Bless the love royal family give thanks for life this is the African Liberation Network I’m the host honorable Prophet Daniel and I’m here this evening with the honorable brother President John Hargrove of the universal negro Improvement Association in Atlanta um yes and we’re here for another episode of the Marcus Garvey
Garite lessons and principles of the unia and tonight’s topic is the aims and objectives of the unia which will give us a good insight into what it is that Marcus Garvey set out to do with his organization and with his people so at this time I turn it over to the
Honorable president to give us a rundown of you know the aims and objectives of the universal negro Improvement Association blessed love brother John greetings greetings uh thank you Prophet Daniel and greetings to uh the network um tonight’s topic as you said uh is he aims and objects of the universal negro Improvement
Association um very important topic uh this is actually when we when we first discussed uh having this program um this was one of the potential first topics that we were going to discuss was the aims and objects of the of universal negro Improvement Association however
When you look at the text of the right excellent Marcus mosiah Garvey message to the people course of African philosophy uh aims and objects of the universal negro Improvement Association are reserved for lesson three um first two lessons as we discussed previously number one uh is titled intelligence education Universal
Knowledge and how to get it uh but it basically focuses on the study of history specifically the history of man second lesson title leadership uh focuses on the characteristics of leadership uh and reminds us to always keep ourselves a step ahead uh intellectually uh if we want to be in
The realm of those we consider leaders uh of our community and in the third lesson he touches on the aims and objects of the universal negro Improvement Association and we should understand that uh if anyone that’s aware of uh organization black organization black nationalist organizations um Nation of Islam they
Have um what they want uh on the back of their Muhammad speaks newspaper or Final Call newp newspaper now um the Black Panther Party has their 10-point program um um but but uh any legitimate organization uh has what you would consider a a a 10-point program a a aims
And objects whatever it may be and these outline the fundamental principles uh that the organization stands for um so this is the reasoning as to why uh the right excellent Marcus M Marcus mosiah Garvey felt the need uh to create the universal negro Improvement Association and the solutions that the universal negro
Improvement Association would provide uh without any further Ado uh we’ll go through the original 11 aims and objects of the unia and I’ll uh point out the uh as of recently there’s one that’s been removed and I’ll point that out as we get to it uh the first aim of the
Universal negro Association is to build a universal confraternity amongst our race um and the word confraternity is synonymous with um Brotherhood um it’s a like the word fraternity is sorority but it’s um uh it includes both genders so it is a uh Garvey talks about the unia as the
Fraternal side of the organization that’s where we make our Oaths our bonds our familial uh relationships and familial ties is in the unia and in the ACL is our business uh ties and business relationship but we all know well many of us as that are followers of Garvey
Know uh one of his famous quotes was um the greatest weapon used against the Negro is disorganization so the first aim when you think about the first aim that’s what you should think about is um Harvey’s um uh acknowledgment that um the very first fundamental thing that we
Have to do is organize our people bring our people together um and and uh and uh have all of our people underneath uh this one Banner that Marcus gar created that we know of as the red black and green flag so um that’s the first aim yeah give thanks that’s pretty clear
And to the point okay well uh second aim is well as it says to prompt the spirit of Pride and love but it basically means to promote the spirit of Pride and love um when Garvey expounds on that uh he basically says that um we should understand that
God made us perfect um and and one of garvey’s most famous uh speeches he talks about um the image of God and he says that um if if we’re black and we’re created in the image of God then God must in some sense uh be black so uh
Garvey teaches us that our features um the our African features uh dark melanin uh wide nose um full lips um our kinky hair um these are things that God didn’t do on accident um and we must Embrace uh and and begin to see these features as features of beauty um gar you know
There’s only so many um ideals or or or uh ways of thinking and perspectives uh afro Center African centered European centered or um Asian uh Eastern centered um and we as African people must uh Divine def Define our standards of beauty based upon uh those that look like us um so if
We if uh if we begin to adopt other people’s standards of beauty we will see them as beautiful and we will see ourselves uh as ugly but Garvey teaches us uh number two U straight up front go God made us perfect uh he didn’t make us
This Way by mistake he didn’t make uh different colors uh by mistake if God wanted he could have made us all the same race of the same color um so the fact that uh we are you know as the human race uh and even as an African race um distinct from others um
Uh physiologically that’s something that we have to embrace and we have to have pride and love love for yes I am you know it’s really important for us the the the reason why that’s a really important thing is because of the transatlantic slave trade and and the plantation and every you know the
Self-hate that was taught to us and forced upon us you know in that period so you know because normally you wouldn’t have to reiterate or really make people really see Beauty in themselves but you know after we have been taught that Jesus and God is white
And that you know great hair and small nose and all of that stuff is actually what’s beautiful then that’s why Marvey came with this as a part of his program to reverse and undo the white supremacy teaching yeah yes sir and and one of the things that uh Garvey mentioned in his
Time which is still fairly prevalent today is the skin bleaching uh and to my knowledge I haven’t been on the continent but to my knowledge that’s still something that’s very much uh issue uh on the continent is is skin bleaching so um all of these things uh
Where we try to alter our appearance to match someone else’s standards of beauty uh we believe um is something that we should not practice um we should love ourselves as as God made us uh our kinky hair our afro um whatever it may be um as long as we’re clean um and we’re
Healthy um that should be the standard of beauty not necessarily as you said straighter hair or or fairer complected skin yes sir uh okay so the third aim let me see oh man always mess up on these assist medy so I’mma go in the third and fourth
I’m going just say them together the third and fourth assist the needy and reclaim the Fallen I believe the Third is reclaim Fallen but uh let’s let’s start with reclaim the Fallen for us reclaim the Fallen um and and and both of those are fairly synonymous they are charitable Endeavors
Of the unia um so those in need U reclaim the Fallen comes down to for us division 421 we Define it as uh homelessness uh mental disability or mental um issues um um imprisonment um those you know brothers that that um are incarcerated um victims of the maafa as
President Ross Marvin teaches uh so um you know that post-traumatic slavery syndrome that we still deal with um sexual confusion homosexuality uh drug addiction uh any of these things um that take our people’s minds and and uh Focus uh away from our Collective struggle uh would be a way of of
Reclaiming them and then assist the needy very similar charitable um so when you think about those uh in need homeless individuals uh feeding programs um youth um programs um clothing drives uh those type of things uh are are ways in which we assist the needy and Garvey says that
One of our highest Endeavors should be to assist uh the the needy members of our race and and he also prefaces he says that we have to make sure that they are genuinely serious um in in regards to their need a lot of our people uh today and in garvey’s time um would
Profess a need but uh in reality they wouldn’t you know their situation wouldn’t uh require as much need as as as they profess so uh reclaim the fallen and assist the needy charitable uh Endeavors of the unia so one organize our people uh globally number two have a
Sense of pride in who we are and who and what God made us uh three and four charitable um help uh those uh of our race that are in need um that’s that’s how three and four kind of lays out number five and number five is actually
The one that was removed uh the way it was originally written uh and and we did have an issue with the way it was originally written it says that um um it the unia has a aim to civilize the backwards tribes of Africa um and as we read that
Collectively uh in around 2020 you know uh amongst the divisions throughout the nation um that was one of the things that kind of stood out for everybody it’s like hold on wait a minute who are we um to call Africa uh African Traditions backwards or quote unquote uncivilized who are we you know
Now that we’ve gone through uh 400 years of of slavery and and uh indoctrination of Europeans who are we to to say who is and who isn’t civilized um so uh we we had to look at ourselves uh and we came to the decision that um it shouldn’t be
Well the way I understood it was it shouldn’t be worded that way I thought my understanding was we would change it to civilize the uh C help civilize the tribes of Africa or help the tribes of Africa but at the end of the day they took it out completely um so Um any questions or comments on that number five and one sorry one second one of the way Garvy says it uh in philosophies and opinions he talks about it he says um we at one day we will have to as as Africans throughout the diaspora will have to recognize and respect our Vine
And fig tree so the place in which we came from um and that uh we believe is Africa um and he also said that um our goal when we say one God one aim one destiny that one aim and this is a hidden thing that not a lot of people
Know but that one aim uh relates to building a Sovereign Nation on the continent of Africa so Garvey felt that the natural home the natural base of operations for us as as a people um had to be Africa and it couldn’t really be it didn’t make any sense for it to be
Any other any other place for us to try to have it in India or America or uh South America or Europe um or Australia it just didn’t make sense so uh that’s what aim number five uh speak speaks to um if I may for one second um when I
Read that first the first time I read that number five um I definitely you know I didn’t like it I didn’t like to hear him say that but we have to understand that Marcus Garvey was a Catholic Christian yeah and um so his mindset of course you know is is saying you
Know it was from a Christian perspective now that’s one part of it but then also I would also like to say that it’s not every every African tradition that that I think should continue some of these things need to be examined and reexamined you know what I mean because just because something’s
Been done for thousands of years doesn’t necessarily mean it makes sense and that we should continue to do it so it’s like yeah there there needs to be respect on both sides and we just need to look examine ourselves uh looking at each other as a reflection of each other and
Be honest and say and and really say okay these things we can leave behind us these things we can advance with and just you know go through with a better understanding of ourselves and of our tradition some things maybe it could be like you know like how they have like um
Say like exhibit exhibitions where people will like dress up like how they used to and do the things to like you know show people the old traditions but we don’t necessarily have to keep doing that like that’s our way of life um just because it’s ancient because not
Every ancient practice is necessarily a good practice like some people some people like to glorify things just because they’re old or because it’s coming from a old book or something like that but not everything in these books not everything that people do is really worth continuing yes have to be open
Open and honest go through brother yeah it’s it’s it’s a very delicate balance um that that’s one thing I’ll say is it’s a very delicate balance because um yeah like you said I mean not not everything um needs to stay um but yeah it’s just it’s just a delicate
Balance and we have to make sure everybody’s at the table uh when we make that discussion or have that discussion make that decision um the the key thing for us um we understand the principle of Africa is is our motherland you know that’s in the slogan Africa of the
Africans those at home and those abroad so we can’t forget about um Africa at the end of the day uh the the main issue was how it was being how the uh aim was being laid out you know but um I definitely understand what you’re saying
Um yeah you know gar Garvey yeah like you said Garvey was was a Catholic but at the same time we got to be careful with that because that that’s the same mentality that you know colonialism uh was successful with you know coming in with as they
Said you know they come in they give you a Bible you pray uh then when you you put your hand up you know they got the land you got your book you know but that was Christian colonialism um but I just yeah for us it’s just about having
Everybody at the table uh understanding what is what’s best for us to keep and what’s best to rid of yeah it’s our decision to make in our own spectacles not by somebody else’s um you know standard what we agree on yes yes you know yeah we should all be
Excited uh to achieve that we still got work to do uh the next aim number six number six is to it’s been Rewritten um but in in a sense it is to Um it says to work for the independent negro nations in every Community um is is how it’s written in in um message to the people but it basically means wherever uh there is a significant number of our people uh we should be working with together with that
Community and our nation um so for us and my time um since there are so many organizations and quote unquote Nations that is our objective to work Beyond quote unquote on the other side of the aisle um so uh a melanated or African group that has a
Different belief uh like the Nation of Islam like the mois Science Temple we would consider them a different Nation but aim number six um uh promote for us to work with those Nations and Garvey says it in the text he says the goal is not for us to have one um great racial
Nation is for us to have a great racial Empire um and that Empire consist of all uh nations of our race so that’s what aim number six is about is um you know understanding that our race our blood the red at the top of the red black and
Green flag um it goes beyond National national uh and religious boundaries you know so whether you’re you know Niger or or Ghana you know whether you’re a Christian or Muslim um our as a race we should be under the same Empire so that’s what number six is about Unity without
Uniformity yes sir yes sir yeah but yeah our our blood it is our Essence our descendancy that uh unites us you know not our individual titles not you know you know you know where the the boat dropped us off or where our people traveled to and we were born there not
What language we speak um but it’s in essence who we who we are you know and and where we come from that’s what unites us so that’s that’s a overview of aim number six questions comments before I go to number seven no I would just say
You know the red black and green Banner you know is is for all black people you know so that just that in itself speaks volumes that it doesn’t matter what your religion your skin color necessarily any anything that you could use to be divided you should ignore all of that
And say I’m black I’m African and Unite based on that alone yes sir yes sir that’s you know that’s it right there so um the next aim is number seven um this is our protective this is our protective uh directive um number seven relates to uh ambassadors and quote unquote
Representatives uh in the communities and or nations where our people are so um the the purpose of that is to U at the end of the day have representation to make sure I think as Garvey says it is to make sure that no one is taken advantage of you know so
Even if you live in a community where there’s a hundred Africans there should be someone that can represent those 100 Africans someone that can speak on behalf of those 100 Africans um and that’s what number seven is about is to to create uh these ambassadors as Garvey
Said it U but those that um and and to establish the right to have ambassadors that’s something that we kind of take for granted uh nowadays is is the ability to speak for ourselves but um that’s something that you actually had to stand on uh in garvey’s time it’s
It’s you had to make that was part of the Declaration is you know um we don’t appreciate we yeah we don’t value how others are providing service for us we want to provide service for ourselves um and that’s what this is about is we want to represent ourselves we want to speak
For ourselves so uh number seven is about uh yeah um as I said any Community or or group or Nation where there is a group of uh Africans located um we feel that that group should have the representation of the universal negro Improvement Association uh and they
Should be organized and be a part of and working with um so they should have the ability to speak to uh the leadership of the universal negro Improvement Association if and if they say hey we need you know there was an earthquake and we need you know um you know diapers
And and and water and all of this stuff they should be able to have that network uh to to communicate those those needs if there’s a um you know political crisis or a a upcoming you know threat to uh political stability those are things that should be able to be
Discussed well I don’t really have too many questions about that I would just like to emphasize you know that that’s really um a real lofty ideal you know and and it’s something that’s is feasible I would love for us to have that kind of representation internationally you know
Yeah because often times the people that they put to speak for us if they’re black they’re not really qualified and if they’re not black we already know they’re not gonna do it you know they’re not going to do us any justice yes um I mean Garvey had a lesson in philosophy and opinions
Entitled Traders but in that lesson he he spoke specifically on uh our leadership and how our leadership uh has failed us but the UN ni as we’ve talked about and as I will comp continue to emphasize the the the the the from what I understand after five years of being involved with
The organization after over two years of serving as as president over a year of being a a district commissioner the the fundamental emphasis of the UN is to develop and and increase the political awareness um and political education of our people uh on the individual level and on the
Collective level but it’s about um uh knowing how to hold individuals accountable but at the end of the day at the highest level knowing how to hold that office uh and knowing the responsibilities uh of that office so um you know as a people this this this name number seven
Is is pretty much held by the presidents of Divisions um and it’s up to the people to know how to hold that President accountable know how to um request you know receipts as they say uh reports you know have you spoken to these people about this you know have
Have they said anything you know in regards to this month or the upcoming month um but we have to know how to hold individuals accountable uh including uh the individual ual that look like us so that’s part of you know that’s one of the underground um uh uh uh principles of
The unia um that people don’t necessarily emphasize very much but but that’s really what garveyism is about is is knowing you know one who’s uh speaking for you and two you know how to develop yourself to speak for yourself and to speak for others yeah it’s a it’s a good
Um it’s I would say to be able to pass like to be in an organization such as the unia and to reach the level where you can speak on behalf of said organization means that you have you’ve qualified yourself and that you you know you are qualified to represent the
People whereas you know sometimes people go through different channels and end up speaking for black people but those channels aren’t really in black people’s interest so then therefore what they say when they represent us isn’t really in our interest as well so I like that that
Principle and and and on that you know if I am saying something that my constituents or the people that I quote unquote represent don’t agree with um they should know how to hold me accountable as well you know that doesn’t mean that the things that I say
Uh are are bulletproof um but you know it it like like you said it’s just it’s just about a responsibility of uh the words that are coming out of your mouth you know and having others that can stand on you know um all right it froze up for a second I
Didn’t hear the last thing you said but if you want to go through no um let me see I was just saying this uh no when when people having being in a position where people elect you um and election is a good thing uh voting is a
Good thing we we’re taught to vote uh voting is is speaking that’s that’s using your voice to let the the the population know what your desire is so saying I want blue or I want red that’s powerful um understood keep going out yeah well you can go you can
Continue brother I don’t know what’s happening my end but but being on the being in a position where individuals are willing to speak you know and and and allow you to to speak for them as you said is it’s something that we um should honor um but
But at at the at the end of the day make sure these are the right individuals that are speaking for us all right um all right continuing it’s 702 um I think we got a couple more number eight number eight is our spiritual um objective and it stads to
The the name of the is to build a conscientious spiritual worship and I believe it says amongst the tribes of Africa um but we but we take that as a global directive um you know we don’t say that it’s just African thing um but I I I like the way that was worded
Because it doesn’t put us in the box of Christianity and or Islam um it it it says that um when we say one God we are in the box of Po monotheism we don’t believe in polytheism we believe in monotheism but we don’t necessarily say Islam or or Christianity although
That’s something that uh is still um I’m not GNA say up in the air Up For Debate but it is a a personal relationship you know and and in my opinion where I stand uh as president is that’s none of my business you know like
Um you know who you pray to um what you call you know the god that you pray to is not of my business I just encourage individuals to see uh that deity or God um to have a im image similar to their own you know but but what they call it
Um that’s not my position I have garvey’s position I know what Garvey uh believed but you know yeah it he never he never in my learning he never espoused um that we should force U his beliefs on others right yeah you can you can keep rolling
In the sake of the time time so uh we good check check yeah I’m I’m here I don’t know if it’s my end or your end that’s cutting out but just you can just keep rolling if if it’s number nine is the educational directive uh Garvey basically says that
We shouldn’t be satisfied with the education that we’re given uh we should supplement the education that we’re given by our oppressors uh with an education that we develop amongst ourselves so um the promotion of things like HBCU would be something that Garvey would believe in the establishment um
Highly he would believe in the establishment of the the independent African institutions um that would be uh the ultimate uh Garvey ideal in our time but at the end of the day uh Garvey said that um the white men’s history is taught to l l or or promote the white
Man and uh downgrade uh the Negro um we have to basically create our education to do the opposite uh to promote uh our people and and the legacy of our people that’s basically straightforward it’s educational yes yeah that’s fine with me I don’t know if the YouTube I don’t know
If the YouTube family is witnessing the breakups or whatever the stopping I’m I’m G wrap up I’m wrap up number 10 is economic uh basically the global economic we should be uh United and and organized globally economically um uh the the African continent has always and continues to provide all the resources
For the world um there’s no reason why we as African people should have to go outside of our own network uh for the things that we need um the African Network the African economic network uh should be the strongest economic network uh on the globe um so we have to build
That we have to maintain that uh and at the end of the day we have to we have to organize that from uh shea butter and and and bean pies to you know um um air airport Industries airplane Industries um shipping as Garvey did um you know space exploration at some
Point but uh all aspects uh from the beginning to the end the entire the minerals that everybody is you know raping us yeah and even our intellectual property that you know the the rest of the world follows and copies and steals after you know after we create stuff and
Then they go and make a whole bunch of money off of it and we get the Lesser we need to refine our own minerals yeah and stop selling our things out cheap and they get they get the crude and then sell us back to refined at a high high
Rate and and make all the money off of things we need to the most but you you you understand yeah the entire process um so the economics uh and number 11 the last aim and objective uh is to do everything in our power to um help in all negro communities uh and
That one is basically the way Garvey says it um there’s always work to be done in this endeavor and no stone should be left unturned so um whether it is you know a a youth um tutoring program you know if that’s not something that’s listed specifically if it is a
Elders uh reading program if that’s not something listed specifically in the previous 10 AMS and objects number 11 uh is is where uh those are are caught and obtained you know so for me as a as a garveyite um Coming uh into the knowledge of Garvey uh and and more
So you know when I read it I did not see any need for for you know um like you know organization like the black lives matter you know for me it was like what are you guys creating that’s new that hasn’t been done before you know um you
Know um I I but I have criticism for for for several organization especially the the newer ones um but in my criticism it it it comes down to what are you what aim and object are you addressing that uh one of our previous uh Master teacher programs has not addressed uh for us
Before Goa so those are the uh 11 aims and objects uh that’s what if anybody ask what the uni is what it stands for outside of the Preamble of the Constitution uh I would direct them to the 11 aims and objects of the unia thank you very much brother John
President John harrove of the Atlanta chapter of the universal negro impr Improvement Association um if you would please just again um reiterate contact information and membership information before we close and then we’ll see you though thank you my brother um contact information that’s the best way to reach
Us uh cell phone uh you can call us cell or text us 678 631 944 678 631 9404 uh you can reach us email um Atlanta division 421 atgmailcom or you can uh fill out application cbpm cbpm org jooin 421 but uh call text uh 678 out of your busy schedule for helping
You know people to understand what Marcus scarvey is all about what the universal negro is Improvement Association is all about because Marcus Garvey isn’t you know here in the physical form anymore but his organization is his representation of himself and it still exists it’s still relevant still functioning so if you
Want to you know be a part of what Marcus Garvey started and stand for what Marcus Garvey stood for There’s an opportunity right there you know so you don’t have no reason why you don’t you know do what Marcus said to do you know so thank you again my brother and we
Look forward to next time okay thank you brother and and and as you said um last thing and I I’ll let you close out let um as we defend Garvey I think the best way to do it is use his own words you know he he didn’t leave he left a lot of
Uh speeches philosophies and opinions selected writings and speeches um but also message to the people course of African philosophy so um you know he he he did do a uh uh phenomenal job in my opinion of telling his own story you know and defending himself uh in his
Time and having his words documented so that’s the first place that I would okay yeah that was you said that’s the first place that you would and I cut off what was the last thing you said um the first place I would recommend any brother or sister that that uh is
Interested on life Legacy and philosophy and opinions of marus Garvey is is go to his own words um he he left he left a lot out there to defend himself uh so you know let’s let’s um lean upon what he left us as primary text and primary
Resources uh and then we can build upon that um amongst amongst each other but uh he did a great job in my opinion of speaking for himself and that’s always where I would Point individuals and and promote is uh to his own words philosop and opinion selected writers and
Speeches and message to the people course of African philosophy a all right well give thanks again my brother thank you for your presence thanks for your expertise and your knowledge thanks for sharing and thank you also to Emmy Jake Garvey for making his words and works available for us in this generation to
Still be able to read wanted to acknowledge that you know as you said he did he did this and he did that she also was very fundamental in helping us in this generation so without further Ado you know thanks for everyone’s viewership and we can encourage you to
Come we’re here every other week every other Saturday so yeah we look forward to it again thank you brother peace Brother race first Grace first peace
