Achievement No sacrifice was too great for our parents to make for Education they told us education many black parents didn’t have to S their children to college some of these children work their way through college washing dishes in the cafeteria mowing lawns working as Maids pumping gas string floors and Performing other
We thank God for people who bestow institutions of higher education to their children there are over 100 historical historically black colleges and universities in the United States Chene state is the oldest black college founded in 1837 H amen we remember the founding of black fraternities and sororities and their contribution to our communties we remember professors and administrators of vision they filled us with knowledge and taught us black history a people without knowledge of Their Own hist is 1943 the president of Institute Dr Frederick D Patterson
Initiated the United Negro College to raise money to support black stents the majority of black college graduates have attended historically black colleges and universities often these students were the first members of their families to attend college call to sustain institutions of higher education for future Generations Dr Benjamin ma believed that
The primary task of black colleges is to build character God help us to remain ever conscious of the quality of fruit our people be not to support and Str black schools black colleges and universities thanks be to you now I will talk about for a brief moment the importance of attending
HC as you all know I attend for the past two years Virginia state universi and two things that feels though are important to me at this moment are opportunity and network the reason I say I mention opportunity is because there’s a wide wide variety of things that we know nothing about but if
You attend other schools bigger networks larger opportunities can be bestowed upon even in in the art um department or any other departments you never know until you ask or until you put yourself out there yeah because unfortunately in my University the art Department isn’t that strongly well
Known we’re getting there but how long is it going to take it’s going to be after I’m gone it’s going to be five years seven a whole another decade the time starts now for the opportunity to put yourself out there and the other thing is networking putting
Yourself in a company in which you keep I’m grateful enough to be in the art department at HBC and seeing people in what I in doing what I love look just like me because when you hear animation you think that’s for the other people when you think of art that’s for the
Other people it’s rare to see people that look like me in my field but the problem is it’s still unknown it’s not well Known and then it’s about the teachers like we just talked about the professors the administrators I’m grateful enough to have a specific Professor named Professor William Johnson the only black Professor B had this far in the art department and the one thing he always tells us is a push
Keep pushing keep doing all that you can because they see something you that you have not seen and every single day it just hits different for some reason hearing it from someone that looks like you to tell you push it’s like you hear from someone else yeah you hear it but
You hear somewhere else hear from someone that looks like you be like oh do something I need to do something about so those those are just the two important things to me when it comes to attending HBCU you just got to push have take the opportunity take the
Initiative out no one else no one else is going to do it for you College you have to do it for I to tell you and Daddy here you got to take the initiative you got to push and also you got to find your network you got to find the you got find
The people who are working as hard as you to get to where they need to be Al so push find the opportunity Find the network and that’s how you get [Applause] [Applause] than the presence of the sweatshirts that we see and even those ones that are not seen are just a reflection of the fact that the God we serve is not locked in in
This if you let God he can speak to you wherever you are in the classroom at the h CE other if you let go he can speak to you wherever you are I’m reminded of a moment in my own education I was taking a music theory
Class and those of you who are my table folk you know my M table baby I’ve been here born in one of these pews somewhere I’ve always been a part of the music department and I was always in b is in music and the theory teacher was talking about certain
Musicians that he saw were special musicians that he called Golden Ears and he went down the list of what those kind of musicians do and what they hear and how they hear it and as he was talking God was speaking to me yeah you’ve been doing this since you were
Little it’s something I gave you listen to him inscri the gifts I gave and I just thought everyone who played the instrument heard what I heard I thought everyone who play the instrument thought perceive the way I perceive and God in that moment said now you different and I need you to
Understand I made you different and he didn’t tell me that while I was in here directed he didn’t tell me that while I was in Bible study he told me that classroom and we see you so you let God use you you let God speak to you he can speak to you whever
You are you my God we are thankful that you are not bound to anyone building thank you you are not bound to in any particular space but wherever we set our feet as your children God that’s where you are we are thankful that you can follow
Us and speak to us in the middle of a grocery store you can speak to us in the middle of traveling down 95 whatever we are God if we have a heart for you God you will and can speak to us and that’s just lets us know that
There is no situ we cannot handle and give to you God it is not by our strength that we succeed it’s by Yours with the spirit moving that everyone in here can testify that they have been on some kind of Battlefield with and for you God and we are thankful that we are here to testify that we made it through every last one of those battles may have some Stars may have
Some bruises but we are still here and we are still able to fight for you because you are the kind of God that will fight with us wherever we go Petersburg Hamilton South America Africa wherever we are God you are there right there alongside us we are never
Alone in our battles we are never alone in our ministry we are never alone in our striving God when we push you are pushing right there with us God you’re in front of us you’re beside us you’re behind us giving is everything we need to do as that young lady just said keep
Pushing whether we’re in the classroom whether we’re in the boardroom whether we’re in the hospital room Lord you are right there with us so we pray that you give us the strength to keep pushing pray that you give us the faith to never quit because you’ve never quit on us and
We are thankful for that Lord use us For Your Glory wherever we are use us to shine the light for you wherever we are that your word might go forth and that someone somewhere might see us and see you and want to have that relationship with you and your son Jesus Christ that
We have that no matter what the circumstances may look like no matter what the situation is we can keep on pushing keep on striving keep on working keep on fighting Battlefield because of the god that we serve and let them know that they can get to know you and serve
You and keep on and keep on fighting and keep on striving just like we do because you are the kind of God that can work on more than one person in more than one place all at the same time and get it all done with magnificence and
Excellence so thank you for being that kind of God and help us to be those kind of servants that always point the light to you that we can keep on pushing and others can push right along us in your son’s name we pray Amen Amen Let the church say amen amen let Church Say Amen again amen celebrating on this first Sunday in black history father we’re grateful for what God has continued to do in our lives want to present our preacher for today Reverend Dr marich a native of Arington Virginia

Right I GRE your pastor my dear friend your bride and the whole everybody my husband Pastor Reverend Darnell Adam SE Brothers out there in power at Ser this morning he at the Green Brian Baptist Church he would say I’m talking to l d and so I bring you greetings on behalf
Of him and our family I also want to say to those of you today who hail from that place where the the warm mellow sunlight is shining and the trees like great Sentinels stand I heard it said they guarding our dear Al the pride of Virginia’s L our heart from Virginia State Virginia
State huh h but because I’m not going to get in trouble no there is that finds 1500 North Lombardi Street in Richmond Virginia and I would be remissed I would be completely out of order if I did not bring you briefs on behalf of our president Dr hakeim J Lucas and his
Entire cabinet all of the faculty all of the staff and even all of our wonderful students I bring you greetings Mount tab on their [Applause] behalf I am not going to Endeavor to be before you long but there is a word from the Lord and if you don’t mind finding
Your way over to the 44th song you know this is song book amen somebody the CH Musician amen so in the 44th Psalm selection number 44 we find these words now I have different versions that I prefer but today I’m going to use the King James if that’s all right use whatever translation of the text that makes sense to you that you can understand amen somebody because there’s
Nothing holy about a text you can’t understand so this song begins with these words we have heard with our ears oh God our ancestors our fathers and our mothers have told us what work thou did in their days in the time old how you drove out the Heathen with
Your hand and how you planted them how thou this afflict the people and cast them out for they got not the land in possession by their own sword neither did their own arm save them but thy right hand and thy arm yeah and the light of thy
Count because thou had favor on them let us pray for just a few moments as we encourage one another to keep telling the story let us pray wise Everlasting and eternal we thank you for the gift that is this day we thank you for the gift that is this great church and these
Great people we thank you God for the story that has called them into being and we thank you God for the tasks that are still yet at hand but we pause long enough to give you glory for all that is already been done so now I ask again
That you would do what you often have done with me won’t you cleanse me again with this won’t you separate the me that you need from the me that you know won’t you forgive me for all of M my all of my humanity and just for these moments let
Your your people hear what you have to say to us that we might live and not die so God please once more let the words of my mouth and the very sincere meditations of my heart can be acceptable in your sight of because I declare that you alone are my
Strength and you alone are my redeemer and it is in Jesus’s name that I pray amen amen beloved I want to encourage us to keep telling the story I want to First greet you with a word that is a Zulu word I saw it up on the screen and it
Got so delighted Pastor p and I were looking at each other like yes yes and that word Isani won’t you sayani is a Zulu word it means we see you it means we see all of you here that means we see your past we see your history we see your
Ancestors we see all of you and we respect you all of you and you are important to us now in the US I mean me and my ancestors I mean my grandmother my grand daddy my great grandparents we see all of you and yours and we respect you and we honor
You and you are important to us because beloved we could not be without you and I would like to think you could be without but beloved February often marks this time where we have agreed to come together and focus on our history we do understand that we are a people
365 the necessity of the month was not for us to pay attention but more so to allow other people the opportunity to see that we know that we are about business hallah to remind our children that we’ve always been about business to allow others to see that not
Only were our faith Traditions good before Missionary not only did God serve us and carry us and deler us before missionary but we thank the God who preserved our minds even during child we thank God who kept our hearts and our minds together in the hush way down by myself when I couldn’t hear nobody pray I’m talking about when
The church was wasn’t in the edifice but it was down amongst the trees I mean when there was a a pot in the midle and you bow down over the pot huh I’m talking about when we knew that God moved in the trees and God moved in the
Wind and God moved by telling us what to take from this tree and mix with this and put it all together to bring your blood pressure and your blood trigger down we always about this month has been set aside to remind other people but beloved is also about calling
Back to our remembers our old old story sometimes we get caught up in what’s popular what’s current and what’s trending sometimes we get caught up in our cultural critics who say to us that our faith is just an opioid it’s just to keep us calm and dle
Is trying to keep us at B trying to keep us little what could be can beloved we’ve got to tell the stories we have to remember the story of nant who gathered with women now this is not a bad man thing so don’t y don’t y’all start acting [Applause]
Funny it’s just the story we’ve got to tell and we tell this story because we need to be encouraged again as a people so when the British had come and they were want to capture the king king prit none of y’all son to gathered with the women to see what was going to
Happen they gathered around while the chiefs were making PL and they were Miss what’s the plan to rescue the king and when she didn’t hear one n of Y Sant said to the Chiefs you all stay here and you all old women y’all tend to children while me and the other
Men I’m going to go get the king so she in a group of women armed themselves and they took off after the bridge because they were going to go get the cake now your homework is to go find out about that’s your homework we’re not talking about HBCU for no
Reason huh because beloved if somebody thinks that they can run off with your stuff somebody say if they think they can run off with your history if they can think can run off with your king run off with your story shake it up and give it back to
You in a way that you just think is fantastic that you don’t criticize you don’t critique at all and find out all you’ve been learning has been a lot and you paid for the privilege that’s why we got to keep telling the story every year during black history
Month and the month of April and May my family forced us I’m going say forced us all my family that’s listening you did that’s what you did my grandparents my parents my aunts and uncles who were Educators called all of the grandchildren together we had to sit on the floor you all know
The we sat on the floor and we all watched television together and we were Watching movies and documentaries about the Civil Rights struggle we watched as people who look like us like my sister from Vu said that look like us being attacked by police dogs this was not the censored version we saw the dogs grabing home to flesh while they were being held not
Restrain but they were held by the hands of those who were supposed to protect and serve we saw where vital resources of water that should be reserved for burning buildings were turned on people people with such force that it pushed the people down the street am I here by [Applause]
Myself and as children we had to watch it tearing in our own eyes but when we look behind us our grandparents were WIP in their eyes our parents were sniffling because they remembered being in the Place they remember worn out shoe L for marching they remember the stench of houses being set on fire with whole families inside while firefighters well firers stood and watch refusing to go in and save a soul yeah beloved we have ancestral memory and we are being charged to keep the
History but to tell our children the story sometimes we don’t tell the story because it’s too painful sometimes we don’t tell the story because it may seem embarrassing we may not tell the story because we don’t wanted to be known that we are even a part of
Them come on on we don’t want anybody to believe that we could never drink out of a water fountain and so beloved what some of us did was move to the birve and Left Behind the community that n Left Behind the school that was in the basement of the
Church and took our children over to monor and some other places we left Sunday school and we left you know Easter pieces you all remember Easter pieces you all know that Easter Sunday their children would have their program and they would have the pieces that they were given back in February and March
And they needed to be able to recite them when they came forward you all know what I’m talking we left the uses of our enes for the purposes of education for what we thought were Greener Pastor not realizing that all is not good for every Soul beloved when we look at even the history of many of our black churches many of us are historic black churches many of us are over 150 years old many of us started out as places of education and then became places of worship how do I know as I served as a
Pastor down in Antioch past Baptist Church down in Susan Virginia down in M County they started out as the school the mothers of children went to ask their husbands their boyfriends their boo their fellas their back who were down in the forest down in the woods gambling and playing Cs And doing what [Applause] Do and the women ask their men they said we need you to build a school for our children because if there are laws on the book that say our babies cannot read I want to know what this read is all about if there are long prohibiting our babies from learning when they
Know I need you to build a school they didn’t ask for permission from the county a lady in the community said you can have this they said every thank you and be building and once the children were going to school then the women they said you know we can have prayer
Meeting in the church it’s empty so they began to have prayer and as it would happen auntie I I’m telling you a story as it would happen these women went back to the brothers they were down the Forest they were doing what they did so well and the women said to the brothers go find us a preacher now I was always tickled by the fact that the brothers knew where to find a preacher cuz these brothers were already telling the whole I’m Christianity that
I we about all that but they knew the preacher somebody say amen and they got the preacher he said resource I hate you they got the preacher and the preacher came to the church and then they began having worship Services while they were having school and then they built a Rosa roll
School right across the street when we were having some difficulty with the flooring I said well let’s go underneath the building and see what’s causing the problem the people said to me at the time you can’t go up under there I said well then I’m going to ask very kindly somebody
With a camera to go so I can see what’s holding all this thing up and I want you to know what I saw I saw handmade bricks that have been Shaped and stack And Shes and St and the only thing between the floor of the church and the soil of the ground were these bricks made my hand how many pound had these bricks Bor how much of a weakness would they be for the B how many times would they say that the P were coming through beloved how many times would they tell the story beloved we have got to continue to tell the story just because we are here in Richmond Virginia when some people erroneously call the Cal babies listen
I’m putting a plug for this movie it’s called origin sisters the wonderful a the morning name and in a part of this movie there’s a depiction where a man is saying that here in Germany we do not have any symbol of the non we don’t have any Monuments of anybody who triy to destroy our Nation Beloved who we do it who would do it why would they do it what are they trying to teach us what are you saying to us do we ever pause long enough to ask the First Nation to tell us the story the chief
W the were of the palan nation yeah the people that were here first what would they say have we asked them to tell us the old old story because beloved there is one there is a because if we look around right now where do you see evidence of there having Been is it on artist street is it down there on Jefferson is it on 25th Street somewhere on 21st no we don’t see but we know that it existed So beloved I am going to issue another homewor find out who was here before You and what happened to them and what can we learn from their presence and from their invisibility because you do know that just because you don’t see see me that me I’m not here come on because beloved we have heard with our own ears oh God our ancestors have told
Us the work that you did beloved we cannot hold this present generation accountable for what they do not know we cannot hold them responsible for what they do not know we cannot charge into their accounts that they don’t know about our black inventors they don’t know about senators
And Congress persons who serve right after slav it’s not their fault that they don’t know that there were whole towns of black [Applause] people that if you go to them now they’re late inates cover upy destroy come on it’s not their fault but I don’t mind if you don’t mind God forgive
Me for every time I thought what was over there was better than what I had over here forgive me for all the times that I thought that good old bread was better than this buttermilk soap cornbread when I was not so keen on eating poted Meat and I think I wanted the rich because Sal forgive me for every time I did not sit my child down and say I heard what they told you but let me tell you the real story let me tell you about Al the name of Afric let me tell you about the peoples and the languages of our ancestor before Nigeria becomes
Nigeria before the continent is cared up and GH becomes and Ben becomes B yeah before certain countries are always speaking French or Dutch or Spanish Portuguese before it was all carved up and the people were trying to be divided forgive me for every time I acted like poring liation
Was anti- God and antichristian on I’m going say this way because some sometimes and I don’t know how you all did it but sometimes when a person died we would take a little something yeah you take a little S and we pour it out the some pour it out on the concrete and just watched it kind of just dissolve was going to go there’s a group of standing that had a song called This is for my homies in that Sal I was s like Su [Applause] morning
But beloved I want you to know that the more that I learned the more that I read the more I came to understand pouring of liation is when we take water and we pour water into living soil and we pour the water into the living soil so that more life might come from
It when I learn that we can pour in honor of the founders of this great church we can pour in honor of the Sunday School teachers who tunch you so well we can pour in the honor of those who lay down in the Cornerstone it it’s not the same as worshiping
Ancestors it’s not the same the more that I learn the more that I study the more that I exposed myself to what was unfamiliar it became to sit down in me is girl you know this we don’t worship our ancestors we honor them we rever them we thank
Them for what they did that we might be we got to keep telling the story because otherwise somebody’s going to make you think your truth is a Lie beloved there’s no such thing as a witch doct I don’t care who Expedition we I don’t care how many videos they show because a witch and a doctor are not the same a witch Cur and doctors he they’re not the same thing we have to be the ones to tell the
Story but this text is speaking from a people who reminded themselves and reminded their God that we know who you are our ancestors told us they told us what you did on their behalf how you Clos the mouth Li they told us how you rounded out the enemy how you
Made them come to nothing they told us who you are beloved our ancestors have told us what a mighty God we serve our ancestors told us how great God faithfulness they told us if you keep your hand in the hand of the man who Ste the
W they told us that our God was a [Applause] bridge what else what else Morning Star What promise keeper they told us they told us what they knew and what they believed and they had the evidence the Young Folks would say they have receipts they had the rece belov I don’t know how many of you used to play sports and pay out in the
Neighborhood I don’t I don’t know but I used to like to watch the folks play in my neighborhood back in Harlington and they would be over on the playground and my mama didn’t think it was a good idea for me to be on the so I over
There when she was saying something like don’t let me [Applause] catch see some young folks today she didn’t really say you could she said [Applause] you same thing she like to watch them play and one thing that my cousins used to always F out they might walk up on the on the court while the game is already playing and they were come like they hey hey got next okay on the okay table who got
Next we going play R and fly who got that the ancient ones had we have now we are now what happens next the Young Folks you got [Applause] next but in order for them to do well with what [Applause] [Applause] next now what you go do now [Applause] Jesus and I’m on my way back to I’m on my way I’m gone but I want you to remember your homework and then I went the Young Folks Young Folks I know y I’m need you to stand up all the Young Folks all
Around all the young folks that in b stand on your feet I for You I want you to hold us accountable I want you to make sure that we do what God called us to do by you I want you to ask us the question who is I want you to ask us who found I want you to hold us to what we’re supposed to
Do there’s a college that said we see a fire in you and we going to hold your feet to but I want you to hold accountable those of us committed to building the fire we got the building blocks we got the C we got the wood from our
Ancestors and if there’s no fire being built the 41st song in the H book of the Israelites said that we heard with our own ears our ancestors told us what you did for them in their day yeah and beloved while we are having t-shirts with our baby faces on While it’s even a real conversation about the Election while we’re still playing fast and with this gospel come on say it while we are spending more time effort and energy laughing at people who are pretending to be preachers and worship leaders who don’t know how to get into the Throne we got to keep telling the Story we have to tell it it’s our Legacy it’s our birth and then I’m going leave you there was a tobacco t-shirt that they came out with many years ago when I was still in high school probably maybe even in middle school and when I saw the
Shirt my mother was like you’re not wearing that shirt and the front of the shirt said a line with pleasure whatever the cigarette brand was but what I loved about the shirt was not the cigarettes stuff on the front but on the back of the shirt it said the
Black of the college the sweet of the knowledge and it has a listing of every single HBCU in the Nation and I was trying to rock that shirt for all I was worth because beloved I still believe and the chief musician I agree I was over ATC for minute and we can learn from every because if you are a part of that nation that built the library is over in
Alexandri not the highway inex over EGP if you built the libraries where others from around the world can’t you learn certainly you can learn but there’s something about that HBC you something about being in a place where the bricks are hand something about being in a place that comes out of a
Place of depravity and neglect and rejection Virginia you University comes out of lum’s jail yes it does the most notorious slave jail on the Eastern SE Robert Lumin was able to train his dogs how to get away from and to be immune to Peppa so that when enslaved people were trying to run and we were dropping
Pepper behind us so the dogs would stop following us they could get around he taught them how to chase our people up trees his wife Mary Lumin was a fair complexion black woman and it was almost unheard of that he would even marry a black
Woman but the fact is that he did and they had children and when he died and the war was over there are no chance encounters how many of you all believe That but as Mrs Lumin was walking down the street she ran into Dr Nathaniel c a white gentleman from up North he was trying to find a place to educate newly free black men Mary Lin said well I got a spot you and she sold Lin’s jail to
Him but now keep in mind that Lumin jail was not just a jail there was a hotel yeah there was a t repair shops right down from church here when Pastor kenry came running through talking about some we this son Give me liberty or give me death he was sh to
The rooftops but down byot come on the folks that look ja give me Nathaniel K was teaching in the slave J from the Le turn that been whing Po in the woods was skin and blood in the ground blood and the men came and they learned and
Then the rest of everybody’s homeor all together is to read the history of Virginia Union University and see how Haron comes together and how other schools come together to build the union Virginia and then when you pick up the history of nor state is nor State Enough then you can celebrate the Virginia Union history CU that’s your mom and then you can celebrate with that Girl Bel I just want to leave this with you if you would if you love your HBC if you love love the professors who taught you if you love the days that you spent on that sacred Hill I’m going to ask you they may have asked you may put it in trash I’mma ask you they may have called you may have just said I a asking I’m ask you I’m going to ask you to send a gift to your HBC and the gift that I want you to send
Is a gift that says thank you thank you for who you are thank you for what you’ve done for me I would not be able to have this career that I have if it had not been for you send them a gift that says thank
You for that will you do it oh come on you do it then you’ll be able Say you say Still May for be dear we still [Applause] love stay with me thank God for that message thank God for the messenger is allowing your to be used to speak to us God has placed in her spirit amen amen we extend the invitation to Christian disciple ship we’re so
