Because I have very strong feelings regarding this particular topic and that topic is whether or not school is important University I mean right so we all know that grade school is important and there’s even a trend of a lot of people homeschooling their kids pulling them out of school so that they can
Learn at home and teach them entrepreneurship and things of that nature and I get that I understand the sentiment behind it but I think it loses something so let’s start with that right let’s start with grade school in grade school and middle school and high school
Yes the school system is not perfect yes if you can afford to homeschool your kids chances are you can afford to send them to a better school yes there are programs and things of that nature for instance my daughter goes to a public high school happens to be one of the
Best high schools in the area she’s in the nursing program so she’s going to come out of high school with nursing program experience Nursing education medical education already in her head right plus it gives her some college credit so that she can advance a little bit faster in school these kinds of
Things are critical right but people will say I’m gonna take my kids out of school and I’m G to teach them at home because I want to teach them things that the school doesn’t teach them and I get that I understand that but here’s some of the things that you’re taking away
From them one of them is I believe critical thinking in environments right so you know it’s one thing to be able to be peacefully in your living room or in your you know office or dining table wherever it is that you homeschool your kids it’s another thing and and and for
Them to think critically right critical thinking and and it’s another thing to me to be able to do that same thing but in a room full of kids some good bats and pain in the ass teacher talking still and still be able to process information and utilize critical
Thinking at a high level right but now let’s forget about that because it’s not real the real topic now I’m listening to people who are successful in the industry they did it through or in their Industries they did it through social media they did it through building a Big
Brand they got the Gary v’s and all these other people who are out there saying things like you know college is a scam college is just wants your money um you know there it doesn’t do anything for you uh you know just get into entrepreneurship you know you could
like lock in big money and you don’t need school to do that and there are parts of that that are true right um I’m not going to completely take that away from them but what I will take away is the ideology that everyone who doesn’t go to college has this like
Mental fortitude to become an entrepreneur because being an entrepreneur is not easy it’s not easy work this is like one of the hardest jobs in the world to be an entrepreneur Elon Musk said it himself I talk about it in my book The Truth About failure Elon mus said it himself in an
Interview asked what would you tell young entrepreneurs trying to come up in the industry today he looked at the at his interviewer and said do not do it this is the most painful thing you can do this is this is hard it’s exhausting I am tired and it is not normal right
And so to assume that all of people in the world can choose to not go to school and become this successful entrepreneur is to assume that everyone can jump really really high and everyone can run you know a four-minute mile and everyone could you know uh uh drive race cars
Around the track and everyone could be a star basketball player and everyone could it’s exactly the same everyone can be an NFL pick like it’s exactly the same thing now being an entrepreneur is very difficult I’ve been an entrepreneur for many years years I’ve built companies I’ve sold companies I’ve I’ve
I’ve I’ve done things that are incredible to me but it has not been easy it has not been easy and if I didn’t have the background that I do have so let me give you a little bit of of me I spent you know nine years in United States Marine Corps post high
School and while I was in the Marine Corps I earned a bachelor degree well almost a bachelor’s degree and then when I got out I finished my bachelor’s degree and then I used my GI Bill to get a master’s degree I graduated with my basts with full-time jobs okay like
Active duty Marine Corp part-time job as a bartender and going to school full-time along with getting out of the military having to work in the civilian world and go to school and graduated with my bachelor klow and my master’s degree in Business international business and so what that did for me is
It gave me a footing in the industry it gave me a footing to get a job coming out of the military it gave me a tremendous advantage AG where I would not have had those Advantage just with my military background right and so so
When I when I bring this up you know and I listen to people talking that nature it pisses me off a little bit because what you’re telling young individuals is don’t go to school and become a YouTube Star bro like they can be a YouTube
Star and still go to school I was in the Marine Corps had a part-time job and still went to school I was a civilian and had a job and had a family and had kids and still went to school so why are you going to these young people and
Telling them that school is irrelevant that’s a waste of money and come over here and just become an entrepreneur you’re full of and I can’t stand you for saying that and I said it out loud and if you’re Gary ve or whoever else believes this I’m telling you full
Of and honestly if you can’t take that I’m sorry may you know whatever like I appreciate a million things that you say that’s not one of them you know now I decided I’m going to Google some stuff because I’m not just going to put my emotions into it so I went to Google
And I said employment ratio for people who have a degree versus not a do do not have a degree and yes I said employment because again we’re saying that every saying that everyone has the capability the fortitude and the mindset to be an entrepreneur is like saying everyone can
Be first draft pick at the NFL right and so college graduates this is what it gave me it said college graduates are half as likely to be unemployed as their peers who have only have a high school degree right typical earnings for a bachelor’s degree holder are 36,000 or
84% higher than those with the highest degree in a high school diploma or those that than those whose highest degree is a high school diploma so so this is what it’s saying got a college degree versus got a high school diploma college degree you’re half as likely to be unemployed
Not only are you half as likely to be unemployed but also likely to earn 84% more than the person without a college degree with a high school diploma right that’s one thing that I came up with this is like it gets better right okay then I asked Google why do employers
Prefer college graduates why would an employer look at a college graduate now I’ll give you my opinion but it fell very close to what Google gave me it said companies often prefer college degrees over experience in the field because they are looking for candidates with certain levels of education and not
Knowledge because college degrees demonstrate that an individual has completed a rigorous program of study which is often seen as a sign of dedication and hard work now if you’ve been to college and you’ve been to University and you have a bachelor or Associates or Masters or doctorates you
Know that it is not easy work you know that it is long nights of studying it is long nights of writing papers it is long nights of reading right there’s a ton of reading involved there’s a ton of writing involved there’s a ton of arithmetic involved there’s a ton of
Language involved there’s a there there’s so much stuff involved that changes you mentally as a person right now likely you’ve got entrepreneurs that say okay well Dave read two books a month right all right who knows to you read two books and mon but never write a thing right so like college
Makes you not only read but it makes you think and it makes you report on your readings and it makes you write it up and it like it creates skill skills in you through dedication and hard work okay and so when I look at people to
Hire I would rather hire someone with a degree and lesser experience than someone with a ton of experience and no degree because it shows me which one of the two has been massively dedicated and and put in hard work to a significant goal right now I could be wrong the
Person with no degree and and and some field experience might have set a million goals and achieved them all right but there’s nothing to documented that could show me otherwise now if they can document it and show me otherwise maybe it’s a different story like hey
David I you know I coded and built this whole thing and I did this and I did that and blah blah and this is what it did for this company and so forth so on great I’ll use that as a metric but if I’m going paper for paper my metric’s
Going to be that degree because it shows the dedication that it took to get get through that four year or six year or eight year or 10 year process right now then I went on and it said I decided I was going to go to um education versus experience why do
People want more so um it gave me a bunch of different things there’s a shift in the norm you know etc etc etc and I said okay cool I can accept that but then I went to what everybody’s going to right now Chad GPT and I said Chad
GPT why do top 10 reasons why employers prefer a college graduate over a high school graduate and this is what it gave me number one higher level of Education college graduates have typically completed a more advanced level of Education which suggests a deeper knowledge and understanding of their
Field of study cool great yeah we all get that right you can also get that that through skill right like constant skill going out there and working and so forth so on right number two specialized skill and knowledge college education often prefers more specialized skills and knowledge in a particular field
Which can be directly applicable to certain jobs like if I’m hiring for HR I want somebody who studied HR right if I’m hiring for management maybe I want somebody that has business management skills uh a leadership skills in their degree right there are specialized skills that I’m looking for in someone
For the position that I am trying to fill critical thinking and problem solving skills that’s number three remember we talked about that a little while ago college courses usually emphasize on critical thinking uh adaptability and learning ability now this I absolutely love I didn’t even think about this until I pulled this
Chat GPT list up and it spoke to me right it said the process of obtaining a college degree often requires adapting to new environments and learning complex material traits that are beneficial in any professional setting I want somebody who knows how to learn right Alex arosi says it best he
Says the most important thing you could figure out is how to learn inherently we know how to learn we receive and we learn but to practice that skill and be able to take what you’ve learned and implement it into something then that that that is where the money is and so
If I hire somebody and they’re so buttthe headed that because they have all this field experience and they’re butt-headed and they can’t learn what I’m trying to show them that works in our company because they came to work for me I must have some sort of pro process that has created
Success I’d rather work with somebody who is learning capable who has the ability to absorb the information learn it and then even take that do some critical thinking around it and come back with suggestions on maybe how to make it more powerful make it better make it make it something that no one
Else has ever seen before right um work ethic and commitment we’ve talked about that if you can commit to four-year degree or you can commit to four years in the military without that up I love you like I think you’re amazing right uh communication skills so college education tends to place a strong
Emphasis on both written and verbal communication skills we talked about that already uh networking opportunities so this is a good one right I didn’t have this particular Advantage because I went to University online I was active duty Marine Corps and I was moving around a lot and I was involved in the
Marine Corps and I had a part-time job so I went to school online my stuff was online my relationship was with my professors and my Dean right I didn’t have a really decent relationship with the rest of the students there was no collaboration with the rest of the
Students however if you go to a university you will make friends that will be lifelong friends forever I got that St from the Marine Corps I went to the Marine Corps for nine years and I have friends that I could not speak to for five years see them in their faces
And we would like hang out and talk and just connect like we have seen each other yesterday right and so those networking opportunities are people in your industry that studied with you that might work at other companies that can create certain levels of collaboration between each other especially if you are
Part of a fraternity or sorority and you’ve got that Brotherhood Sisterhood mentality going on with the people that were part of your group that’s a huge opportunity in the networking side of things and I’m looking for that right I want people who know how to network with
Other people and have friends in the right places to work with me at my companies right um Global and cultural awareness understood uh credential and credibility so having a college degree often serves as a Baseline credal credential Baseline credential this doesn’t mean that they’re badass it is the Baseline credential right for certain
Professional roles and it can enhance an individual’s credibility in the field right now this is how chat GPT finishes it says it is important to note that while these reasons are common they are not Universal some employers May prioritize experience skills and other attributes over formal education I
Understand that I have nothing against that so for all you like you know clanky that are going to comment in my section and go no but skill matters more I didn’t say it doesn’t okay let’s just be clear all I said was if you had some
Skill and a degree it would show me something more than skill alone fair enough can we agree on that right it says additionally certain industries and roles may not require college degree understood right and some high school graduates succeed exceptionally when their careers through experience vocational training apprenticeships and self-taught skills
So all day long right but it also showed like vocational training and things of that nature so I’m also not saying college degree I’m saying Advanced education right if you are a Plummer and you own a plumbing company chances are you did not have to go to some Advanced
Training you maybe went to a vocational school that tal that taught you Plumbing um there’s some still some it schools that are vocational schools things of that nature and I think that those are phenomenal for what they are and and where they are and for what they do
Right and so you know there are other folks like roofers there look let’s face Realtors you don’t have to have a degree right you don’t have to have a degree to be a real estate agent but I will tell you this every time I talk to somebody else who’s in business and they
Understand that I am an MBA graduate we have a very different conversation because to them they’re I’m not the 18-year-old who just went and got my license and maybe I did well maybe I didn’t so forth so on right I’m not just not not somebody that’s just
Good on social media to them I’m somebody that has a higher level of education and they feel like they can change the conversation where they are in their world and that has helped me in my business so what I’m trying to say is this no you do not need a degree to to
Be successful in life you don’t but if you do get one the chances of you having employment and opportunities they go up and the chances of you having a better understanding of your industry they go up and so I say this to you if you’re thinking about going to school and it’s
Kind of up in the fence and you’re wondering if you really need it please go and if you’re talking to your kids and you’re educating them at high level in entrepreneurship I applaud you but let them go get a four-year degree along with that there’s no reason
Why you wouldn’t be able to do both there’s no reason why you can’t have a degree and still be an entrepreneur I don’t understand the fallacy here the thought process here so please some of you think these universities are a scam so be it they’re too expensive I agree man
They’re way too expensive you don’t want to pay for school go to the military for four years they’ll pay it for you how about that right like do some get a grant get a scholarship do really well but my kids they’re encouraged to go to school whether they take over my
Business one day or not they’re encouraged to go to school and maybe they have zero interest in my business in the future and they do something on their own and they’re massively successful on it but they do it with a four-year degree or six-year degree or 10year degree behind them because two of
My kids want to be doctors the other one wants to be a lawyer go figure my fourth daughter no degree and she’s doing her own thing it is what it is she’s happy I’m happy but if she ever called me one day and said I’d like to get further education I
