Is a special edition of The Factor tonight. In our first half hour, we explore the conspiracy theories that had me Googling every thing online with that said, we’re diving into some of the most controversial ones that are hot right now on social media. We start with some people’s decision to walk away
From Greek life and denounce their letters, meaning they were in a fraternity or sorority and said, I’m done. Or some say because Greek life goes against their Christianity, meaning some say there are rituals involved in Greek life and some have called it even get this demonic
. Check it out. And here’s a red flag. Even in the prayer, it says May the true spirit of the fraternity guide our hearts, guide our thoughts and control our lives like it’s the holy Spirit is supposed to do that. Like when I say it’s so much misinterpretation of scripture,
So much replaced point of scripture with the fraternity. It’s just demonic. There you heard it. Joining us now to talk about it, Marcus Sullivan, member of Kappa Alpha PSI. Carl Coleman Butler member of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Brandon Williams, minister and member of Alpha Phi Alpha. Glad to have
You all here on The Factor. Thank you. Looking at me like what the hell did I get myself into? Can I go home? So, Carla, when you hear people talk like this and you’ve heard it before. I’ve heard it. And it’s been going on for years, but now
We’re seeing a resurgence of it . When you see people say Greek fraternity, and I think many people think about Greek and they think about the Greek gods and they think we’re about rituals. So is that reality for many of the Greek organizations that are out there. So as a
Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha and we’ve been established for 115 years and the founders of the organization, I would think across the divine nine organizations, these were students and classical students in liberal arts, education Nation were studying Greek and Latin. And so they adopt and the terminology and the words from
Greek has nothing to do with Greek gods. And so I think there’s a misinterpretation if you don’t understand our history, that these were young people studying classical education, and they were very be a liberal arts education is very rooted in Greek and Latin scholar. And Marcus, do you see this hurting Greek organized
Options for potential members who say they may join, but they may be from a Christian based household and they say this will cause problems in my family with my religion. So I’m not going to go there. I’m not going to approach that. Well, no, I look at it and I think about how
Social media has a big impact on things, right? When it comes to Greek organization, most of them have rituals that don’t leak out, right? People have their own thing inside, but then when you Google things and you get on social media, you can find anybody that can post anything
For clickbait and actually lead you down a rabbit hole that you know nothing about. And so are there rituals in Greek organizations? Yeah, absolutely . And so do you think that could send the wrong message to devout Christians who say, I need to follow the Bible and prays no
One else? Other than God? Well, when you and I know you’re Christian. Yeah. So when you hear the word rituals, it just sounds spooky. Key, right? Yeah, but the rituals have nothing to do with seances and chants and bells, and it has nothing to do with that. That’s just the word
That it starts with. Like, it’s rituals, right? It sounds a certain way, but I’m sure in each one of our organizations, there’s no cult like chant, and none of that’s going on when we have our rights. That we get from our founders that we just. Brandon, let’s hear from you.
Yeah. The religious base and also the Greek base. Yeah absolutely. I think I would mirror the very same thoughts that that have been said. And I think even more it’s about one there is not that conflict because oftentimes it’s where your heart is. Right. And in many of our organizations, while
There is a discipline towards our actions, then there is a reverence towards placing God ahead of everything that we do right in our work inside of the communities and our work. Just brother to brother, right from organization to organization. And God is the lead of that, right? The Bible oftentimes
Gives us principles that guide how we act. Our servitude for our communities, for our brothers and sisters, and specifically, historically within the black community, how we support it and the fraternities and sororities have given organization for that. And when it comes to adding in the religious factors, oftentimes
For many of us, we start our meetings off with homage to Christ, homage to God, knowing that he gives us strength and he gives us guidance to do all of those things. However there are often times some misinterpretations of those that, for whatever reason, who knows, may have been some hurt
Along the way that have taken some things south or some things north and made their own internal irritation that that somehow denounces our reverence towards God and Jesus Christ. But it’s the exact opposite. And Carla are we talking about people who are busybodies on social media who ain’t got
Nothing else to do? So let’s, let’s, let’s, let’s find out what calling them doing. They they praising the devil over their you know, some of the postings recently of former members of our organization even I actually when I read it, I was actually disappointed and disturbed that that was their interpretation, their
Experience, because I’m a Christian first. I became a Christian first before I became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, and I have never found a conflict in my walk as a Christian with my organized national affiliation and so then I read the comments and the comments do read to me
As people who are not familiar with the organization and that they were founded on Christian principles. And as my brother said, here we open with prayer. We have chaplains. Rouz It’s very you know, many of us are as active in our churches and houses of worship as we are in
The sorority or fraternity. And so I see it as complementary to my Christian journey. And if we look at Jesus and his model, he’s a servant leader. And so we talk about servant leadership in our organizations, how we are serving the community, how we are uplifting children in particular, and families. We do
Share commonalities across the Divine Nine in our purposes and our outreach, and we collaborate with each other. And so I you know, I struggle when I see these denouncements. And again, social media has such impact on our lives. So 20, 30 years ago, people might have done this privately. You just didn’t see
It publicly. Yeah. Okay. Got it. We
