Welcome welcome welcome to our next Tiger talk which is tonight we’re super excited to have everyone join the subject matter in our Focus very simply finding funding three key ways to cover the cost of attending Morehouse College so this is going to be really important that we
Talk about what are the three key ways to cover the cost of attending warhouse college so first we’ll get into what is morous morous for over 150 years have prepared young men to change the world through what leadership through expectation and a mission to develop men with disciplined Minds will lead lives
Of leadership and service and with that mission this college would find itself Bridging the gaps of those those who might find themselves not wanting to attend the college or those wanting to find themselves to find their answer to find their choice and so at the college we’re focused on students defining
Themselves so they could redefine the world so it’s all about getting to know you and morhouse since 1867 on that beautiful day of Valentine’s Day found itself with that mission with offering 33 majors in four divisions and being able to really be that liberal arts college for men
So I’m your presenter tonight along with my co-presenter I am Michael gum I serve as the director of admissions for Morehouse College proud member of the class of 2010 and with me is Richard Chandler our student ambassador president so he handles a lot of the tours on campus and Richard can you just
Tell him a little bit about yourself yes so uh good evening everyone hope all is well I’m Richard Chandler current junor by biology ma major on the Premed track from mouille Kentucky um just a little bit by myself I serve in many capacities um I’m the student ambassador here and
I’m excited to be here with you all I’m very excited to share my knowledge awesome awesome awesome so tonight again we’re going to cover some key points and so the topics covered in this session searching and applying for scholarships the difference between internal and external scholarships or what we call internal
Institutional and then essay writing and external scholarships and then of course the most important adhering to the deadlines through this session through this webinar we want you to take notes because we’re going to cover a lot of information we also want to make sure that you are staying focused on these
Subject matters we have a lot to cover but we want to make sure that you’re keying in on every single one of these because this is going to help you as you navigate your way through college so the first first up is searching applying for scholarships so this is really really
Important the first thing is what are scholarships there are several types of scholarships right they’re types of Aid that do not require repayment this is like free money they come from many sources right they could be based on criteria that includes but not limited to academic achievement so most of those
Are merit-based scholarships you have athletic scholarships and then you have different departmental Community scholarships again this is money that you don’t have to pay back this is money that’s awarded to you okay and we offer them through the morous College academic award or the MCA opportunities for your
Merit to be seen for your Merit to show so upon reviewing your application you can potentially receive a scholarship based on your Merit and what makes you stand out so that gives you a nutshell of what our scholarships so our top four major scholarships that that I want all of you
All to write down and to know first one is uncf that’s the United Negro College Fund these are external scholarships that you want to know about so uncf is a major partner with majority of historically black colleges and universities and uncf has its own website where you can log in and be able
To search and find scholarship dollars it is something you want to be a partner with and just a little you know uh bolt here uh the president of uncf is Michael Lomax and so uh it’s amazing to have the president who’s a morehous man who
Happens to be uh in charge of of getting the uncf scholarships out to students and handling that as the president of uncf um but we also have the third Good Marshall College Fund again you’ll find a website for that one that one is very very specific and then there’s community- based organizations we’re
Going to talk about that a little bit more and I know Richard’s going to cover that and then sororities and fraternity so if you’re a part of Greek life um you know you got the Masonic lodges and things of that nature they offer Scholarships in the local chapters and
Globally so you definitely want to find those external Scholarships in that way so applying for scholarships at Morehouse first to be eligible you must be a newly admitted or currently enrolled Morehouse student if you’re not a student uh you will not receive scholarships internally unless you’ve been admitted to the schar that’s the
First thing you must meet all the criteria for that scholarship a lot of donors have opportunities but they create the criteria of what they desire so it’s so imperative that you find scholarships and that you’re looking to apply for scholarships that are attached and that you’re reading that criteria
For those donors you need to First and always maintain your GPA based on what we give out there’s certain criteria and certain requirements if you do not meet that GPA threshold you have to potenti of losing that scholarship so knowing those criteria for scholarships is very important some scholarships have
Community service hours I know Richard has some experience with that and how important it is to do community service and to earn and gain scholarships from that way and in all and most important you must submit all required documents necessary for processing what is not here that you need to understand is that
The free application for federal student aid also known as the FASA has a lot of implication in terms of you receiving internal Scholarships in morouse college so your fast foot typically has to be completed I know we are on delay and I understand that and we’re going to talk
A little bit more about that but this focus and this presentation that we have for you tonight is to think of what are the scholarships that lie externally as you are waiting on fast for to open up we want you to be proactive and think about the external scholarships that are
Available so a couple of things is we talked about what are scholarships big question what are college grants well college grants are financial aid awards that do not need to be repaid they are provided to students to help cover the cost of their education grants are provided by the federal government state
Governments and private organizations and donors so again free money that you don’t have to pay back so it’s important to get in contact with with morouse college or the institution that you’re attending and to make sure you’re making connection with them so that you know what grants you’re eligible for not
Everybody’s eligible for the for certain grants but we’re going to talk about that um most importantly most schools consider your free application for federal student aid your FASA and your student aid index that’s that new language to determine Financial need so please understand what used to be for
Some of you parents who might know and some of you students who might know what the expected family contribution is or the EFC that’s now considered the student aid index and so in order for us to release some of these funds you’re going to need to know what your s
Is which brings me to the next point that our top four federal and state grants that you all need to be aware of is one the pale Grant two the fs EOG which is a Georgia based grant um the Georgia Hope Scholarship Grant and the Georgia tuition Equalization Grant again
Free money based on your criteria based on your federal aid that the government gives based on your your current situation and so these are four federal state grants we want you to be very familiar with you can find all four of these grants on our website as well at morehouse.edu
So to get started the 2425 fast for form update it’s new and there’s a potential that the 2425 FASA will be available in December so it’s very important that you know what the changes are first first they reduce the number of questions you have to worry about so now it’s going to
Be a little bit more easy to answer those questions there’s an automatic transfer of the IRS data which is through the data retrieval tool that now goes directly into your fasta so that’s nice because you don’t have to pull any information over it’s going to happen automatically as soon as you complete
The fast love and you put in your social security number and everything else um increase Aid eligibility for single parents that’s a huge one and then the new federal pale Grant formula so they’ll talk more about these but these are the major changes that you need to
Be aware of that in December you’re going to want to make sure you you take heed to these four so what to do while waiting for the new FAL form that’s a great question um first you want to gather required documents your tax returns bank statements Social Security numbers
That’s going to be really PE because again it’s your information and these are things that sometimes we just just don’t know we need but these are things you need when applying to college you want to create your federal student a so the same way you did before or you might
Be familiar with other siblings or you know family members you have to create your own FSA ID you must submit your warhouse application that is crucial if you don’t submit the application then we not we’re not going to see you in our database to be able to know where you
Are in your process explore scholarship opportunities we want you to venture out we want you to go find as many scholarships as possible we’re covering external scholarships heavy today but we want you to think about what are the scholarships that are in your local area that we don’t know about we’re not going
To cover them all so it’s important that you find scholarships and we have Google and other search engines for that purpose so the key is to stay informed keep an eye on updates from the US Department of Education regarding if there’s any changes to the application process again we want you to stay
Informed so Richard tell us the difference between internal and external scholarships perfect so as you can see on slide there’s a very big difference between both as you see the institutional scholarships they are scholarships that are given within or by the institution so if you think about it
It’d be more house College giving you institutional scholarship um institutional scholarships again are awarded by morous and they help offset the ca of tuition and the cost to attend our institution so when you are completing the financial aid application process you are automatically considered for all Scholarships in Grant so anything that’s
Available at the college for you you are considered for and the amount of scholarships can vary and there may be a few renewable or one-time Awards definitely make sure you’re writing those things down um if it’s a one-time award you may you won’t have it maybe
The next semester or the next year so you may need to find another way or find other scholarships to offset that cost so for instance uh my freshman year I got an award from outside that was a one-year award and so for the next year I had to find something else to replace
That one year award so things like that are definitely things you want to keep track of and how you’re paying for college because what you don’t want is the surprise which is like oh I got a bill of $2,000 I thought I had it covered but really you had a one-year
Scholarship freshman year and it didn’t renew so then it says at the bottom which is a great one to students should apply each year to cons be consider for scholarships so we do have a scholarship portal that most of our students use make sure you’re always applying always
Putting in an application because you just never know it may be a new scholarship um hopefully 30 years down the line there’s a Richard Chandler scholarship you just get considered now you have a full ride so you never know what could be there for you who could be
You know sitting there waiting for you to come accept a scholarship and now you have a full ride you just never know so generally entering first year students are limited to receive institutional scholarships um for the the first eight full eight full terms of full enrollment
Um so basically there are not a whole lot of full rides um this just the the reality of it um but during an academic year scholarship is gener awarded for two semesters fall spring or summer and transfer students terms term limits eligibility will be determined on an individual basis so if you do
Transfer in your your situation a little different and they’ll try to determine what works best for you so criteria criteria for these scholarships vary um the off the scholarships and financial aid will pretty much match everyone from the overall pool of financial aid applicants so if you are I’m a biology major um
They won’t match me with a scholarship that is for Fine Arts Majors it just wouldn’t make sense um so if the fund are set for certain major a certain classification those are set for those people um generally speaking though it does usually auto match which is really
Cool which I love the the college does so the on that you are available for it will almost auto match you too so first year students again are limit to receiving scholarships for the uh for the first eight terms of fulltime enrollment so it it’s again usually first students don’t receive full rides
Don’t let that deteriorate you because I had a lot of friends that didn’t get a full ride came to morehous the first semester and then the next semester they had a full ride so you know God’s always working and you’ll find a way trust me
Um but there are ways to pay for college there are people here that you know are always applying to make sure that they don’t have to pay for so during Academic Year Scholars are generally awarded for two semesters um for me it’s fall and spring some people do spring summer just
Depends on how you’re you’re set up so if you can usually what I do follow the requirements I do fall and spring and if I need to take a summer class or would like to I I try to take it if I need it so it’s otherly up to you and then again
For our transfer students we’re going to make sure that we uh you know make it eligible for you so the you you’re Case by case when you’re a transfering student so our top four internal scholarships we have the Michael lomac scholarship um Michael LX actually graduate from warhouse college he is
Current CEO of uncf so it’s very cool it’s a very good scholarship and he comes back and he speaks so that’s a real cool thing we have the boner scholarship if you become a boner scholar you do a lot of community service so I believe they’re required to
Do 10 hours a week but with that you have a lot of cool amenities one of the ones I think that’s cool all their first year students stay in Graves Hall which is the oldest building in Mor college so just imagine you standing in the building that Mar the King Jr stayed in
That many great people stayed in we have the Oprah Winfrey Scholars so Oprah Winfrey is one of our biggest donors at the college um oah has came to the college so the day she comes back I’m an open wi free scholar myself um because my mom would love that picture and I
Could see it being on her Facebook wall so um then we have the Morgan Stanley scholarship so I’m a Morgan Stanley scholar myself um it’s very inspirational it’s a very good scholarship they pay for all of my schooling um literally whatever I need they’ll cover it we go to New York every
Year and um we actually have our face on the Morgan Stanley building in Times Square which is really cool you’re assigned a mentor you’re assigned these classes you have to go to so to day I believe at eight we have financial literacy we’re just allowed to learn
More so each of these programs it doesn’t really just provide you with just like the paying for your school but it provide you with so much more around it and it want to make sure not only that they’re paying for your school but they’re making sure you succeed in
School so external scholarships so there are scholarships everywhere there are over a million dollar scholarships that go unclaimed which means that you can claim those that money so the scholarships ex and outside are that are greatly considered outside scholarships so to locate these outside scholarships you can always contact your high school
Guidance counselor local organizations like the Rotary Club things of that nature religious groups fraternities and sororities places of employment and the web you know you all have thousand computers in your pocket so always you can Google scholarship for this scholarship for that there’s a scholarship for everything I promise
There’s even a left-handed scholarship I’m left-handed so I defin appli so just be open and be ready you know to do a lot of research because at the end of the day you know you want to have schooling paid for it but the the real goal is to get a refund
Check so our top three external scholarships are the gay Millennium Scholarship we have alumni chapter scholarships and then State and Regional programs so I know from my state in Kentucky we have like Keys money so Keys money a lot of people use their keys money to pay for schooling
So finding external scholarship so there are many popular websites and here are some of them we have fast web um Niche which is definitely a good one um the College Board scholarship search uh capex I used capex a lot when I was coming to college and scholarships.com
These are all places that I’ve used and been on so I personally know that they’re good places to search um and just remember that you’re always in a search even if you get everything paid for you can still receive scholarship money or still work towards graduate
School or things you want to do so always have the mindset of I’m always searching so external scholarships they have to be reported to the morous College financial aid office so most of the time they they’ll send the check to morous college is the greatest thing I
Can tell you so and the Federal Law requires that all resources are considered when determining eligibility and awarding financial aid therefore Morehouse College will adjust the student’s financial aid when necessary I want to make that clear um external scholarships have varying requirements and deadlines they do so make sure
You’re staying on top of it um if one has a 3.0 and the other one has a 3.5 you might want to get just a 4.0 call out a day so make sure you’re staying on top of that and if you have any questions make sure you’re contacting those scholarship donators directly um
That those are the people that hold the scholarship hold the money so make sure that if you have any questions comments concerns critiques anything you’re telling them so the importance of external scholarships so College tuition it’s only going up it’s only going up so institutions have limited Aid and
Limited money toward they can afford to everybody being here a school like Mor has 2300 2300 students and if if we gave everybody $50,000 in financial aid it’d be almost impossible and I don’t know how we just survive so we have to you know give money out to each people to
People’s circumstance pretty much what they have things of that nature external scholarships help students just close that Gap so the goal is to not take any loans out you know that’s what my parents always told me do not take any we we’re not gonna take any loans out
We’re g take the best offer so if you can you know that external scholarship can allow you to you know be in the driver’s seat you know have that money in your back pocket but more importantly you know you may need it just to get a
Book or you may need it for these things that you need um they’re there for you and you know you’re not just always relying on the institution to provide funding so the institution can provide you know a certain amount here and there but you know it’s just again we’ve
Talked about it it’s rare to get a full ride from morouse it’s rare So if you’re you know really dedicated want to come to morouse there are ways to pay for where you don’t have to pay anything I’ll pass it back to Dr gum hey man appreciate you so essay writing and
External scholarships man Richard you did a great job with that and I love the personal the person touch um with that so couple things external scholarships and essay writing I mean you can utilize one essay and be able to get a lot done so write each essay proposed by the
Cenat that is so important because you can use that right that one essay can do so much be sure to spell check each essay send the essay to your English teacher to be able to make sure that that essay has all the pieces you need because you’re not only trying to get
That money you’re trying to get a lot of money and that’s really critical so what excellent college essays have in common so what we’ve done is we looked at what college essays do and what they should and what they should not do right so these are the dos
And don’ts of what you should do in college essays which you can use those same essays again for scholarships so the dude show you know or show your knowledge of how to tell your story by including visible sides of planning write a compelling opening statement paragraph right you’re trying to capture
These grants and donors you’re trying to capture these donors do use a lively individual voice it should be you not what someone else’s story is not what someone else thinks check for spelling I mean the grammatical piece is so crucial right and I’ll add keep the keep the
Limit in the words right Richard you probably remember when you went over a little bit and they were like no you have 200 50 words that’s all they’re looking for so they’ll penalize you if you don’t do that right which is gets us to the don’t do not plagiarize do not
Rely too heavily on AI tooles like chat GPT it’s cool but that doesn’t mean it it it works okay so you don’t want to do that do not exaggerate Right misrepresent facts about your life do not have your uh do not have uh someone else write your essay that’s really
Really important so parents I know you want to help friends you might have better F yeah might have friends that can really write that’s cool them looking at your paper is cool and maybe helping with editing but not right it really needs to come from
You so the F the first thing you want to do is you want to plan right a good time for students to begin working on their essays is the summer right and a lot of these scholarships the window and the periods of time in which they come out
Is right when school starts which is like in August so take that summer time to write really strong compelling arguments and really strong essays that talk more about who you are that talk about um the things that you need to mention that make you stand out right so
Start early which will also give students plenty of time to work through multiple drafts of their essay before college application deadlines which can be as early as November for students apply for early decision or early action have those essays right connected with your scholarship so you should be doing
These things simultaneously so while you’re applying for college you need to be applying for scholarships right those things should be going hand in hand students have the options when it comes to sa help so they can ask peers teachers again call on those resources call on those good writers get what your
English Professor English teacher that really helped you in other writings and other works and talked about your writing to assist you in college essays as well as scholarship essays so writing to college as say some expert encourage students to outline their essays before jumping into the actual writing so important you need to
Outline I mean if there’s a $25,000 scholarship do you really want to miss that you need to outline the first draft in an essay doesn’t need to be perfect the key to good college essay is striking a balance between being creative and not overdoing it if you
Overdo it it’s going to show so find that middle ground while admissions officers like myself try to learn about the students it’s very important that you also are really gauging writing skills right so that so that you’re able to make sure that you’re submitting topnotch work right make sure you’re
Kind of gauging is this making sense am I really doing what I need to do uh let me take that sentence out it really doesn’t fit here those are the kinds of things you want to do as you get this money Richard yes so adhering to deadlines
This is going to be one of the most important things if not the important thing when you are trying to get scholarships so why what is the reason to I should adhere to deadlines well for one it’s respecting the requirements if someone’s going to go out and give you
Any type of money the least you can do is respect their requirements and respect more importantly the people that are going out of their way to give you this scholarship right you also want to make sure you receive the funds so a good thing about you know you’re
Applying for a scholarship you want to make sure that when they see your application it’s turned in on top that you get the scholarship you don’t want anything because of you hindering you from not getting the scholarship and more important this keeps the connection to keep the connection with the
Scholarship committees I tell people all the time one of the greatest thing you can do is stay connected with those people if you apply before the deadline they’re going to know you know oh well that kid you know that James kid he applied early we uh have another
Scholarship we would like to recommend him for it um it happened I literally was applying for the this Tusk Airman chapter scholarship back home um I applied early and I was the only application that they got early and by the deadline so with me doing that I was
Able to be considered for the national scholarship so just by applying a little bit before the deadline Lally early before the deadline I was able to get not only the chapter scholarship but the national scholarship so instead of getting 1500 I was able to get I believe
5,000 so just in in that one small thing I was able to get more money for my for my schooling so here are some ways to adhere to scholarship deadlines this is how I did it so when I was applying in high school the greatest thing I did was set
Reminders in my calendar so if you take your phone out all right you can literally sit there and say Hey Siri remind me to finish application for the James L Johnson scholarship and it’s August 22 right and the great thing you do with that is it may not be due till
August 28th but you want to have the mindset to do it early rather than on time so doing them early is always going to help and I keep saying it’s always apply early that shows the initiative that shows that you want the scholarship when there are committees and now being
On the other side and sitting on scholarship committees back home when you’re applying early and we can look at your application and really break it down we see that you know who you are but more importantly we know okay this person is serious about getting the scholarship this person is serious about
Their school but where if you turn it in you know it’s do at 11:59 you barely slide it in at 11:57 we’re thinking okay you know we got less time to read it and also man he may not be as serious as the other person that you know turned it in
Early and had all the components anything like that so if you’re going to apply you know always apply early man that’s that is smooth right there all right Richard so what I want you to do before get into this amazing Q&A and the reason why we wanted to a
Lot for a lot of time is because I know you all have questions about scholarship so go ahead get all those questions out we want to make sure we get to them and throughout the entire process okay that’s gonna be really really crucial um so Richard can you just tell us like
What are some of the things you did so talk about how you and I met um talk about the scholarships that you were able to retrieve and you were able to get and then what at more house how did you how did you make it work right
Because you were staring at a certain cost and fees as well yeah so um I toured morous and I knew that I wanted to go to Mor house I knew Mor was a place where I could develop and grow and more importantly it was going to be a
Place that you know challenged me like nothing nobody else and no other school had so I knew I wanted to come to mhouse uh my parents told me freshman year of high school look we don’t have the money to pay for you to go to college you know
So unless you’re going to go stay in state you know my parents work to the university my mom work to the University of Lille unless you stay in state you know wherever you going to go you have to figure out so I took as a challenge
You know I can figure it out you know I have good grades so with that I was actually able to meet Dr gum he came to my hometown um for HBCU fair so I able to meet Dr gum um I was able to meet Dr Snowden and those guys and keep you know
My connections strong so if you’re interested in coming to a college definitely keep your connections within the college more people start to learn their name their stories things that they are doing uh when it came time to apply I got in but I believe I ow I got
$7,500 over four years so if you know Mouse is right about $200,000 so I was like oof you know I was getting nervous because I didn’t know what to do but I just kept applying so going into my senior year I made what we call The Hit
List me and my mom officially named it it was a list of every scholarship that I wanted to get and then every award that I wanted to get so and it was almost three or four pages with that that summer I spent you know it was
During Co so I was working but also every night I would try to write essays so the comment app I believe at that time had five essays I wrote all five essays that summer and the reason I did that is because most of the scholarship committees are going to ask for those
Five essays just at different quantities so one may ask for um what is world pece for 250 words so when once you write them pretty much done writing essays um when I got back to school so August I started collecting the things I so recommendations I had recommendations
Pretty much on file I had my transcript pretty much on file so when it came down to turn in things I had every piece of resource that I would need ready to send so a good thing is gathering all your resources um I looked at my scholarship
List and I said okay it’s time to apply so I was applying for schools and I knew where I kind of wanted to go while I was applying for scholarships but with everything being ready all I was doing was collect collect collect submit so it
Kind of made easier so the EAS thing you can do is start working in the Summers to get what you would like um when I applied from Warehouse I got in around December I got my how much it was cost and I kept applying through their scholarship portal um I believe
Yeah April 1 we were just talking about it I got denied for bombing so I called the school thinking it was a joke um because like April 1 like they’re funny so I called the school and they were like no sir you you didn’t get it so I
Was just like man like I know I want to come to more house I know this place for me um like I have to find a way so I got on the scholarship portal justed applying like crazy like whatever I saw it auto match me to a couple things but
Whatever I saw I apply for it like there was a scholarship for a resident in Bowmont Texas and I was like you know I don’t know if anybody Liv in bont Texas but I don’t so maybe they’ll just give me the money because I’m I’m a little
Bit far but close so I applied for just applied implied I believe April 14th I got a call and I have been selected for the Morgan Stanley scholarship so that pretty much covered my entire four years uh everything so everything is covered literally uh from the books to you know
Anything that I need is covered housing everything so that’s how I pretty much pay for more house Works through you know a full ride scholarship you know and I just kept applying because I knew like I knew when you know you want to be somewhere yeah I think it’s uh WiFi went
Out a little bit say that part again oh I said when you when you when you know you want to be somewhere you’ll find a way to get there that’s it man that’s it I your story is so compelling man and there’s other brothers like you right that are at
Morehouse but they’re not worried about paying fees but can you talk about how you kept it renewed and then we’re going to jump into these questions say it again oh I said can you talk about how you were able to renew your SCH ship so like what GPA did you have to maintain
And then what are some of the ways in which uh you were able to go and get scholarships some of the other ways you were able to get them yes so the way I was able to stay on scholarship and keep it renewed most of them have GPA
Requirements I know that for Morgan Stanley I have to have 30 credit hours a year so 15 to 15 and pretty much um I need 50 hours of community service and I need a 3.0 GPA so the way I was able to do that honestly with my grades just
Continue to study um college is a little bit different from high school because you pick your own schedule and for the first time in a lot of Our Lives you know we’re drivers you know our parents have been driving we kind of been the passenger seat and you
Know I always tell people you know you’ve had the mom arm to swing over when you did something that you weren’t supposed to do swing over when it was you know needed protection so now it’s kind of just on you to drive the car so keep studying keep learning and keep
Realizing like there’s a bigger purpose you know for these grades and also of that nature um also with community service I just went back home when I went back home Christmas break you know instead of sitting there taking a break you know I was like okay I can go
Volunteer at my church I can go volunteer at this K this soup kitchen I can volunteer at this Camp things of that nature so just keep on moving even during your breaks it’s a good thing to do we also have a lot of volunteer opportunities on campus so I literally
After homec come you had the campus clean up you do do that for three or four hours or you do a little bit here a little bit there you can get 50 hours but for some of my external scholarships it may have been different like it may
Have been do you have 3.5 so I had to keep a GPA of a certain standard so I can stay on those scholarships as well and I know for me when it came towards looking outside and looking for external scholarships the thing I did the most was sit on websites and Google pretty
Much what I’d be so incoming freshman biology major um HBCU student things like that trigger Wares and I say trigger Wares but that would trigger a lot of scholarships in in Google so with that I was able to find different ones okay this is what we have and then
Locally I looked locally like my aunt and my grandmother they’re all members of you know the ad Omega chapter of alpha Capital Alpha sword Incorporated so I knew was like oh they have a scholarship can I apply once I learned I could apply I applied so things of that
Nature looking locally seeing what you have locally and then you know regionally and then nationally internationally you know there’s money everywhere so I was just making sure that I applied um setting those you know calendar dates and making sure that I went to interviews um I was during Co so
It was a lot of you know shirt tie and you know sweatpants combos but you know it worked out and I here Mor college so man you’re man I just love your story man so we got a lot of questions coming in uh it’s coming in hot um so a lot of
Questions are dealing with um will morous be waiting for the fast before issuing inter internal scholarships right how would this impact early decision applicants look Richard I’m not even going to do that one to you man I got you uh so that’s a great question so the first thing we want you
To know is that um obviously a lot of these scholarships we already have stated are based upon you having your financial aid completed right but we also know there’s a delay when it comes to FASA but our early decision date was November the 1st and we plan to inform
All students who apply Ed who have had a completed application on December the 5th so we’re going to offer our morouse College academic award which is a a morouse college scholarship discount to be applied at that time and we’re going to couple that with a lot of other institutional scholarships once we’re
Able to determine what the financial aid is for the student so that’s one however I know what you’re thinking there could be some scholarships where Hey My My SEI or respected family contribution might be higher than the expected amount in terms of what is actually going to be
Offered or what I’m actually eligible for so we have other scholarships that are not based on the EFC or the SEI meaning that that index that gives you a number that basically could tell what you could afford and not afford um that we’re off offer scholarship this year
Outside of having to have a certain score right we just require that the financial aid is completed so knowing that at a later date please stay in contact with our admissions office so we can make sure that we’re communicating those you’ll hear the language you’ll see it through our letters and through
Our interactions within our system that will communicate with you so the best thing to do is to plug in to your counselor okay um so uh Richard what about scholarships for early ction so I know in terms of mbased scholarships we offer scholarships for early action
Where uh you can get those along with early decision and we also have scholarships that are going to come out for regular decision as well but when you apply Richard did you have scholarships for early action were you early action applicant were your regular decision when did you find out you got
The money man so I applied early uh I applied I believe early decision um yes I apply early decision pretty much so I got mine in December uh I believe December 5th if I if I’m still young enough um I got my first letter in January I want to say right after or
Right in the middle of January as far as what the school was going to be able to offer me um so pretty much well you would Now call your mcot mcot what I got um so I got that and then I didn’t get the Morgan Stanley phone call till I
Believe April 14th so I would just sitting there literally applying applying applying applying applying um like a mad man cuz I I want to come here so you know the decisions come out at different times I’d say be patient um some scholarships have different requirements or they’re looking
Different ways or even though it’s you know it’s it’s you know taking long and you’re feeling daunted or you’re feeling sad just hold on because you never know what could happen especially because a lot of scholarships you know you just kind of never know so oh that’s real and you’re a Morgan
Stanley scholar so we have a question about is the Morgan Stanley scholarship for incoming freshman yes so it is it’s for incoming freshman um you’ll receive it your first year and you’ll maintain it until you graduate so I am the inaugural class of Morgan Stanley Scholars so if you have any more
Questions you can feel free to ask awesome awesome awesome um I got a question for you Richard I’m a student who holds a 4.5 GPA but wasn’t able to indulge in many clubs due to managing football in addition with a football extra extra curricular activity carry as
Much weight as clubs so I’m going to talk about it from the standpoint of how we look at uh application holistically um and then Richard if you could talk about it from uh your standpoint of students that you know that you’re familiar with that have maybe been associated with clubs did they earn
Scholarships too right uh and so with that uh in terms of Merit we look at it on a holistic review which means we’re looking at everything the application your transcripts letters recommendation the ideas we want you to tell your narrative want you to tell your story in the application process and so each
Student is different Richard mentioned it earlier so on a case- toase basis the terms of scholarships that’s the same with us just because you didn’t play football doesn’t mean you’re gonna get a scholarship just because you played chess doesn’t mean you’re not going to get one either right we want to look at
Who you are and then apply scholarships based on what it is that you say as well as based on your Merit in terms of being able to do the work at morouse College our Scholars um are amazing we have so many that are able to earn scholarships internally and externally so you know
Would football extra activity carry as much weight as clubs yes it would it carries just the same amount of weight because it’s universally lateral for us a football scholar is equal to a tennis uh scholar to a lacrosse scholar to a uh a person who is a part of our amazing
Debate team right uh scholarships are rendered based on Talent at morouse Scholars so I think that that’s a uh that’s a great question so Richard can you just talk about it from some of the friends you might know that maybe have been a part of clubs um or was it that
They played football and they were still able to receive scholarship yeah and I believe that a g hit it perfectly on the head you know it’s holistically viewed um even externally or internally however you want to put it it’s going to be viewed you know holistically so everyone want
To see you know who you are as a person so that’s why those estate and personal statements are very important um I know people that are just played football and they’re at morouse now and they have scholarship and they have things of that nature um and they don’t play anymore so
It’s really up to you the school is g to look every school and every schol committee is going to look at you as a whole person so they’re going want to see you know when you write who you are and things that you’ve interested in
Look at your resume they can see oh you did this and you did that you got these these grades and you may have you know interned you know use this time especially when you’re writing I told brag on yourself you know for for years you’ve had to be humble this a time
Where you tell them you know I was this this this I was on football team I played running back I was all state I had, 1500 yards and tell them like this is what you’ve done these are your accomplishments so they can know who you
Are and they be like oh we need to put him you know in this scholarship he’ be really good for this or that so this is the time where you can you know tell them all let it tell it all listen this is what I am this is what everything this is your
Time absolutely and with that you know um we talked about a lot with essays in this in this presentation um and we talked about Letter’s recommendation um what are there any tips um and any points where letters recommendations from professors they kind of came in slow you know what how
Did you keep them moving how did you ensure that they were uh going to complete that application for you when they’re taking their Lolly time and your early decision trying to trying to get this stuff done early action trying to get it done what some of the tips I
Would definitely say check in um and don’t Che check don’t go to their office and say where’s my letter recation check in like how are you been today how’s week going things of that nature so what you’re doing with that is you’re checking in and make sure they’re all
Right because we all live life you know things that nature um also a thing that I would do for our students I have mine right here it’s a box of cards you’ll get you a box of cards and start writing thank you letters to the your Prof your
Teachers espe when taking slower time because once they get it they’re GNA be like wait I haven’t finished it yet let me go ahead and finish it now so I can you know so it actually mean something to so I was big on writing cards and
Letters um and that’s how I got a lot of my recommendations was you know asking through cards and letters and things into that so kind of that Personal Touch I told you all the time everybody’s emailing a professor everyone’s emailing them iation but you can go and speak hey
I need to let a recommendation I was just wonder if you could be willing to write it you know you’ve been one of my favorite professors um bring always have a copy of your resume somewhere near because that’s what they’re going to look at 85% of the time they’re gonna
Look at your resume and say he was in this this this this and this um and they’re G to PRI you know brag when you through those things but they’re taking slow always just go check in see what’s going on um and this is a person tip for
Me I had backup people so if I had you know the math professor writing one I always had you know science professor writing one so the science one may come out faster and I can send that one or I can send both and both you know carry
Some type of weight so always ask other people letter writing is kind of difficult especially recommend because a lot of you go to you know bigger schools so you got imagine If Everyone likes Mr Patrick then everyone’s going to go to Mr Patrick so you know make those formate those
Relationships so Mr Patrick is like you know I’m only gonna write this for you so no that’s a huge Point that’s a huge point and Richard we got some more man um can you talk more about scholarships that are available to students who do unfortunately do not meet GPA minimum
Requirements some students have had circumstances happen to them them that impacted their GPA and they are working to rebuild it and still need funding can you kind of talk about that I know I can hit it from my standpoint of what I deal with on the day-to-day with students who
Um might not meet the requirement but can you kind of talk a little bit about that then I’ll I’ll come in yeah so scholarships um at their core they’re really everything so as far as they’re available for whoever whomever you are so it’s more about finding the scholarships that fit the criteria and
Then sometimes people won’t apply for scholarships right uh my mom always tell the story she applied for the scholarship and she didn’t think she was going to get it but she was the only one that applied and the way most scholarships work is it’s a tax break so
They have to give this money out every year with that if you apply maybe you don’t have the GPA and you explain you know hey this happened I don’t have the GPA but I have you know the other parts of it they still will consider you for the scholarship so just because you
Don’t have a piece doesn’t mean that you don’t have the scholarship because I know a lot of people that you know scholarships that didn’t have one part of the requirements but still got the money because they were the only ones that applied or they wrote Such a
Compelling you know essay or story and things like that you know we’ve talked about many times this thing of holistic you know and a lot of places I look at you holistically because you may not have you know the greatest grades but when you write it’s something about it
You know that really or your resume is just there so you know don’t I would say you know if you’re missing one requirement if you feel like something is you know beting down on anything like that you know always look at we’re looking holistically we’re looking at everything that you’ve done
So very good and from my point um the letter recommendation um is uh I mean in terms of your GPA you might not be able to uh have the best GPA um I’ve seen students who have gotten or received scholarships with a 2.8 GPA based on some of the
Requirements you’ll be very surprised um what I tell students all the time is that just because you didn’t come in come in morehous with a scholarship doesn’t mean you can’t retain one so I am that kind of student I didn’t come in with a merit-based scholarship but I
Definitely left with scholarships so I want you to keep in mind you can always renew right you can always go back and fight for those institutional scholarships while also applying for external scholarships even if you have a baseline GPA or GPA that might not have that 4.0 threshold that you desire um
Fight you know communicate Network those are other pieces that are very important to being able to receive scholarship dollars Richard stayed very close to the office of institutional advancement at morous College you know when I was there uh and I was enrolled I stayed very close to the office of financial aid and
I worked in the office of admissions so a lot of times when they first heard about scholarships I was one of the first students to hear about them because I was right around working in those capacities and the heartbeat of the college so you you want to network
And you want to connect but you also want to make sure that you’re eligible and that you’re also fighting finding scholarships throughout that’s a great question um someone asked when it says financial needs for scholarship what does it mean if your EFC is zero that means that you’re eligible for pretty
Much everything under the sun um in terms of scholarships and so that’s a that’s something where uh you would want to meet with financial aid and you want to make sure that you know what your EFC in this case the EFC is going to be translated as your index so make sure
You know what your SEI is in December January when you know what your financial l or fasta is because that’s going to tell you what you actually be awarded so with that kind of EFC if that’s the truth then yeah you’re eligible for a lot um so what else here
If a student is enrolled in an online program are there are there allowances made for class time that the students are working very good question Richard I’ll let you take that one if they’re enrolled in an online program so if you’re enrolled in an online program so
As far as like more housee there are you know sometimes Consignment made if you’re working I will say that you make your own schedule so if your online program meets maybe like one to two or one to three you can schedule around that time um we have a thing actually in
Our bner where when you schedule you can literally block off time so for me I know right around one o’clock if I don’t eat I’m GNA be really angry for the rest of the day I’m not you know like the Snickers bar commercial you’re not chew
When you’re hungry and trust me I’m not me when I’m hungry so what I do is usually schedule every semester to to block off that period of time so you can definitely make the schedule um in the way that you think it would help you so that’s my big greatest advice make it
Towards you I’m the cool thing about college honestly you can really manipulate how you want to so for me I like my classes to be in the morning I like him to be you know I’m cool with 8: am even though I don’t want to get up
I’m cool with 8 AM 9:00 a.m. 10: a.m. after after 12 I don’t really like class after 12 I like to be able to come back to the room take a break play video games and then right around four or five go back to doing work so that’s pretty
Much how you get pretty much just set it up around the program if that makes sense no that makes perfect sense um so we got a lot of questions coming in I love this please keep asking questions we’re here to serve you um we have a question around the early decision early
Action and it’s stemming in terms of the concept of um you know when will I be notified right and kind of around the concept of scholarships based on those timelines so first our early decision application uh you had to have your application in and submitted by November
1st to be considered for Ed or early decision which then you’re going to be informed of your decision and mcot award on December the 5th when you’re notified of that um that that particular scholarship you’ll know about but then there’ll be other scholarships once we
Know what your EFC is or index is that we’ll couple together to see what you actually qualify for so we’ll review all of that that’s not nothing you actually have to do Richard talked about the autom match process and so that’s one of the things that you’ll you’ll be able to
Do for our early action applicants some of you all are asking and I see it here you’re saying hey I got my application in during the same time time as an ed applicant or a student that apply early decision will I when will I be notified
The answer to that is January 1 we like to say on or before January 1 so we will let you know by January 1 of that decision okay um what I’m going to let you know though is that we’re looking at making sure that we have an Arsenal or a
Group of scholarships that are applicable and available between both groups so that’ll be be kind of equally and evenly distributed based on our our application pools within both groups but we’re also ensuring that we’re sticking to our deadlines so please know our notification and deadlines those can
Also be found online at our Morehouse website under the admissions tab so by all means go there to admission scroll all the way down and you’ll see our early decision early action dates and our notification periods very very important information I know we got some other questions coming in Richard um
Some of the questions for students oh oh are there any videos in simplified step-by-step application process for the NRC program and scholarships yeah so I know if there’s a certain video but I know that their application is a little bit different I know they apply um I know that all rlt
Students rltc students stay in whiteall and U they usually partner with Georgia state so they go together um I know that you cannot fail a class so that’s very important um you can you can get a c but you cannot fail a class if they are
Paying for your education and a lot of our RC students end up spending the summer in basic training so usually that I want to say that freshman to sophomore summer they go to basic training and they do more trainings as far as the Summers and things of that nature but
The rltc program is definitely a great way to pay for college if you’re interested you know in you know hopefully joining the Army and being there on the front lines for our country yes sir and there’s also with rltc you know again the resources are on our
Website so that’s going to be really important that you go to Mor house.edu and look at um the qualification for RC um our branch is also connected um with Spelman Clark Lan University and the other uh in Georgia State as well as Georgia Tech um so make sure you go on
Their websites and see how more El is Affiliated as such so that’s going to be really really important um you guys are asking amazing questions we really appreciate it um so some of the questions we have is um I like to understand the process of of becoming an
RA and the benefits offered if selected are there scholarships or tuition awards for raas talk about it man yeah so I’m an RA now um so as an RA you receive free housing and a free meal plan um the meal plan comes with five swipes a week in the cafeteria but 730
Dining Dollars which can be used on any of our four on campus eies five on campus e sorry I’m getting old um so yeah it’s definitely a great program to join I will say I’m already I stayed in Brazil Hall freshman year which is the greatest Hall ever built at
Mor’s College it is the most beautiful building um it is a building that just glistens and glows when the Sun hits it so I’ll digress again but I stayed in Brazil Hall and I came back and became an r in Brazil Hall um one of the cool
Min I say besides the money part and the uh scholarship which is I I guess the biggest part of it you do get you know a single room so in my room if I gave you the tour which I’m not gonna do because behind me looks you know set up for me
But you do have you know king-size bed so you can put two twins together nice big bed two desks two dressers two closet so you can really do a lot with the space um but you already know required to you know do what we call the
Race which is the ra race which starts it’s actually starting now so it starts in November and you’ll get picked right around I want to say April to May you’ll be picked to be the ra and they’ll tell you where you’re staying in the draft so
Each year the directors or R res this directors get together and draft who the RAS are gonna be so from what I heard it’s a lot of trading a lot of you know no I want him or things of that nature so yeah it’s definitely a good program
If you’re interested definitely apply to be an RA you can apply after you apply during your freshman year but you become an RA you’re sophomore through senior year you can become an RA definitely apply definitely apply I’m telling you man ra that’s that’s work too man should
We be applying the more house if the fastf isn’t yet available yes yes yes and more yes why because I told you there are scholarships that are not depicted just on the fast f and because of the fact that we want to make sure that we know
Where you are in your process okay that’s really really important um the application is open apply it is free application month for those who live in Georgia I’ll say it again it’s free application month for those who live in Georgia so go to morehouse.edu and apply
What I am happy I see is that there’s a lot of you who have already applied lied uh by the questions we’re getting which is phenomenal um that’s going to be really really really important um I’m gonna plug this as well this Saturday we do
Have an open house um you know space is limited um you know Richard what are the the amazing things about open house what what would you say the amazing things about open house open house is a time to really I’d say look at how morouse operates look at the things that you can
Learn um you all be greeted by the greatest team on Earth that is the our ambassador team we’re excited to see you all we get to spit time it kind of show you why we came to morous um also at the end you know we have a basketball game
Going going and we have a lacrosse game at the same literally so we have a two o’clock basketball game and three o’clock lacrosse game but I think open house just a time for you to you know sit and kind of like look at our campus and realize you know maybe this is the
Place maybe I can make more house my home so awesome and so to Reg to register for open house right now you have the ability to do that it’s free we’re gonna have great breakfast I mean waffles and stuff like that it’s gonna be nice um
We’re also going to be there’s a game two games actually going on uh that we want to make sure you’re plugged in and you know about so by all means we want you to definitely be uh ready to get that information if you go and you visit morehouse.edu openhouse morehouse.edu
House you can register right now and you definitely want to come see what we have kick the dirt and see the players it’s really really awesome someone say how can I apply to be an RA it sounds like something i’ be really extremely interested in so Richard you got one man
So um applying to Via ra it’s really it’s really simple you start through the informational and you get the application once you get the application um they’ll pick from the application tool who’s going to keep moving on so I kind of think of it like as tear once
You keep moving on you have classes you have to go to um you’ll have different things you have to go to and you have to meet their criteria it is important that you are early to everything when it comes to applying to be a ra um I know
When I went I got there like 5:45 it started at 6 at six o’clock they started slamming doors and they’re like you know if you can’t be on time for this meeting how do I know you’re gonna show up when it’s time to be at R right so definitely
Be on time but definitely a uh interesting application we have a high ref which is definitely something that you you I’ll let you experience when you apply to VI but it’s a cool thing to do very very cool we got one of our alums from Jacksonville Florida who’s on
The call Mark register appreciate you Mark um he’s he’s very plugged into rltc so definitely you know reach out to our Jacksonville Florida Chapter uh as well man it’s good see you brother um I definitely want to make sure that uh that we answer a couple of other
Questions and there was one that was really geared towards this idea of um applying I think it was applying early decision hold on oh since fastf comes out late this year what scholarship should early decision students be looking at considering that we aren’t sure how much money we’re
Looking at yeah so definitely plug in to us uh and when I say us I mean the recruitment team um I would definitely make sure you all have my information um because I know we’re at time unfortunately I I I think Richard could stay on for probably another what three
Hours man and go uh but we’re not going to do that to y’all because y’all’s time is precious um how well are the kids prepared or paired with prospective roommates oh how well are the kids paired with prospective roommates you would do a housing application right Richard yes so it’s a housing
Application there’s a survey and pretty much from there they use a survey to see who you are so things of that nature um usually try to apply people that are 100% to 100% matches just so there won’t be as many you know arguments I will say our first year students are placed in
Halls by their respective Majors um here at moras col we not have dormitories we have halls and houses and centers so we do not use the word dormatory here but I stayed in Brazil Brazil is a stem Hall so science technology engineering and math all of the stem Majors stay in
Brazil most of our business business majors stay in the boy international house most of our Arts Majors stay in Hubert hall or the soul House of what effectually known as so it’s definitely uh paired greatly they try to make sure that the people are as alike as possible
So there aren’t you know any bad blood or beef or things of that nature that’s perfect perfect perfect well Richard any closing words um I’ll let you let you in um I want to thank you all so much for coming out tonight thank you all for just allowing us opportunity to you know
Pour into you I think Rich might there you go Richard say it one more time oh I said you know stand the fight keep fighting um always keep applying make sure that you’re you know first and top and making sure that everything that you uh you’re
Working for is to you know make sure that you have the money to pay for college but not only pay for college but get that Covenant refund check um so you can have money for you know things you enjoy like Jordans and new polo sweatsuits and things of that nature so
Just make sure you keep applying keep being a student of the game and all things in life and more importantly thank you all so much for allowing us opportunity awesome and we’re gonna follow with any questions that we might have missed um thank you all so much for
Having us have a wonderful evening um contact the connect with the morouse College admissions office so we can answer all your questions to ensure that we get everything answered thank you for the for allowing us to have this session I think this session is recorded which
Is great so we will or you will be able to have this as a resource as well thank you all so much have a wonderful Evening
