Marching I think it go something like this we shall overcome every now and then it’s good to remember and ask the question have we really overcome yet or do we need to still be singing that song amen so won’t you join me stand up with you don’t mind let’s sing it
Together amen this time we shall Overcome yes Yes Deep in my heart I do believe we shall overcome I should play a little bit softer I want to hear these voices today we shall anybody from the 60s remember this we shall we shall overcome someday yes yes oh deep in my heart I we shall overcome Son amen amen Genesis chapter 37 begin reading at verse number Five through verse 11 and Joseph dreamed a dream and heo told it to his Brethren and they hated him yet the more and he said unto them here I pray you this dream which I have dreamed for behold we are are we were binding sheaves in the field and lo my sheath arose
And also stood right up and behold your sheaves stood round about and made obedience to my sheath and his Brethren said to him shallal thou indeed Reign Over Us or shalt thou indeed have domination or dominion over us and they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his
Words and he dreamed yet another dream and behold it his Brethren are told it his Brethren and said behold I have dreamed a dream more and behold the Sun and the Moon and the 11 stars made obedience to me and he told it to his father and to his Brethren and his
Father rebuked him and said unto him what is this dream that thou Hast dreamed shall I and thy mother and thy Brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth and the Brethren envied him but his father observed the saying amen I want to talk about this
Morning dreams do come true dreams do come true back in the days of steam ships only rich white people sailed at Sea one day while sailing something suddenly happened to the ship and it was about to sink terrified the white folks aboard didn’t know what to do someone suggested
That they should do what the black folks did pray However unfortunately no one knew what what to say so they called upon John a black cook on the ship and asked him to pray John agreed and came up on Deck to pray he started like this
Lord on the day of hunger I went to a restaurant to get something to eat and the sign said for whites only I went to the water fountain to get water and the sign said for whites only then Lord I went to use the restroom and the sign said for whites
Only so Lord Almighty forgive me because I know this isn’t Christian when this ship sink let it be for white folks only in Jesus name I pray amen funny isn’t it but if you lived in the day when there was segregation everywhere you know what this is like what it’s like to
Go to a restaurant and see a sign that says for whites only or what it’s like to be thirsty and you see a water fountain in sight with the sign above it reads for whites only you know what it’s like to have to go to the restroom really bad but the
Sign above the restroom read for the whites only or you’re catching the bus knowing the humiliation of having to walk all the way to the back of the bus because the front is for whites only thank God that somebody lived amid this era of racism and SE agregation somebody still had a dream
That one day things would be different his name was Martin Luther King Jr Martin King was raised by his parents who taught him that he should treat all people with respect his father worked hard to break down barriers between races he he beli that African-Americans should register their complaints by
Voting as king grew up he found that not everyone followed his P parents’ principles he noticed that he and his white friends could not drink from the same fountains and could not use the same restrooms Martin’s best friends as a child was a little white boy they had no
Problems as they played happily together but when they reach school age the uh the to the same school they going to the same school and after the first day of school these children weren’t allowed to play together again during the 60s and the 70s uh uh I’ve also had my own
Encounter with racial Prejudice though it did not affect me directly uh in my hometown but the blessing of blacks to White schools was the system’s answer to court ordered integration the problem however was that there were no white students being bust into our neighborhoods King’s dream was the
Answer to the prayers of many in society but it would be decades before it would become even a partial reality still he had a dream in the scripture there is another one who also was a big dreamer his name Joseph in 37 of Genesis it reads Verses 3- 4 not Israel or you
Remember that was the name for Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other Sons because he had been born to him in his old age and he made him a coat of many colors when his brothers saw that the father loved him more than his Brethren they hated him and could not
Speak peaceably unto him whenever Joseph’s father wasn’t around I believe in my Sanctified imagination that he really got picked on so ju Joseph knew the pain if you will of being hated even though he couldn’t control the fact that his father loved him more Genesis 375
Says Joseph dreamed a dream so I came to tell you the first thing to qualify one as a dreamer is that a dreamer must have a dream most of us our nightly dreams probably amount to deep down wishes and desires or as my mother would say you ate too late last
Night most of our dreams were probably nothing more than vivid imaginations during our sleep but Joseph and King are in a class that I consider and refer to as Visionaries these Visions are encounters with God are used to impart special Revelations often intuitively in dreams are dark
Sayings uh according to numbers 12 and 6 sometimes visitors can also use and Visions can also be theophanies where God speaks directly to the Visionary when a person is awake and alert like King’s dream of equality of mankind this class would also include the Old Testament prophets which kept
The people of God informed as to the will and the actions of the Divine now and I’m not implying that God can’t give you a dream or a vision doing your sleep as he did Joseph but remember the focus of such is the future do you believe that there is something ahead in
Your life that God is calling you to or to be or to be do you envision that God is using you to make an impact in some way in the lives of others if you’re going to be a dreamer you have to have a dream Joseph’s dream is found in verses
6 through 11 and his dream was that one day his father his mother and his brothers would one day bow down before him and that means Joseph would one day rule over them this dream infuriated his brothers or even more so verse eight says shalt thou indeed Reign Over Us or
Shalt thou indeed indeed have dominion over us they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his word in other words it’s one thing you can have a dream but you ain’t got to tell me about it so second the characteristic a second characteristic of a dream is that
Dreamers are often times hated because of their dreams Joseph was already disliked because his father loved him more and then he’s having these dreams of ruling over his brothers and parents which makes him even more hated there’s a jealousy because Joseph’s Invision something that goes against the grain of
That everyday reality for Dr King there was hatred toward him because of the color of his skin and his dream of equality for all not everyone liked the fact that someone was challenging the way things were and had been Martin Luther King King’s dream led to boycotts and many challenges to the unjust
Society he lived in and many hated him all the more because of it you know I think of the many black athletes who had dreams of playing in the pros and were the first to break into the sport on that level the outright hatred they face
Because of the dream they had of playing a sport that God had gifted them to play yes sir uh just like the white players who knows how many Michael Jordan’s caliber athletes there were how many Jim Browns or Walter pton or Venus and Serena Williams Barry Bonds Lisa
Lesie Jerry wries there were out there a whole list of other names that would be mentioned in this category if only given the opportunity to play yes sir we we here were blessed to witness the election of the first black president of the United States what should you get ready for
Opposition as many people will not like the idea of you having that kind of a dream some opposition will come from your own family some of us would even say you better not make them folks mad remember that the dreamer will always face opposition and even be hated
Because of their dream in the midst of hatred there are those that will keep in mind what your dream is about if you look at verse 11 his brothers were jealous of him but his father kept the matter in mind there will always be those people that will consider or think
About or even support the dreamer to see the dream fulfilled there will be those for whom uh there will be those who will be against you that with those who are before you is just a fact of life and Reverend Dr King had many supporters even in the face of intense hatred
Joseph’s brothers were so angry with him verse 19 and 20 and they said to one another behold here comes that dreamer ah let us slay him cast him into some pit and we’ll say some evil Beast have come and divide him we shall see what will become of his
Dream Judah convinced one of uh Joseph’s older brothers convinced his brothers not to kill their brother but to sell him to the Israelites who took Joseph to Egypt and he became a slave in a household of a man named Piper the Lord was with Joseph
The Bible says and he was put in charge of Piper’s entire household Joseph was um uh how should I say wellb built handsome young man and everybody took note of that even Piper’s wife began to take notice of Joseph I believe she’d do like the brothers usually do when he’d walk by
She check him out amen she pleaded with Joseph day after day to go to bed with her but Joseph refused one day when Joseph and Piper’s wife were in the house alone she grabbed him pleaded with him to go to bed with her this is The Young and the rest is in
The Bible now is uh but Joseph the Bible says runs we need to take notes from Joseph put on some track shoes but but the scriptures say he leaves his cloak behind evidence that the lady amen uses as she cries rape and Joseph is put in prison where the king’s prisoners are
Confined it brings me to my third characteristic of a dreamer and that is that dreamer’s dreams often are contradictory dreamer’s dream even when their everyday reality contradicts the outcome of the dream is really something of Amazement what I’m saying is that even though there is no evidence at all
That this dream will become a reality dreamers still dream I hope y’all with me Joseph was one of the youngest of his brothers had no position in which he would which would warn him to even think that this dream would even come true nothing in his everyday reality would tell us that
His dream had possibilities Martin King lived in a time when there was so much hatred and Chaos between the races black people were treated unjustly at every turn the government one which was founded supposedly on all people being created equal and life liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all some people
Actually sanction and enforce crooked rules and you tell me that Dr King’s presid reality wasn’t in direct opposition to his dream there was little to reveal that one day there would be equality for all and that all blacks and whites would one day be able to get along in society
Together young people if there are any here in the house your dream may be to be the first one in your family to go graduate from college to become some great professional some great uh philosopher in time no one in your family has ever succeeded to that kind of a level listen stay
Focused don’t let nobody make fun of your dream because dream is dream and even when there isn’t a lot of evidence of that dream being fulfilled you got to know that With God all things are possible someone may dream of being married and having a family that stays
Together even though you grew up in a home that was ravaged by divorce and a society that doesn’t take marriage and family seriously keep the dream alive because dream is dream and even when they when when their current circumstances may not affirm that dream they still dream dream of owning your
Own business dream of being a professional athlete dream of writing a book being a singer a pastor a doctor even being the first of of more than other black presidents current circumstances may say no to you but listen all things are possible with Christ Joseph was hated sold into slavery by his brothers
Falsely accused of rape and now in jail as an innocent man what does this tell you about the dreamer well that’s the fourth characteristic and that is that dreamers go through much suffer uffing and pain to see the dream fulfilled Joseph had done no wrong to deserve any of the circumstances that he
Was fasting facting the dreamer will fa many trials Martin Luther King also faced pain and suffering you heard the children tell about his many nights in the jail house amen hated St stabbed arrest jailed water hosed tear gazed treated as less than a human being all
Of this tells me that the dreamer has to face much pain and suffering to see the dream fulfilled sir people the Fulfillment of the dream is worth the price that must be paid to see that the dream become reality I’m going to say that again the Fulfillment of the dream
Is is worth the price worth the cost that must be paid to see the dream be fulfilled in other words if your dream is something that God has put in place expect some hits and some bumps in the road some knocks on the head to see the
Dream fulfilled with any dream there’s a price to be paid someone once said successful people understand that no one makes it to the top in a single bound what true what truly sets them apart is their willingness to keep putting one foot in front of the other no matter how rough
The terrain Joseph and Dr King kept putting one foot in front of the other no matter how rough they got focused on in the dream because the dream is in the making today whatever your dream of being are doing is in the Mak it’s in the making today I often talk with yes
Some other folks talk about that they had some great dreams but their dreams had water poured on them listen don’t allow nobody to pour water on your dream if you want to see that dream become reality you got to stay in the game today if you plan to go to college you
Can’t be cutting classes or getting bad grades you may say that one day I dream that God is going to use me in some great way but the question on the floor is what is God doing in your life today to make that dream become a reality you say well I’m thinking about
Coming to church and getting involved no you’ve got to get in the game today in order for your dreams to become a reality amen what if Dr King would have said I have a dream that one day there will be Justice and equality for all but he sat around watching football all day
And did nothing in the present to see that his dream of the future become reality we might as well have pinched him and woke him up because all he would have been doing is dreaming but finally the last characteristic of a dreamer is that the dreamer given by God or the dream given
By God will always be fulfilled Joseph was given the ability to interpret dreams and he was the only one that could give pharaoh who was leader of Egypt in that day the interpretation of his dream as a result Joseph was released from jail placed at second in command of all Egypt tell me
God ain’t up to something and when Joseph’s family was in need of help in Canaan during the time of famine guess where they had to go to go for help yes sir sure enough they had to come to Egypt and guess who’s in charge in Egypt the same name
Joseph who they sold into slavery so Joseph Dream was fulfilled as he reigned and rule over all his family and all of Egypt Joseph was awesome because in this position he didn’t say I told you so like some folk would have done but he forgave his brothers and told them that
He would take care of them and that God had allowed this to happen and allowed him to go through all he went through so that the dream would be fulfilled listen at verse 19 and 20 of Genesis chapter 50 but Joseph said to them don’t be afraid
Am I in the place of God you intended to harm me but God intended it for good to accomplish what is being doing right now which is the saving of many lives Dr King also saw many victories along the Fulfillment of his dream as in 1964 president Lyon Baines Johnson
Signed the Civil Rights Act into law sir it stated that no person in the United States shall on the ground of race color or national origin be excluded from participation in be denied the benefits of or be subject to discrimination on August the 6th 1965 a Voting Rights bill was passed and we
Need to always always keep in mind that Voting Rights bill y’all cuz they’re trying to take it away from us right now it was passed allowing African-Americans to vote Dr King continued his campaign for World Peace he traveled across America to speak out civil about civil rights and the rights of the
Underprivileged he got almost everywhere except Dallas because there was some black folks that tried that kept him out I a I ain’t talking about what I’m talking about no I’m just telling you what I know some of us that kept him from coming into doubt some preachers too I hate to say it
Uh because of filthy lucra I ain’t calling no names many may even question and say well did Dr Dr King’s dream actually seek fruition or did it ever get fulfilled he saw a lot of things but I believe he also saw that the dream would eventually come true April 3rd
1968 hear his words has already been spoken I don’t know what will happen now we’ve got some difficult days ahead but it really doesn’t matter to me now because I’ve been to the Mountaintop and I don’t mind like anybody I would love and like to live a
Long life longevity has its place but I’m not concerned about that now yes sir and I’ve looked over and I’ve seen the promised land yes sir I mean I get there with you but I want you to know right now he said tonight in Memphis Tennessee
That we as a people will get to the promised land so I’m happy tonight he said I’m not worried about about anything I’m not fearing any man my eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord dreamers will and always and forever make an impact in life that is sometime never
Forgotten do you have a dream I ask you or do you have or have you seen a vision Martin Luther King Jr’s death opened up many doors for us as black people and also as a nation although there’s still racism and Prejudice it will always be
Here it is nowhere close to what Dr King faced in his day our dreams can take us to anywhere God would allow us to be trust me when I tell you my dear dreams do come true [Applause] after such a word as that we’re going to open up the doors of the
