A great opportunity for students is happening on Friday in Montgomery County. It’s the H BC U College Fair and I’m joined now by Doctor Karen Cruz. She’s the Director of Student Well Being and Achievement for Montgomery County Schools. Good morning to you. Welcome to the show. Good morning. Good to have you here.
All right. So first of all, we’re talking about the H BC U Fair. This is not the first time, but for those who are out there watching and may want to come tell us how it works. How does a parent and student, how do parents and students get involved?
So, in order to get involved, we need all parents and students to register on our MC psh BC U website and we have the registration on event bright. Um This is our 16th H BC U Fair for Montgomery County Public Schools. So we are super excited. All right. So
How many schools we got coming this time? We have about 41 H BC U, 25 organizations. That’s, that’s, that’s great. So a lot of times because I’ve been to this before. My school has been represented before and we recruit So the benefit for students being there is educational and sometimes financial as well.
Absolutely. So we will have the Divine Nine which makes up all of the nine African American fraternities and sororities. They will be there talking about all of their scholarship opportunities. Um We’re also gonna have many, many uh organizations there who will talk about all the scholarship opportunities that they have.
In addition to that, we have workshops where students and families can hear about all of the financial aid um scholarship opportunities. And our special guest is the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and they have many, many scholarships and they’re gonna learn more about all of those things as well. OK.
And then I know at some of the fairs you can also get accepted on the spot by some of the schools if you’re a senior and you bring uh your materials and your, your senior materials and they look at it because I know in the past that’s what we’ve,
We’ve done it at, at my school and a lot of students are, are excited about that because they like, ok, I get the information and I can decide on the spot if I can get accepted into the schools. Yes, some of the H BC us will be providing on the spot,
But we actually did something different this year. We decided to do our on the spot interviews throughout the entire fall. So we had interviews from September all the way through January, we had about 350 students that actually receive on the spot admissions and $7 million
Worth of scholarships were given out any of those kids last name Martin because I’m gonna need that. Uh listen in our last couple of seconds here. Why do you think this is so important? Oh, this is so important because we don’t want any student to leave an MC PS high
School and say they didn’t know anything about what an A H BC U is. What is a historically black college university? This is an event that we do every year and we do this for students in eighth grade through 12th grade deliberately so that students can learn about H BC US and
Know more about what opportunities exist at an H BC U. All right. Well, thank you very much for coming in and uh sharing your, your information and educating the public about this. We appreciate your time. We uh have some of that information available.
If people forget where to go, it’s uh it’ll be on the uh county, on your county. Montgomery County’s website. Just go there, look it up. We’ll have it all for you. All right. Thank you very much. Thank you. Appreciate it. All right. It’s weather time.
