We’re going to have Reflections and I’m going to ask that these three individuals would come forth now retired Athens Clark County Sheriff Ira Edwards Jr Linda craves Carl Vincent Institute and lifetime friend if if they would all come yes Elder and um I if we could have one
Representative from the Kappa alpas side fraternity Z Iota chapter from the University of Georgia wonderful all right um sister Linda wonderful now the family has printed here on the program for us two minutes for each individual I think we could perhaps get by with 2 minutes and 27 seconds all
Right that’s Grace that’s Grace um but I do know you know during times like this we have a lot that we want to share but obviously we we want to respect uh all that the family has had to endure so we don’t want to keep them here no longer than necessary so
I’m going to ask every individual who’s on program if you will just be mindful of our time constraints so that we can be a blessing and uh keep it moving all right amen well good afternoon first giv an honor to God who is the head of my life and it is in him
That I move and have my being I have the distinct pleasure of uh telling you a few things about brother maze I knew him as Chief Maze and before I became sheriff I worked along with them over at the police department and there are three takeaways when it comes to my dear
Friend brother Maz first of all when I asked him to come and be my chief Deputy first thing he said he said let me pray about it and the second thing he said J Rome that’s let me talk it over with r how many of you know that a happy wife
Is a happy life and so about five days later after that he he gave me a call and said I prayed about it IRA and U I’ve talked with Roslin and I’ll be happy to be your chief deputy and that was a sigh of relief because I knew that Jean was
Someone that I could trust he was a man of integrity he was a man that loved his family and he was a man that loved God and that was good enough for me secondly he loved the Sheriff’s office there were times when I had my stressful days as a
Sheriff and one of the things that Jean was a master of was coming you down he would often tell me he’ say Sheriff let us not sweat the small stuff the small stuff and he said keep your hands on the steering wheel don’t fan the Flies because you’ll have a wreck Fanning the
Flies and lastly he could make a peacon pie can I get an amen on that one every Thanksgiving and every Christmas uh Gathering that we had at the sheriff’s office he was mandated and that was one thing I mandated Bishop daddy too bring the peacon pies and so he’ll come rolling
In about four five peacon pies and he’ll bring them in and I bring him in my office they say uh one of those mine he said you better get over there before it gets gone because uh they eating it pretty fast so I tell you you know I’m going to
Miss brother maziz I’m going to miss him and uh his his he loved rosin he loved him some rosin there would be times you know he would call me and say Sheriff I’m running a little late he say I’m taking care of Rosen I said do what you have to do chief God
First family second job third in that order so brother Jerome Lesley thank you for sharing him with us he was a cool guy and he loved tennis too by the way thank you and God bless what a celebration of life and what an honor it is to speak on
Behalf of my good friend rosn Louise Moss Mae or Ros as we always knew her she was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and Beyond nice she was kind if you look up kind in the dictionary you’ll see R’s pretty picture there always a kind word about someone
Always looking for the good side it will be all right was a common answer she truly believed that she attracted people to herself because of her kindness when someone came into our office they would speak to her first because she exuded joy and confidence I met rise on the 1st of December
1978 and if there are any young people in the audience congregation that was the last century Ros was firmly established at The Institute of government when I went to work there and she helped me to get settled and thus began a lifelong friendship that I will
Always cherish she was a mentor as well as a friend for a long time we would get to work at the academic bu building on Broad Street at 7:30 and it was a we were on the third floor and it was there was no elevator and we would walk to
Duncan Donuts and on Prince Avenue and back and though we would not buy donuts it was to keep at RS agile and moving keeping her healthy was Paramount we had lunch every day and were always on a diet losing the same five pounds thousands of times one day she wore white to work
Right down to her stockings and that was back when you wore stockings to work and I wore black including the stockings we laughed about that for years for a while she Becky mccy and I would go upstairs on the third floor which was empty and Chang into our
Workout clothes and workout with Jane Fonda I would love to be able to do that again in 1991 the majority of the Institute came together Under One Roof at the Lucy cob building over the years we moved to round RZ and I together from one office to another at some point Ros
And I were in separate separate divisions but we still had lunch together one day she had to have an injection so she called me down to her office and closed the door and she said I need this shot and you’re gonna have to give it to me did I know how to give
Shots no but she got one that day I probably would have walked over hot Cals for R maze but she would never have let me do that somewhere around 2005 my unit moved to Lumin Street and I went back to Lucy cob every day to have lunch with Ross
Because that was a constant for us in 2009 I was diagnosed for the second time with melanoma and she immediately said it’s going to be all right and I asked her how she knew and said she just knewed her faith and the positivity ingrained in her just made her like that
And that’s been 15 years rise loved her Lord at work on Monday mornings we had church we shared our Sunday services and learned from each other she would say that she didn’t go to church for other people or the pastor she went to church for herself also she said you didn’t have to
Clean yourself up to come to the Lord and I just love that she and Jerome had the greatest marriage they deeply loved and respected each other they learned the art of communication and were good at it they took care of each other as well as Roman Leslie their families and their
Friends that cute little Rome was about two and a half years old when Ros was diagnosed and she Dr were advised not to have any more children they had other friends so lesie was born on October the 18th 1980 and this little tiny bundle of joy
Was born a couple of hours after a baby shower that our unit had given her who knew Ro uh Rome and Lesly with the joys of their lives I knew her family fairly well I Patricia the oldest L next in line r the middle child but she didn’t
Have the middle child syndrome she was herself Pete was next and then baby ketta Mrs Moss’s home on Timothy Road was a familiar place to hang out because of this close family this is a hard day but a beautiful day any day would Jesus is a beautiful
Day Ros and Jerome are walking the streets of gold hand in hand knowing everyone will be taken care of and like RZ always said he’ll be all right greetings giving honor to God and our Savior Jesus Christ to the family to the friends and to the
Brothers I want to give a tribute to brother Jean Ma and Mrs Ma I’ve known brother Maz since spring of 1984 that’s when I became a member of cap alasi many of you may not know what cap aasai stands for it stands for achievement in every field of human
Endeavor all right let’s talk about The Mazes brother Maz a graduate of the University of Georgia went on to have a great career as a military man reaching High honors in the armed forces also in his career as a law enforcement officer he reached high levels of leadership but most importantly as a
Member of our fraternity brother Mae never let us down brother Mays not only brought himself he brought his family and they were a part of all of what we did in cap alasi brother Mae was a member of The Zeta aoda chapter and that’s the chapter
That brought him into cap alasa Not only was he a great member of the Zod chapter but he was a great member of the Athens alumni chapter he was dedicated never would we ever have to ask brother maze he would always volunteer as a kapper he was like a big
Brother to me u in our fraternity you get assigned numbers and when you get assigned the number is considered to be your ISM brother Mae was number one let me say that again brother Mae was number one and I had the privilege of being a number one so those were big shoes to
Follow and many brothers know that when you try to follow a Le a legacy like Jean ma it’s hard but not only did I follow him in the fraternity but many of our friends know that Jean loves tennis so naturally I played tennis initially when when we first
Started out there were a lot of beatings and I wasn’t the one giving the beatings I was the one taking the beatings but brother may still even though I wasn’t as skilled as he was he still played with me he had some Fierce battles with his arch enemy Aaron
Herd oh my God I could ride by YMCA on some days it could be 90s something degrees out in the noon of the day and Jean Mays and Aaron her were out there battling I’m talking about battling it out and they were not young men we’re
Not talking about guys 20 30 40 we’re talking about 50 60 and even as close Jean played up until his 70s and we had some Fierce battles over the last few years with a couple of guys who were members of other fraternities one of them sitting back there in the
Back Philip forson and a young man named Michael who was an alpha Phillips or Sigma and me and Jean the kappers being as courageous as we were we took those guys on and there were many days that we lost and there were many days that we won but the Brotherhood and the spirit
And the camaraderie ship that Jean possessed he never lost to the point where he was a bad loser or a sore loser he was always a gentleman at heart and when you talk about a Officer and a Gentleman that was Jean ma but most importantly he was a great man he was a
Great family man even when we played tennis there were times when we played at lay part for championships which Jean was involved in many of the Championships he brought his family out there they cheered him on and most importantly as a man that was the one thing that I truly admire about brother
M he loved his family my god did he love his family and everything that Kappa encompasses he brought his family along with him and he never neglected his family so with that being said I know the brothers uh are very proud of brother Ma and all of his achievements I
Mean we have big shoes to feel in this community with the loss of such a great man but again the brothers will step up Jerome Leslie we know that you loved your father but we loved him as well he will always be remembered as a family man as
A man who loved his wife I’m talking about loved his wife there were times when he came and played tennis and his wife he brought her out there with him I’m gonna say that again he came and played tennis and he brought his wife with him
I can’t say that for a lot of men I can’t say a lot of men would have been as dedicated as he has been and as I grow to be old I want to be just like him my Lord what a role model what a great man with that being said family my
Condolences peace and strength during this difficult time know that the members of cap alai will always be there if you need us don’t hesitate to ask we love love brother Ma and we love the ma family [Applause] amen come on let’s give the three that have already spoken a great big hand
They spoke wonderfully we thank God for them I think they averaged about two minutes in 52 seconds but uh but they all did well it’s a blessing when people people can stand and speak well of you uh uh it’s not like uh heard the story where there was this homegoing
Service and the people guide up and uh because everyone who has spoke thus far they spoke truthfully spoke from the heart again not like the story I heard of this man who passed away and these people got up and they were just saying these incredible things about him and finally
The wife nudged her son and said uh if you would go up there and see if that’s your daddy still in the [Laughter] casket but that is not the case here that is not the case here Jean Mays and sister Raza Mays were just incredible individuals at this time we’re going to
Ask Lieutenant Colonel Philip L Martin uh Sister Rose R hunt and Doris Robinson as well as retired mayor Charles S Nome if they would come and prepare to share with us as well amen all right let’s let’s help the ladies up the steps if we can all
Right amen now I I called three people but I see four are you guys speaking together that’s right all right come on let’s give them a great big hand as they come and share with us [Applause] now so I met uh Master Sergeant Jean Mays in 1996 when I joined the 94th
Airport squadron at Robins Air Force Base he he had been there quite some time in fact he was the first sergeant of the unit when I came in as a as a captain and uh you we worked together for he he retired in 2008 and I stayed
On a little bit past that so know for the the whole time we were there we worked closely on staff together um he was the kind of guy that uh people admired and looked up to him he was a mentor for many of the members
There I know I remember coming in I I would ask people you know you’re new in a squadron you’d ask them what do you do for your job I’m a deputy chief at the Clark County Sheriff’s Department like oh okay that’s great later on in a couple months later
Like the next month we we come once a month to reserves I’d say well I’d meet somebody else and I say what are you doing he say well I’m a police officer with the Clark County Sheriff’s Department oh okay I asked another guy I
Said what do you do and he says well I’m a police officer with the Clark County Sheriff’s office after a while I figured out that Jean Mays was a recruiter too for the United States Air Force Reserve because as as I talked to uh Gary EPS about eight different members of our
Unit at that time were from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office so uh he he was a like I said he was a mentor to many he was a leader in the in the unit later on I got to be the Ops officer and he was still he was working
As first sergeant and you know he he mentored me I’d give you a little story here he was always prepared he he he uh he he did his he did his homework and knew everything and you would have a guy show up late for the you know you’re
Supposed to be on time in the military and this guy shows up late and so I’m like Chief Maz brings him in and we hear the guy’s sob story about how there was this wreck on the road coming in and he couldn’t get here on time and so we let
Him go out the the door and I say well Chief Maz that’s horrible what do you think we should do I mean I think we should just give him a break and he says well well sir um I let I called Sergeant Richie Howard who’s in Patrol and he called his
Troop Commander up there in that area of the county there were no wrecks this morning so he’s lying of course now Chief Maz was never that animated he was calm and cool I’m the one that’s all animated he was calm and cool he he said he’s lying sir but I
Took the time to write up this letter r man could you sign it you got a pen right here right here so I I tell you that little story to tell Jerome and Lesley that um he was always prepared he he had connections he knew who to call
And I felt very sorry for y’all because y’all never could get in late you you couldn’t he had the truth barometer in him and he just knew when you were lying and when you weren’t so uh another quick story too I know we’re on a timeline here but uh we were
Deployed to Afghanistan Gene ma did several deployments I only got to do one major deployment with him we’ went on Plenty of annual tours over those years and a lot of long weekends but anyway we were in Afghanistan at station on Camp Cunningham within that was the Air Force
Camp within the the vrim air base the army base and uh on the week we were there for the summertime so Memorial Day July 4th and September Labor Day they would have little Recreation things for the people because we were just bored silly there on on the base and and we
Would have Recreation events and so one thing about Jee May was is that he was apparently an athlete because he played a lot of tennis but he could also throw a horseshoe and uh so he and I he was the senior enlisted guy in the unit and
I was the commander of the unit at that time we played on The A Team together and we went through all the Heats and we we won that Memorial Day tournament and then Gary EPS who was the first sergeant at the time and working for the 06 com
Group Commander he and I got together and had this brainy idea that he and I would play together on July 4th and and we did and I think Gary and I won but the problem was we beat Gary’s boss the 06 the group commander who wasn’t too
Happy about that so we figured out quickly come Labor Day Jean and I play it again and and that that fixed the problem for Gary the only problem was is that Jean and I beat the boss again and Labor Day so Jean one thing you don’t
Know about Jean May is he he was the one of the Undisputed horseshoe champions of B base back in n in 2006 so but I just want to come here I’m representing the Air Force members here and we say want to let you know that we
Respected the man and and he and also miss Roslin was always with him too we had a squadron picnic or we would have one of his promotion ceremonies because there were several promotion ceremonies he you know from Master Sergeant to to uh senior master sergeant to Chief she
Was always there for him she would come down to our Squadron picnics we would he would she would magically show up on annual tours I mean we’re flying on a C130 across the United States we get there and Mr Rison would already be there wherever we were going so he he
Really took care of his wife he loved his wife and a lot of a lot of members loved him so thank you for this time and my condolences to the [Applause] family good evening Roslin was a very very special person when I went to Fort Valley the very first person I met was
Roslin she and I were roommates our freshman year and Not only was she’s special at Fort Valley I think she felt a little sorry for me because I was an only child so when she got ready to go home she would take me with her so not only did I know
Roslin very soon after I went to Fort Valley I met at all of the Mosses all of the Mosses lto was getting ready to do her student teaching that year and she said to her husband burn you take good care of them while I’m gone and he did he would check on
Us make sure that whatever it was that we needed he was there the entire family was very very loving so for those of you that didn’t know all of her family that’s where she got that kindness from it didn’t just happen she earned it 55 years of knowing Roslin
Were 55 beautiful years and again the entire Moss family all of her family Miss Louise was as warm and loving when I went to her house as anyone could be I had a cousin who worked at University of Georgia and I would say that I wanted to go visit with
Them but I really wanted to come home with rosin and be with the Mosses cuz they were so very very sweet to me and I will never ever forget the love and kindness the entire family shared with me good afternoon well I had the distinct honor and pleasure of introducing Roslin and Jerome
So I always told Ros I was also the uh Jerome was at Robins a Force Base Georgia and I was at that time dating a guy there you know he had friends I had friends so he had a friend that wanted to meet a friend so that’s how RZ and Jerome got the
Hookup through Doris mayard and Pete Johnson I married Pete I divorced Pete I always told Ros I said Ross you know God knew what he was doing when he gave you Jerome and gave Pete to me but Ros and I were sophomore roommates and to piggyback on everything
That Rosa said I won’t repeat it she was all those things to me except I didn’t get a chance to go home with her but we loved each other just the same and we started out being the dirty eight back then it was eight of us but as we grew
Matured and got acquainted with God we became the Golden Girls and I like for the other Golden Girls to stand we extend our love and condolences to you guys we will miss Ros we miss the doing the pandemic but being you know given Co and everything
We didn’t get a chance to visit as much but we did stay in touch and we will always be in touch we love you thank you for this [Applause] opportunity thank you thank you J was the best R my wife I first the University of Georgia certificate while we were in
School after completed that program we both joined the a police department anded oure bonded over a number of things one of the main things love of one another fell we had we had and also the love of fish fishing I been over his house at that time Dr had a
1960 uh Volkswagen Blue loud Muffler held together with bubble bubble gum duct tape and coat hangers uh after we loaded our fishing equipment into the car u g walked around to the driver side of course to get inside the car and I walked to the passenger side to get in he said
Stand I’m going to need you to push us I said push he said yeah my battery is low and I’m going to need you to pushes and I pop the clutch and we go on so I got behind the car and started pushing he pop the clutch and
Said St you’re not pushing hard and fast so I proceeded to push a little harder and we got off did it off while I fix the trip and he says thing what I’m going to do is when we get to the lake I’m going park on the hill so you don’t
Have to push so hard when you turn back you know as things go while we were fishing come you know frequently spoke of uh what we were what we were experiencing at work and one of the main topics back then that we talked about was course our
Pay uh and uh after the first few paychecks we both said we got to get something else going so we both started working you know extra Duty jobs and uh B was a was in the Air Force he had retired from there and so he joined Air Force Reserve and between
Working for the police department extra jobs in a force res took a lot of time from his family who he loved and cherished award SP time but he made that sacrifice so that they could attain the quality of life and have the things that he wanted them
To have he made that sacrifice he was a dedicated and loving father and a very loving husband uh frequently would discuss with me about things that were going on with Rome in particular at that time I L he was just still a twinkle in his eyes but uh he was very
Proud of him and his athletic accom accomplishments over the past few years I’ve lost three very their friends drong being one of them all three of them were pretty much like brothers to and and you know you search for justice because you realize those friends went far
So far sooner than they should F far sooner than they should have and you wonder why you just try to make some R Reon but it’s it’s difficult so wrong I don’t I know exactly what you’re going through but I definitely feel the pain I feel the pain I feel the
Pain the three friends that I’m speaking of all had one thing in common they had family and friends that truly loved them and recognize what they were going through they all had were trying to work through it’s like my soon to be 78y old mother would tell me a lot of times that
Everybody goes through some things and everybody needs a Little Help from time to time and what I would say to men especially get that help reach out to people because they only have your best interest at and they love you and they want to see you make it through what you’re going
Through so you can develop continue your friendships on Down the Line make we a lot of times men hold back and don’t confess our feelings and and want to get some things done about it so we must do that so in order for us to turn the page and continue to
Build a long lasting relationship with all your family members we must recognize that and uh and work through it all sometimes we need is just just that little push to help us get [Applause] through yeah at this time let’s hear from Burn and Erica and brother-in love and niece of
Roslin and finally we’ll hear from Brother Alfred M Mae brother of Chief Mae and I believe he’s going to share with us uh some scholarship opportunities that will enable us to continue to celebrate the Life and Legacy of De maids and Ros amen let’s give them a hand as they come
Thank you greetings to all Pastor bold bless you sir this distinguished Gathering to my family we are we have Heavy Hearts but we’re not sad because if you knew rosin and Jerome and Jerome and rosin they were not sad people they were happy people joyful people and Jerome would
Always put a little prank every now and then on you and they have you laughing but uh we consider him my brother and I can just ask a question you know may the work I’ve done speak for me and I think as you look around you can see that his
Work is really speaking for him May the life I live speaks for me and his and the life he led is speaking for him today and the question come to be what will our saying be what will our life reflect so we need to think about that but I
Want to just ask you indulge just a second to just give we call them Rome but Jerome and lesie just a round of applause they have endured and managed this situation well I commend you that tells me that you were taught well sir and we appreciate what the
Foundation that they have left with us and you know we talk about the fishing and talk about the tennis but that was my Domino buddy we played dominoes round and round and round we played on he taught me how to play on the phone too
So late at night my phone be going cling cling what in the world is that there’s Jerome we’re Clinging On Domino so we played a lot so Ron you got to pick up the slack you and I got to pick up our game a little later
On uh we did a lot of fishing together we did a lot of things together we don’t really consider him a brother I I mean you know like I mean a stranger he’s my brother uh by another mother because we spent so much time together for instance
You know we talked about him pledging Capal well he he called me about well let’s go let’s back up a a minute let’s go back when uh I first met Jerome and as we mentioned I at Fort Valley and so rosin said you know I met this guy what
You think about him I said well I don’t know she said well and we fast forward she says you know um so him again I think I like him what what you think I said well I like him too and then fast forward again she says you know I think
I’m love him she said what do you think I said think I love him too so I said well then we fast forward again she said you know what she says I think I’m going to marry him I said I think I’m going to I said what what a
Minute so that’s how our relationship started and Jerome has been just right there for me I’m wearing my white Blazer in honor of Jerome uh it’s a 50y year recognition and he and I talked a long time about U his white jacket but I think that God selected to give him a
White robe and I think that with that white robe I can imagine rosin going to embra in Broad weather KI on that on that road and he’s walking around heaven now with elder Watson dig and the other fellas up there I finders strutting around smiling and wearing his white
Robe with his gold with his red LS on it we just thank uh God for sh L Jerome to come our way Miss Mar our beloved mother law obious say she had four daughters and one son later on she started saying I have five sons and one daugh and four
Daughters so she just adopted all of us as her children because that’s the way we live Geron have and I basically every holiday for the last 50 years we have spent together either in North Carolina at the Howards or at mer mer Beach or at sville or at the MOs residence we’ve
Always shared and he and I used to have a competition for his eating and uh I think I kept a little mind he he hand his well but he’s just a guy that you don’t meet and see every day so he’s just an awesome guy and I think that everyone here
That know Jerome and new Jerome would say that he’s a unique guy and Ros unique so there was a love story there that I think that epitomizes what love and marriag is all about so I just want to say thank you for showing the love to the ma family to the MOs family
Cuz we have two we have really lost two great friends great soldiers thank you the Bible says he who began a good work in us shall carry it to completion until the day of Christ and I’m so proud to say that my auntie rosn and my Uncle
Jerome are now with Christ so while we are sad we know that they are rejoicing in heaven and that gives us joy and comfort one thing that we can say about Auntie was that she was a fighter and she never let the chronic illness be an
Excuse not to live and she never allowed that to be an excuse not to love one thing that we can all say about aune is that she would say hey how you doing but not only would she ask but she would really listen and that’s a testament that I
Also seeing Rome and Leslie they listen they check on you hey how are you doing so what I would like for all of us to do is to continue to check in on each other and to really listen to each other because we are all in this world
Together and I’m confident that just like the work that the Lord finished for my auntie RZ and my Uncle Jerome shall be finished for us one day too and one day we all want to hear the good Lord say Well done so let our life be a life that’s
Well done and A Life That’s loved one thing the Auntie had was a kind heart dealing with a chronic illness you can get a bitter heart and a hard heart but she did not have that she lived and she loved and let that be our testimony as
Others can say about us we want to thank Roman lesli Kim and the boys we know that this has been a tough Journey for you but know that your family is right here with you we love you and we are here for you every step of the way thank you so much [Applause]
Good afternoon bear with me this is going to be pretty hard but the pastor should be smiling I hear you run a tight ship pastor and I I’m going to stay to the script as much as possible because my big brother alone my other big brothers ran tight
Ships I’m Alfred ma the younger brother of Jee Jerome May senior and I think it’s okay now that I can defer to Jerome after hearing all the Jean comments and family bringing it home with what we affectionally call him I’d like to take a few moments to
Share a bit of perspective about our beloved Jerome and the absolute love of his life Rosa a love cherished hold steadfast through the lives of their children and their grandchildren please forgive me if some of what I’m about to share may seem redundant to what you’ve heard from
Others and if that’s the case please accept this as validation in between my comments here I’ve got to say um it would be easy to I can get through those two minutes by just simply saying ditto but I also know that my brother often times said chump you’re just a
Gear in the rear and lo and behold roony put me as gear in the rear he’d also say get bad Jack anytime you try to step forward jome as it has been shared by the wonderful testimonials from across various communities and networks was a shining example of strength commitment and
Excellence Jerome was the brother of many things fraternity our fraternity brother in cap alasa Incorporated he was a brother in arms in the United States Air Force he was a brother in the community of those who seek to protect and to serve and the big and little brother within
Our immediate family and across the many families who have joined us and salute to an amazing life with an amazing love not only a brother in many things and in many ways Jerome was also a chief of many things not only within within and across all aspects that I’ve noted but also in
His actions he was a giver in Chief he was a consoler-in-chief he was a chief mediator a chief advisor a chief protector and as you’ve heard a chief competitor and today in his own way he’s the chief convenor it would be and is so very hard
For me to find the right words that truly trly represent Jerome’s impact within our family within our respective families for my respective siblings and the many Souls touch therefore I’ll look for a common denominator now bear with me for another moment if you will think about your time and your moments with
Jerome whether family friend or colleague how fortunate were we to have seen the rle in of his lip the lip effect I called it was there a time that this physical characteristic stood out to you was it during a life lesson being shared was it in some administrative
Capacity was it in Fellowship in Church community and yes on the tennis court was it during some outing venture or experience that we may have had with him wherever it was when Jeron entered the Zone I called it of pure determination and focused attention the roll lip effect to me was
Like the Michael Jordan tongue of all efforts it came with love it came with hope it came with Jerome it oftentimes came with an immediate shift to an infectious laugh and smile it came with acknowledgement for many of us particularly nieces and nephews and mentees please bear with me again this
Might be a little coded but when you were fortunate enough to sit next to Jerome a bit and become comfortable he gave you an inviting smile and he crossed his fingers in a fixed position like a hashtag you knew you were in the comfort zone when he invited you in to eat the
Crow don’t get me wrong this Comfort level came with a price it also came with a smile and that infectious laugh he got a big kick out of it as well as a smile and a tear for those who experienced it the brother of all things that we’ve
Loved and cherished could not and would not be without his and our dear sweet gentle kind rosin you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would be able to best describe her without three words and you all have heard them and here’s where I’m going to be redundant immediately following her
You’re sure to hear her strength and her character and her will and her love her devotion her faith but her absolute calm as with Drome there too is what I imagine as a common denominator amongst family friends and colleagues a physical sign again that I’m sure many of you have
Experienced I know I have the raised or the arched eyebrow of Roslin Mays it came with curiosity it came in a form of listening it came in the form of observing it came in the form of patience it also came with facts and with wisdom it was always one of those nonverbal
Indicators almost a full language on its own transcend transcending all languages and sometimes without a single word spoken but always with a clear understanding it always came with love I have always referred to Ros as the timekeeper I don’t know how under what circumstance and at what age Ros
Recognized that I needed certain lessons I can remember her extending an invite shortly after her and Jerome were married for me to spend some time with her and Jerome at War and Robins Air Force Base what I thought was going to be amazing few weeks weeks of no school and no
Chores became an amazing few weeks of learning new things it was my first experience of having summer school with family the most memorable was how to tell time not only by clocks and watches but also by the angles of the sun and the sky she too was a chief giver and never
Accepted limitations and always saw opportunities last lastly Jerome and Ros RZ and Jerome their love and their Devotion to each other may sound like a fairy tale to those outside of these circles but we all know better how fortunate we are to have witnessed it felt it and experienced it how fortunate
Are we to share the story of their impactful lives in closing to honor their personal and professional commitment to the communities they impacted and the lives that they have touched the Gene and rosma Ma scholarship fun has been established at the University of Georgia for the purpose of supporting students
Whose experiences reflect a commitment to Civic or Community engagement and each year every year in perpetuity a deserving student in need of financial assistance will be awarded the Gerome and Ra’s Legacy and honor to pay it forward I’m happy to share that in my role with a philanthropic organization we’re
Contributing $10,000 toward the endowment and will provide matching opportunities and perpetuity to ensure continued [Applause] impact how fitting is it that their legacy yet again is tagged truly tagged giving more than receiving thank you God bless that was incredible for Shar and uh to ensure that this endowment is
Successful um and I believe I’m at Liberty to do this um January the 17th of every year going forward the Timothy Baptist Church as a whole will make a contribution to this endowment to make sure that it continues to live yeah that will be our way of continuing to honor the
Legacy of the maze Family come on once again let’s praise God for this incredible representation of two phenomenal people uh you know we’re little little longer than than usual but I think we all understand that we’re actually doing two services in one today and uh I appreciate everyone’s patience as well
As the attention you’ve given everyone who has spoken thus far I’m going to ask uh as our organist just play softly just for a moment if you have not done so already take an opportunity to peruse the obituary just going to give you a minute or so to do that and then we’re
Going to hear a musical selection from our Ensemble and I will return with a very brief very very brief Eulogy Am grateful for the things that you have Done yes I’m grateful for the to we w could go on and on and on about your word because I’m grateful grateful so grateful just to praise you Lord from my heart are the issues of my heart his Gratefulness I am grateful for the things that you have done yes I’m grateful for the victories we won I could go on and on and on about your word because I’m grateful grateful so grateful just to praise you Lord flowing from my heart are the isues of my heart his Gratefulness grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful GR grateful gratefulness is Flowing from my heart Greatful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful Greatful grateful grateful grateful grateful Gratefulness grateful Gra grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful [Applause] Gratefulness grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful GR grateful gratefulness grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful Gratefulness gr grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful grateful Gratefulness flowing from my heart are the issues of my heart his Gratefulness God bless your choir before we say a word of prayer together and then move into the eulogy let me again say to Jerome and Leslie that the both of you are the epitome of everything that your mother and your father have ever represented we just so thank God
For the manner in which you’ve handled everything you’ve just done it with class Style and grace and love and again all of these are qualities that uh your parents just embodied and certainly our prayers are with you with the family to Mother Mars and all of the siblings we so praise God for you guys I’ve I’ve had the pleasure of sitting
Down down and enjoying many meals over at mother Moss’s house with many of you and you guys are an incredible family and I’ve shared on her behalf mother Moss’s testimony so many times she shared with us how her husband passed when she I believe was in her late
30s but she reared all of her children and you guys are just a blessing in every way I know I’ve asked you to do it two times prior to but once again let’s praise God for this entire family please know that we love you our prayers are with
You God knows I mean that and whatever we can do for you after today’s service please let us know please let us know Heavenly Father we again thank you for the life of Jean and Roslin Maize God we pray that you continue to minister to their children their
Grandchildren and all of their family in a very real and personal way and now Lord I also ask that you would allow me to share word that will reflect their lives while at the same time encourage the hearts and minds of those of us who yet remain Speak
Lord have your way be glorified in Jesus name amen I’m going to ask if you would just lend me your attention uh perhaps for 20 minutes if you really give me the impression that you’re understanding what I’m saying I think we could do it in
18 but if I have to explain it a little B a bit further 20 minutes is the max that I intend to utilize Isaiah 61: 1 through3 here is how it reads it says the spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to preach Good Tidings to
The poor he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted to Proclaim Liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of Vengeance of our God to comfort to comfort all who
Mourn to console those who mourn in Zion to give them Beauty for Ashes the all of joy for mourning the Garment of Praise PR for the spirit of Heaven is that they may be called Trees of Righteousness the planting of the Lord that he may be glorified uh also before I announce um
The subject that we’ll focus on let me also speak on behalf of my wife uh who you know loves loves the Moss family and may family and I think I said I hope I said we have enjoyed many meals over at the Moss’s house um but certainly I
Speak on her behalf in terms of her love and her support for the family again verse three says to console those who mourn in Zion to give them beautyful ashes the all of joy for mourning the Garment of Praise for the spirit of Heaven is that they may be called Trees
Of Righteousness the planting of the Lord that he may be glorified I want to with my 19 minutes left I want to very briefly talk about Heaven’s return policy chances are since we’re just coming out of the holiday season you probably got a gift that you
Had to return so I’m hoping that this subject or title will register in your mind and in your spirit but again we’re going to look at Heaven’s return policy I’ve shared with the church here on several occasions that I have uh what I would call a very complicated relationship with Walmart
It’s a it’s a LoveHate kind of relationship if you will I love them because they have everything you need at discounted prices from groceries to lawn mow all Under One Roof but often times I find it challenging to walk through their automated doors because I dread St standing in the long slow moving
Checkout lines you would think a Fortune 500 company that has averaged $5 billion dollar in gross income for many years now would open up more than two checkout lines when they have 75 people brother blooda standing in line waiting to check out and if you have not already
Realized I’m not a huge fan of self checkouts my thing is you know if I was going to have to check out myself then I should have filled out a W2 form as well so I have what I would call a complicated relationship with wmart love them or hate them Walmart
Whose slogan is save money live better has a firm grip in America’s Marketplace in addition to their low prices and housing Everything Under One Roof from a flat screen TV to a head of cabbage another quality that makes them a leader in the marketplace is there no hassle no haggle merchandise return p
Policy Walmart has made returns easy by relaxing policies whereby they require no receipt if you have to return something to Walmart you have the option of a cash refund a gift card for the amount of the purchase or you can make an even exchange for the product that you
Purchase all of these options are available without a receipt Walmart has one of the best return policies in the marketplace but nothing nothing nothing beats the return policy that heaven has and as you can see here a portion of that policy is captured in Isaiah 61 verse number
Three Isaiah 61 begins with the prophecy that would later become Jesus’s mission statement that he quoted in Luke 4: 18 and 19 Luke 4 18 and 19 again is a quote from Isaiah 61: 1 it says uh the spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has
Anointed me to preach Good Tidings to the poor he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted to Proclaim Liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound verse two to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of Vengeance of our God to
Comfort all who mourn but it is at verse three where we arrive at what I would call Heaven’s merchandise return counter verse three says to console those who mourn in Zion to give them Beauty in exchange for ashes the all of joy in exchange for mourning and the Garment of
Praise in exchange for the spirit of heaviness Heaven’s return policy is the best I know Walmart leads the industry in terms of their willingness to accept products back with out a receipt but Heaven’s policy is the best unlike Walmart God is willing to take back broken Goods in
Return for a product of greater value yeah if you waiting on the thesis statement that’s it right there I said unlike Walmart God is willing to take back broken Goods in return for a product of greater value no company does that he takes from us something that we do not want in ex
Exchange for something that we cannot afford yeah listen to the damaged goods listed here in verse number three mourning ashes heaviness no one goes shopping for mourning ashes and heaveness no one picks those three items up off the shelf it don’t matter how much they are marked
Down even if you can get three for a dollar we walk right by mourning ashes and heaviness God is the only one you can go to and he will give you beauty in exchange for your ashes he’ll give you the all of joy in exchange for your morning and the Garment of
Praise in exchange for the spirit of heaviness and if you’re not careful life will Heap upon you garments that are heavy yeah I I so admired Rosen from the very time I met her met the first the first time when I interviewed for the pastor of this church I sat down down in
A room right beside her and I was amazed because she just continued to drill me she wanted to know what was what would be my Approach as relates to the care of the Timothy Baptist Church and even though she sat beside me in her wheelchair she said listen my legs may have
Challenges but my mind is extremely Sharp she never once allowed her condition to make her wear wear a spirit of heaviness yeah she come up here to the office and encourage us and so I say that to say to so many of us be careful when you get dressed in the
Morning I mean even if your uh your top or your shirt matches your pants and your shoes or spit polished and you look as if you just stepped right out of uh the Essence magazine I mean you look the part but make sure that you’re not dressed with the spirit of
Heaviness yeah it’s it’s hard for people to work with you when you wear the spirit of of heaviness it’s hard for your family to get along with you when all you wear is the spirit of heaviness it’s hard for you to come to church and worship
God if all you wear is the spirit of heaviness make sure that your wardrobe fits your spirit as a matter of fact with my last three minutes left I think I got three 3 minutes 28 seconds left if you would look at somebody that you love and tell
Them you look good in here today come on tell them that matter of fact tell two other people tell them you look good ask them where did you get that outfit I can tell that you do not shop at the Spirit of heaviness store you look the part not only does your spirit
Look good but you look good on the outside but only God will give you Beauty for Ashes the all of joy for mourning the Garment of Praise for the spirit of heaviness now if you’re wearing ashes if you’re wearing mourning or if you’re wearing the spirit of heaviness I want
To give you I’m going to give you 12 seconds of my good time to let you make an exchange right now come on throw off all of that heaviness throw off all of that sorrow if God woke you up this morning you still got something to be happy about and to praise God
For come on make an Exchange only God can take pain and give Comfort only he can take sickness and give Wellness only he can take confusion and Grant peace only he can take forsakenness and Grant blessedness only he can take sin and in exchange give forgiveness and only God can take death and give eternal life
Hallelujah some glad morning when this life is over as the old Saints would say I’m going stick my sword in the sand and may the works I’ve done speak for me one day we all are going to walk up to the ex exchange counter and again we shall say Lord May
The works I’ve done speak for me so Deacon Mays and Ros they’re no longer here with us physically but obviously their legacy lives on in our hearts and in our minds but every time you go to Walmart every time you have to walk up to the exchange counter to take something back I want you to think of these two beautiful individuals who just simply made an exchange come on let’s give God praise for them once more Hallelujah we love you Deacon ma we love
You Ros come on come on no more wheelchairs no more no more hospitals no more sickness no more worries they just made an exchange I’m going to ask now if the staff of Garden View if they will come and share with us some acknowledgements and after which we will have our recessional Hallelujah Greetings congregation a resolution of appreciation and Proclamation honoring rosn Mo ma we the members of the Fort Valley State University National Alumni Association Incorporated wish to express our profound sorrow upon the loss of our dear friend and colleague that we remember with affection and appreciation the impact she had upon each of Our
