Well I woke up this morning and I stepped out of bed and three Mighty founders of Sigma said they said that blue and white is all that you see and now no signal for me now all in my heart and all in my bones and all of my mind and all of my
Soul oh s got a p b e t a f b sigma’s the only bloody way p b a we Bluey they know why every single day cuz we got So so F Beta Sigma fraternity Incorporated was founded January 9th 1914 on the campus of Howard University in Washington DC three distinguished Men by the names of honorable Abram L Taylor Charles I brown and Leonard F Morris came together to create an organization focused on not only the betterment of the black
Community but service in the world which is emulated through the fraternity’s motto culture for service and service for Humanity with over10 years of Brotherhood scholarship and service the men of FIB Beta Sigma have been able to establish chapters all over the world including the campus of University of Wisconsin
Whitewater okay my name is Keith C Reed and I was one of the founding fathers at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater uh before the chapter was started for theeta beta uh give you a little background of why I was here uh the first fraternity brother actually on the
Campus of the University of Wisconsin was a brother named Reginal Hudson Reginal Hudson and I knew each other since high school since 1967 actually Reggie was one of the first Brothers up here and when he was up here he got kind of lonely so he used to call uh me up
And some other fraternity Brothers in Chicago I had pledged undergrad in Chicago witho Alpha chapter uh upon arriving uh in Whitewater we had a lot of brothers visit Reggie and myself from most of the chapters in Illinois so while we were up here um we came up I remember it was January February
1974 I had talked to a friend of mine that was in high school with me also named Mark Brown and I talked Mark into coming up here with me to Whitewater so so we finally got to White Water and got off the bus and once we got into the bus
Station we were standing there and the station clerk D said anything you guys need we said yes uh where’s the bus or how can we catch a cab he said where you going we said campus he said see those lights we said yeah he said walk with the climate of white waterer
At the time Brothers had encounters like these often however they did not allow these challenges to impact them so during that time uh we got a job at one of the foundaries here and started learning uh what the campus was about uh getting to know what Whitewater was
Actually about because to me at the time was a cultural shock actually so but eventually uh once we got enrolled and started up uh having five bit of Sigma presence known because it was only my Reggie and myself and we at the time was not really our philosophy for starting
The chapter up there was not really about the quantity of Brothers but the quality of Brothers hey law isn’t this something we hear often yeah Josh the focus of quality is Monumental to not only Propel the cause of Sigma but it shows that it doesn’t take many to
Create impact and change I the associate director of the James arcer University Center which means I work very closely with all the people in Student Activities and involvement um I am a graduate of w White Water proud um and started my interaction and learning about F Sigma
In 1983 the first era was when I was a student um and there was a very um opinionated religious woman that used to stand on the University Center um mall and sheam assol so I was a first year student and walking down the mall and
She screamed stuff at me cuz I had a sweater and jeans and my little backpack on and um she said I was going to hell and it was really cool because um there were um students gathered as you can imagine and there was this little pocket
Of blue on my left and that’s the first really true memory that I have but I just remember them standing there and shaking their head when I looked at them like no you’re not and um I was like okay and I just went about my business brothers were making an impact on
Students prior to being an official chapter the journey to becoming chartered on campus was unique for Founders Keith and brother Reg Hudson when Reggie came up here before Mark and I transferred up here and Mark wasn’t a sigma yet when he came with me he just
Was a good friend of ours Reggie had started a line the first line up in Whitewater but it was no Charter yet so they had the pledge under Al Alpha in Chicago uh that line he brought to Chicago down to the sigma house and that was his initiative to start up the
Chapter here and once we got up here unfortunately that first line did not go over Reggie left Whitewater to transfer to dep Paul University that just left me so knowing Mark and made this other young man up here named stepen Allen who we call Denver I had them played first
Line under me but also really officially it was the second line and after uh Denver and Mark pledged then flamont trainer came online after flamont trainer came online it was martinz Thomas state came online and then after him it was Philip Rogers and rard harlo that was the beginning of the charter
Line then that’s when we was recognized and got our chapter name in February which was Theta beta we thought that had a really nice rign to a TV you know just too bad just too bad brothers filed to have a charter on campus on a leap year February 29th
1976 and 2 weeks later on March 11th 1976 the Theta beta chapter of five Beta Sigma fraternity Incorporated was established on the campus of University of Wisconsin Whitewater the brothers were now able to navigate the campus as a recognized organization not only in Whitewater but as the first
Undergraduate chapter of five Beta Sigma in the state of Wisconsin in its growth more undergraduate chapters began a charter throughout Wisconsin including Theta me in the city of Milwaukee and the caparo chapter in the city of Madison I’m a charter member of caparo or should I say mad caparo chap 5 Sigma
And also chared member of caparo Sigma alumni chapter in Madison Wisconsin we had Brothers there but we had the first line which was two brothers they were called a sigma connection and then from there my particular line uh Blue Moon uh once we crossed we were able to uh go
Ahead and get a charter from there uh uh we were able to operate at the University of Wisconsin Madison as a chapter during that time I remember meeting a gentleman uh and found out later to be a brother and one of my brothers Dr Renard F harlo and uh
Unfortunately he’s in the mega chapter right now but he was definitely an influence uh to me as far as 58 Sig and help me as far as become a great Sigma man I just remember them being the cool men of reason right the cool-headed men of reason that um I remember I was
Walking home one night from studying late downtown and I was just walking alone and there again little pocket of blue where going back to campus okay can we walk with you absolutely thank you right so not even knowing that I could not tell you who those men were um but even then they
Were looking out for people in our environment over the first decade of being active stories like these became more and more frequent the campus began to not only engage with Brothers of the chapter but understand the purpose of f Sigma and what it meant to be a man of
Service to the community the chapter grew organically with Brothers like Steve Brown also known as Steady B contributing to this effort now I will say five Sigma we always says about numbers and I always appreciate that one so we bring in quality men but we are also competitive here too because at
That point you also saw other Greeks starting to um emerge and what’s interesting is I my roommate was part of a different fraternity and so it was a little bit of a battle in regards to who was the best in the yard um and we knew
Who the best was we had to show them what who the best was and so that growth in regards to who was joining our organization they were respected men already on campus um we always say this conver U this conversation is and we’re not going to make you a man because
You’re already there we’re going to show what Brotherhood is that’s really what we did over the course of period of time is we show people on this campus what Brotherhood look like Brotherhood look like five to Incorporated particularly to De that chap we were just intentional
About what we were doing on this on this campus at one point I was um BSU um president and another brother um from our chapter was vice president so we were running five Sigma and we’re running PSU brother’s involvement throughout the campus increased the visibility of the organ ation in turn
More men on the campus were inspired to seek membership and further the cause of the chapter my name is Kevin Crampton um I pledged uh in uh spring 1990 that was uh as I indicated the first chapter uh in the new decade thus our name new
Decade uh it was uh myself Lamar rway James Goodwin Anthony Bolton and Tyrone Knight so it was it was five of us all of the fraternities in s ities present themselves positively but it’s really about fit you know um at the time you know all the guys wanted to be like the
Sigmas all the girls wanted to be with the sigmas you know what I mean the sigmas had the best steppers we had the highest graduation rate and uh our swag was just on 10 on campus so these were guys that I really wanted to connect with because that’s really how I viewed
Myself these were guys that that um not only that we that we had like-minded interests as as far as our careers and things like that but these were guys that I could genuinely um and organically um connect with and have a real um Brotherhood type relationship
With so it was it was easy they have embraced men of different identity and told them that their Brotherhood with others matters and that they wanted all sorts of people to be part of that family and I think that ex that also extended to Zetas right and so
With that connect it’s not just you know constitutionally bound yes absolutely and that’s super cool um but the way that walks between those two organizations there’s a myriad of different people um in both those groups and um that to me is a lot more Global concept brothers were making strides
During the ’90s on campus but the blue and white family became whole in 1988 when our constitutionally bound sisters of Zeta F sorority Incorporated joint Wu white waterer this began a collective impact that would go on generations to come well what our experiences uh with the Zetas have always been great because
When we were online there was only five of us they took us up to Northern and they dropped us off with a sign saying Chicago 60 miles and said you all better be back in Chicago by 6 o00 tomorrow morning we said oh no what’s going on
Here so we walked back to campus and the Zas got us bus Fair put us on the bus and made sure we be back in Chicago the next day but that’s how much respect they had for us and we had for them in 1994 um when I stepped on the campus of
Wuw Whitewater um they were introducing themselves to all the incoming freshmen and I believe they were helping them um they were helping them to move in back in the ’90s Zetas and sigas had such a bond that just was amazing it was something that the public could see it
Was something that we felt it was a brother Sisterhood it was a true brother and Sisterhood so it was kind of it was like having really close friends on campus so we had um sigas there that whatever you needed they would provide it was like a huge family the support
That they had was more behind the scenes um and they made sure that we were visible as the years went on the chapter continued to grow the campus and Greek life were on the rise collectively the Theta beta chapter was well connected throughout the campus and the City of
White water Brothers frequently held Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives and served at St Jude’s and bethl Church in the city of Whitewater by 2003 membership into the chapter was sought after by several men on campus however ever with Brothers upholding the view of quality over quantity interested students did not meet the requirements
Set for membership once Brothers on campus came to this understanding it was decided to let the chapter go inactive until the summer of 2008 where Brothers Charles James III and David janal joined the wondrous band of five Beta Sigma by way of theta Mew in Milwaukee brother Dominique Dixon Wingo
Also joined the Wonders band in the spring of 2009 this set the chapter up to be later reactivated in 2010 with the first line back on campus which introduced Sam Foster uh I crossed fall 2010 into the Theta beta chapter I was the reactivation line when I originally got to college in uh
2007 on the campus of WW Whitewater there was only let’s see there was only Alphas Alphas were the only only person on the yard over the summer um that’s when there was a line here in Milwaukee through the uh data me chapter where two of the members actually attended W
Whitewater um we had built a bond um as the year years went on um I seen how they conducted their self as businessmen um how even though they weren’t established on campus they were still putting on it is clear that regardless of recognition the brothers of f Beta
Sigma continue to perform to the high ideals of Brotherhood scholarship and service this is instilled in every brother and Sam echoed the standards set by his Prof fights so there was uh David junelle and then uh Charles James and then uh about a year after that came uh
Dominique Dixon Wingo so being the reactivation line you know like it’s a lot of eyes on you but at the same time like I think what a lot of people don’t realize that you know even though I’m the reactivation line a lot of the work and all the things that come through with
It that all was done by uh David Jun Charles and DMO a lot of them they did all of that work because you know I just joined I didn’t talk to the counselors ahead of time and know you know how many people we had to have what credentials
We had to have that was them they did the paperwork I was just present you know and then but once I I did join I did automatically you know I took on the uh role as Treasurer and then president that following semester and made sure that you know what they started
Continued strong and kept going on in his efforts the legacy of the chapter continued forward brothers were back to the momentum created in its origin and were determined to reset the standard of Greek life that was once woring I was lucky enough to see you know the following semester see another member
Join you know we were solos and solos for so long but um you know one point we had a line of four individuals and then so on I still remember in 2012 um the gentleman came in and said we want more sigmas help us find more sigmas I said
Wow okay and that was pretty radical at the time I mean that was not behavior that they even openly talked about right but they just knew that they had more to give and there were more men who would benefit from that experience I want to be free completely free for Sigma the greatest Fraternity look down look up look left [Applause] [Applause] to over the last 10 years the thetaba chapter at FAA Sigma fraternity Incorporated not only grew in numbers but notoriety within various sectors of Campus charismatic personalities and engagement with students staff and faculty made Brothers well known on campus but their creative thinking LED them to having some of the most notable
Events socials and collaborations events such as blue and white week hosted with the ladies of Zeta fi beta out the blue hosted with the brothers of Omega sci-fi in Greek heat hosted with the brothers of Lambda Alpha oilon which was revamped and now known as run the yard became Staples of the Whitewater
Community man we we were in a interesting position we came through um Sam I think at that point had like either was just graduating and Marshall or was just coming in um the semester before us it was a learning curve for sure we uh had to learn a lot um
Organizationally um but I think what assisted us was our relationship with the community as a whole all four of us we had like so many different qualities um and I felt that that that was huge um it just was a calling for our line at that time to carry the torch
Um at that time I was taking classes with Von and I didn’t even know like he was going through process I’m taking classes with him and then I go to a party and I see vonte again and he just like what’s up what’s up what’s up and I
Ain’t think nothing of it you know um I saw in the day uh this one particular day hey man you going to that Sigma prob today and I’m like yeah why not cool cool then I ran into Rams after his probate hey why you join sign you know what I’m saying why you
Join and he gave me cuz I get to beat myself being an individual in the collective we has shown to be a challenge for some organizations but within 58a Sigma fraternity Incorporated you may hear you’ll never meet the same Sigma twice as we believe it’s essential to understand what each member can bring
While having space for brothers to make their own Mark in every organization but more specifically five Beta Sigma fraternity Incorporated we look back at you know the people that came before us and we really value that and what they were able to do so knowing that you know
It wasn’t even just like we were in the same organization but also on the same campus um that was big uh man it it did my heart proud I was there when he crossed and man it it it just kind of it gives me Goosebumps just thinking about
It right now so uh I would have been fine if he would have pledged something else but again he’s a pretty smart dude so obviously he knew which way to go um it was never pushed on me so discovering five Beta Sigma on my own and knowing that you know 20 years 25
Plus years before um my dad did the same thing it was it meant a lot it meant a lot and it really meant a lot because I knew not only did I have to uh plge five beta once I made that decision I also had to carry that torch and carry that
Legacy I didn’t want to just come in and be complacent oh okay I’m a legacy I’m cool like I got my letters like no it was about like how can we push this how can we grow this how can I leave my own legacy um here at White Water our
Sisters of Zeta FIB sorority Incorporated specifically at the capai chapter have always and contined to be a bond that many imitate but will never duplicate over the years our commitment to uplifting the community reaching Scholastic achievements and simply being in each other’s corner has been accomplished hand in hand so when when
When I joined um a lot of the Zetas that all in the same grade as me so you know instantly we already had that Bond we were in the same class Orcs together whatnot but then you know as each line came through you know you still built
That Bond we had times where we would get together and it be more like Sisterhood brotherhood like coming together um I remember a lot of times that were most memorable for me I think it’s us like just getting together spending time together eating together catching up together like just having
Everybody in one spot yeah we were really fortunate um that um we had um the Zetas here in in different um phases throughout my my my time here um but my last semester we have opportunity to really have um three sers that that came through and I think that really kind of
Revived the the organization what’s and also what’s cool about that is one of them was a sigma sweetheart so she came from a sigma sweetheart to a Ser who is still active in in Zeta um to this day Relationship on campus was great everybody hated on it honestly man blue
And white was dope like no matter what White Water say like blue and white was that on campus because it was real it was authentic you know it was something that you can create outside of the letters and that was the best thing about it because no matter what anybody
Has to feel about like the letters or things now like the bonds are real I feel like um we put everybody in a room together it’s just like 2000 and whatever year you want to put it as so the fact that we had the foresight to
Say hey we are not in this struggle alone we need our sisters right by our side to make sure that this effort stands the test of time Brothers of the chapter continue to make a measurable impact socially by being repe winners of Step shows like Bruce City and communally by Brothers winning chapter
Of the Year Greek Man of the Year and being part of the Greek Hall of Fame you know that that moment of just having Brothers you know throw me into the line and say we got you just stroll we got you you know has taught me and led me
About okay what does it mean to be a leader not only in the stroll line but saying when it’s time for you to want to lead you’re going to have somebody who can follow but also be ready to pull somebody next aside and it’s because of
Those moments in which stay to bed has shown up not only in the stroll wise but also in life that I continue to say you know what that’s why I mess with those Brothers over them they Deb our blue and white coronation ball cuz it’s something
That people look up to going to and then we have contestants first being who’s going to be Miss F Beta Sigma Miss data beta Miss blue and white these titles were thought of and and also I believe brother rard harlo might added some other titles over the years to the uh
Different contestants the approach that we had that semester or that year overall was to put oursel in the best position as possible to exceed and honestly to to bring a certain sense of of standard and value to the chapter the chapter also exceeded academically with Brothers being featured on the Deans
List forbs 30 under 30 in funding scholarships for students on campus Sigma has motivated me to look at academics more as a competitive aspect than just getting your coursework done just so you can pass get your degree graduate and go ahead and get a fancy job being a mediocre student coming to
College and then finally figuring out academics in college and then being a top tier student once I became a member of Sigma I definitely have been able to see myself grow and I would say the number one thing that I did take from uh Sigma and academics was definitely being
Being prideful but also not being afraid to ask for help and work also u in terms of being in the organization in my level of academic achievement it it only heighten um being around brothers that has um secondary degrees um or even doctor’s degrees it kind of like
Motivate you and inspire you to kind of go above and beyond so that’s what I say scholarship is beyond the classroom setting but it is also a lifelong journey that Brothers commit to for themselves in addition the chapter has remained attentive to world events such as social justice movements like black lives
Matter and World stopping pandemics like covid-19 which only encouraged Brothers to rise to address the needs of students and the community talk about your your favorite um social experience as a sigma okay I know it’s like Co so yeah right part I didn’t really like I didn’t I
Didn’t really get to do anything for real until like spring Splash time being a student during Co that was definitely completely different nothing that we have ever seen before but I came into it very positive uh I joined when Co was just popping off so nobody nobody knew I was officially in a
Member yet I was just waiting and then we had found out hey campus is shutting down so at that point point I was just waiting so then it was like oh dang well who knows what’s going to happen with me at this point uh so we took some time
Figured out that we weren’t going to come back to campus and then uh I was the first ever virtual probate are you ready to probate my St got it clear by dyg heading in sh me all this sh what’s handing in down about handing in man say what’s handing in coming back
In the fall was really an unknown on how campus was going to operate uh how often we were allowed to be on campus events uh so on and so forth it was a it was a learning adjustment for everyone however it was opportunity for us from a programming standpoint to do things
Different in a way where we can still do our programming and still have impact on campus and amongst our peers so that’s what we did and that doing that that 20 2021 school year we was able to be successful and win a chapter Year and be honored amongst the campus in and our
Peers because a lot of a lot of opportunities I didn’t get in undergrad because of Co but coming out of Co I was able to have those opportunities with being able to perform in strong competitions hosting strong competitions becoming a DE definitely one of my largest honors and
It definitely was a surreal moment DED bra solo that just came out he’s the reason why I’m here today in this position and back in this chapter brother Bill asked me to come see one of the newer brothers that came through um through the Theta beta Darren King when
I saw him man he he relighted he relit every fire in me like he relit it and I was just just like this brother right here like I got to give him this credit coming with [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Fire yeah so hello everybody my name is Darren King and I am proud to say that I am the President of the terrifying datab beta chapter of five bet s attorney incorporate I’m currently a senior here at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater I am a journalism major with
An infas in advertising when I’m minor in marketing with further research and just seeing like what the brothers are able to do on the campus when I was younger I was always taught to get yourself out more get yourself involved as as far as like volunteer I always did
Volunteer work with freedom America or um Salvation Army or American Red Cross which is one of our philanthropies as well you know you had two members of the chapter at the time when I was searching for a sense of Brotherhood and for any organization but particularly this one
It made me feel like I was a brother before I became a brother it kind of like fit within my M it definitely was a surreal moment my grandfather had the opportunity to be the de of pledges when he was in his graduate chapter um just beginning his journey all the way back
In 1959 so me being uh the spring 23 de was definitely an emotional moment for me and uh having a Neo fight of my very own uh with brother Darren King being a solo and myself being a solo that’s a relationship unlike any other today Brothers of the the chapter
Continue to carry forward the torch that was passed on from Brothers before them continuing Traditions like project sleep out the blue and the women’s appreciation dinner are a few examples of these efforts Brothers have also continue to be present throughout the states participating in events such as the
Black Arts Festival the Bucks HBCU halftime performance uncf walking run blue and white weekend but most notably our 2023 F Beta Sigma conclave hosted in Houston Texas not only just being a Neo at the time but also serving as the delegate and being the president of the
Chapter and being down there seeing the business aspect of Sigma and enjoying all the brothers who were able to come and um building further connections with um it was just seeing like all the great things that this great great fraternity has offered for me and I wanted to
Continue more with that wow so many memories um which one to pick oh aflv we used to drive everywhere shout out to Fan house and the trapper man fan house used to have this car that like like the whole city and we all will be driving that bad boy and he would
Like shout out to Fan house and his and his mom shout out to Fan house shout out to the fan house family when I was coming through my PBS CC rrio um they were also coming through um up in caparo as well um so we had a lot of
Collaboration with them um you know obviously Madison only being depending on how you drive 45 minutes to an hour away um it was nothing to go and you know do anything with them and you know they participated in a lot of stuff in Madison and then the same in Milwaukee
With theya M it’s always the preparation preparation of actually coming together um and prep preparing so having the chapter meetings whether they were 2 hours 3 hours long is the Fulfillment of being able to plan um and execute um throughout the semester um back in the
’90s like I said it was a family it was a huge family reunion and everybody wanted to be a part of the family the spirit that they bet showed me when I first came into this organization that’s a whole lot that they didn’t have to do it’s a whole lot
Pulling aside they didn’t have to do but they did that it’s because of the way I saw the relationship with my Pro fights in Theta beta it’s because the way Theta beta took Brothers in when we came as NEOS that’s what I look up to the men of the Theta beta chapter
Have brought to fruition the idea Brothers had in the 70s throughout the years men from different backgrounds experiences and walks of life have made their way to the Theta beta chapter and to this day remain an inspiration for future Brothers I I I feel good about the direction that the sigma is going
And I think uh that you have to change with change we have to continue to focus I think on what our our our our culture is and what what our model is culture for service and service Humanity that’s something I think our Founding Fathers when they created that model stuck with five bit
Of Sigma throughout these years it’s important that it’s not about um the Collegian chapter and alumni chapter it’s about the Brotherhood and so no matter what chapter you you belong into we’re all Brothers once we um cross those Sands of five to Sigma and I’m not
Going to recite them but 12in rules cuz if you follow those rules and apply them to yourself not only when you go into the process of pledging if you apply it to yourself now that will actually help help you become a better person I will always encourage people you make the organization don’t
Let the organization make you I watched some of the guys that pledged other CH other other fraternities I knew them before they became greet and it sort of seemed like they looked at or the organization and the reputation of the organization made them you know what I’m
Saying like it kind of created an image of who they were if you were a srub before the organization you join then you get some Greek letters and all of a sudden you demand no what I what what what attracted me to five Beta Sigma is that all of these brothers brought their
Own identity to that organization and enhanced it do your research and only your research and you find what you like you know you may find that you don’t like anything you may find you like like another organization that you never thought of but at the end of the day
Make sure that you’re doing it for you and no one else but yourself it’s this was a real moment just not only just being here but understanding like how culture for service service for Humanity is instilled in every single one of us who’ve been through datab beta and we
Want to shine that light to anybody that’s on this campus within our communities every single day this is your mantle to carry people before you made sure that you had the opportunity so you need to carry it forward and that is super hard but stay the
Course stay the course got to protect it people after you need it they don’t know they need it yet some of them aren’t even born yet I need Sigma to be here for 50 years more I would love to hear that the next time you do this it’ll be
