We support organizations that provide access to treatment and coordinate awareness and adverse advocacy campaigns to reduce health disparity we want to save lives and impact health related legislation we have co-sponsored health forums and our we plan to address diseases which disproportionately affect women and minorities and prevention and treatment options
Locally we have partnered with other agencies and organizations to increase the awareness of the rise of hiv cases in tennessee county we have partnered with the ywca to educate teens and young women on domestic violence and dating we volunteer for the krim festival of races
And some of us work and some of us actually participate in the race we have worked with the american cancer society and the susan g komen foundation to promote breast cancer awareness we do have plans to extend our health issues to areas including asthma prevention and management and environmental stewardship and sustainability and
The environmental stewardship project will include promoting strategies and awareness campaigns campaigns to encourage energy efficiency conservation eco-living restoration and urban gardening and i already started i have a garden every year in my yard in the backyard it’s a small spot when i grow enough vegetables to feed me all right okay
Excellent it’s appropriate that i mentioned a couple things you’ve heard a number of the groups talk about their work with big brothers big sisters and it’s important to know that big brothers big sisters has a national partnership with the pan atlantic council and they’re working with um i know
Alpha no alpha phi alpha that partnership has been in place for a very long time a couple years ago they established a formal partnership with kappa alpha psi and omega sci-fi and then here locally because we have very aggressive women about service they said we will not be left out it’s
Also important to know because i don’t want to be impeached as the president of the national panhellenic council that we are uh proud supporters of the flint area educational foundation and so if any of you are interested in supporting scholarships and supporting young people going off to college you
Can make a contribution to the flint area educational foundation who award scholarships on a regular basis so at this time i think it’s appropriate to ask members of the flint area educational foundation to stand and if any of you have twenty dollars that you want to give to that foundation today
Members will are prepared to take your money today let’s give them a hand i don’t want to be impeached as a president so i think it’s important that you know that when we look at what we have done at the national and local level we have addressed issues relating to diabetes
Cancer we often participate in many of the walkathons so that we can show our support to help address the issues that are severely impacting our community with our seniors we participate in the valley aging area aging organization their senior power day because we want to support everyone across the life span starting
With their youngest to our seniors and may we all be blessed to when they be seniors in the issue of addressing women issues we look at the issues of domestic violence money management eating disorders addictive behaviors we’re partners with the 50 million pound challenge because we know that obesity
And diabetes is significantly impacting us we also address issues relating to men we’re very concerned about the issue of prostate cancer and how it impacts us on the local level we always support individuals and i want to say on the international level we really have a
Drive to address the issue of aids and hiv it’s not just an international issue it’s a local issue that’s significantly impacting not only adults but also our young great okay so that same question to charles montgomery what are the kappas doing to improve the health of this community
Kappa psi has a program entitled senior kappa affairs actually that’s basically just not for seniors but it’s also just examining the the medical conditions of african-american men within the community right now men you probably don’t know that we’re building that we’re not building but dr clarence clarence pierce of the hamilton medical
Clinic is building a new new facility on north saginaw street and he is also a member of cap alpha psi fraternity so we try to help to address a lot of issues with through the senior capital affairs we also have partnered with saint jews children’s hospital where cowboy alpha site does have their
Own wing there we’re proud to say now that question is to mr payne could you please tell us what the omegas are doing to improve health of this community um for this direct community uh we support an activity each year uh in our mandated programs again and that’s around the uh
Dr charles drew blood drive of course dr drew who’s his brother actually invented blood plasma and unfortunately he pat he passed away for not being able to get this plug the blood plasma that he actually invented ironically so this year in honor of that this chapter omicron roll does a
Does a annual blood drive at the american red cross now certainly in a district and national level we do concerning the black community with you know prostate and hypertension diabetes but locally that’s probably our biggest thing to really impact and contribute to the community is to make sure that we
Facilitate our blood drive great thank you now that question to um to miss barbara johnson and you can talk about and then you’ve mentioned some of this but are there other things that you would like to mention about what alpha kappa alpha is doing to improve the health in the community
Some of the things that we’re doing is holding awareness workshop to help our community help our women young women know about we talked about the breast cancer here but there are other things that they should be also aware of they should know about healthy eating preparing meals that are that will help
Their families to be healthier as they move on they should know about how to help their children in school and help them how to address teachers when they need to go and talk to a teacher so these are all part of the plans that really are part of health our mental health as
Well as our physical health absolutely thank you for sharing that now to isaiah oliver tell us what alpha phi alpha is doing locally alpha phi alpha sponsors at yearly uh men’s health fair and this year is hosted at mount olive on june 18th but at that health fair we just build awareness for
African-american males on the issues that are going on with us help i mean a lot of us don’t attend we don’t go to the doctor regularly or we go a little too late so it’s just building awareness the more people are exposed to the issues that they can face the better
They are handling them so that’s one initiative that we have going forth locally around health sure thank you now to miss sharon sawyer tell us what delta sigma theta is doing locally the deltas sponsor a health fair that includes free blood pressure kidney and cholesterol screening as well
As other health information and services we also participate in the american cancer society’s relay for life event and um we also have a new initiative it’s called take the pledge to save lives and it’s in collaboration with the national kidney foundation to increase awareness about organ donation
Another initiative that is new on the national level all local chapters are being challenged because we have our 100 year anniversary coming up in 2013 to walk 2013 miles by 2013. so they’re giving us two years to do it and we’ve already got a good uh
Start on it great great thank you how many people know that all of these things were happening in the community did you know i don’t think any of us knew so this is a great opportunity again to learn more about the different organizations and the wonderful work that we’re doing in
The community so you’ve heard us talk about education you’ve heard us talk about health now we’re going to talk about economic development and again i already mentioned but it’s important to reiterate that the lending council as a coalition has a foundation which is a flint area educational foundation under
The community foundation of greater flint and so at this time we want to ask you what is your organization’s do what are your organizations doing to improve economic development or to increase entrepreneurship or knowledge of entrepreneurship in the community and with this question we’re going to start with mr charles
Montgomery tell us what kappa alpha psi is doing off the site right now we were promoting our capital credit union but when the economy took a slump cap alpha psi the credit union kind of took a slump for right now but we still have different workshops promoting more knowledge about owning your own
Business different wealth different path that you might take usually it is happening pretty much at a our national level or our northern province level to provide that information to our members of the fraternity all right great next question is to mr paint tell us what you’re doing for economic development and entrepreneurship um
This we kind of succeed to the district level where we do have a functioning omega credit union has been to our awareness that we’re in the business of uh purchasing select property for the prospect of building fraternity homes on undergraduate chapters to provide places for our children to stay
On uh historical black college universities and major universities and uh there’s plenty of workshops talking about you know entrepreneurship and you know investments but on the uh but that usually lends itself on the district and the national level all right dr stewart we’re going to allow you to
Answer that question now tell us what zeta are doing thank you first i’d like to say that at the national level our international president has worked very hard for the issue of cultural copyright for stepping she was very instrumental in the entire divine nine getting um basically acknowledged for the cultural
Contribution of stepping in the spirit uh national step competition so at the national and international level we’re very aware of having the rights to our culture in terms of economic development we have several properties one that i’d like to mention because it is here in michigan is birch haven in idlewild
The national and michigan and all our chapters are very active in restoring that property to its glory we also have workshops and grant and proposal writing we really focus also with our youth on financial competency and have partnered with different organizations to achieve that goal we also have partnered with
The tom joyner foundation to support historically black college and scholarship programs members have been active in organizing the greater beecher business association in writing grants for the beach of facade improvements and also the signage entering the district we’ve also participated our members in market analysis and feasibility study
We’ve also had members that have participated in many different workshops that lead to financial competence and working on grant acquisitions for our scholarships and i also like to mention that we like to support local businesses with one of our sisters who owns america speedy friends so we really like to keep our
Financial competence and keep the money moving within the community thank you thank you thank you for sharing that now miss sawyer economic development entrepreneurship on the national level delta sigma data sorority established the delta research and educational foundation 40 years ago as a public charity supporting scholastic achievement through scholarships public service programs
Through grants and research initiatives focused on african aware american women over the years the delta foundation as it is known today has directed its charitable giving to program initiatives reflected in our founding mission the delta foundation awards scholarships to student applicants who are entering college or continuing their academic pursuits
The delta foundation awards grants to local delta chapters and non-profit community organizations with similar commissions and goals as those of the sorority these awards address the programs affecting african-american women and their families in the areas of our five-point thrust this research portion the center for research on african-american women focuses on critical issues
