Good evening good evening good evening everyone welcome to the beill web show I am your host camil R Perry and I’m so happy to have you on tonight night uh this is November 14th wow how are we just a week away from Thanksgiving what where has time gone y’all 2023 it’s
Almost over we only got about a maybe a little less than six weeks man but God we thank you uh hey Dad’s girl clothing um Daddy’s girl clothing listen y’all support Daddy’s girl apparel clothing apparel uh definitely do so and let them know be heill sent
You okay and so you get you get you a nice little discount rate but um welcome each and everyone in usual fashion I always greet everyone and say this is the day the Lord has made and we’ll rejoice and be glad in it listen um I
Know we all have a reason to be thankful I know we’re getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving and some that might not celebrate Thanksgiving as what we know it as maybe they’ll just celebrate family coming together some reference it as indigenous day hey what whatever floats your boat we have a reason to be
Grateful to be thankful uh to celebrate that once again we’re yet here and so I’m excited um for my guest that’s on tonight I call him the myth the man the legend okay all the way from Oklahoma but I’ve got a chance to meet him in a
Little Mayberry of a town called Santa Cento College over here in Santa Cento Min campus to be specific spe ific but his name is Dr Von Lawson you probably seen him on maybe last year I actually had him as a introduction to the student guest that we were talking to for him to
Introduce the students because he had more familiarity but now we get to talk to him get to know his life and the series of power of vulnerability uh when I gave him the theme that we’re looking at Look What the Lord Has Done he was
Like oh sis I could talk on that I mean because God has done some great things and I’m excited to hear him share so let me tell you a little bit about van um not only is he like a big brother to me um and just a sweet loving man but he
Loves the Lord he loves his family this is what I know I don’t have to read this off of nothing I know he loves the Lord I know he loves his family I know he loves helping others that’s what he loves to do I get a chance to work alongside him and some
Other phenomenal people at Mount Santa Cento college but Dr Lawson serves as the dean or of instruction for the people culture and public um service pathway because we’re in a pathway format these days and um his overall responsibility is basically to supervise all of those instructors um and I would
Imagine 40 plus people report into him but he’s think about if his 40 plus instructors that he’s leading plus Personnel think about how many students that is so when you talk about his influence his reach you know he’s a man of many talents many traits but when
Someone ask him what is his greatest achievement is being a father when his children were young four and two years old and the marriage concluded with their mother and now he has to raise these kids he chose to raise them as a single father he did this y’all and I’m
Excited that even now his his children are very much grown um families of Their Own own it’s amazing God has continued to open up doors for him he had enough time tonight to stop on by the be heill web show and give his give his account
His testimony of what the Lord has done for him can y’all welcome Dr Von Lawson over all the way did I mention he’s a Kappa man come on here no no was it you I know you don’t smoke the dope you don’t drink the wine good evening to you sister Perry
Thank you so much for having me and especially thank you for those kind words absolutely absolutely I I mean it from the bottom of my heart you are really you are really a A1 guy and I know that you go above and beyond thank you thank you and I know you look you’ll
Start singing and preaching in a heartbeat I know that know that so I’m G ask specific questions all right all right but nevertheless um Welcome to the Hill web show uh you’ve seen the theme you’ve seen the um the series for this for this particular month um what has
The Lord done for you you know it’s not just what the Lord has done for me it’s what the Lord continues to do for me every moment of every day every second uh it’s just consistent and I I want to start this dialogue with you if I can
Absolutely uh for a second with a just a quick uh story if if you will and and I don’t know how real it is but uh I I know it’s something that was told to me many many many many years ago people have probably heard it but there there came this great
Flood and um as the water was Rising people were beginning to evacuate and there was one man he was in this house and they said hey man we need to leave and he said well no I’m gonna wait on the Lord and then of course a wrath came
Along as the watch began to rise and say Hey Brother you need to get in this raft and he said n no I’m good I’m going wait on the Lord and so then of course the water begin to rise again he winds up on the second floor hanging out the window a
Boat comes along motorboat guy says say brother you need to get into this boat and he says no no I’m G wait on the Lord and so the water begins to rise again he winds up on top of the roof a helicopter comes along drops the drops
Down the ladder and says he man grab a hold of this ladder so we can get you out of there he said no no I’mma wait on the Lord now the water begins to rise again and he drowns and he winds up of course in heaven he’s there standing before
Judgment he asked the Lord he said how come you didn’t come save me I waited on you and he the Lord says to him say slam I sent you a raft a boat and a helicopter the reality is as I form my thoughts my words here that I want to sh
Share with you and hopefully somebody that’s listening we need to recognize when God sends us incredible things when God sends us everything that we need not necessarily what we want come on maybe this guy wanted something that was so elaborate that it just made a statement
But we need to recognize all of the things that God has sent us along the way that we needed he met every need and I have found throughout my life sister Perry that he keeps all of his promises all of them not one not two but all of them and
It’s not at my time because I can be impatient people that know me know some I can be impatient but God always arrives just when I need him just when I need him and for me that vulnerability um it speaks to Being Human and letting people know and
Understand that and so tonight as we as we as we talk I want to share with you some of the most incredible people in my life along the way that have been there because God knew that they needed me that I needed them at that time God met that need he
Put them right there at that spot uh at that time in my life and uh I think that’s essential to give people their roses while they can enjoy them let me ask you a question because I first of all I love I love that story um you know
It’s very comical but it it does bring us to place of having awareness um so have you always felt a sense of awareness of knowing when the help was coming for you or when you were being placed for such a time as this have you always had that or
Did you have to grow into that you know as a young person we don’t often see that but as a young adult I began to grow into it simply because I had great mentors around me okay um even coming up I had incredible parents I still have my
Parents thank God getting older I had incredible grandparents and these were people who instilling me values and and a sense of respect and and duty if you will especially the family and the community because I’ve been a serving all my life and that’s essential that’s
Important so I I give thanks to God for incredible parents parents of God uh even my my parents you know my dad uh was talking to him um a couple of weeks back and they at that age now uh whenever they talk they say things like
Oh you know when I’m gone now you know the farm will be there and you’ll have this house and and I told my dad the last time we talked I said please don’t give me anything and he looked at me and I said let me explain
Something to you Pops I call him I call him main man or I call him papa bear that’s his nickname okay I said main man you need to understand something as my father you’ve given me everything that they already needed right you gave me unconditional love you
Gave me discipline you gave me wisdom you raised me and most importantly you gave me Jesus Christ yes my dad didn’t play about that he Deacon in the church you was gonna be in church every Sunday pardon my grammar you was gonna be in church every Sunday was no sleeping on
The Pew or nothing like that you were going to be in church and so I told him you give me everything I can need you want to leave something leave it to your grandchildren leave it to your great grandchildren I’ve gotten everything that I could possibly need from me and
My mother and That’s essential that’s huge you know um to recognize like I’ve I’ve everything that I’ve needed you know um your parents have provided um you know definitely through the hand of God to make sure that you had what you needed are you the only
Child by chance oh no no it that’s that’s a different story I have a younger sister and I have siblings uh you as an extended family but uh they’re I I’m not the only one not even close oldest yeah yeah you’re the oldest huh I’m the
Oldest they look at me as the old man in the family now that’s for sure yeah okay okay awesome so tell us about um let’s take it by Let’s Do by decade I’m if you’re not too shy let folks know your current age H I am proud to be 63 years
Of age I thank God for every day every year every moment I have nothing to be ashamed of and and I get all the time people say you don’t look your age say I’m not supposed to first of all I don’t have any bad habits you know you know
Bad bad habits will make you look old so I don’t have any bad habits so I enjoy life I was telling a group of students the other night everything I need to get high is already inside me you know so my love for Christ and my love of of life
In and of itself and I want to I want to enjoy every moment of it that I can so when I wake up I’m trying to enjoy it when I’m going through the day I’m trying to enjoy it uh when I go to bed at night I I almost sometimes don’t want
To sleep because I I want to enjoy that so that life so uh yeah absolutely we have yeah well so that places your birth year in 1960 yes ma’am okay and your birth month oh October but I never tell people the day so don’t ask right I’m
Like so your birthday just passed and you didn’t let us tell you Happy Birthday pass I I really sit around and and make a hoopla about my birthday I am offended what I do on my birthday and I’ve done this for for decades I I normally take off I didn’t take off this
Year wasn’t able to because I needed to work uh but I normally take off and I will pray and meditate that day and what I do is I look back over everything that I’ve been able to do and accomplish I thank God for that but then I ask Lord
For guidance for what I need to continue to do please give me some some guidance moving forward and and so I thank the Lord that day that day is is not for me to celebrate me but for me to celebrate what God has has given me and given me
The opportunity uh to live to because not everybody gets to be 63 no no not by by by no stretch of imagination um just so you know This Means War because I’m going to find out if I to call Monica be like show me his calendar
When was he out in OCT I got to go ah and do my investigative yeah I know you an investigator I do know that so but okay let’s let’s break it down so let’s do uh when we’re talking about Look What the Lord Has Done yeah
What was the best decade of your life from 19th UH 60 to where we are now what would you say has been your best decade and why oh my God I’m going to say uh absolutely in the late SE 70s early 80s and and I’m going to choose that because
You know my family had had again raised me but I think one of the most the greatest accomplishments academically for me was attending a HBCU if people don’t know what that is it’s historically black college and university I am a proud graduate of Langston University and and you got to
Understand something I was not I was not the smartest student at all don’t let anybody fool you I could tell you stories about that you could look at the transcripts uh from from high school and college and know I wasn’t cheating off of anybody I mean those C’s D’s and yes
Some FS were totally honest so I wasn’t that guy that was supposed to go to a D1 school or go to some large you know uh University I went to little bitty Langston University where there were people who poured into me and I don’t want to get emotional so you know I can
Just say the love that they show show the caring that they showed the discipline that they showed and saying hey you would do what I tell you to do or else you know I mean because we had the kind of professors that would say boy I’ll slap the taste out your mouth
Don’t you talk back to me and you would say yes ma’am because that’s how we were raised so I give that shout out to the late uh Dr Ador CI Fisher Dr wesle Simpson the late Dr Simpson uh and I give that shout out to Dr Joan Clark and
Dr Ernest El Holloway who was my president uh to uh Dr Jones Dr Dr FW cook to brother Booker T Morgan all these people and so many more Dr Schultz and when I see these people going back to homecoming my heart just pounds because they’re so proud of us they’re
So proud of the work that we’ve accomplished and they they tell us every time they see us say we we’re proud of you still even this day those that are still living they’ll hug us and and tell us that and so I get to pass that along
And that’s the thing that comrad with that family so for me that was one of the most incredible credible decades because it established who I was you’d be used to be surprised that I’m actually an introvert who has to act out as an extrovert that’s right true story
Langston made me get up and learn how to speak okay well so we can blame them blame for the way I act blame them blame the cappers for the way I act yes ma’am no okay so this is first of all this is awesome um and I’m not going to Feast on
Trying to figure out your birthday but um I will just say that I think it’s one of the things you mentioned how you just you know you reflect and thank God for what he has done for you um and then also asking for wisdom and inquiring of
God what is coming up for me what do you want me to do next and you mentioned for your greatest decade was your years at Langston um and I’ve heard you speak um about uh L Langston University my sisters U Natasha Ry she is a lsten Alum
And she was just at homecoming uh different ones that some other sours that I’ve met along the way in my journey and they are proud um L graduates so that was one of your greatest what would be one of your most challenging decades in why and remind
You this is the power of vulnerability so if you I know you say you don’t want to be emotional but feel free I I think you’re welcome here emotions are yeah one of my most challenging um understand that um I’m and I’m proud to say this
I’m an Oklahoma boy born and bred and if You’ have told me 10 years ago that um that I would be in uh California living here I would have told you you were on drugs I’d have said something was wrong with you and that you were on narcotics
Because there was no way I would ever leave that Red State or that red Earth uh despite some of their their way ways there whether it be conservative or challenging sometimes to live there it’s still home uh but I think one of the most challenging things was getting up
And leaving something I had known all my life uh to come out to uh the great state of California I’m happy to be here and and then I think and I have to say this um because I didn’t know what to expect I didn’t know anybody I had a a a cousin
That I hadn’t hadn’t talked to in years that lived in Long Beach and that didn’t didn’t didn’t uh really we really didn’t interact we we’ve grown Closer Closer since then but we hadn’t seen each other in so long you know it wasn’t like I I
Hung out with them and um uh the first thing you know my parents I go being who they are you know my dad my daddy said now you going out to California you know those folks kind of fast you know they don’t know nothing about the Lord so you
Got the son my daddy he’s deacon now he said the first thing you have to do uh you have to find you a church boy and I never forget I arrived uh in July the 18th I was supposed to go to work on the 23rd got here on the 18th on a Thursday
Call home said I let you guys let you guys know I made it the first thing my daddy said well have you found a church yet I said dad even unpacked right uh and then I Googled churches the true story and uh the when I was living in
Costa Mesa and I I tell people uh that Google uh led me to a Friendship Baptist Church oh yeah I no friendship I have to give them a shout out and I have to give a shout out for an in incredible pastor and Reverend Kenneth Curry yeah the
First lady Curry because they have been so uh inspirational in my life but then beyond even that was the the camaraderie that happened as part of being there I was led there and I have my little spot you know little Pew that I sit on and I
Met one of the most incredible Godly men uh when I got the Friendship who took me under his wing and he’s one of the most humble men that I’ve ever met in my life but he’s so accomplished and I got to give him a shout out uh if I embarrass
Him you know it’s just one of those things I call him my big brother and this is what God has done uh his name is James Johnson okay brother James Johnson was the first person that just grabbed me up and he said hey man I don’t want you sitting around the house
By yourself and he would take me to Clippers game have me sitting down there behind the behind the players and that kind of caring on because I mean he like he’s accomplished brother yeah and um he is the reason that I have my home here in California he uh he insisted that it
Was time for me to buy and he assisted me in that process through the entire thing and had people that he knew that he was able to pick up the phone and call and just simply say help this brother out I need you to help him get
Established here I love that he um he’s is he has been that kind of brother to give me wise counsel since I’ve been here that’s what I talk about when I say God putting people in the right place to meet your need at the right time always
And he can not see me for oh I don’t know six seven days m I’mma get a call I’mma get a call and it’s gonna be bro I’m checking on you man how you doing and uh it’s just good to hear his voice and um and to to have that kind of that
Kind of support you know um when when you mentioning that um in my mind goes to of course I always think about the story of Joseph um but I also think about the story of Esther um because of course you know she was orphan girl and being raised by
Uncle morai who’s like 60 years older than her and you know but for such a time as this for her to be become Queen and to help and save her people and when you’re saying that you never even imagine yourself being never in California never you know um and then
For you to get here and find and Friendship Baptist pastor Curry he preached machine oh preaching and teaching preaching and teaching listen um I I’m very familiar with Friendship Baptist and um so many such good such good Fellowship there but for you to be drawn there and then to grow I mean it’s
Just like you can see how intentional God has been yes throughout your life yes and I just that I don’t know I just I just had to pause for a cause on that because I’m like I think sometimes we’re so caught up in what isn’t that we forget to see what is yes
That’s right right you know we forget to see who is you know what I mean so all right so it was it was your challenging decade but you’re here now you got Roots here you’re growing you’re thriving yeah uh what what are you hoping for in this
Because you are officially in a new decade yeah yeah these past three years you’re still in the you’re still in the early years of a new decade brand new what do you want the six your 60s to be for you whatever God tells me and and
You know here’s the thing that I the same thing I say about if you told me I’d been in in California the same thing if you had told me 30 years ago that that’d be higher education again I’d have told you probably were crazy I had
Plan to be in public service all my life I wanted to be uh in some aspect of public service or politics that kind of thing and and wound up back wound up in higher education after I had been in public service and when I realized that
I was able to um I don’t want to use the word influence but Mentor young lives you know to help young people to realize their goals and their dreams the same way people had done for me yes when I was at Langston to pass that forward if
You will uh was so powerful and so I always tell people because I’ve had people ask me hey you think about retiring if I’m no longer relevant then it’s time to retire if I can talk to a young person and they’re not listening to me time to retire but as long as I
Can help motivate somebody and make a difference my grandmother always had this saying if I could just touch somebody along the way then my living will not have been in vain so if I can just touch somebody continue to touch continue to touch then I’ll continue to
Do this if if I can’t touch anyone anymore then it’s time for me to go somewhere and sit down and I’m not going to be the person that’s going to keep being a prize fighter after after my days are over you know if if if if if
I’m done if I get knocked out I I’ll be done and let let one of these young Lions take it but if I have the opportunity to continue to touch young lies to to mold young people and help them realize their dreams then then I’m going to continue to do that till God
Says go to go somewhere sit down boy you know that’s good you know van um it shows a lot about your character I think a lot of people talk a lot you know and especially you know us working in higher education people can pontificate they they behinds off yeah but not all are
Putting their mouth in their their walk where their talk has been right you know and so it’s a blessing to see um cuz I I’ll just give you your flowers right now um because why not we’re here um thank you for believing when you first
Met me now you have to understand I I didn’t know nobody coming to mount Santa Cento college right nobody and within the matter of I would say the first six months I end up presenting in front of the executive board I end up meeting and having fellowship with you Marilyn and
Joyce next thing I know I’m in C black San Kofa you MOA eug like I’m just here right then you’re like oh sister Perry gonna host she gonna do this and if I can ever know that someone can recommend me if I ever needed like if they always
Do that game if you needed to call somebody right now and they pick up who would it be like I’m grateful that I have people with their question was like if you need somebody to to write you a letter of recommendation you need somebody to speak well of you right now
Who could you call right it’s awesome to know that I have that you know in you but not only that abely you know when it came down to be healed and I’m talk talking to you all about um the conference and you know different things all of you rallied and said let’s
Participate let’s let’s do this and for you um and Dr um Harvey Dr Maryland um and for Joyce I mean just it’s it’s so huge absolutely I want to say thank you for keeping your word for keeping your promise because a lot of people say a
Lot of things but when it comes to the rubber me and the road yeah um it means a lot and so it speaks to your character it speaks to your really it’s a testament of your faith in God thank you thank you yeah I tell people um I’m I’m
Not a rich SP not a good-looking man so all I got is my word and my word has to be gold and where I’m from you give your word is supposed to mean something yeah so I haven’t done anything other than serve and and and do what I’m supposed
To do is keep my word so I I and if if I get off track from that I expect for you to tell me because I guarantee you my mama would tell me you know if I’m not doing right she would tell me so AB I
Mean that’s that’s what builds a bond of Sisterhood and Brotherhood together you know even though you Kappa oh yeah divine nine always always but okay so um let’s talk about your children because in your resume your CV that is listed as your greatest achievement yeah
Tell us about how that time was for you of making the decision to raise them as a single father that was deep and there wasn’t a decision it was a calling it’s something that had to happen I would have liked to have anything else but that but uh
Things happen uh things happen to people and and uh you have to you have to step up and so yes we were the Three Musketeers from the time they were 4 and two they were my babies and they would sit under me uh we spent a lot of time
At church we spent a lot of time at community activities uh again I thank God for my my mom and my dad at that time and I thank God for my extended family at that time because even at my church this is this goes again this is
Where you have to listen to people being put in your life by God you know I would sit there on the bench with them and I wanted them to be I wanted them to be as disciplined as I was when my dad you know had us in church set up tall you
Know my grandparents sit up straight you know that kind of thing and I remember my mother Dean got rest the soul she would sit behind me on the Pew every Sunday and she had to be she had had to be pushing 80 I would say y’all stop
Stop all that jumping around now stop and mother Dean would lean up there and say baby now you a good father she said but let them kids be kids now they only get be young one time now these days somebody turn around and say mind your
Business old lady I’m no you don’t tell me what to do but what I what did I say I said yes ma’am Mama Dean you’re right you right because she was assuring me that I was doing what I was supposed to do by being a father but she was also
Letting me know that you got to let children be children and and like I said my kids I wanted to um make sure that they always had what they needed so uh I always believed in having used cars uh I I I I shopped at out of a few thrift
Stores back in that time you know before before I could actually afford a suit or two um but I made sure that they had private school education that was important because one thing I’ll tell our parents I’ll tell our community period if our children can’t read they can’t succeed that’s the most important
Element of success for our children if you can’t read you can’t comprehend if you can’t read you can’t learn if you can’t read you can’t do anything and that’s one of the biggest problems fac in our community our children can’t read they don’t read they won’t read right so
I wanted to assure if nothing else and it was a private church school I wanted to make sure that they were grounded in the Lord I wanted to make sure that they had a good education so from the time they were in kindergarten up to sixth grade they were in private school the
Other thing that we were big on and I encourage parents to do this because all it is is a tank of gas expose your children to anything that you can expose them to we traveled we traveled across this country we had an old uh GMC Suburban that’s back when the GMC’s were
Suburbans instead of UK 1991 Yukon and a big old Square uh Suburban you know and uh we traveled to the tip to the bottom of Florida uh down down to the down to the tip of Florida Miami uh uh pompo Beach and Fort Lauderdale and driving up to Disney and
Watching them scream when they saw those ears when they woke up uh all the way up to New England you know up into to yeah to New Hampshire and and Connecticut and Maine and Massachusetts in Washington DC uh all the way out to California all the
Way uh uh up into the northern part of the country Midwest and all points in between plus when they were young I made sure they had passports you important that that I had it was important that they also had the opportunity to to travel to other countries and see what
The world had to offer yeah I encourage that uh with with uh children that that they be allowed to to explore and discover discover things especially with their parents that’s the most important thing they never forget that they never forget those times that you spend together you know listen fine listen
This is a great interview um van when you’re saying that that is so huge because I have encountered grown adults that never had a passport yeah never have left California outside of going to Vegas yeah but haven’t been on planes yeah never been I mean and I’m
Like that’s that’s that’s sad and I I uh I had the same sim similar situation uh when I worked at Langston I did for a number of years and I was a director of overbound and we had students that had never been out of their County in
Oklahoma and I took them as part of the work that we did every year I had I had been able to sell the leadership on allowing us to take them on trips outside of the state and along the way the trip had to involve education it had
To involve fun okay and then it had to involve rest and relaxation right okay so the first thing we would do is I didn’t do Motel 6 no I didn’t do holiday in I did Hiltons I did Marriotts I did peach tree down in down in Atlanta GE
Right and the amazing thing to see children evolved but we had taken them one year to um uh Memphis Tennessee to uh Le Mo yeah line Motel Lorraine Motel we took to the Silver Rights Museum to see black kids come out of that museum crying I mean balling why did they treat
Dr King like that they needed to see that I took him to lamon Owens college so they could see lamon Owens in men Memphis I took them down to the Mississippi River went down Bill Street so they could see BB King’s club and eat some of that chicken down there in
Memphis uh one year took him down to Atlanta Georgia walk into the lobby uh the peach tree and we meet the marott we meet Tupac Shakur what meet Tupac right there he and I I’m in I’m in lecturing him they said you can’t lecture Tupac I
Said yes I can because I told him I said young brother I love your music you got to stay out of trouble so you can continue to preach your word I told him that just like that and he was like he said yes sir had an Entourage of people
Around him you know um and the kids had so much fun uh doing that one year took them down to San Antonio another year I took him down actually to Warz Mexico and this before they you needed a pass right before the cartel was yeah we stayed we actually stayed right there in
El Paso in the Camino Real we were six from the uh from the border we took a bus down to the board and I told him going over the board I said look you got federales down here so if you can’t act right they will keep you here and they
Thought I was joking until they saw somebody down there that lived there try to shoplift and the cops came down so hard the kids told me said oh no we’ll act right they they knew the cops down there a look different from the ones up
Here yeah man you know um that just I mean that brings so much and I and I hope more parents are able to do that you know because especially plan it planning planning is a big thing and I know you know finances are always a struggle um and I know that often times
The fear of the unknown keeps us from moving forward now remember remember what you heard me say one of the thing I told you I had to use cars all the time I was raising my kids yeah because I wanted to pay cash or I wanted to be
Done with it so that they could enjoy that and sometimes we have to change our priorities and our mindset what’s important to us versus something what what we need versus what we want I would have loved I would have loved to drive a certain kind of vehicle 30 years ago but
That wasn’t in the cards cuz I wasn’t living by Perry money I had loss of money and loss of money was short money I was like Tyra Perry money got it Camille Perry money I didn’t have Camille Perry money I had LW money losson money short money so the the idea
Always was making sure that the kids were exposed to what they needed music lessons uh dance lessons acting whatever they wanted to do baseball t-ball uh and they they all were able to do what it is that they needed to do so do you feel that in your sacrifice and laboro love
For your children do you ever look back and say man I wish I would have invested some more time in me no because there’s always always going to be time for me you know because whatever God’s gonna give me is GNA give me if he takes me tomorrow I’m still the
Happiest guy in the entire world I mean I have lived a great life um and I always would because I did have great parents I always tell people I would take two vacations a year one I took with the kids and then one I took because I needed to rejuvenate so I
Would always get a chance to if it was nothing but drive down to Dallas and check into a hotel and just lay by the pool for a couple days my parents would say yeah we got you we support you 100% And The the CH the the my extended
Family in my church would do the same thing you know Deacon craft the late Deacon craft and his wife Deacon’s craft they were quick to take my kids and say hey they can stay with us for the weekend you know just beautiful people yeah that’s good
Well you know van as we’re preparing to wrap up in a little bit um one of the questions that I have for you because I just you know everything that you’re saying I just see what the Lord has done for you yeah um so many people would have had a different
Perspective um regarding now being having to raise a family on your own um the having to sacrifice and make the changes and then um learning how to operate in a place of singleness when you thought was going to be for better for worse sickness and Hell forever right
Um and then to see where you can look back and you can see how many people God placed in your life for your village for your community yeah that your children were insulated and and you were insulated and not feeling like you were isolated on an island all by yourself
Absolutely um to now you’re I would like to say that that scripture comes to my mind that your latter will be greater than your former yes um I really believe that’s for your life that you know you are walking in the season U the best season of your life and you haven’t seen
Nothing yet type thing you know well I claim that thank you sis I God’s will thank you greater greater is coming you know we just you know listen he gave me it’s going to be bigger and I believe that whatever our hope our ideas they they
Don’t compare yeah what he has for us absolutely um that’s an awesome thing um you mentioned about always wanting to be relevant and making sure that you can impart some wisdom some truths into those that are younger than you uh and I know you mentioned brother James Johnson being one who imparts to
You yeah what what what would be your summation of what you currently see with the those that are in the younger Generations after you and what would be a word of encouragement that you can share to maybe that mother that father or um even that student that might be
Watching tonight and saying like hey I feel like I’m at my Wit’s End okay I’m going to say this statement but then I want to qualify it okay I tell students I want you to be able to learn so you can earn and that’s not educational wise
Okay I say learn so that you can earn I want you to be coachable right and so many young people these days and and it’s okay it’s a sign of the times they’re in their feelings I I I didn’t even understand what feelings were when I came out here was like
Feelings what what what is that you know because if you can’t be coached you can’t move to Greatness so you have these incredible mentors who will say I can show you how to get where you need to be okay if you’re not willing to be coached then you can’t get there or you
Miss the opportunity to get there when you need to so you have to be open to tell me I want to learn in the case of of my my mentor and big brother brother Johnson I had to be coachable I had to be open to what it is that he needed to
Say to me no matter how hard are are are or distasteful it might be but he had to tell me the truth this is what you need to do and I had to listen listen to that do you understand same thing when I talk to young people I can show you exactly
How to get where I am are you ready for that are you ready for that sacrifice are you ready for the hard work that that involves are you ready for the fact that you gonna hear some things that things are going to happen that you might find distasteful but we’re so
Quick to want to fight stuff sometimes when when we got to say you know what that’s not even important let me focus on where it is I’m trying to go right because every time you got to stop to act a fool with somebody actually stopping your progress I tell people all
The time love haters because that means I’m doing something right I don’t have time to hate somebody else because it takes too much energy from you so while you hating me I’m moving forward I don’t have any time for that you know God is using me for something great so um the
Reality is if I had to leave that that W that W that word of wisdom for young people you have to be able to learn so that you can earn that means you have to be coachable you have to be someone that can actually listen and follow instructions that’s
Good that’s so good because um what one of the things that I had thought about when I was listening to you is how teachable you’ve been yeah throughout through all of it even as mother Dean was trying to help you to understand let these kids be kids yeah you know and I
Think that is something that um we of didn’t miss yes you know we miss the wisdom um I I keep older people in my life because I love me some older folks because I know I I know I don’t know everything yeah you know and I know that
I need the wisdom and I love there’s you know that passage I think it’s in either first Peter or it’s in maybe it’s in Titus but have the older women teach the younger women you know for so they can be wise right I got to give this quick
Shout out if you don’t mind got you um there’s a group um the fellas you can call them the fellas you can call them the barop crew you can call them whatever you want you know my new favorite friends oh look led by uh another good brother who has has
Basically just taken me under his wing uh from the from the Motor City he from Detroit uh brother brother Marin Brown and um uh he uh along with a couple of these other brothers uh invited me to fellowship with them um weekly and uh and it it started out just
Them looking out after each other during coid it has grown into an opportunity uh for men to share wisdom and share knowledge and what theyve shared with me because they’re older than I am they’re even more seasoned than me and when I sit down and listen
To brothers who are their 70s who are in their 80s and yes in their 90s tell me how they’ve overcome my heart is like filled with with with joy I mean like they this group was put there God put them there what what right
There is I need of them and they got no idea how much they’ve influenced me and how much they’ve done for me in terms of the fellowship you know so yeah you you talking about that that those Elders who come to you and say look here son and
They check on me too it’s weird because brother Brown will call me quick yeah I missed you in church a Sunday brother and like I said he’s cool he’s from Detroit so he Motor City cool right Motor City cool and um go they just don’t know that God put them there yeah
They might think that they just doing something nice for old knucklehead like me but God put them there to to to to bring me in you know I I love that vine because you know I you you introduce me to them okay you know that’s that’s one of the things
I think people miss out and understand when you have a real Mentor when you have a real friend they have no problem with bringing you in spaces and places yeah because they know that there’s enough Universe there’s enough uh Sky I would like to say for all the stars to
Shine yeah so I I have yet to see a consolation fight another consolation say no this is my turn today absolutely you know and so because and you know we know the scripture says and God makes everything beautiful in its time right to see how you you know you brought me
Into that group um for me to just give a shout out and talk to them for them to get on the show for us to make that connection right and to hear and to see I mean you have you have Olympians on that line you have business mogal you have educational
Executives like you have businessmen you know gentlemen who have run their own business have been in the vocational trades all their lives and are are you know whether whether they be journeyman or whether they be experts in their field uh scientists I mean it’s just across the board these men represent the
Spectrum of what what black men can accomplish and what they have accomplished in some very different times you know what I mean it’s one thing for me to say I was born in the 60 60s it’s a totally different thing to say you came up in the 60s right right
You understand what I’m saying uh and in the of turbulence and that kind of thing in the 50s and 60s so these men bring just an entirely different perspective a beautiful perspective to help me understand our history absolutely absolutely well I am immensely grateful for you stopping by the beill web show
On tonight thank you for letting us peer in um what am I taking away from this well I know you’re October born um you know almost makes me feel V I have to say this as your little sister that maybe I don’t know you okay you wait till we get on National
Television okay so tell for me to find out that I don’t even know when your birthday is so I’m going to say Happy Belated Birthday to you because you definitely let me know it’s October you said that you were shy about your day look I will
I will call Monica I’m I’mma get on this I’mma find it um if you see Edible Arrangement on your desk just know that I’ve solved the mystery um and you’re gonna have to pay me to be quiet all right I will pay you I will pay you I’m
Classified okay so you know things are a little tough around I will pay you sis but um but you know again having a teachable spirit having being able to be coached you know I and when you said that it really just made me think about the stuff that we see currently in the
Sporting world yeah you know when people don’t know how to be coachable you know it’ll destroy a team yeah you know and so whoever ever is watching on tonight um put a put away your pride put away uh your ego and and be coachable be teachable be reachable
As Dr Lawson has told us be willing to learn so you can earn and it might not always relate to money you might maybe you’re earning respect maybe you’ll earn you know the next section of your life might go go with ease or maybe you’ll earn the the the the prestige whatever
It might be but be open and my dad always said this Vine because you know he from Oklahoma too he from Oak mug good man good man yeah he he really is love my dad but he always says when it comes down to you know you take what’s good and throw away
Was bad right you know and so I think it’s very important for us to be mindful that every word that comes to us might not be for us to hold on to right but have that discernment to know God is this what you want me to do right so
Thank you for being vulnerable with me on tonight thank you for sharing with us all what the Lord has done for you and is still doing thank you so I appreciate you thank you so much in um to my friends and family and uh wishers well wishers and those who are watching for
