer of fabrication so they want to strip out all that is fabricated and what you’re left with is a very natural not supernatural christ ramirez’s work generated a whole series of life of jesus works uh during the late 1700s and all during the 1800s
Uh just to summarize the the degree of ridiculous conclusions in these uh carl venturi i wrote uh from 1800 to 1802 in his works he uh accounts he said that accounts of jesus raising the dead are explained by the sick emerging from comas all miracles involved forces of nature
That were possible due to jesus’s understanding of these laws uh heinrich paulus in 1828 issued his life of jesus and he said that a reported miracle merely indicates that eyewitnesses were not aware of the secondary causes behind the event for example healings involved jesus’s advanced knowledge of the nervous system and
Medicine jesus did really really did not walk on water but along the shoreline jesus’s uh calming of the storm was not miraculous as the storm was already passing the feeding of the five thousand was accomplished through the sharing of food everyone had with them those raised from the dead were
Buried prematurely only to recover jesus did not actually die he was only in a death-like trance so as as these critics went on through the century became more and more ridiculous but they were they were trying to find a way to rationalistically explain all the miraculous in scripture it was demanded by descartes
Uh guidelines or his rules in 1830 we see a huge gains or in the 1830s huge gains were made for the narrative in all areas of thought science philosophy and theology one key event was in 1830 when charles lyell published his principles of geology this marked the clear entry of the
Narrative into the field of science through a major scientific work lyell’s theme is that the present is the key to the past the present is the key to the past and he argued that the genesis flood never occurred in fact all geological observations could be explained through current
Processes working over eons of time at the same level intensity observed today so here again we see this clear break with the creation providence framework he said there was no miraculous uh great flood that occurred we can explain all geological features by applying processes we observed today extending that back to
Ancient times but you can tell he’s a child of descartes he wrote that the value of all geological evidence must depend entirely on the degree of confidence which we feel in regard to the permanency permanency of the laws of nature their immutable constancy alone can enable us to reason
The uniformity of the plan being once assumed he just assumes a uniformity of of these observations all the way back to the beginning once assumed the deficiency of our information replacing some of the most obscure parts of the present creation will be removed uh lyle had a huge influence on the young darwin
Who lost his faith during the voyage of the beagle from 1831 to 1836. darwin lost his faith reading lyell and and applying that view of geology uh during his voyage darwin came back to england after the voyage was completed and became a very close confidant very close friend of lyell and
A mentor to him in the origin of species the famous work of darwin and published in 1859 darwin acknowledged his death to lyell saying he who can read sir charles lyell’s grand work on the principles of geology yet does not admit how vast have been the past periods of time
May at once close this volume so darwin’s theory is absolutely dependent upon the time long time span that was created or given for evolution to work over by lyell he also wrote that we may feel certain that the ordinary succession by generation has never once been broken and that no cataclysm has
Desolated the whole world so like lyell darwin is is denying the great flood so we must always remember that darwinism itself is a uniformitarian process it requires um observation observable processes today extending back to uh 550 million years ago the cambrian explosion when apparently all life emerged and then soon began to
Diverge to explain everything we observe in the animal world all right other major developments a famous german critic named david strauss issued a two-volume life of jesus work in 1835-1836 this made a yet another radical break that it that exceeded what maris ramirez and others had already done
He viewed all miracles as pure myth uh and that he said it’s more rational to ex to view the scripture the scripture account of miracles as myth rather than trying to explain these away as acts of nature this non-historical view of sacred scripture spread to the old testament in
Part due to the influence of the philosopher hegel who viewed history in an evolutionary light for example in 1835 vodki wrote in his religion of israel he portrayed christianity as a result of religious evolution extending back to the old testament from which religious thought developed slowly through successive stages of
Simile allegory and myth thus biblical writings especially those of the old testament are not so much a chronicle of true historical events they are a record of the evolution of religious concepts which eventually found synthesis in jesus christ it is a rationalist marriage of theology philosophy and history that ultimately results
In the full documentary documentary hypothesis or sometimes this is referred to as jedp that was set forth in the late 1800s by wellhausen in its fullest form here’s an example of the view of the pentateuch that is uh common to this documentary hypothesis we see according to this view the penetic was not
Completed until just a few centuries before christ was born and there were numerous editors and writers and redactors during this time so what emerges from this view is is that sacred scripture uh doesn’t have a single author through moses which is a traditional view or that the penantic uh by by moses
And that it is uh full of errors and and in contradictions well during the 1800s the penetration of rationalism really really reached an alarming rate pope pius ix and others issued a number of condemning decrees against pantheism naturalism and rationalism some of the condemned errors included
The view that all action of god upon man and the world is to be denied this is exactly the summary statement of descartes remember that it was an error to view human reason without any reference whatsoever to god as the sole arbiter of truth and falsehood and of good and evil
Is an error to hold that divine revelation is imperfect and therefore subject to a continual and infinite indefinite progress corresponding with the advancement of human reason that the prophecies and miracles set forth and recorded in sacred scripture are the fictions of poets it’s an error to hold that the old and
The new testament contain mythical inventions and jesus christ himself is a myth so all we’ve been talking about as far as the fallout of descartes had a huge impact it was it was confronted and condemned by the church very strongly during several decades of the 1800s but this this response really
Had limited effect because the narrative had been at work already for more than 200 years dating back to descartes there were other works of rationalists in nature in in addition to darwin’s origin of species ernest renan published a very influential life of jesus um that furthered this this is
This rationalistic view under the guise of real history but basically by the time that darwin’s origin of species was published in 1859 it really marked the completion of the the cartesian darwinian narrative because the the areas of theology and philosophy had already been heavily influenced and corrupted under this rationalistic assumption and
Finally with darwin not only did had geology succumb with lyell but now all of the biology uh had succumbed um to after 1859 the scientific community in england began to back darwinism and darwin’s close supporters formed a secret of what was called an ex-club contained ten members
Is described in uh the book darwin by dames and moore as a sort of masonic darwinian lodge a dining club devoted to science untrammeled by any theology and this was very successful in taking over bringing in uh rational or racialism and naturalism into the scientific um groups in england and also
In the u.s by 1914 surveys show us that a majority a vast majority of the elite scientific minds in america were already committed to darwinism and and had lost their faith in god very early in the 20th century in 1873 pope leo in the in his providence dais um just very very
Important encyclical and scriptural interpretation in the opening paragraphs he wrote it must be clearly understood whom we have to oppose and contend against and what are their tactics and aims we have to meet the rationalists true children and inheritors of the older heretics who have rejected even the scraps and
Remnants of christian belief they deny that there is any such thing as revelation or inspiration or holy scripture at all they see instead only the forgeries and falsehoods of men so in in the last icons book you’ll see many more examples of the rationalistic thought being applied to sacred scripture
After descartes and before pope leo wrote this in 1873 so you’ll you’ll see just the the tremendously destructive impact that had occurred by the end of the the 19th century he also talked about higher criticism writing that there has arisen to the detriment of religion an inept
Method dignified by the name of the higher criticism really he’s talking about negative criticism here which pretends to judge the origin integrity and authority of each book from internal indications alone it will make enemies of religion much more bold and confident in attacking and mangling the sacred books and this
Vaunted higher criticism will resolve itself into the reflection of the bias and the prejudice of the critics that’s so true you you read works uh across the the range of critics none of these rationalistic critics agree on anything they all have you know are applying their own reason their own thoughts to
The interpretation of scripture you would think there would be some consensus after four centuries of this but there really is not all right writing in 1873 david strauss he was was the one that introduced that the two volume life of jesus work in 1835 1836 he had a very long life and wrote
As an elderly man reflecting back on the shift that occurred in europe in in the western world due to this dual attack on truth by the theologians and natural science he wrote in the old faith and the new that against doctrine and opposition has arisen natural science has long endeavored to
Substitute the evolutionary theory in place of the conception of creation but it was charles darwin who succeeded the theory is unquestionably still very imperfect but we can see the direction it will take vainly did we philosophers and critical theologians decree the extermination of miracles so that they they applied the the
Process the rationale the methods of descartes and spinoza fighting against miracles trying to get them to be rejected but he said we could neither dispense with a miraculous agency nor point to any natural force able to supply an alternative darwin has demonstrated this force he has opened the door
To finally cast out miracles everyone who knows what miracles will imply will praise him as one of the greatest benefactors of the human race well as the 20th century unfolded hitler and many others just demonstrated that the human race did not benefit from darwinian thought he concluded this work by saying if we
Would speak as honest men we must acknowledge we are no longer christians well if christianity was to be dethroned something had to take place and so there was no shortage of options ernest haekel who we talked about hatred’s embryos so he was a scientist but also a philosopher he introduced in his
Book the riddle of the universe in 1899 a new faith for mankind in which the two ideas religion and science would blend into one he called this monism he explained that atheism suspect substantially agrees with monism or pantheism of the modern scientists it’s only another expression of it
He said that the true revelation the source of rational knowledge is to be sought in nature alone just another reflection of descartes in hume and all these philosophers that had come before him the foe is christianity and it is the sacred duty of every honorable thinker to devote himself to the settlement
Of that conflict according to hegel one of the uh most influential philosophers after darwin was nietzsche and he too rejected christianity he embraced the narrative but what is really interesting about nietzsche is that he understood how destructive the narrative would be so strauss and hakel they had all these visions of achieving
Finally achieving this utopia once christian christianity was out of the way nietzsche at least was enough of a visionary to see that the narrative would be extremely destructive in the gay science published in 1882 he wrote the following he said have you not heard of that
Madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours ran to the marketplace and cried incessantly i seek god i seek god as many of those who do not believe in god were standing around just then he provoked much laughter whither is god he cried i shall tell you we have killed him
You and i all of us are his murderers but how have we done this how were we able to drink up the sea who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon whether are we moving are we not plunging continually do we not feel the breath of empty space
Has it not become colder is not night and more night coming all the while god is dead god remains dead and we have killed him how shall we the murderers of all murderers comfort ourselves what was holiest and most powerful of all has bled to death under our knives
Who will wipe this blood off of us is not the greatest of this deed too great for us must we not ourselves become gods simply to seem worthy of it here the madmen fell silent and looked again and they too were silent and stared at him in astonishment
At last he threw his lantern on the ground and it broke and went out i come too early he said my time has not yet come this tremendous event is on its way it has not yet reached the ears of man and yet they have done it themselves so very um insightful
View of what was to come once christianity was rejected by so many of the western people in the western world all right so um after 1900 there were many developed developments that impacted the rest of their the remaining areas of thought there’s much detail in the book of on
Darwin’s last icon about this basically there are two main events that that are important to be aware of one is the emergence of a mega philosophy called humanism which combined materialism or atheism and rationalism both of which rely upon darwinism and took uh and then the philosophy of humanism took control of education
Largely through the philosopher john dewey and his influence on the nea and then of course the modernist heresy which emerged shortly after the after 1900 which weakened the ability of the church to respond there’s much information on modernism in the book basically john dewey when we talk about his influence
On education he brought to it the acceptance of the narrative he wrote in 1909 when descartes said the nature of physical things is much more easily conceived than when they are beheld coming gradually into existence the modern world became self-conscious of the logic that was since forth to control it the
Logic of which darwin’s origin of species is the latest scientific achievement so he saw very clearly the the integration of cartesian thought in darwinian science in 1933 the humanist put out their manifesto this is a very interesting read it is laced absolutely laced with evolutionary thought in the introduction they say the time
Has come for widespread recognition on the radical changes and religious beliefs throughout the modern world we regard the universe as self-existing and not created that man is a part of nature and emerged as a result of a continuous process that’s evolution holding an organic view of life the traditional
Dualism of mind and body must be rejected man’s religious culture uh is the product of a gradual development this goes back to the theologians following hegel the nature of the universe depicted by modern science makes unacceptable any supernatural cosmic guarantees of human values so moral relativism is very much a part of humanism
The time has passed for theism religion going forward consists of those actions purposes and experiences which are humanly significant art science philosophy friendship and recreation the religious forms and ideas of our fathers are no longer adequate the quest for the good life is the central task for mankind think back to
Epicurus way back in the ancient among the ancient greeks there who said that the the view is to seek pleasure and avoid pain it’s it’s there’s there’s really been no advancement on the philosophy in 25 centuries uh based on what the human is right here all right so humanism was brought into
The public schools through dewey and others in the nea who adopted humanism as the guiding principle educators leveraged this the emerging field of behavior psychology which had already been that had already adopted an evolutionary view of man one educational pioneer of the early 20th century was stanley hall he his world view was
Explained clearly in his writings about education he wrote that nature and man there is nothing outside above or beyond these in the universe and now and only now is man beginning to realize that he is truly supreme in all the universe man sees his destiny which is to rule
The world within and without by the power that comes from knowledge he must go into to control where he has controlled this is his vocation as man science is both his organ of apprehension and his tool by which he must make his sovereignty complete so it’s up to mankind to create
The utopia on earth because according to hall and others christianity is no longer accepted as valid another educational giant edward thorndike extended his experiments on conditioning chickens to the classroom after all the logic went humans are merely evolved animals who can be trained to act and believe
If given the right stimulus so this launched a whole new area of educational philosophy and works in the area of that’s called behaviorism one behaviorist john watson wrote it is the business of behavioral psychology to be able to predict and control human activity how can i as a behaviorist get individual to behave
Differently today from the way they acted yesterday how far can we modify behavior by training or conditioning for the past 70 years educational theorists have developed very effective methods of manipulating human students and imparting humanist values on innocent children who are sent to public schools and told
