Welcome back here at wmbd we are celebrating Black History Month today we begin a two-part look at the national pan helenic Council or Divine dine starting with the fraternities here’s more when it comes to Black Le organizations stepping and strolling often comes to mind but there’s more these are your clergymen attorneys
Athletes Educators and local elected officials making up the membership across five fraternities the first one being alpha alpha Fraternity Incorporated they were founded December 4th 1906 on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca New York you can see UniFi School Board member Alex Williams and his fraternity
Brothers rocking black and old gold in your community and we’re here to to uh serve the community I me our model is first of all Servants of all we shall transcend all just 5 years later Kappa alpas side Fraternity Incorporated was founded on January 5th 1911 on the campus of Indiana University in
Bloomington Indiana you’ll often see members in your community including college professor Dr Marin spieler wearing crimson and cream it just fit more of my personality I believe at the time uh those guys uh were were very active on campus very engaged I’ve been um concerned with my community for a
Long time and even in the small town of mome um Illinois where there was a a very minute black population um they were um actively engaged in that in that Community both alpha alpha and Kappa Alphas saai were founded at predominantly white institutions Williams and Spiller are able to persevere through difficulties when
Thinking about the foundation their Founders laid out more than a century ago and I think back to the founding of this organization in early 1900s and what it may have been like uh on that college campus um for very few minorities who were uh pursuing higher education it’s it’s remarkable uh it’s
Remarkable particularly when you think about um the opposition that our Founders are up against in in Indiana um in in the 1911 back on the East Coast Omega side 5 Fraternity Incorporated was founded November 17th 1911 on the campus of Howard University in Washington DC sporting Royal Purple in old gold the
Omega’s motto is friendship is essential to the soul if you’re on Omega you got a friend there’s nothing better than being in the situation and having a friend reach out to give you that upli the historical black University was the founding place for another fraternity with the birth of f Beta
Sigma fraternity Incorporated on January 9th 1914 School social worker Carlos Evans proudly wears royal blue in Pure White while servicing his Community First to go to college with my family so there was no real lineage you know of Greek involvement or college involvement so they were the first to really reach
Out to me and connect with me I can see myself in them um and their personalities and in their leadership traits on campus and there’s something that makes the sigas unique one of the things that makes our organization unique is our constitutionally bond relationship with our sister sorority
Zeta FAA sorority and corporated which we are the only constitutionally bound organization in the Divine n or the National panhan Council and then finally there’s Iota feta Fraternity Incorporated which is founded on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore Maryland on September 19 1963 you’ll see members
Wearing charcoal Brown and gilded gold as they live out their motto building a tradition not resting upon one we have a variety of different types of members in our organizations it’s not just one particular type um I like our community service and our involvement in that and our initiatives we’re the youngest but
We are growing the five fraternities along with four sororities are in the National panh helenic Council each organization may have its own Partnerships with other National entities like March of Dimes and St Jude but in your community you can find them coming together tutoring providing scholarships giving out food and
Donating blood the nphc was formed May 10th 1930 with three sororities and two fraternities by 1937 the council was known as the Elite 8 and in 1997 they became known as the divine nine I was uh actually I was a I went to the actual
Event and it was a big deal for us at least for me it was um just to be included and you know being part of that D9 they had to change it from Elite 8 to D9 so I was very happy about that and coming up next an interview
