Bring out the best game of cricket which everyone can cherish and enjoy I also sincerely thank the heads of the respective media organizations and their members for being present for this important event covering cricket news of the two leading Catholic schools in Sri Lanka with the spirit of the game
I extend my thanks to the media fraternity for providing coverage of our school Cricket throughout the years as well as promoting the game of cricket indeed I appreciate and admire the yman Professional Service rendered by the media Professionals of our country for further further popularizing the game of Cricket in Sri

Saints is much awaited event in the College calendar due to the quality of cricket and spirit in which the game is played and its Rich Traditions incidentally St Joseph’s College kalambu the premier Catholic School in Sri Lanka has produce 12 National cricketers and two national Cricket captains for our Sri Lankan
Cricket team thus maintaining the high standard of sports throughout the years Jed Cricket encounter is going to be very interesting as the players are highly competent and have undergone rigorous training it is not going to be an easy competition but a really tough one as every player is excellent and unique in
His capacity no one is less than anyone needless to say sports Mak as healthy and strong and not only teach us to celebrate Victory but also accept defeat with Grace such lessons at a large stage lay a firm foundation for success in life the standard of cricket match of
The cricket match organized by us is increasing year after year and we are glad that we are providing the opportunity to many buding players to Horn their skills so that they can one day showcase their talent nationally and internationally I sincerely hope that we can continue to contribute to this match

Encounter the oldest 50 over encounter if I’m to put it another way and we take a lot of pride in being known for that um and whilst we celebrate the 50 years uh we have the two captains from the very first 50 over encounter and I’m going to draw
Your attention on to them and I’m and I’m going to invite U Mr Bernard Vijay Tunga and Mr Duan soza um soza uh up in front please uh Mr Bernard vij Tunga was the first captain of St Peter’s College at the very first limited over encounter alongside Mr Duan sza who was his
Counterpart at St Joseph’s captaining the josephian sides at Road a big round of applause ladies and gentlemen our captains from The 1975 um Cricket encounter firstly it’s a it’s a pleasure to see you both gentlemen and thank you very much for joining us uh despite your busy schedules and I’m sure you have
Some interesting thoughts and fun memories coming back into to a press conference and proud moments as Captain seeing this encounter with the 50th encounter growing 50 years from where you started it my first question to you Mr sza um would be how was it like playing the very first 50 over encounter
And and did you ever think this was the beginning of a rich tradition and uh the Joe pit could evolve into what it is right now well in those days the early days of cricket uh limited over Cricket it was just a blur I mean they said 50
Over Cricket so went and played this game and uh if I recall what happened in that game uh the very first ball of the tournament we lost our opening batsman so I think it must be some kind of record that the very first ball of the first ever 50 over tournament that we
Lost a wig and um when our opening Batman came back to the dressing room um so his father Mr V sing Ron V sing was a batsman his father Leo VI Singh was selling tickets at the gate in those days parents had to sell tickets and do
The whole lot unlike you know nowadays where you Outsource all these things so he was selling the tickets and when he saw his son going into bat he was settling the accounts with the other guy who was at the table and he said that
You know hang on to this I want to go and see my son back and before he could as soon as he walked into the ground he was in the gate his son was walking back so he never saw the first ball of the tournament
And uh I was in the dressing room pading up because I was batting number four so I was just padding up and uh I didn’t see the first ball either all I heard was a big noise and next moment my master in charge Angelo R came in and I
Asked him sir what happened he said I don’t know what happened you know and V sing walks into the dressing room so I asked Rohan you know what the hell happened he said I don’t know Skipper I didn’t see the ball so the first ball is
Is a memorable in in this jit 5 encounter where none of us saw the ball his father didn’t see the ball the master in charge didn’t see the ball opening Batman didn’t see the ball and the captain didn’t see the ball so I put it down to the Fuji craft that the Peter
I Skipper was very famous for and from that moment onward it was all downhill for us so in terms of my own personal memories I think as father Rector said we took that defeat with much grace and we went back to the Blackboard and S to each other we’ll
Never lose a single game after that and so be it that we ended up school boy Champions that year the following year and the following year so three years running we were school boy champions in limited over Cricket unbeaten and we ended up playing combined schools which
I think is a rare event for a school to play against combined schools uh that showed the quality of cricket at that time thank definitely thank you Mr sza and I think um it shows that even though though we lost to the pet rights that year we were the better team coming out
Of the Season no yeah I always tell Bernard that I had to give him some cause for celebration you know he’s claimed to fame it’s it’s it’s it’s not about who laughs first it’s about two laughs last and we had the last laugh if I to say it I’m
I’m joking um being a Josephine it just uh I’ve been told not to make any banter but it just it’s not uh letting me be myself if not um Mr vij Tunga if I to come back to you um how was it like 50 years ago in 1975 versus 2024 we see the
Glamour of the media we see the glamour of big sponsors coming in we see the glamour of uh um watching your replays in case you missed your first Wicket uh live on pap and and other media networks as well how was it like in 1975 versus what you see right now well
In 1975 it was the first uh limited over match amongst all schools and uh we played it at Dal road which was a josephian h ground and uh I my team comprised a lot of raaga players Frank huberts Angelo vikat is more raaga players than cricketers but they all
Fine team people you know teammates so on that day when we won the St Joseph won the toss and decided to bat uh we decided to try and restrict them to much as much as possible so with the Wicket in the first ball we managed to restrict
Them to 112 which was not much in a 50 game and when we went when we went to bat we lost a couple of wickets and we were struggling and I sent a message from I was batting at that time and I sent a message to the Pavilion to get
One Angelo vikat famous rer player to P up I didn’t want him to come to bat but I wanted him to P up which he did and I got run out at the bowlers end unfortunately backing up too far and when I was walking back to the Pavilion
I saw Angelo coming and he asked me Skipper what to do I said go and have a bang and the first ball he put into the into the swimming pool and that changed the entire complexion of the game and we won with five wickets to spare and
Although St Joseph ended up as school Champions that year uh and they were a good side we managed to beat them with a good team and a team effort this is all a team game individual performance don’t matter much in this game so if you play as a
Team and you play together you’re definitely going to win that’s what it’s all about great word spoken um by the pet R captain from 1975 what an eloquently worded uh message um before we let you two gentlemen enjoy uh the rest of the proceedings for the press
Conference I’d like to know your parting words to the captains and the teams and and the young josephians and pet right watching yes recent International matches I have seen the the captain one Captain being suspended for arguing with the Umpire we were thought at during our time the
Umpire’s word is law whether it’s right or wrong you go but now I see the present International matches they are standing and arguing with the third Empire they are referring when it’s referred to the third Empire they’re saying that’s when he says not out they
Seem to argue which is wrong you know so the match referee our time there were no match referees and all that they must take strict action I think two matches is not enough they must suspend them for the whole series you know and play the game in the correct Spirit that’s what
It’s all about we learned a lot of things by playing Cricket losing is one a part of it winning is a part of it but that teaches you what the ups and downs in life so you must be able to take up defeat that’s the main thing in my
Opinion winning is a part of the game losing also is a part of the game so you play it in the correct Spirit that’s the main thing in this whole game that we play called Cricket thank you very much Mr sza what about you yeah I think uh my
My advice would be that um both you captains are captain in two great schools with great traditions and great records behind us and this is the 50th encounter for the 550 and the 90th encounter for the Jed um you must remember that through the years both schools have um you know played with
Great tradition and there’s a culture that has been created between the big mat schools the the battle of the Saints and the culture is really the spirit of the game and the teachings you have from the from the from both schools so my parting advice is May the best team win
