He’s a popular fraternity brother with a big heart highly talented a natural leader he’s very dedicated when he wanted to do something he did it a lapse in judgment trips him up but he soon gets himself back on track he seemed like he was doing really well in school
He was keeping up with school work one day he heads to campus and never returns it’s as if when that bus pulled away he vanished a cryptic note is his only explanation said my family’s given me a lot of opportunities that I just didn’t take advantage of his puzzling Secrets
Leave detectives and his loved ones baffled we think there’s somebody out there that can help us figure out what’s going on I don’t care why he left where he’s been I just want him to come home Tuesday night April 19 2016 19-year-old College sophomore James Martin Roberts who goes by Martin meets
With friends at a favorite appalachin State University hangout the Klondike Cafe it was a pretty busy night um pretty usual for kondik I mean fact that you can still walk around but it’s pretty hard you’re probably going to get your feet sted on or something Martin and his fraternity
Brother have come for the kondik big draw my group of friends we wanted to go to play trivia and so I texted Martin I was wondering if he was going to be there according to Martin’s friend Holly he’s true to form that night he would always just say funny things and just he
Would always be the guy that everybody wanted to hang out with I was just so mesmerized by Martin always like had such a huge crush on him that I didn’t even realize anything else was going on the son of parents who are divorced and estranged from each other Martin first enrolled at
Appalachin State University in Boon North Carolina almost a year and a half earlier he was really set on going to appalachin State and when that that acceptance came in he was really excited about it nestled in the foothills of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains the school’s Vibe is unique the laidback atmosphere
Think it s some really well just it’s nice and calm there during Martin’s very first semester he been invited to pledge of fraternity on campus to camp at Epsilon known as te for short he knew people there already and they were invited to the Frat parties and immediately he was
Selected I know that he’s someone who thrives when he’s around his friends he wanted an opportunity to make friends quickly and that was the best way to do it I think he liked the Brotherhood he’ always played Sports and had his team and the fraternity was kind of the same
Thing even as a child in Kernersville North Carolina Martin was a natural athlete playing soccer playing baseball playing football he just he always loved Sports as the brown haired blue-eyed Dynamo got older he excelled on the soccer field he liked to compete he liked to play he liked to play to
Win Martin was pure hustle pure work and he did it calmly and quietly all the time he could walk off the field and be relaxed comfortable fun loving respectful kind caring he’s got a big heart people would look up to him and it made him feel really good about himself
In high school he was voted captain of his soccer team yet by the time he graduated he was ready for a change Martin was very very focused on something that interested him business finance things of that nature were something that he had said all along he thought he had an interest in
Academically Martin set his sights on app States business school he was smart he was very dedicated when he wanted to do something he did it Wednesday night April 20th the day after Martin was at the kondik cafe his father John Roberts who lives two hours away has been expecting a call from
Martin we were making plans for the you know coming weeks and for the summer and for next semester we were talking about the classes he was in and the grades that he had at that time two days earlier Martin told his dad he’d soon have his first paycheck from his new
Dishwashing job at the Daniel Boon Inn talk to he was going to call me back Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest and talk about how much money he made but according to Martin’s friends and family his phone was his Achilles heel he was just a not a great like texting Communicator phone Communicator
I feel like multiple times he always had a broken phone he refused to put it in a case ever would not put it in a case so he had multiple shattered screens on his phone by the next day Martin’s father still hasn’t heard from his son he tries
Reaching him yet again with no luck he seemed a little bit strange since he was so definite that he was going to call me back that same morning Martin is actually at his apartment getting ready to start his day he chats with his roommates over breakfast they all said that they saw
Him in passing on Thursday Martin tells them he’s heading to the library he took a water bottle and he put it in his backback and he he left probably about 10:30 that morning around lunchtime Martin’s cousin who also attends AB State runs into him on campus it was a complete chance meeting
She had uh forgotten something for her class the two have barely seen each other this semester they walked together to the nearby Apple CART bus stop the free bus service students and Boon residents used to get around town they had a conversation for 10 or 15 minutes and upbeat Martin tells her
About his plans for next semester and that he’s on his way to his fraternity house now when the bus comes she gets on and the cousins go their separate ways he started walking down the street and she didn’t think anything of it this brief casual meeting will soon take on far
Greater significance than his cousin ever imagined it really was some kind of coincidence if you believe in that kind of thing that they happened to meet up at that time at that place and it would be the last time that we’ve seen or heard from him at 4:00 that afternoon two of
Martin’s close friends and frat brothers stopped by his apartment to see him Martin hey Martin man you okay the day before he’d abruptly dropped out of their fraternity chat group he was the Freshman pledge class leader of that group those people reached out to Martin
Want to know why but Martin is not in his room and he’s no longer responding to the texts from his friends by Friday morning Martin’s father is increasingly worried about his son it’s been 4 days of radio silence they uh called the landlord for the apartment complex I said are you
Going to go by there anytime today this morning I need to check on bar the apartment manager started calling the roommates and saying hey can you go in his room see if he’s there here see if you can figure out what’s going on Martin’s roommate knocks on his closed
Door Martin and they didn’t know if he was in the room or gone Martin’s not inside but on his desk there’s a note reading it his roommate immediately realizes something is very wrong Friday morning April 22nd 2016 a roommate of college sophomore Martin Roberts has made an alarming Discovery in his
Room the roommate called me read me the note over the telephone I knew I had to get up there ASAP just dropped everything at work got home as quick as I could got my wife Abby and we headed to Boon as fast as we could get there the roommate’s second call is to
The Boon police department they contacted the police and said we need to report this young man missing when detective Kevin Wilson arrives at the apartment he reads Martin’s letter the note is so personal Martin’s parents have made only parts of it public it was the note that Martin left stating that
He was leaving I think it’s to the folks in I se and he said my family’s given me a lot of opportunities that I just didn’t take advantage of he was disappointed in himself I think he felt like a failure it’s really sad but it didn’t really say where he
Was going or what he was doing it doesn’t say this is a suicide note and I’m going to hurt myself nor does it say this is not a suicide note and I’m going to go away so when I saw it I thought this is not going to be
Good this going to be a difficult case Martin has also left important possessions behind his laptop his iPad his phone and his wallet I think you could be seen as the ultimate withdrawal Boon police reach Martin’s half sister Nikki and explain that they’re having difficulty locating
Martin I immediately got in phun with my mom and we let her know what was going on I left work went and got her and we went to Moon all the way up there I kept thinking he’s went off with a couple of his friends and forgot to tell somebody he’s to turn
Up according to Martin’s father and stepmother the 19-year-old had expressed disappointment in himself before 8 months earlier after a great freshman year Martin had just returned to Appalachian State as a sophomore his very first night back he ran into trouble he went up for the sole purpose of attending this fraternity party
He was a social drinker so I don’t think he was addicted to alcohol in any sort of way he drank with his friends who unfortunately drank a lot he made the decision to drive after he had had you know apparently too much to drink then 18 Martin pulled right out
In front of App State campus police they stopped him and then that evolved into a driving while imp pared citation Martin was taken into custody that night I get a call from him I think it’s like 2: a.m. 3:00 a.m. maybe and he tells me I need to come
Pick him up because he’s in jail and he got a DWI Martin’s girlfriend Kayan lived almost a 100 miles away from Ab State I don’t know why he didn’t pick sobody closer I think that calling his parents was definitely out of the question at that point he was nervous and scared and
Didn’t want to disappoint then Kayla says she drove two hours to Boon that night to help Martin when I arrived he was already out as soon as I got there he threw money at me as in like gas money he’s like I’m sorry you came all the way up
Here for nothing exhausted and emotional Kayla says they wound up fighting I was like I can’t do this I deserve a little bit better um someone who doesn’t disc considerer himself in decisions that he makes Caleb that night Martin lost his driver’s license and his girlfriend 24 hours passed before Martin
Got up the courage to call his father and stepmother that’s when he told us he had got a DUI and said he needed to come home that the situation he was in was not good for him and he needed some time away from that same day they brought him back
Home to Kernersville North Carolina we first thought maybe he was just going to come home for the weekend uh or maybe even a week but it wasn’t until he was home a day or two that he began to say I think I want to take a
Semester off I’d like to get away from the fraternity life Martin withdrew from Abate while home a friend of his family heard he was looking for work and I said well I’m be open up my uh store that semester so he’s going to be one of my first
Hunters according to Rich Miller Martin thrived at his new job in the restaurant much like he had playing soccer he’s a rare kid you see a kid that young that mature uh be able to handle business the consistency that he showed on the field is exactly what he showed when he sawed
Work for me Martin even put his business education to work to boost the restaurant’s bottom line the job helped repair his bruised self-esteem Martin did you know exaggerate some but he said that rich wanted to Grim him for management after Martin took a full semester off he returned to college in
January of 2016 he was ready to get not to be living with us again but according to his father Martin wanted to handle his education differently this time he was not living on campus in a dorm like he did his first year he was living in an apartment with three other fraternity
Brothers he seemed like he was doing well in school he was keeping up with school work I think he was glad to be back with his friends but we didn’t talk as much after he went back now just four months later Martin’s family and friends have been blindsided by his sudden
Disappearance during the 2-hour drive to Boon his father calls Martin’s cousin who’s on the appstate campus she was the one that said we ran into each other yesterday as a matter of fact at Martin’s father’s request she rushes to Martin’s apartment while talking with his roommates inconsistencies
Emerge they thought Martin was headed to the library Thursday morning which isn’t where his cousin ran into him Martin told her he was headed to the house where his teak fraternity Brothers hang out if he were to go to the te house he would have made a right Andross the
Street and the te house would be right up here but police find find no evidence Martin arrived there were people that were at the house that day around that time and they said he didn’t come by today we didn’t see him at all trying to determine where Martin went detective Wilson contacts the
City’s apple cart bus service there is video on the apple cart transit buses maybe the footage holds a crucial clue to where Martin really went we poured over video that night we were actually able after several to find him on video walking away from the bus stop April 23rd
2016 college student Martin Roberts was reported missing 15 hours earlier by his roommates his cousin was the last person to see him as they parted at a campus bus stop now police have just spotted him on video taken by bus security cameras it’s kind of grainy but it’s clear enough to
Tell that it’s Mark the front camera clearly shows him starting to walk away the side camera you can see him through the glass and then the back camera catches him as he’s walking away Martin’s on foot and heading toward a busy intersection he’s right on the edge of
Campus so the detective is hoping the video will reveal which direction he takes he’s on that video that last rank for approximately 17 seconds and he’s right at a street corner he looks One Direction and looks the other direction and then they don’t see him anymore it’s
As if when that bus pulled away he vanished hoping for leads on which way Martin had it boom police tried to access his phone but without his passcode it’s sealed tight as a drum but the unique thing to Apple products is if you haven’t opened your emails or phone calls or text
Messages they’ll actually are visible on that phone there a lot of M text and Miss phone calls investigators follow up on every missed call and text as a result the news quickly spreads that Martin can’t be found it was just like the worst feeling you could ever have your heart just
Drops police begin scrutinizing Martin’s interactions before he went missing Thursday trying to understand his frame of mind a fraternity brother tells police that 48 hours before Martin disappeared he driven him to get a hair cut they actually took him to the bank because he had to go to the bank to withdraw cash
Money when Martin returned according to his roommates he’d also bought groceries he had a small refrigerator in his bedroom and when we were there the refrigerator was basically empty investigators wonder if Martin could have taken the food with him when he left Martin’s high school girlfriend Kayla
Tells police that in her case she’d grown concerned about Martin three days earlier when he withdrew from a high school chat group she sent him a text saying what are you doing do you not want to talk to me anymore in particular she didn’t know that that very night
Martin also withdrew from his fraternity chat group and then he he started saying things that made me question if he was okay it was things like no one can help me at this point there’s nobody I can talk to the next day Martin went missing it’s unbelievably alarming but uh you know we
Don’t know we don’t know what’s going to happen until until it happens then B police are told about a possible sighting of Martin just an hour and a half after he left his cousin a bus stop we had a young lady come forward who stated that she had seen him walking
In an area not too far from town she knew who Martin was I think she described the like an unusual or a particular gate that she hey I know that’s Martin Roberts the exact location flry Fork Road between winklers Creek and paint Branch roads from there it’s possible Martin
May have been headed to a nearby Recreation Area called Trout Lake it is a well visited area by college students it’s easy to get to and there’s water there there’s walking trails you can hike in the mountains there police learn that Martin has been to Trout Lake
Before perhaps he packed some food for a hike and something happened to him here in the densely forested foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains the day after Martin was reported missing North Carolina State Highway Patrol provides a specially equipped helicopter to conduct a nighttime search for Martin in the area of the sighting
They have what’s called a Ford looking infrared radar if you’re walking in an area or if there’s an animal in the area they give off a lot more heat than the surrounding ground if Martin’s somewhere in the woods the sensors would see him PL as day but the infrared surge yields
Nothing as investigators pie together details about Martin from his friends and family a pattern begins to emerge they discover he’d been selectively revealing or hiding details about himself for months before he went missing after coming back to college his friends started to notice that there were times where Martin would come in
And and uh hey where have you been sometimes would say I was with my cousin well but we talked to his cousin he only has one cousin in Boon and she says I haven’t seen him we don’t hang out together Martin also hid something much bigger from his roommates and his mother
And sister that he wasn’t even attending appalachin State this semester we thought he was back enrolled in appach he was now enrolled in our local Community College we wanted to take classes online I think it was four or five classes at the community college when investigators get Martin’s academic records from the community
College there’s another Revelation he was doing fine he wasn’t failing anything but he just decided to stop going it had been nearly a month since Martin had logged on to any online courses he was you know telling me about his grades and his classes and extra
Credit and things like that and he had quit going that’s not all Martin had been hiding we called the places that he was telling his family members he worked at and they said we we have applications um I was actually able to find applications to all the places he’s talking about but
He never got hired at the time I thought and he is he’s working himself not to death you know now I know different but you wish I have known n but we didn’t know he was being mysterious or untruthful or hiding something from from just about everybody Martin’s mother and sister
Said he even liked to them about his DWI he told them he’d been ticketed while walking home he said that he was stopped by the police and for drunken disorderly I said well you know um you learn your lesson Le you weren’t driving but Martin was behind the wheel that
Night I was shocked I always thought we had the relationship that he could just talk to me about anything it just seems like he was trying his best to give out this picture to people that everything’s okay okay I’m doing fine uh when in actuality I wasn’t doing fine at
All 19-year-old Martin Roberts has been missing from Boon North Carolina for 5 days in that time police have uncovered a trail of puzzling behavior that Martin left behind him disengaging from his networks and his friends and being so deceptive about things was very unusual it was not how he was everything that
Happened was pointing to his he was actually miserable and it wasn’t work tired it wasn’t School tired burnt out whatever he was just miserable or depressed or something Martin’s cryptic note now makes more sense to investigators they think he’d been telling people what he imagined they
Wanted to hear about him it seems to me that Martin was very much trying to keep up the facade that everything was going great for him in his note he alluded to being tired of that tired of his life not living up to expectations but police have no idea what Martin’s
Intentions were they look for clues in his possessions starting with his wallet as a result of his DWI Martin no longer had a valid driver’s license they take your driver’s license away from you physically his father says Martin did get a state issued ID card it’s now gone
His original ID was not in that room we assume it somewhere else or or on his person Martin didn’t take his bank card with him his parents had said you know he’s going to have a certain debit card and this is this is what banking through when police checked Martin’s banking
History there were no large withdrawals or suspicious purchases before he went missing there’s been no more activity it still hasn’t been any at all this time Boon police also find something unexpected Martin Left Behind Some anti-depressant pills that Martin was not prescribed there there were quite a few of them I
Don’t know of any time that he has been treated for depression it’s not something that we see being bought and sold between students here police are never able to determine how Martin got the anti-depressants or why he had them in the first place 5 days after he went missing two
More possible sightings of Martin are reported to police one near Trout Lake the other Wingers Creek Road bolstering the likelihood of the original sighting an hour and a half after he’ left the bus stop in that same general area uh around the same time frame and so
Uh for us that seemed to add credibility that they had seen Martin Roberts in that area still investigators check other modes of transportation Martin could have used to go in different directions the best we could tell he didn’t take a bus he didn’t take a cab he didn’t take
Uh you know one he’s a have based companies unless Martin hitched a ride this leads police back to square one the theory he was traveling on foot he definitely had the ability to hike and he was very active um had a lot of endurance and could do anything that he
Put his mind to but those who know Martin best question if he’d ever attempt anything more ambitious than a day hike he’s go outside and sweat for five minutes come inside and take a shower type person he just didn’t have a lot of experience proba hadn’t been camping five times in his
Life in the bus security video Martin certainly wasn’t dressed for a long journey I only had on with some cheap tennis shoes and a not even what I describe as a backpack even so investigators consider the possibility Martin might have wandered into the hundreds of miles of wilderness surrounding Boone perhaps attempting to
Connect to the nearby appalachin Trail we received a couple things said hey there was a kid out here definitely didn’t belong out here but it didn’t it wasn’t him somebody completely different Martin’s Family suggests another possible destination we’ve always been a beach family we’ve always gone at least once
If not two or three times a season to the beach a family favorite is o Isle Beach North Carolina 280 M from boom it’s just outside Myrtle Beach definitely a beach kind of person if so Martin’s two distinctive tattoos might stand out there on his left forearm he’s got an homage to
Appalachin State it’s kind of a a blended view of mountains which is definitely reflective of Boom on his right rib cage Martin has a tattoo of a lyric from Bob Marley’s song Zion train don’t gain the world and lose your soul wisdom is better than silver or
Gold over the next two months sightings of young men matching Martin’s description pop up along Coastal North and South Carolina but after investigation none turn out to be him a month into their investigation Boon police have followed numerous leads trying to locate Martin but there’s a fundamental mystery at the very heart of
His case we have these time periods where we don’t know where Martin was police find no answers in Martin’s digital footprint extracted from his laptop I would say I’ve went through 12,000 emails and actually read them and and tried to figure out what what’s he doing as an investigative Hail Mary
Boon’s chief of police appeals to the community for anything they may know about Martin when he was off the radar it’s almost an open letter to the public hey if you’ve got information about this good or bad or whatever here’s the chief’s office line you call me the appeal elicits no
Responses I’ve been doing this job 20 plus years and I’ve never had any case where you put a fraction of this amount of work into it and you get nothing back then after 4 months worth of dead ends detective Wilson receives an unexpected call from a coroner 350 M
Away in Indiana who’s investigating some unidentified human remains they had found from what I understood the lower portion of a leg with a foot but it was in a shoe not just any shoe a gray New Balance sneaker the same kind of sneaker Martin was wearing when he went
Missing so that coroner said that you guys are the first thing that popped up so I just called you with via reason he came here 19-year-old Martin Roberts has been missing for 4 months but a coroner in Indiana has just recovered human remains that potentially could be his Boon’s detective Wilson quickly
Discovers the sneaker found in Indiana is a size and a half larger than what Martin wears yet there’s only one definitive way to know if it’s Martin’s we had actually done parental DNA testing I had gone and met with his father and birth mother to do DNA
Samples the coiner said we’re going to send our stuff off and obviously if there’s a match you guys are going to get that neither one of them ended up being a match in June of 2016 Boon police investigate another potentially heartbreaking theory of what could have happened to Martin if
Martin’s decided to hurt himself we’re looking you know we’re looking for that with three reported sightings of Martin near Trout Lake immediately after he went missing police focus on that area and specifically in the water those bodies of water you know saw and com for folks to use those as a mean mechanism
To to commit suicide or to harm themselves extensive water searches are conducted of both trout lake and the nearby Boon Reservoir the North Carolina State Bure investigation they have a few dog teams of um hrd dogs human remains detection most folks know them as caber
Dogs the dogs are trained on the odor of human decomposition the gases are actually lighter than the water so they’re going to rise to the surface and so what we’re looking for when we’re doing the searches of the water is for the dogs to do exactly the same thing as they do on
The ground is to alert us when they smell those gases their searches also use sonar technology and divers to scan the bottoms of the lake and Reservoir afterward the dogs scour the land surrounding both bodies of water the searches yield nothing there nothing uh no change of
Behavior on the days that we searched for Martin in the water areas no animation nothing gave us any indication that there was anything there Moon police Circle back to try to understand Martin’s behavior and what he’d been silently struggling with before he went missing I did was search
War to the college because they have a Counseling Center that that offers free counseling to the students laws protecting patient confidentiality make mental health records difficult to access even for law enforcement did he have some type of um mental illness happening did he have an addiction was
He having problems with his sexuality or you know some type of identity issue or or or or whatever we never saw any signs or or never been any disc discussion or communication that he was having any issues with uh sexuality or gender identity and we’ve always told him if
You have any problem you can tell us about it in our interviews with his friends which are our greatest source of information nobody can give us any information about any of that being a problem but Martin’s friends tell police they had noticed a marked change in him
When he returned to school in January of 2016 he was less about always having fun and going and doing things with them there’d be times where he wanted to be alone I would have never known that he was struggling with anything he h at home police find no evidence Martin ever
Sought mental health counseling at Abate months pass and boom police explore a host of theories for other places Martin could have gone they also enlist outside help to scrutinize his case we brought in experts in the field hand them the case File and see in two
Days and just let them just go through it with fresh eyes and try to point out anything that we didn’t do well enough or didn’t do it all or anything that they can come up with Martin’s Family holds tight to the hope that investigators can find
Him they’re offering a reward for up to $10,000 for information on Martin we think there’s somebody out there that knows something that can help us figure out what’s going on Martin’s father and stepmother have set up a Facebook page called help find Martin Roberts to heighten the visibility of their cherished missing
Son there also to try to communicate directly with Martin how much we love him and we miss him and we want him back we just want to know you’re okay nearly two years have passed since the day Martin disappeared leaving behind troubling questions I had to have no clue what was
Impacting him I just feel so bad that I didn’t see it the one thing that we know for sure is we don’t know anything for sure but somebody does in August of 2017 Martin would have turned 21 for his family the pain of his absence is excruciating the plan had always been
That Martin was going to walk me down the aisle after I got engaged to asked him he said yeah the day that I went and picked out my wedding dress he said I can’t wait for the wedding sis but after Martin disappeared she had to decide if would proceed and he wasn’t
There we want to get him back home and be a part of the family again I don’t care why he left where he’s been I just want him to come home if you have any information about James Martin Roberts or his disappearance you can confidentially contact the Boon police department at 828 268
6900 or High Country Crim Stoppers at 828 268 6959 she was there and then she vanished I’m about to call police Charlie where are you I’m starting getting real this is serious I would to he and now a family is in crisis and the whole reason why
She left her homeate that was to help him we have questions for and an entire Community BS together to find this radiant young woman everybody’s looking everybody’s talking about it it’s in everybody’s face it’s not just Charlie who was missing we were racing against time it’s also her unborn
Baby I just kept thinking she’s out there in the brush fragman witness an extraordinary group of people coping with a harrowing situation what do you think this is weird detectives come into play a private investigator digs deeper to help make sense of the mystery it’s an active investigation it’s a hot case
Not a Cold Case join the fight for justice in this special edition of disappear Carly Joan Scott known as Charlie went missing on the island of Maui on February 9th 2014 this responsible young woman was reportedly last seen by her friend whose car had broken down on the side of the
Road her friends and family have been tirelessly searching ever since as much as I love Hawaii I’ve been really angry with the jungle lately because it’s been preventing myself and others from you know easily doing what we need to do which is search and find her we’re talking about 30 miles of
Cliffs and the most intense jungle on Earth well line as we know damn well she’s not leaving sister know damn well she’s not leaving her dogs she had a happy life here Searchers must prepare themselves for any unforeseen danger while out of the Jungle one for pig one
For man they constantly keep their eyes peeled for anything that will lead them to Charlie my brain hurts from trying to think of all the potential places trying to really piss me wear me out the same time I am going nuts the longer it goes on the more
Determined we are to find her we’re just not going to give up we’re just not going to give up the day Charlie went missing played out in painful slow motion for her mother kimberland Scott what led up to us realizing that she was missing was basically um she
Didn’t show up Monday morning um she usually brought me her laundry Charlie only lives a few miles away in a neighboring town so I had called that no answer which didn’t surprise me too much because she uh would have been at work by that time and uh when she’s at work she’s at
Work Charlie works as an administrator for a gallery and art center called the who we know we out I was here on Monday and she didn’t come in and um because it was very unusual she had worked on Sunday she was a really hard worker and
I mean she’s here when I come in here her trck is there and um and then on Monday when she didn’t come in we thought um you know maybe she was sick and we started texting and then it just was not good her empty desk has been a constant
Reminder that Charlie is missing she never showed I was one of those moments where I knew something really bad was happening because Charlie never doesn’t shown 27-year-old Charlie is one of Five Sisters living in Maui in a town close to her mother kimberland Scott and stepfather Johnny Pipkin according to family and friends
Charlie has always been adored by those who know her one of the kindest most generous people that I’ve ever come across in my life and through and through a good person in addition to her day job Charlie is within months of getting her license in cosmetology she was really carving a
Life out for herself so when Charlie announced to her family a few months earlier that she was pregnant with her ex-boyfriend’s child and thrilled with the prospect of motherhood her family embraced the idea she really overnight just blossom Charlie’s responsibilities shifted from always looking after those
Around her to caring for herself and her unborn baby she used to be part of the normal scene for her age group you know the Raves and having drinks with her friends and all that had changed she was really really committed to having this baby and raising it
Well as the day Charlie went missing progressed Kimberlin recalls texting her daughter repeatedly I said do you want to have an early dinner with me I was at 3:36 and then where the bleep are you so I was already getting kind of panicked by 9:00 Charlie’s mom and Charlie’s
16-year-old sister fedra go to Charlie’s house to see for themselves why they’ve had nothing but Silence from Charlie all day we broke into her house and Zoe was in there her dog there was no dog food no water for Zoe these are cardinal sins in Charlie’s eyes you
Never ever leave your pet without food and water kimberland notices that Charlie’s other Pitbull Nala who would have been with her that night is missing I believe that’s when I did the cell phone it’s Life 360 I have all the family members on it Life 360 is a cell phone app that
Serves as a tracking device for families and friends and it showed that the last GPS paying from her cell phone was at 10:56 on Sunday night at KI Peninsula K Andi is a remote part of the island 20 miles from Charlie’s home knowing Kai Peninsula and that it’s not
Necessarily a place that a young pregnant mother would go and and hang out or spend the night at I was really scared by then the only way to get to K Andi is by taking the Hana Highway an Infamous Coastal Road carved into the Cliffside known for its dangerous hairpin
Turns by day tourists flock to the road to experience the breathtaking views but by Night the darkness makes for a potentially perilous Journey that locals are often forced to navigate fedra and I going over a list of names of who she could possibly have gone to see and there’s only that one
Person that she would go and do something for her in the middle of the night and not tell anyone her ex-boyfriend Steven Kappa biano family members say that Charlie would do anything for Steven the father of her unborn child although the couple has been broken up for well over a year
They are still friends and sometimes more they were together but I know in the past they used to meet all the time in secluded places in the middle of the night and it was a secret like Charlie would tell me I’d never hear from Steven Charlie most St there was no one
Else there hasn’t been anyone else for a very long time after finding Zoe abandoned at Charlie’s home her family is eager to find St and ask him if he has seen Charlie but they can’t locate him 1019 I’m about to call police Charlie where are you having done all she can on
Her own kimberland calls the Maui police department to file a missing person report I absolutely knew there was something something very very wrong coming up retracing Charlie’s last known whereabouts uncovers a potential need he had asked her to come out and help him retrieve his car it’s February 10th
2014 and 27-year-old Charlie Scott is pregnant and has been missing for 24 hours an officer from the Maui police department has been dispatched to Charlie’s parents home at 10:45 p.m. so that kimberland Scott can file a missing person’s report for her daughter I told him she hadn’t shown up
To work that we knew of that we knew that she had gone to Kai Peninsula and was there at 10:56 at night which was completely out of the norm what is even more puzzling for Charlie’s family is that they were with her just 24 hours before calling the
Police Charlie had stopped by the family’s home in high coup around 600 p.m. for dinner and a visit with her sisters we all saw her at Brook’s house watching Disney cartoons and then Brook’s bed in her room all of the girls were all piled on the bed
Together when was here on Sund we were all trying to crowd on here but Charlie was kicked back like this and she was talking about how the baby was kicking right then I touched for a second but I don’t know it it had like a a funny effect on
Me she seemed really really really happy Charlie’s mother Kimberlin also recalls noting how her daughter was glowing that night I had walked to the gate and she was standing there her hand on her belly rubbing her belly she had just told us two weeks before that she had begun feeling the baby
Move that’s what sticks with me is that she’s very happy about this very excited to be a mom Charlie left right at about 8:00 that evening and she did not tell anyone that she was going anywhere else but home it was a totally perfect night I wish you could have stayed
Longer of course I wish a bunch of things about that night at first light Charlie’s family is off to search the Hana Highway and beyond for themselves one of the best scenarios I could think of is that she had rolled her car and just couldn’t get to her
Phone I just kept thinking wait she’s out there in the brush and she’s possibly injured pregnant and she needs us to find her the terrain is daun Charlie’s Family inspects every sharp turn and narrow passage to see if it is a possible crash site one of our hopes was maybe she just
Went off the road or she crashed down there but they didn’t see her didn’t have her car and we saw her you know all day Monday when we were looking we found nothing as the daylight starts to fade The Searchers returned to the family’s
Home in the town of ha coup I got really panicky that the sun was going down and she was going to be out there and I just didn’t know where she was later that evening Charlie’s Family learns new information about Charlie’s last known whereabouts her exy boyriend Steven is
Saying that Charlie went to his house around 8:30 p.m. the night she went missing he had asked her to come out and help him retrieve his car it was either stuck or broken down he told me that she had picked him up from his house and that she drove him
Out to go fix his truck I guess the battery was dead or something kimberland says that Steven told her it only took a matter of seconds for him to get his his car running again she never got out of her car then he basically started driving back and he says that her headlights
Were in his rearview mirror all the way to Ula which is a street that’s only about 10 15 minutes from here at that point around the area of Twin Falls Steven reportedly lost sight of Charlie in his rear viw mirror he knew nothing about her being missing until Tuesday
Morning when Charlie’s friends hear about her disappearance and the circumstances surrounding it fear and confusion are Unleashed it could be anybody you know she could have up a you know all these things run through your head and it just it really scares me while police plan an official search
For Charlie her family and friends continue their efforts by using social media to plead for the community’s help by Tuesday night we had been all over Facebook you know trying to see if anybody had seen her and I posted a picture of her movia cool I never been so afraid in all my
Life the only thing keeping me in my skin is how frightened she must be it’s so dark Nikki where is my daughter Charlie’s story makes the Evening News family members say they last Saw 27y old Scott two days ago at her sister’s home in CER Harley’s mom says she checked her daughter’s home
Yesterday in M but no one was there I will be’s missing that 28 to 48 hour perod and spreads everywhere pretty much that fast the internet instantly spreads the story of Charlie’s disappearance far beyond the tight-knit Island community former detective and private investigator Gary Mo begins following
Charlie’s case from 5,000 miles away in New Jersey you can see that there’s a lot going on a lot of emotion going on a lot of family and community support law enforcement everybody’s busy but they’re in Maui and you’re in New Jersey and you can’t wait to get there Gary specializes
At missing person cases and has made it his mission to help families get the assistance they need so to be to take what I’ve learned from missing person cases that I’ve worked and be able to plug that into someone today and be able to help that family it’s a great
Opportunity back in Mau the media attention seems to be working a credible lead comes in it’s the first bit of Hope Charlie’s family has received in 48 hours Nala Charlie’s dog who was with her when she went missing has been located and with any luck Charlie will be found close by
The dogs found somewhere here at the marketplace not a speck of dirt and mud and it’s always this area is always wet damp and muddy around here so it’s kind of odd that that dog just showed up um perfectly in he help Nala was found safe
25 miles from where Steven says he lost sight of Charlie’s Car in the opposite direction from her home that presents an enigma to all of us there’s no that Nala traversed from ulena road all the way back to niku Marketplace where she was found there’s just no
Way since all who know Charlie agree that she would never have left Nala alone there is only one logical conclusion for them about the dog to us it seems that somebody who knew her basically took her out there and dropped her off knowing that she’d be picked up or seen
There’s something else that continues to stump the family which is the location of Charlie’s last cell phone ping unless she turned off her phone voluntarily or the battery died they can’t understand why her cellone activity stopped in K miles before the location where the family says Steven told them his car broke
Down this isone re right here her phone would have pinged right up here and it shows that she didn’t go this point and now with Nala home safe the urgency to find Charlie intensified her family eagerly waits for Sunrise to get back out on the highway
We ar racing against time she’s lost or she’s injured or there’s a clue there’s something we’ll find that will lead us to her and it’s imperative that we do it quickly coming up as one clue after another emergence Charlie Scott’s disappearance becomes even more of a
Mystery we all had to stop and realize what the evidence was pointing to Charlie Scott has been missing on the Hawaiian island of Mai for three days her dog Nala who was with her the night she disappeared has turned up miles from home so far no other concrete Clues to
Indicate Charlie’s whereabouts have surfaced the community bands together to offer Charlie’s Family Assistance the fire department search and rescue joined in they also gave us really excellent Maps which helped IM and once that happened things got really organized later that day Robert Scott Charlie’s father arrives from the
Mainland to help search for his daughter finally joined up with Cam at the Haiku Community Center just began to try to absorb the scale and the things that were going on while the search continues between Hana and K and I the area where Charlie’s cell phone made its last ping
Others are targeting areas close to home where Steven Charlie’s ex-boyfriend has told Charlie’s family and friends he lost sight of her in his rear view mirror and the whole reason why she left her home late that night was to help him we have questions for it’s in this
Vicinity where a friend of the family makes a terrifying Discovery her car was torched the shell of Charlie’s SUV is found in an area called P far from where cell phone last pinged the location is Infamous as a surfing Mecca and a place where people are rumored to go to engage
In criminal Behavior every corner that you go around at P there’s a burned out vehicle or a strip car or you know trash that could be something Johnny Charlie’s stepfather goes to payi to see the car for himself he said that the inside of the car was torched the front grill was
Either melted or missing which he had made that grill for Charlie was the correct license plate that really was kind of a pivotal moment for all of us knowing that she didn’t have her car anymore at this point any scenario Charlie’s family imagines is chilling maybe somebody’s got a
Different agenda she’s just stuck away in somebody’s you know Tool Shed in the back who knows dozens of volunteers join forces with police as the search intensifies we take an ribbon and tie it to where we begin and if we find anything that looks supicious put two orange markers on their
Spot Charlie’s friend Lydia gain is doing her part by bringing out her horses to sweep hard to reach areas we’re trying to stay in group so if there’s a situation where we’re without cell phone have people stay with her and then someone else can go and call for
Help Lydia and her husband Adam are particularly close to Charlie she would always ride a horse named magic that’s her favorite he’s a little white Arab that looks close enough to a unicorn that that worked for her that was Charlie or is Charlie’s favorite animal he’s a unicorn finding
Charlie safe on a greater meaning for Adam and Lydia they’ve been planning on helping Charlie raise the baby the father of her child was not very uh shall we say active in being a father my wife and I don’t have children and aren’t planning on having children
Of our own Charlie planned on living with Adam and Lydia once the baby was born I was with her at her first doctor when we heard her baby’s heartbeat for the first time together I was her Charlie’s abrupt disappearance baffles Adam she was at a good place in her life
And there wasn’t anything that she was running from or anyone that she was running from she was probably the happiest that I’ve seen her in the seven years that I’ve known meanwhile Charlie’s youngest sister 16-year-old fedra can’t shake the feeling that she needs to go to the area
Where Charlie’s cell phone last ped she keeps having I just need to get here I just need to get here and so she’s been a I just wanted to search it myself I didn’t I didn’t want to have someone else say yeah wear fed’s instincts are right she uncovers crucial
Evidence the clothing she was wearing that night her shoes all of it was found out there the next day police cordon off the area and do an official search Charlie’s Family says that more of Charlie’s belongings that would have been in her car are recovered by the
Police so they came they actually dug down I think they found the blanket 10 or 20 ft in and then the rest of her stuff were all found down by the river the implications are terrifying for Charlie’s family I know she isn’t wandering around naked that was also a moment where we
All had to stop and and realize and ingest and digest what was happening what the evidence was pointing to but until all the evidence found at the scene can be positively identified and processed for DNA Charlie’s case is still being handled as a missing person investigation soon the days turn into
Weeks yet Charlie’s Family remains persistent in their search former New Jersey detective Gary moo has been closely monitoring Charlie’s case the most important thing to remember at this point is this is a missing person case it’s not a homicide it’s not anything more although family and police have recovered substantial evidence until
Authorities process these items they cannot confirm Foul Play it seemed like especially in the first few days we were finding a lot of stuff you know vehicle turned up her clothing turned up and seemed like you know maybe we were getting close being able to find her um but I don’t
Know it seems less and less likely and there are still crucial personal effects of Charlie’s that were with her the night she went missing that have yet to be found I mean her computer’s gone Her wallet’s gone no one’s touched her bank account her phone is gone her car is destroyed there’s
Obviously some kind of Foul Play coming up is where her car was on the private investigator Gary travels to Maui to take a closer look at Charli’s case some of these parts from the car to learn more about Charlie Scott’s case go to investigationdiscovery.com disappeared three weeks have passed
Since Charlie Scott has gone missing while the daily organized searches with scores of volunteers have dwindled Charlie’s Family close friends and investigators are still going strong in the search for the 27-year-old expecting mother on the island of Maui it’s been 22 days today she’s been listening three weeks and one day
Definitely just what we’ve covered already it doesn’t surf so far Maui search and rescue teams have combed over 100 miles of rugged Terra we up this is like Maui s of Grand Canyon fre top that is still potential the longer it goes on the more determined we are to find her we’re just
Not going to give up Gary Mo travels to Maui to see if he can give Charlie’s Family any new insight into her case his experience and law enforcement and missing persons investigations makes him a valuable asset to Charlie’s Family I’m getting a look at the terrain heavy thick
Mountainous surrounded by water lots of cliffs it’s a breathtaking site if you’re a tourist and I would think a nightmare if you’ve got to conduct this search Gary hopes to get a firstand look at the key location in Char’s case he begins by accp Char’s stepfather to where Char’s car was
Torched days after Charlie’s disappearance her SUV turned up here it’s unclear whether the stripping and burning of Charlie’s car has something to do with her disappearance or is an unrelated crime perpetrated by someone who found her vehicle abandoned this is where her car was on the side Charlie’s Car was taken from here
By the Maui police department and currently sits in an impound lot as evidence Johnny recalls first coming here and processing the fact that the burned out car was his stepdaughter’s back of vehicle here so this is the front and it was on his side and I seen
The hatchback open I was like a oh God she had a freaking hatchback it’s a moment that lives on as a family nightmare but for Gary from an investigative point of seeing the remnants of the burned out Hull so far from where the other Clues have surfaced only heightens the mystery having three
Separate scenes associated with this missing person and no sign of the person themselves the ex-boyfriend saw her in his rearview mirror and then didn’t see her anymore a dog found several miles in the opposite direction her clothing was found off the beaten path and then the vehicle itself showing up days later in
A fourth location even further away it just doesn’t make sense the next day Gary drives out to the family home to meet with Charlie’s mother Kimberlin Kim yes I’m Kim so nice to meet you Al so show me around show me what you have you have Maps do you have yeah we
Do have Maps we have books we have all right Charlie’s mother shows Gary detailed logs of everything they’ve been doing in the last three weeks to try to find Charlie these are some of the areas that we’ve covered when I first met the family you could feel feel the pain you can feel
The struggle you can feel the raw emotion what I need to do is is not be emotional is to to stand back and away from it and look at it and see what they’ve done and what I can do to help are your Searchers trained or or are they being taught what
To look for basically we talk about how to handle any possible evidence that you’re not disturb on it don’t pick it up don’t touch it whatever is found here in searches that needs to be turned over to law enfor so they can all proceed together the the last thinger want is
For anything to be compromised exactly of course we want answers but we can be patient too yeah that’s that’s the key word you know wait convinced Charlie’s family is doing what needs to be done in the field click on missing persons Gary directs kimberland and Brooke to a website that
He says is crucial for families of the missing to be aware of those are the missing females in Hawai see the dates see their names it’s a National Database called namus which links unidentified bodies to missing persons through matching DNA dental records and fingerprints they’ll need a case report
Number and then we’ll set this up and set it up although Charlie’s family is grateful to Gary for showing them this resource entering Charlie’s data into namus forces them to face the fact that Charlie is likely deceased and the question that keeps everyone who knows Charlie a night is
Who could have possibly wanted to harm her Charlie didn’t make enemies Charlie made friends you know she was heart and soul this isn’t something random whatever’s going on here it’s going on because of somebody that she trusted while the Maui police department has yet to name a suspect relating to
Charlie’s disappearance they are naming a person of interest and can you identify who those Persons of Interest are right now uh one of the one the Persons of Interest is ex-boyfriend police say that Steven K biango Charlie’s ex-boyfriend has cooperated with the investigation and that he did agree to a polygraph test is
It true that he passed or failed the polygraph I’m going into specific details of what was said or what uh happened during the interview according to a report filed by Hawaii news now Steven himself commented on the result during a phone interview the police told
Me I failed he said they didn’t make me take it again I’m honestly not convinced I failed I think they might have just said that as a tactic but I really don’t know I’m walking around right now without handcuffs on everlie went missing many of her friends and family
Have been puzzled by Steven’s behavior and question his version of events there’s things that we know are wrong about what he said he just seems scared but he doesn’t seem very upset that’s weird and there’s one more thing about Steven that Charlie’s family and friends can’t seem to shake okay he wasn’t happy
About the pregnancy and that weighs pretty heavily on all of us he was not happy about it and um that was something that pretty much everyone knew according to Hawaii news now Steven told a reporter that the idea of becom a dad was growing on him what do you think what does that
Mean to you these are the kind of questions that we have of you what does that mean pure speculation well we’re all speculating this is where your detectives come into play because of his experience as a detective Gary recognizes that there is likely much more going on behind the scenes than the
Authorities are able to share with Charlie’s Family it’s a process it takes time they’re not going to want to pull the trigger too quick they want to make sure they have the ducks in a row it’s an active investigation it’s a hot investigation it’s a hot case not a cold
Case where are you headed we’re going I go meet with the detectives and then roll out to a hot spot this can break today tomorrow or the next day it’s time for Gary to head back home but he will continue to follow Charlie’s case and lend a family advice
We respect the investigation we respect the family we don’t want to interfere with that in any way we want to make sure this moves along coming up the search for Charlie takes a dramatic turn after police announce a disturbing development they don’t even make a word
For what I am right now it’s harder it’s really hard all right I’ll be by a bit Charlie Scott’s family and friends continue to search the island of Maui for any clues to explain The Disappearance of the 27-year-old pregnant woman Charlie’s friends have organized an event to increase awareness about
Violence towards women and raise funds to keep the searches going but we need to find out what happened we need to find Charlie we need Justice we need closure that’s what we want the fundraiser is also a way for those searching for char take a break from The Nightmare they’ve been
With Brook’s life has taken a dramatic turn since the day Charlie went missing she quit her job and is a central force behind the searches for her sister and like Charlie Brooke is also pregnant with her first child we knew we wanted to raise the babies together that was
Going to be really I mean really exciting but Brooke and Charlie’s dream that was so close to becoming a reality seems to be crumbling with each passing day the truth is it’s so deeply connected to what me and Charlie wanted to do with our whole lives that it’s hard it’s really
Hard three and a half weeks after Charlie vanished her family is informed of a major development in the case which changes everything Mar police wanted to inform us that they had conclusive evidence that there was a homicide that there that Charlie was dead police won’t elaborate further and
Have not made any arrests though Steven Capo biano Still Remains the only person of interest it’s just went from missing persons to a homicide all I know is that they confirmed that she is Bast and it was her and just like that the glimmer of hope kimberland and her family clung to
Is gone they don’t even make a word for what I am right now you can be an orphan you can be a widow or a widower but uh they don’t have a word for parents that lose their children say it’s a different room inside a Purgatory who knew that
Purgatory wasn’t just one big room of crap walked out of one space into another empty space since Charlie’s case has been re classified as a homicide the search for her has a new Direction so we just want to try and cover that area again maybe
Get the dog see if the dog hits on something it’s imperative they find her remains which could lead police to her killer identifying a body or a body part it brings conclusion for a family there’s no feeling good in it for the detective the missing person detective
Who solves the case if the person’s deceased he bring closure to the family but there’s no happiness we do not have so we’re still looking and trying to collect as much evidence out there as we can help the police we can Charlie’s loved ones decide it is
Now time to plan a memorial service to honor Charlie and her unborn child a boy she was going to name Joshua Aiden Charlie’s Memorial is held at Maui’s Baldwin Beach on a very windy Sunday in March this is one of Charlie’s favorite places in the world her family and friends gathered to
Celebrate her life and the life of Joshua 8 which was only about to begin two papier-mâché unicorns and a canoe all handmade for this event are adorned with handwritten notes and Hawaiian lays Charlie’s loved unicorns she always loved unicorns they’re like mythical creatures you know like just like
Charlie this is something would really made my daughter very happy I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my mother’s for all of you being here I’d like to say thank you to my community for in a way saving me from myself I can
See how it would be really really easy to just hate you walk around wondering who am I sharing the same air with the person who did something to my child in the course of Just One Day the lives of all who knew and loved Charlie Scott were changed forever the Ripple effects are
Unimaginable extending far beyond the island of La I don’t want her to fade into the pages of history is just another face you know we are Charlie you know all of us every mother every grandmother every sister and her baby is us too they’re a part of our family
Collectively and don’t to see them forgotten
