You made us and you made us for a purpose so that we might glorify you forgive us for those times when we ought to have put you first when we ought to have served your purposes obeyed your word and yet we’ve done our own thing gone Our Own Way followed our own

Desire we need forgiveness we need renewal we need your Holy Spirit to work in US to make your word come alive to us and to strengthen us so that we might not just be hearers of the word but do yours living in obedience to its commands so Lord As We Gather here this

Is righteous so that we would walk in your way so bless our time we ask and pray through Christ Our Lord amen so for the last time this year we’re we we’re in uh the Book of Genesis God willing we’ll carry on in the new year but this evening we we

Finish our studies for uh this part of the Year looking at chapter 4 and veres 1-6 chapter 4 and veres 1-6 as we we remember this is the word of God now Adam knew Eve his wife and she conceived and bore Keen saying I have produced a man with the

Help of the Lord and again she bore his brother Abel now Abel was a keeper of sheep and Ken a worker of the grind in the course of time Ken brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the grind and Abel also brought the

Firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions and the Lord had regard for eel and his offering but for Kean and his offering he had no regard so Ken was very angry and his face fell the Lord said to Ken why are you angry and why has your face

Fallen if you do well will you not be accepted and if you do not do well sin is crouching at the door its desire is contrary to you but you must rule over it Ken spoke to Abel his brother and when they were in the field Ken rose up

Against his brother Abel and killed him then the Lord said to Ken where is eel your brother he said I do not know am I My Brother’s Keeper the Lord said what have you done the voice of your brothers blood is crying to me from the grind and now you are cursed from

The grind which has opened its might to receive your brother’s blood from your hand when you work the grind it shall no longer yield to you its strength you shall be a fugitive and a Wanderer on the earth K said to the Lord my punishment is greater than I can bear behold you

Have driven me today away from the ground and from your Feast I shall be hidden I shall be a fugitive and a Wanderer on the earth and whoever Finds Me will kill me then the Lord said to him not so if anyone kills Kean Vengeance shall be taken on him

Sevenfold and the Lord put a mark on Kean lest any who find him should attack him then Ken went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of no East of Eden and we give thanks to God for this reading from his

Word we worship again as we sing my Jesus my Savior My Jesus my Savior Lord there is UN like you all of my days I want to praise the wonders of your Mighty myt My Shelter Tower of refuge and strength let every breath all that I never cease to worship you showout to the Lord on the earth and I see Power and mesty praise to the King and the Seas will Roar at the sound of your I sing for Joy at the work of your forever I love you forever I nothing compares to the prise I have in You my Jesus my Savior for there is none like you all of my days I want to praise the wonders of your Mighty love my my shelter Tower of refuge and Str let every bre all that I am never cease to Worship You Shout to the Lord all the Earth let sing power and mesty praise to the king mountains down and the Seas will Roar at the S of your Name I sing for joy in the work of your hands forever I love you forever nothing compares to the prise I Have let’s pray together father as we now turn to your word we need your voice to be heard we need you to be speaking and we need obedient resp responsive hearts Lord may we be guided by you and guarded by Your Word so that the sin that crutches at our

Hearts would be overcome through the strength you supply so Speak Lord we ask and help us to learn through Christ we pray amen so we’re just going to make our way through this uh little SE C of Genesis 4:16 verses and simply if you want to follow along you you’ll know how far

We’ve got and as we start the chapter we discover that Adam and Eve have been cursed by their sin and cast from the garden for the first time in their experience death would become known to them that was the Judgment that God had for their sin and yet the chapter does

Not begin with death death and despair but with a delight of a delivery the arrival of new life and this chapter is a chapter of firsts and here we see the account of The First Family Edition Genesis 4 and verse one now Adam knew Eve his wife and she conceived and bore K

Saying I’ve gotten a man with the help of the Lord it’s helpful for us to understand that the the Book of Genesis is the the Launchpad for the rest of scripture and and what you find over and over again are are key themes being H set before

You that will be developed as you go through the old and and New Testament and and here is one of them that that idea of knowing we we read a lot about knowing god and knowing in the scriptures and notice here that that knowing is not just having some head

Knowledge because Adam knows Eve and and a baby is born this is a an an intense and a a deep intimate relationship that they had Adam knew his wife he had that intimate relationship with her and so we are to have such an intimate relationship with

God and maybe you can begin to imagine what that might have been like for even those days as this baby grew in her womb no no one had ever experienced this before there was no Midwife to give helpful guidance and then there was that terrible experience of the pain of

Childbirth which must have been to her a very Vivid reminder of the words of God in condemning her sin while still in Ed it but more than that surely she she thought about the story of redemption that had been announced in in Genesis 3 and in a sense her part in it

God had said that the seed of the woman the child who would be born would redeem his people from the curse and even as you look at this little speech that that Eve makes I produced a man with the help of the Lord there’s there’s a a a sense in which he

Almost understands that that’s about what’s about to happen she’s given birth and and maybe this is the baby that that God spoke of the seed of the woman and what we realize is that although that free access of Adam and Eve into the garden and that H time they

Spent in fellowship with God is is now broken by their sin it’s clear that their relationship with God has not been fitly suffered for Eve is quick to testify that this baby has come about because God is in it she acknowledges God’s work and and we need to be

Reminded again that that God is at work in every birth every child who’s born into this world is a miracle a gift from God and she calls the baby Keen which has that idea of being gotten or or being created and no sooner does one come that

We find that another follows on with the birth of Abel and Abel’s name sounds like the Hebrew word AEL which you find at the start of Ecclesiastes it means something something that’s shortlived like a vior and you know it says meaningless meaningless Vanity Vanity aail Avail says the writer of

Ecclesiastes did they know evel’s life would be shortlived we don’t know but they called him ail something that’s not very permanent and these two sons fulfill particular purposes Genesis 215 if you look back there you see that the Lord God put the man took the man and put him

In the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it and we’re having time to really delve into all this but that those two words to work it and keep it are are really important words in the Bible they are in Hebrew to avad and to Shamar to

Work and to keep it’s what the priests and Levites did as they served in Tabernacle and tble they worked and kept it that same language is used and so we discover that Ken worked he he cultivated the ground Abad and Eble guarded the flocks Shamar and these two young men take

Often different career paths and even in that there’s the first inklings of of something we’re going to see throughout the Book of Genesis and indeed in the Bible the inklings of this story of Brotherly hatred a topic recurring in ishmail and Isaac and and Esau and Jacob and Joseph

And all the rest of his brother and what has happened is that a fracturing of relationship on the vertical plane between man and God will ultimately and inevitably lead to fracturing fracturing of relationships on the horizontal plane again another motive that occurs here that we see throughout the Old

Testament until the coming of Jesus every firstborn son is a failure any of the sons who who gain Credit in the Old Testament not one of them was a firstborn son so you see how when Jesse’s sons are lined up and Samuel comes to pick a king

He has to pick the very bottom of the list and ruon was the eldest of Jacob’s sons but it’s Joseph who who gains the honor and Judah the one through whom the family line of Kings comes so there’s this Motif and again you can’t follow up all of these but they’re all springing

Out of these passages in the opening chapters of Genesis so we read that the kind of the first birth and then we uh read the kind of The First Family Worship oh children are gifts from God and all children are worshipper not everyone worships God but everyone worships something verses 3 to

5 in the course of time probably the harvest season when hearts are turned to giving thanks to God for his Rich provision Ken brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the gr and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat

Portions and the Lord had regard for eel and his offering but for Ken and his offering he had no regard so Ken was very angry and his face fell and as you read this you you’re almost discomforted because it seems that for some reason God is playing favorites

He’s being unfair he’s being capricious he’s he’s choosing one and rejecting the other and in his Sovereign wisdom God chooses Eble and he acknowledges his offering as being of wor and he rejects Ken and he dismisses the value of the offering he presents calling it unacceptable and in spite of the best

Efforts of all kinds of uh Bible scholars no one knows why yes some people speculate there’s a hint here that that Abel brought of the very best of his flock of the the the firstborn their fat portions and people extrapolated from that and suggest well K didn’t he just

Picked up any old thing and brought it along to God and so God uh rejected it for that reason but there’s nothing here in the text to suggest that others say well of course Abel’s sacrifice necessitated the shedding of blood so so that made it worthy and uh keans didn’t

Have blood involved so of course that must be the reason but but there’s nothing again here to suggest that if you look down at the text you’ll see that what God seems to be most interested in is not the the sacrifice the offering but the individual the

Person it says the Lord had regard for Abel and I think that’s really the the key to understanding what’s going on here you see as we make our approach to God as we bring our offerings to him it really doesn’t matter that much what is in our hands because God is really concerned

About what is in our hearts the writer to the Hebrews highlights this the rightness of Abel’s heart he puts it like this the words that we read at the start of our service Hebrews 11:4 by faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Ken through which he was commanded as

Righteous God commanding him by accepting his gifts and through his fearth though he died he still speaks primarily worship is a matter of the heart it’s not what’s in your hands it’s what’s in your heart that really coms do you remember David as he confessed to God and acknowledged his

Sin before him in that well-known 51st Psalm he says this in verses 16 and 17 for you will not Delight in sacrifice or I would give it you will not be pleased with a burnt offering the sacrifices of God are a broken Spirit a broken and contrite heart oh God you will not

Despise so what does God want from us well he wants our hearts to be submissive to him that’s what he looks for in a worshipper and you know there there are probably many but there are at least three different motivations that people have as they approach God In

Worship some people come to God and they they their their aim is manipulation if if I give this to God then then God will owe me and he’ll do what I want cuz I have given him my gift some people think they can manipulate God they come with their intent being

Manipulation others simply come to worship because it’s obligation I give to God because I have to it’s my job Judy it’s it’s mere religion but what God really seeks is those who come in adoration but I give my God I give my worship to God because he is worthy of

My praise all I have I ought to make available to him manipulation obligation adoration it’s good for each one of us to check our hearts as to why we come to worship self-examination is a precursor to to right worship Paul writes this in 1 Corinthians 11:28 the third thing we need to see

Here is we have the first account of we read the account of The First Family Feud God accepts ael’s offering and rejects Kens and Ken is depressed he’s upset said he’s angered because he estimates his worth in comparison with his brother that’s what causes so much of

The world’s misery in these days that that we run around comparing ourselves to other people and that either makes us happy or sad and young people and there are some here tonight and they know all about this because they live in the the comparison culture they live with this thing called Instagram

Envy your brother had more likes on his post than you so you want to kill him and that’s a little bit like what happened here in keenen’s heart but it doesn’t have to be that way that’s not how we have to live if you can imagine after our service you’re in

The coffee area you’ve got your cup of coffee you turn around and somebody bumps into you what spills out of your cup thanks thank you somebody’s still awake that’s good yeah coffee spills out of your cup because coffee is in it and someone else might have had a part to

Play and they bumped into you but the spill age H what happens what spills is what’s in and so whenever we take the knocks in life whatever they might be whenever things don’t go our way what comes out of our Lives is what’s already inside so James writes James writes

These words to Believers to the church James 41:4 this is to the church he says what causes quarrels and what causes fights among you is it not this that your passions are at War within you you desire and do not have so you murder you covet and cannot obtain so

You fight and quarrel you do not have because you do not ask you ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly to spend it on your passions you adulterous people do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God therefore whoever wishes to be a friend

Of the world makes himself an enemy of God James writes that to the church and Yahweh the Covenant making God may have disregarded Cain’s offering here but he didn’t disregard Ken verses six and seven the Lord said to Ken why are you angry and why has your face

Fallen if you do well will you not be accepted and if you do not do well sin is crouching at the door door its desire is for you but you must rule over it Ken is sucking he’s pting and God comes to him and he speaks to him words

Of witness and words of warning and tragically instead of grasping this opportunity for self-examination and the questioning of his heart under the influence of God’s word k hardens his heart and it becomes a fertile grind for the cultivation of murderous sin literally verse seven says if you do

What is right you can turn that front upside down and the Lord here doesn’t doesn’t challenge Kain about the inappropriateness of his offering but about the anger in his heart and that is the key battle grind here and just as you look look back into chapter 3 one of the consequences of the

Fall was that Eve would want to dominate her husband Genesis 3:16 it says your desire shall be for your husband literally she would want to control him and dominate him and immediately we see here that God speaks of the the the heart of sin for Kean sin wants to

Dominate and control Ken’s heart its desire is for you at once to rule over you God speaks to Ken he says Ken sin is in you but it is not you the Lord warns the people of his people in Deuteronomy 2918 through the words of Moses he said

Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit God says make sure these these roots don’t take hold of your hearts because they will consume you they will destroy life Moses continues to bring the Lord’s message in Deuteronomy 318 he says see

I’ve set before you today life and good death and evil and God comes and he speaks to K and he says exactly the same thing he says look you have a choice here Ken you do not have to yield to sin you can be a VI victim or you can be a

Victor you don’t have to yield to sin’s control in your life again you remember Paul comes and he writes in 1 Corinthians 10:13 saying no temptation has forsaken you or overtaken you sorry that is not common to man God is faithful and he will not let you be tempted beyond your

Ability but with the Temptation he will also provide the way of Escape so that you may be able to endure it there’s a way out for Ken he doesn’t have to yield to sin he can listen to God and accept his word and Obey it it’s almost as though he were

Standing before two trees and he can choose the tree of knowledge of good and evil or the tree of life and he makes the wrong choice joy and there’s no tempter here there’s no one to whom he can look and point the finger and blame but now in the weake of the fall

This conion has entered into every heart we are all infected and affected by sin and we need to appreciate and appropriate the word of God that speaks to guide and guard us against its power when God speaks us we need to learn and and listen and and so

Live Jesus challenged the crows in in John 8 43 and 44 he said it’s because you cannot bear to hear my word you are off your father the devil and your will is to do your father’s desires he was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the

Truth because there is no truth in him Ken may have been a child of Adam and Eve but in these moments as he hardens his heart to God’s word and rejects its truth he shows himself to be a child of the devil you can choose you can change your attitude you can overcome

Temptation if you listen to God’s word and Obey it but tragically Ken did did not so we read the account of the first murderer or in this case frat side some versions not the ESV but some uh make the premeditation of kian’s um actions here so very clear where he says

Let let’s go out to the field let let let’s go where where no one can see us not as that there was a lot of people to be Witnesses but but K made sure that no one else would see his eye and once he believes he’s out of sight

He strikes and kills his brother but of course we know there is always at least one witness of every action and in the garden God had promised that that that message of Hope the story of redemption that this one who would be the seed of the woman would

Would crush the head of the serpent and undo the curse of sin and maybe as I said at the start Maybe Adam and Eve thought this is the one this is the promise God has sent us a deliverer but rather we discover that H this boy

That was born to him doesn’t crush the head of the serpent but he crushes the head of his brother he does the work of The Serpent and again here’s a story that that’s followed through from Genesis to Revelation how the the the children of the devil are against the the the the

The children of God seeking to kill them to put them to death how Pharaoh Took The Offspring of God’s people and cast them into the aisle or or how Herod came to wipe out the babies born in Bethlehem The Offspring of the serpent trying to crush the head of the offspring of the

Woman dric bover asked the question why does Ken murder and then he offers this chilling answer to his own question he says out of hatred for God again Psalm 51 verse four David said against you and you only have I sinned and done what is

Evil in your sight so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment Ken kills his brother but the big issue for Ken was God’s rejection God had feared his brother and Ken could not accept it verse n God speaks to him and says where is able your

Brother when people fall into sin God comes asking questions when Adam and Eve fell into sin God came and said where are you have you eaten he comes now says Kean where is your brother and God is asking these questions not because he needs the information but to open open up the

Opportunity for the recipient of the question to turn to repentance but rather than being defent Ken is defiant and he responds with disdain am I My Brother’s Keeper the answer to this has to be yes you are but like his parents before him he wants to deflect the blame deny his

Responsibility but in the presence of the the Holiness of God that’s simply not possible it can’t be done verses 10 11 the Lord said what have you done the voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground and now you are cursed from the ground which has

Opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand the voice of your brother’s blood crying to me from the ground this is another huge biblical theme here of blood and life being tied together and both of these being God’s possession they belong to God the blood here is crying out for

Vengeance but instead God offers Mercy because that’s God’s heart that’s his nature later Genesis 9 we’ll see how death is the appropriate punishment for murder but not here and Ken is anxious and fearful Old Testament scholar Walter bugman comments the Killer and I fears to be killed the killer has no resources

Of his own but must cast himself upon the mercy of the lifegiver and such a mercy a mark asserting both guilt and grief God God sets a mark on Ken we have no idea what that is and having been marked apart and protected by this Ken chooses to walk

Away from God and even as he does we see how God continues to offer his Mercy to him gives him Grace and forgiveness God gives him a mark a sign of divine compassion a token of God’s care for him I’m sure some of you have heard of

Adoniram Judson he was born in 1788 the son of a pastor but when he got into his teens he decided he would abandon his faith he would become an atheist and and live a a Carefree a wild life it’s very interesting when people want to live a wildlife they they they stop believing

In God because it makes it so much easier and he was studying at br University and while he was there he met a friend who became a a sort of soulmate to him Jacob e who like uh Judson had opted to throw off religious shackles and live that same debauched

Lifestyle and through their studies the two young men supported each other in their wild Pursuits and when Adan Judson graduated decided to tour around the world and and seek its pleasures live life to the full and and one evening he he arrived in New York City and it was very late at night

And he he struggled to find any accommodation but he came to little in and they had one room but the manager said now you need to be wor why there is still one room left there’s a man in the Next Room to you and he’s critically ill he’s in the the

Throws of death and he’s likly to disturb you but Johnson this last chance took the room and he he didn’t sleep at all that night cuz he could hear the terrible cries of Agony coming through the thin walls from the room beside him next morning uh he inquired of the

Clerk at at the front desk what had happened to the gentleman in the room beside him and learned that he had passed away and Judson was dismissive he was an atheist these things happen that’s that’s simply life and then he said what was the man’s name only to discover that this man was

Jacob e the person who had died in terrible Agony in the room beside him that night had been his faithful friend of years before his best friend in college days and in that moment Adam Aram judson’s life was turned around and most importantly turned back

To Christ and he gave the rest of his days serving God in the mission field in Burma modern day Myanmar yes for a Time Judson had given up on God but God did not give up on him and here’s the hope of the story that there’s a God who despite our

Depravity does not give up on us he’s the God who shows up over and over again here in the life of Ken and over and over again in your life he he made k for better purposes than he chose for himself to the best of our knowledge Ken

Spent the rest of his days wandering living a Restless life constantly H attacked and ass sealed by his anxiety he could not find peace because he had distan himself from God there is no peace there is no Shalom for the wicked because the path of sin and the Exile

From God that they impose upon themselves means they cannot know peace but there is hope Hebrews 12:24 tells us of Jesus the mediator of a New Covenant and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel Abel’s blood was crying out from

The ground for vengeance but but Jesus blood shed on calvary’s Cross is crying out the offer of forgiveness to all who will believe Jesus blood is a better testimony there is hope in him there is salvation in him yes Kean Enders ends up wandering far

Away living in the Life a land of n a life of sin and depravity but it doesn’t have to be that way for anyone there’s never a time when you cannot turn back to God even if you stray and sin you can always find your way home to the father and he will

Always welcome you why because the blood of Jesus Christ speaks a better word it speaks of God’s Redeeming Grace for you it can cleanse your life from any sin so it may it be that as God’s word is spoken you receive it you respond to

It you live a life that desires to obey it so that you will find the best life possible and live life not far from God but knowing him loving him serving him each day he sets before you let’s pray together father we come to you because

You are the only one who can make sense of these lives that we live yes Lord there is a world out there that has cleverly contrived lots of ways presents sin as very attractive to us it’s crouching at the door of our heart Hearts it’s Desiring to consume us

To drag us down into death Lord we pray for grace to sustain us and to help us to live to please you even in a world that seems all around us to be running far from you fleeing into deeper and darker sin as each day passes may we listen learn and live as

We heed your word may we find the blood of Jesus Christ cleansing us from all unrighteousness forgiving us giving us peace in our hearts and fellowship with you but lasts through this life and as sweeter by far beyond in the Name of Christ we pray amen we’re going to sing together this

Is my desire this is my desire to You Lord with all all my heart I worship You all I have within me I give you praise all that I adore is in you Lord I give you my heart I give you my Soul I live for you alone every breath that I take every moment I’m a lord have your way in me desire to horor you Lord with all my heart I worship You all my heart within me I give you praise all that I adore is You Lord I give you my heart I give you my soul I live for you alone every breath that I take every moment I’m Awake your in me We continue our worship as we bring our offering to God Let’s pray together father we come to you because in you is life Everlasting without you there is no hope no help for us so may our hearts be receptive to you and be eager to serve and worship you as we should receive these gifts that we present to you night

And may our heart Hearts be right with you as we get Lord we come and we pray for our world in need and we do pray Lord for those who find these days difficult in our own land there are people finding pressures of rising costs and reduced

Incomes and we know in the world there are people who go hungry because of failed crops and mismanaged governments Lord we ask that each would know your Rich supply for their needs and have reason to rejoice in you give us wisdom as we seek to use the resources we have individually and

Nationally to help and support others in an appropriate way father we do pray for our youth organizations and activities in our congregation we pray that through this Christmas season you protect our young people and as the leaders seek to encourage and guide them may they see many young people coming to know Jesus

And live for him bless every activity that is organized here during the weekend be at the heart of it Lord and may it bear fruit for eternity Lord we do pray for our local schools we pray for Boards of Governors for principls for staff that together Lord we would find good influence for

God being brought to bear on lives we realize Lord in these days that the landscape is changing with people from all over the world coming into our schools and different cultures and backgrounds but may the good news of of Jesus Christ be presented effectively and in a way that is Winsome bless suus

As they seek in school to help and encourage young believers in their walk with God and be at the heart of all these activities Lord we do pray for our Health Service in trying times and as uh the winter approaches Lord May uh the staff there who are hard pressed find uh

Just the rest they need and may uh the already backlogged waiting lists not be uh insurmountable Lord we pray that you would enable our our Health Service to survive a a difficult season of of of illness and emergency Lord we do pray protection on our roads where we seen so many injuries

Over uh recent weeks and again guide everyone as they go out into dark wet windy nights and keep them safe as they travel give them wisdom to follow the road signs and to take appropriate caution and Lord may we know your leading and may we serve you well may we find as

Each day comes an opportunity to make much of Jesus just a word to be spoken about him an example to be shown a a a care and concern to be given Lord help us to be faithful Witnesses for Christ in these days wherever we will spend

This week so we ask and pray all these things in the name of Jesus Amen going to close to Together As we sing come thy F of Every Blessing every blessing to my heart to sing th praise streams of Mercy never ceasing call for S ofest PR Teach Me by fling Tong praise the F upon it the I my heaven here great help and I hope by my good pleasure safely to our home Jesus s me when I Stray wondering from the of from nature me with his Precious to Grace great bily I constrained to be let th goodness like a find mying heart to to wonder Lord I feel it to I here’s my heart SE it seal it for th of and tonight May grace mercy and peace from Father Son and Holy Spirit be with
