Nowadays well I’m actually living back here in Knoxville Tennessee um in the financial space uh we do a lot with Comprehensive financial planning it’s mainly since we’re going to talk sports let’s say uh on the the offensive side of things is more so building a business selling the business um really just
Having your money working for you while you’re also working um defensively more more so trying to mitigate risk and that’s you know whether that’s now or in the future but the the biggest conversation is understanding what your highest value Asset is and how do you make sure you protect those things at a
Comprehensive level and we kind of just walk through life with you from that stpoint so Jon we we were going to have you on last week and life happened um but um I’m curious after watching how we played against North Carolina last week and then we get back
To full strength This Week With George Mason what were some of your thoughts watching those two games and and as you’re watching this team what do you like what do you want to see what stood out to you yeah I mean I really enjoy watching this team I mean obviously they
Uh love playing with one another you can see the cohesion I think one of the thing that stands out is just the different motor that I think this team has versus what last year’s teams didn’t have um and obviously some of the new faces really help um and I’m looking
Forward to just seeing what we look like midseason because I think we still have some adjusting to do and obviously there’s gonna be some growing pains with that but I think um what what what impressed me the most just about what happened in the George Mason game was
Just ad Do’s you know activity I think if he can find a way to to be consistent in his role I think it’ll be awesome for us and IV would see aaka what he does in those in those other minutes is pretty impressive as well and so I’m just
Really excited what the what the upside of this team looks like hopefully we can stay healthy and obviously our guys just continue to play for one another it’s a very different team when they’ve got everybody out there it’s kind of mindblowing how much better they are when they’re at full strength yeah
But you I think what’s awesome is like it’s still very early in the season we’re seeing a lot lot of good competition and I think granted The Growing Pains of what most teams won’t go or won’t experience because they they may have uh a team that’s that’s been
Together for two years or they may have a a senior class that that may have you know be a weather to storm early on I think with us having the new faces and experience some of this great competition early it’s going to serve us well moving into you know later SE in the
Season so that kind of leads into my next question you know we have played one of the toughest schedules in America but why do you think this team has struggled a little bit with consistency yeah um that could be for a multitude of reasons you know you know
Basketball is a a weird game when you think about trying to get five players to be playing at the highest level and being in sync while doing so I mean you got new guys in the offense that are different you know focal points you know Josiah’s playing really well um you know
Some of the shots that he weren’t he wasn’t making you know late last season he’s you know those shots are going in now I don’t think he’s doing anything different he’s just playing with with a more confident and obviously he looks healthy you know he’s looking looking
Very strong so I think it’s it’s a it’s the the opportunity that we have right now with just the teams that we’ve already seen know getting ready to go into SEC play you know we’re going to be able to dominate early on that’s that’s my hope well Jon so you were at uh
Tennessee from 2010 2014 is that is that correct am I remembering that correctly yeah well I actually came in in ‘ 09 which is awesome um I got the chance to I I had the red shirt I left uh Marquette uh right at the the winter uh
I think it was December January when I left and9 so of those four years A lot happened I’m sure uh got to play a lot of neat places that kind of thing but if you had to pick one memory I know it’s a really tough question but
If you had to pick one M that you’re like you that was my favorite thing that happened my favorite memory what would that be from being your time as a volunteer man if I had to if I had to paint a picture it would be we’d be here
All night and we probably get in trouble for some of the things I would say I’m GNA I’m G to keep it high level I would say opportunity to um you know live in a dormatory with other individuals that’s all for the same goal all looking to um you know build Legacy
And obviously make it to the next level because obviously when you’re uh a part of a team you know the main goal is to win and win as many games as possible but you know the the Brotherhood that’s built in the camaraderie of you know being in close proximity to one another
Is it’s you know how it goes it’s unmatched you know it’s Forge forever and I think um just getting the opportunity to be around guys 24/7 you know we’re studying together we’re traveling together we’re going through you know hell week together we’re going to weights together we’re we’re not
Sleeping you know we’re getting up at 4:00 a.m. to go get extra shots all these things that kind of go into just building a good team or just a winning mindset you know those are the things that you just you you cling to you know so before before Ian asked his next
Question your answer right there really surprises me because of all the things you could have picked you’re picking the dorm but at the same time I was a college athlete too and if you now that you’ve said that if somebody had asked me what was my favorite part of that
Time it’s probably those moments in the dorm and like you said most of them you can’t say on air but you know it’s it is those moments that you you know I still talk to teammates all the time and we all laugh about stuff stupid stuff we
Did in the dorms and um it’s it’s funny that how that how true that is that that is the part that really stands out yeah man so I wish granted um cameras are everywhere nowadays and you know kids are recording everything we we didn’t have that mind set to put everything on
Camera or record it I I I kind of wish we had a little bit of it um because now granted the visualization of it is still cool but and the conversations and the group chats those things but just to put up old footage of when you’re like you
Know 21 18 19 that kind of thing um and just seeing what your mindset was the kind of conversations you were having just like your mannerisms at that point in time in your life uh would be awesome just to revert back to and say huh look
At the look how far I’ve come or look look where I am am I regressing that kind of thing do y’all have a do youall have a group text where you just sit and talk about crazy stuff that coach Martin and assistant coaches said to you all
Through the years man that group chat runs Deep’s what’s crazy is I’m actually in a couple group chats uh I’m in I’m in a v i can’t really you know like disclose the individuals in the group these group chats but you know I’m in a vintage
Group chat where we got a couple you know old school Veterans UT guys I’m me you know uh my my classes that I done been through um some of the classes before me and some of those guys are in there and so it’s just a it’s a it’s a
Big conglomerate uh of minds and just to see what they where they are today and what they’re doing and obviously some of the conversations we’re having some of them are very impactful um obviously we still have that that kid-like mentality um and I think that’s one of the things
That that keeps people young and keep keeps people going what percentage of those chats would you say are people just going hands man I I can’t tell you how many times I wake up I’m I’m 20 messages overdue or 30 messages overdue from even
Just open it so I or I’m in a meeting and it’s just going crazy by people just sending you know memes and gifts and just random conversations of just you know it’s awesome but then again it’s like wow um some of these guys are just hilarious
247 well of all the uh the places you must have gotten to play you know last week this year’s team got to play in the dean Dome um of all the places that you got to play What was the most you know iconic or favorite place that you got to
Play as a Tennessee ball other than TBA of course but you know where where was the place that’s City Center to you yeah EXC me that’s that’s another crazy story I’m not impress well I don’t want to say that I think I think I think things are
Just I’m not ready for Change and sometimes change is scary and I just got to adjust that’s all um I love how you said that just then you know but um I was say my favorite place to play honestly and I’ve never really said this out loud but it would be probably like
The Maui Gym um because it’s it’s it’s like a High School atmosphere it’s like it’s like you know fresh off the bus coming in you know we we get in a small locker room it’s hot it’s you know got one side bleachers the other side you know it’s just sitting standing room
Kind of thing and um and usually the that whole kind of thing it was it was uh it was awesome experience playing in Maui well if memory serves correctly you had a heck of a game when you were in Maui is that right you still with us Don oh yeah I’m
There I I feel like y’all froze so I was g i was g hit the robot or something you know breakdown so uh if memory serves correctly you had a pretty pretty good game in when you were in Maui is that is that right yeah it was it was solid man
I I actually um when I think back on that opportunity I I kind of wish I would have just been more locked in which is weird to say um I felt like that game I was just flowing like I really wasn’t thinking so it really
Wasn’t uh it doesn’t look like it was as intense as it was even though we lost it I think double overtime we actually should have won that game but um I missed a lot of layups bro I missed a lot of layups I made all my free throws
Which was awesome you know what I mean I think it was like something like 17 for 17 or 18 for like I I may have missed one actually um but uh it it was a it was a good experience man obviously the game the competition uh the high school
Atmosphere like you can’t beat that kind of stuff so you got to the free throw line more in that game by yourself than this year’s team did in the whole game against Kansas I think that’s right well you know uh the game was called different then we we’ll say that
Which I like you know it’s SEC so I’m curious when you watch this team and I know you watch it through a different lens than most most just regular fans do what are your expectations for them what what do you think the ceiling is for this team yeah
See that’s a that’s a hard question but it’s a good question um I think when you say as a fan when when we set our expectations you know they’re very High sometimes they’re very unrealistic and I I’m I’m a fan fan like I love you know watching the young talent and seeing it
How like how much better they are than we were at that stage you know what I mean the the the skill level is vly improved um from when I was young until what some of what these college guys are doing so I I’m very like enthusiastic about watching them and their success
But like I don’t really have expectations for this team I have hopes you know what I mean because I know what it’s like to be a part of a team that has immense talent and that has uh a big lofty goal of winning SEC you know uh
Championship or being number one in the nation that whole kind of thing and it just doesn’t happen you know what I mean it’s like sometimes it’s a lot goes into a a successful season not even just a season where you win something but like where you can be like you look back man
This was a success like it’s a lot that goes into it so for this team I just hope that they can reach a point where they are holding a banner they they are having confetti come down you know what I mean and we’re celebrating that’s
That’s it I I don’t know what that looks like I’m I’m an optimistic guy guys so I’m curious so I had forgotten until you said it before you were on air that you actually went with Coach Martin to Missouri and um you know you were you
Were on the bench there um so you you’ve been given the scout you’re still at Missouri you’re playing Tennessee you get assigned the Scout how are you defending this team that’s a really good question oh why you see why you why you get me into that mode
Because I think that that takes a little bit more due diligence because at the end of the day like I said this team is still becoming like you know when you look at heavy we are we’re we’re in Maui we just won a game you got to play somebody
Tomorrow you got to come up with that Scout hurry what What’s it gonna look like I I think see see I’m a different kind of guy though Russ you so like when you think about if I’m on the floor I think what we play manto man and we we
Guard our that’s how we’ve always played and I think if any team that’s going to win anything you got to have that individual Pride to be able to guard your man no matter how good he is on the opposite side and I think if if we have
That I think we’re we’re we have what it takes to win National Championship well you know it’s interesting you mentioned both Adu and aaka and in when Rustin asked you the first question there uh couple people in the comments have already mentioned him as well Zack welcome Zack good to have
You buddy he said he thought ad and aaka really stepped up the other night uh Zack always comments about a waka’s rebounding he loves the way aaka rebounds the ball um if to if well if ad do can hit consistently hit outside shot like he did the other night that’s a whole other
Level to this team I mean that that brings a whole new per you know element that they can provide uh Brennan welcome Brennan he said Jon he’s excited to see you I appreciate do you get to go to practice very often yeah well I actually just went over to this uh right before
The George Mason game I’m probably gonna go over there um tomorrow um to see them get warmed up for Illinois um but but um when they have home games or when they’re um they’re you know first day off of a road game they may get some
Light stuff I kind of just try to be around the guys just Empower them as much as possible um because I think at some level it’s more so just about confidence these guys have the skills they have the you know the strength and The Willpower all that whole kind of
Thing it’s just more so about having their confidence and having it all clicking at the same time what do you think of uh what do you think of Kade Phillips have you had a chance to watch him in practice much uh I can’t I can’t
Honestly say I have to be able to give like um a honest opinion on him um and so I guess what would be your thoughts on on what you see from him well I saw I’m just I’m just curious how they’re going to end up using him because I saw
Him play quite a bit in high school and you know one part of his game that’s been non-existent and it’s because of how they’re using him but he’s actually got a really nice shot he’s got a lot of range and thought they’d use him more as
A pick and pop guy but he hasn’t really been floating to the perimeter at all so I’m just curious what’s happening in practice and you know why why he’s not really being utilized that way yet I think eventually they will but well what what I’ll say like when anytime you see
A guy that’s struggling man because man I didn’t have my struggles um it it may just be something that’s that that’s a com a combination of things that comes with like being in college you know traveling School study hall conversations personal life still trying
To figure out who you are as a young man it’s a lot that goes into that and so and then you gotta get on the court and perform at a level that’s that’s deemed respectable from your coach that has probably a high standard you know what
I’m saying so it’s it’s one of those things where it’s like man I go 0 for five or I I shoot a three and I airball it or it just don’t come off right or I shoot it at the wrong time I I may be coming out the game you
Know so it may be a lot of different things going his mind and then he probably like I may have just met you know a young lady that I want to take to Chipotle later and she’s in you know what I’m saying so he’s like man I just
Want to make sure I get on the Statue he drive hard then he gets a charge it’s so many things you know his head that he’s probably struggling with but you know at the end of the day I think you know his teammates are going to keep in power on
Him because they got he got good teammates and I think the coaching staff they do a good job with development so whatever he’s struggling with he’ll come out of that funk yeah I love that it was Chipotle I mean I mean you know it could have been
You know covers but a lot of people ain’t even had cover which is crazy when it’s in Knoxville uh some of the other comments that have come through uh Eric welcome Eric good to have you buddy he said what’s up V Bros and Geron nice to see

Uh she said what do you think one question that she has hasn’t been answered yet what do you think needs to be improved on her current team um Improvement I would probably the only Improvement I would want to see uh is is maybe just more talking or more
Conversation uh on the court between the guys I haven’t seen as much lately I mean I think that used to be a staple of what last teams uh was just the the constant conversation with each other you know you know I I think when you’re when you forced to talk on the floor
That means you’re thinking your mind and your motor is stud going so you Al you’re ultimately study adapting to what’s happening so that way you don’t get lost or or you kind of have a brain fart on defense where you get back doored or somebody rebounds you because
You’re standing still um so just probably just more conversation that would probably be the only thing I think everything else kind of work as up Brennan’s enjoying listening to you he said Jon is wise beyond words oh man I I know I know enough to be
Dangerous uh Zach said it’s early in the season still we had a three-game losing streak what’s your confidence level on this team making it past the sweet 16 or potentially even getting to the final four yeah I mean I think you need to lose and I think the teams that we’re
Losing to are teaching us valuable lessons and the way we’re losing is um we can take them as point of realizations especially when we go back and watch film a lot of it is self-inflicted live ball turnovers you know misplays here or there or just assignments rather um and so it’s really
Just like okay what can I learn from this three- game losing streak and then how can we flip that and and going on you know a 10 15 game winning streak you know I think I think once when you when you win all the time you really don’t
Look at the flaws as flaws you say ah we just shot bad oh we just play b or and then you then again you get into a game or a tournament style play and you you get smacked in the mouth and it’s been you know that that glaring um weakness
Has been looking at you at the whole season you just chose not to look at it so I think we need to lose early and you know I think we’ll be great we’ll be better for it later watching watching Purdue and North Carolina and um I’m blanking who was the other one
Kansas Kansas Kansas um when I watch those three games and tell me if this is what you were seeing too I felt like we played a lot of straight man and didn’t really try to do anything too creative and and I almost wondered if that was the coaching staff saying there’s pretty
Good odds we’re going to see one of these teams later in the season so let’s not show them what we’re going to do then let’s just play straight up and see what happens yeah well well I I’ll say that that’s a really good point because
I know a lot of times if we line up you know the uh the uh I guess the Scout and we say okay who we have versus who they got we like our odd okay we gonna go man we not gonna overcompensate and make it too complicated we gonna go out there
And just see what happens that’s a lot of the conversation especially when you know you play a team early on and you may see them down the road but then again it gives it gives you opportunity to see how they operate in the man in the man uh system because then most
Teams once you do throw a wrinkle there you may throw a zone or you may throw a trap here and there or you may just change up how you defensively cover some of these these schemes that they run through it gives you more leverage later
So you you you make a very valid point with that let’s see Zach so here’s dra this is this is why you’re gonna love Zach right here so Zach is he is allal optimist he is he is like Tennessee is never going to lose kind of guy and I love
He is all about it he says we’re cutting down the Nets at the end of the year baby I I feel I’m right there with you Zach uh he also commented that his his tacos are better than Chipotle’s because he uses habanero sauce with guac hey I can’t vouch for that but I

Like that eight minute stretch where they just couldn’t buy a bucket and you know they learned things about their team in that game uh that that surely is going to reap benefits on the future at the end of the the North Carolina game rest and I were talking about this after
That game you know we saw them essentially say all right Dalton take over and it wasn’t just he’s coming off a screen catching the ball you know on the wing or what no he was bringing the ball up the court uh he was he was he was running they weren’t running any
Offense it was just Dalton bring it up here comes your high ball screen go do something I mean that that’s literally all they did for most of the I like I like that opportunity though because I think a lot of the ball screen when you
Have a a good player that can make good reads and we got Shooters I think it it allows the floor to be or at least the last two minutes of the game for us to kind of M maintain and manage that I I don’t think we’ve had that opportunity
In the last year or so would just with a guy we can say okay here the last two or three minutes we’re going to consistently Run High high pick and roll see how they guard it and let’s make plays out of it and and that’s to agree
I mean that’s what worked against North Carolina because all of a sudden zakai was wide open Santi was wide open Jordan gayy was wide open they’re just spot shoot um it I think they definitely learned something for the future yeah that’s what I’m looking I’m looking forward to this team just study building
More um cohesiveness as as it goes on and obviously like I said seeing what it looks like after the New Year it’s going to be pretty pretty uh intense I think so we got a couple more questions here couple time for a couple more uh
The only 10 you see she asked a good question so in the past uh Rick Barnes has you know called out he’s not afraid to call out players in his postgame press conference or something like that and I think a lot of that personally I
Don’t know Rick but I think a lot of that has to do with his relationship with his players that that he feels like he can you know do that um she said is that something we should be concerned about because with a transfer portal uh could players be like I’m done and just
Leave like what do you think that’s a slippery slope man you know um obviously the coach knows his players he knows who he can push what he can say and who who he’s gonna motivate by what he says and so I wouldn’t I me personally have been a part of the team
I’ve never I would never really question a coach’s motives especially if they always been in in in alignment with his character and so I don’t think he’s doing anything malicious when if if and when he does say something that that may be a head scratcher obviously he may be
Trying to you know motivate his players um in a different manner than some people would like but uh I think players are soft these days that’s just is what it is it and when you have something as accessible as the transfer port and you can leave and play play
Right away I mean even if they treating you with love and the utmost respect players still leave because it’s the opportunity I think that they have available to do so and if it’s like oh I can go play with a friend or I can go
Get bigger nil money here or I can go do this here with this team they’re probably gonna take it no matter how no matter what the situation is here yep yep and that and so the only thing you see add it on she said you know I understand that old mentality but
Kids these days don’t respond like the old days she said I just worry about it especially with other teams can’t bring in the transfer portal I think I think I mean obviously you’re not going to hit 100% but I think coach Barnes does a pretty good job of evaluating kids and
Understanding who’s gonna be good for him um you know he goes into New York City and gets zakai and tobay yeah there’s nothing Rick Barnes is going to do that’s going to phase zakai Ziggler or Tob awaka they’ve heard way worse in New York City um um you know Jami mhak
Is just a scrapper you know there’s nothing Rick Barnes is g to say that’s going to bother Jami he’s just going to keep fighting um you know there’s a couple of guys on that bench I worry about a little bit they they’re pretty thin skinned but for the most part I
Think he’s got a roster full of guys that understand he’s gonna coach them hard well I me you know you know who you signed up to play for I think a lot of that goes into some of these kids decisions so they know they know that
The coach they have and they know uh he has their back and so whatever he says is probably um in may not be in their best interest when they hear it but it’s always probably in their favor to get them going in some positive direction uh Shannon deanan said y’all

Knoxville we got Illinois this top 20 matchup this Saturday noon game uh then the following Tuesday we got Georgia Southern and then a week from this Saturday we travel to San Antonio for the Hall of Fame game against NC State so that’s that’s two pretty stout teams
We got in a week’s time there we got Illinois at home and then NC State on a neutral court so who do you think for those those games ah see Zach I love Zack look at this he said he said uh three and 0 looking good to me hey I’m
Right there with Zach I feel the same way I think we gonna go three and0 in that stretch so who do you feel like needs to really step up and like for example Santi you know you know does he need to catch fire again this these this stretch
Here to to find his shot again because he hadn’t hadn’t been the the same type of offensive player the last game or so did does this is this an opportunity for him to really step up you know if as Dalton is he gonna take over what what
Do you think who needs to step up in these games well I think it would be uh interesting just to see how these guys continue to get comfortable in their role because I feel like right now uh we’re still developing a rotation that’s that’s kind of been hard to figure out
And I may and I speak from like a a players perspective um you know if if my minutes are um you know 25 one game and then I’m 15 the next and then I may go 32 then I’m like you know 11 whatever it may be Grant I know that’s that’s a large
Pendulum um but I’m just say it may be difficult for some of these guys to find their rhythm or find out who they are within this system because like I said it’s a new developing system with new faces and even the coaching staff are figuring out which which five is the
Most uh impactful five the most productive five which the which is their best defensive five and so they’re probably still going through the lumps and bruises of you know or the es and flows of trying to figure out this rotation totally agree totally agree uh uh Shannon said Santi needs to step up
He this is prime time for him uh Eric said I’m excited about this vs basketball team in my opinion they have the team to get to the final four come March go bing orange absolutely Um Zack said don’t get mad but VES and zakiah hadn’t played like
Themselves all year they both need to step up and I’m sure zakai returning from injury is a huge part of that too yeah zakai shouldn’t even be on the court yet the fact that he’s playing is pretty miraculous yeah he’s a hard worker absolutely well Jon I got a

With Coach Martin how would you how would you summarize it what would you say about him I would say coach is an awesome individual I mean he’s um from the moment I met him he’s always imp parted WI on me um and he’s a mentor of
Mine gr you know we talk I mean we in a group chat together you know and so like there’s there’s there’s different levels of of player coach relationships and I think me and him have developed a really unique Bond and obviously I can call him ask for advice and he’ll give me
Direction and obviously he’s just he’s he’s unbiased he’s genuine he don’t he he don’t sugarcoat uh many conversations so uh I feel like uh I I was you know blessed with the opportunity to to be able to play for him and obviously get an opportunity to continue my education
And you know obviously I got a masters under him it’s like you know he he he brought the opportunity up to me which was awesome um and so it’s just like you can’t you can’t um script that kind of stuff I I always wish that his time in Knoxville had ended differently because
I I think he’s just an amazing man and um it it’s he’s one of the good ones in college basketball yeah and you know what’s crazy is I mean he’s actually enjoying his uh his uh hisself right now being out of coaching he the freedom he has and obviously he’s just being able
To to build things at his leisure and I think it’s uh it’s awesome to see just the the enjoyment he has absolutely uh one other comment came through son lost his grandmother before the first game this season so that’s probably why he’s been a little off and that makes total sense yeah
