Hi uh good morning my name is Jasmine Hardy I am the assistant director of fraternity and sorority life in the center for student engagement activities and Leadership and welcome to the culturally based uh fraternity Authority intake and and recruitment webinar
So I’m going to take you through a few slides that are just going to talk about our culturally based organizations and then also about how your student um if they are interested how they will go about expressing interest and also join our community and speaking of
Our community we are a community of 5,000 plus students across 52 chapters and four councils and to just share a bit about our councils um like I mentioned we have four first starting off with our inter fraternity Council IFC which is 24 all men fraternities
That are recognized nationally we also have our Multicultural Greek council also known as mgc which is four organizations all recognized nationally and then we also have our National panhel Council nphc which is three sororities and four fraternities all recognized nationally and we
Also have our panhellenic association panhellenic for short um which is 18 all women sororities who are also recognized nationally and so today for our culturally based organizations I’m going to be highlighting about our Multicultural Greek Council and our National PanhelCouncil but also
Wanted to start off with just sharing what is a culturally based um fraternity organization um culturally based fraternal organizations or cbfo are social organizations that are aligned towards special interests in a culture or cultural identity um so therefore the ones
That I’ll mention today a lot some of them are historically African-American um which therefore founded by African-American college age students during their time um others are historically Latin X or historically founded by Jewish students um the list goes on so so that’s
What it means to be culturally based um again anchoring in culture or a cultural identity however despite of the historical foundings of uh cbfo membership is open and welcome to all racial and cultural identities so there is no um cut off or you don’t have to identify
With a certain culture or a cultural identity to express interest and potentially join any of these organizations so first I’m going to highlight our Multicultural Greek Council um as I mentioned before we have four organizations that are recognized nationally Alpha Epsilon 5 sorority
Alpha silanda National Fraternity Incorporated which is a co-ed uh fraternity uh Sigma Lambda Gamma National sorority Incorporated which is a historically Latin x uh sorority but has transitioned into a multicultural uh sorority and we also have Thea newai Multicultural sorority
Incorporated and um we are expanding our council um by welcoming Delta Capa Delta Incorporated in the spring of 24 and they are a South Asian um oriented service sorority so we’re definitely looking forward to opening that those doors for that new organization to join our
Community next up we have the National PanhelCouncil um the National PanhelCouncil um its history is that it is the umbrella for a total of nine historically African-American fraternities and sororities um therefore meaning that they all have a history of being founded
By African-American students on various campuses some of them being historical black colleges and universities or predominantly white institutions also known as pwi Miami University is fortunate to have seven chartered um NPC recognized organizations we have uh four fraternities Alpha 5 Alpha Fraternity Incorporated Capal Alpha SI Fraternity Incorporated Omega SciFi Fraternity
Incorporated and F Sigma fraternity Incorporated with our sororities we have Alpha Capa Alpha soorrity Incorporated Delta Sigma Theta sorority Incorporated Zeta beta sorority Incorporated and in the spring of 24 um the council is looking to welcome Sig gamar Ros who already Incorporated
Again who is part of the national umbrella of nphc so we are they’re not officially chartered on our campus but we are looking for them to be chartered by the end of spring 24 so across the board um regardless of the council so from IFC mgc MC and panhellenic um
As a community we have base requirements for all interested me uh potential new members um no matter what year no matter uh the organization this is is our base of requirements and policies so academic standing um the student must have completed one full-time fall or spring semester
So therefore for example if it is a first semester first year student they could not join um any of our organizations um until the spring um we have a great requirement of a 2.5 minimum cumulative
GPA some chapters um do require higher so some may say You must have a 2.6 or 2.75 um but our base is 2.5 but we do go by what the national headquarters of that organization may say for membership students must have um 12 college credit hours um from Miami University or another credited
University um that does not include any um AP credits or any credits they may have received in high school has to be from Miami University or another accredited University um during their time of being a enrolled student students that are um also interested in joining our community um must
Complete an online hazing prevention and education module um we sent out that information to them um for them to complete so that they may be fully prepared and truly understand also um safe practices and what does um hazing prevention mean and what does that look like for our community
Across the board intake also occurs at the discretion of each chapter so um for mgc and nphc this looks a little bit different compared to IFC and panhellenic um there is not a set formal set
Of days that are mgc MCG sorry mgc chapters and nphc chapters um conduct their intake um it is to the discretion of each chapter um they are allowed to choose when they want to do intake so some may
Do it in the fall and some may do it in the spring or they may do both um but it really relies on what their national headquarters um allows them to do and we help facilitate that um intake so
Again it’s not a formal set date or days um of the Academic Year it can occur either in the fall or the spring or both and also of completed required membership intake packet so mgc chapters and nphc
Chapters get a membership intake packet that they must fill out on behalf of our office letting us know their dates of when they’re going to conduct membership and also who um has been verified and approved to uh join their organization so there’s a lot of uh communication with our office and also
The chapters and also their guiding headquarters to talk about their intake um practices and process and to touch a bit on uh colins law hazing prevention and Reporting um the university um and abides by the Ohio state law that hazing is not condoned it is not
Accepted um and failure to report or intervene may also constitute a violation um Collins law is a newly um upheld law in the state of Ohio where there’s a lot of requirements now of Institutions like Miami and across the state um that we are very CED and open
About any violations that may come across on campus um that we provide the hazy prevention education for our students before they join our organizations and that they are continued to be educated as well and then that there are harsher penalties um for those that uh conduct
Hazing and for those that are knowledgeable um this QR code on the screen will take you to our landing page to learn more about um our steps about within Collins law and the Ohio state
Law and then also what we do as a university to uphold um these rules and regulation set by the state and also the extra precautionary things that we do as an office to make sure again that everybody is educated and well aware that hazing is not condoned here at Miami
University so now I’m going to touch on a little bit about expressing interest and joining a chapter um these are kind of one and the same but there are various steps um that your student should consider when they want to express interest and potentially join a chapter within mgc and
Nphc so first expressing an interest in a culturally based organization um is highly encouraged that your student does research there’s no formalized recruitment structure so again there aren’t set dat days like again compared to like IFC and Panhel where your student can just can
Come express interest learn about everyone um but we highly suggest that research is done about the National Organization check out their website see what that organization is all about at its core and then to also do any research that um you can with the actual chapter that’s on campus we also
Highlight encourage students to get involved um follow the chapters on social media follow the organ the overall council on social media as well our students do a lot of posting about events and programs and anything that they may want the community to know they do that a lot
On social media particularly on Instagram um also our community is a very big thriving community and huge on programming and doing events that bring uh people out to whether it’s about scholarship whether it’s about being educated on a certain topic if it’s for some social aspect there are
A lot of programs and events that are chapters that I mentioned before that they do across the whole Academic Year to get people out and engaged in the community and engage with them um so if your a student wants to express interest I highly suggest going to these programs and and events um
We don’t say go to everything because they are students first and they have other interests and passions but um attending the programs and attending the events the students will notice and then they that’ll be a nice way for them to know that this person may be interested in
Our organization um nphc and mgc they both host seminars where students can come and learn a lot more about the chapters on campus is and also what the overarching um meaning and purpose is of each Council so these are really great ways for your student to again dive a little bit more
Get a lot more information ask certain questions um that they may be uh not too sure to ask or at least get some um answers from students that are currently serving in these chapters and serving in
These leadership roles with our community and last but not least but um engage with the members uh we love students to again come to the programs and engage that way but also talk and make friends um
The students that are part of these organizations they are students too um they did not come to school already being Greek and knowing all things so um but they are really big on community and building friendships first be uh way before they even start to talk about their organizations um
But they recognize that this is a community thing and that they also are looking for people that just want to connect and also to um make the most out of their college experience here at Miami so talking about joining a culturally based organization it looks different across
The board for all organizations within mgc and nphc but these three boxes will kind of share the overarching um steps that happens when once the student has expressed interest and want to and and has made a decision to really pursue membership um with a particular organization
So first there is a formal informational Rush um a formal informational or Rush is the organization’s initial beginning steps of intake for potential new members it is an opportunity for aspirants to learn more about the organization and the chapter of Interest um so therefore this is all
Meaning that there’s um probably more deeper sharing out of what it means to be a member of this particular organization what are some requirements that aren’t really usually shared out to the public um I know I mentioned about like a nphc seminar or mgc seminar but that is
A lot of high level things kind of highlighting like this is what we value and things of that nature but a formal informational Rush will really get to the nitty gritty and to the Deep core of each organization um at that point after that there will be application and interviews U
Most organizations require for an application to also verify if this one of the student is enrolled actually enrolled in school have the required GPA that the National Organization requires and a lot of other different steps that um organizations may need upon that application
And then after applications are submitted and reviewed um an invitation for an interview is offered so again once things are um reviewed and things check off um fine um organizations will discuss and um offer interviews to those that they will all uh talk more about with
About joining their organization and after the interviews the there is an invitation and then new member education begins um organizations review all aspirant and decide on who to an extent an official invitation to join their organization and once that invitation is
Accepted then new members will move forward with their new member education process um that new member education process again looks different across the board for everybody um and there are a lot of different things that people do again that’s unique to their organization that’s what
Makes a lot of our culturally based ORS here on campus so especially unique because it’s not the same across the board for everybody again these are overarching steps but um Everybody conducts them a little bit different different ways um that again make the chapters unique and
Special so just to touch on a little bit about membership expectations and opportunities so um this is after people have been interviewed after they have been extended invitation um and then they have become members of that organization of that Council um and then ultimately of the
Community here at Miami University so first thing it’s go always going to be a continued uh education process um members of uh mgc and nphc they will go through a new member orientation um that is something that I lead so so that they new members also recognize
Again what they are joining what does it mean to actually be a part of this Council and a part of their organization but also get them up to speed about the community um the expectations that we have of them as members the things that they are now um have access to leadership opportunities
Talking about um ways for them to get engaged and get involved and again make the most out of the experience that they are looking for as they join um our Greek Community second um they will learn about policies and even though they are already students and that
They already have to follow the student code of conduct but now there are more policies and procedures that they need to abide by such as Council constitutions bylaws um learning more in depth about Collins law and hazing uh policies and and the things that come with that
As well so a lot more policies and things to learn about things that they need to be aware of so that they can be outstanding members of our community and third um just knowing that there is support um our office is highly um fortunate to have a very full staff across
The board to make sure that this each student um is supported each chapter is supported each student if they need that individual support as well um they know that they have it in our office and just some expectations of membership um first and foremost we do expect them to be
Students um because that’s what they came to school to be so we do expect them to maintain High um academic academic excellence and working towards the ultimate goal of graduation but we do expect them to be involved in of course in their respective councils whether that’s in mgc or nphc
But as well as other organizations and clubs to build a well-rounded portfolio um we don’t want them to be involved in everything because that’s hard to maintain but we do want them to of course you know stay tapped in with their passions and their interests um even if it’s
Outside of fraternity and sorority life and third uh citizenship giving to the community to their brothers and their sisters and to themselves to strengthen the Miami experience we expect them to be outstanding citizens um but also knowing that they are the ones
Being looked at as by raising the bar um as they represent our community of course we want them to be representing the Greater Community outside of um our 5,000 plus students as well so now I’m just going to transition into just some helpful information um just things to
Know um as students uh join their their chapter of interest um then a PO then uh by default joining the council that’s affiliated with uh that chapter these are just some things that we love for students to know um there is a high demand in commitment and engagement uh for your chapter
And Council um mgc and nphc are the smaller of um two of the smallest councils um across all four um nphc will probably have about um a little less than 30 uh students that are members across
The board in all those organizations and nphc will have about 25 or just a little less than 30 as well so very small chapters um and then therefore a small Council so there is a high demand in commitment and engagement because of those smaller numbers um requirements from
Stakeholders and entities so not just our office um but their National headquarters including their local state State and Regional organization uh leadership there’s a lot of people that need a lot of things um and so it’s very important that they understand that there are a lot of people
That are here for support but also will help their chapter function and run smoothly and we want them to know that they’re not only just joining a chapter but they’re also joining a council um it’s very important that they recognize that because again um with the chapters being small
The council is also small and so is not just your chapter but it’s also Council work that needs to be done too um both councils do an amazing job about making sure that they are also well known
In the community and not just on their separate entities or their Orcs but as a collective that they are strong even though they may be small but they are Mighty and but it’s helpful when everybody knows that there’s Council work to be done as well um some CBF require an amount of
Community service hours for application um so if your student is interested definitely uh be very important for them to start generating some um community service hours because um don’t want to get caught up in being interested and then you don’t have any service hours anywhere um so then
You may that sometimes can be hard to come by depending on what semester and when you decide to express interest um application fees total cost and new member fees very per organization so I do get a lot of questions sometimes about how much how much does joining an organization cost it
Varies across the board from each organization so it is hard to pinpoint an actual number but I usually do say that um I would tell a student to anticipate about 800 to maybe a little over a
Thousand um again that is um those first initial new member fees and then once they do become a member um basically maintaining membership um it’s a lot less than that but those initial fees um can be pretty high in the upper hundreds um and some organizations maybe um over $1,000 and
Then lastly uh the intake process varies for per organizations again some chapters may say hey we’re going to do intake in the fall um and not in the spring or we’re going to do it in the
Spring and not in the fall again that is to their decision and what works best for them of the time in that Academic Year and sometimes some orgs may say we’re not going to do intake at all this year
Um just due to maybe the needs or whatever the chapter may have going on but again it is to it is their decision um when they believe is best to do a intake process for new members but all
In all all those organizations uh amongst U mgc and nphc all organizations honor that um aspirant or potential new members or those of interest um it is a personal decision um when people want to join and so for example like IFC and panhellenic is a bit more public um everybody is going through
The same process and um expressing interest at the same time mgc and nphc those that are interested um in joining or going through the process of joining it is more so kept a a secret because
Then they will do a grand reveal of joining um that organization at the end of their new member process so this is uh something culturally um amongst nphc and mgc and so there therefore for that’s what I mean by um making it a personal decision because there is a grand uh celebration
And reveal um a presentation if you will at the end of that person’s uh new member education process so thank you so much for joining me um in this webinar hopefully um you got a lot of information out of it and there are some questions answered but uh please do
