Yeah good morning to you Jackie the suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Christian Ivan SoDo take a look at your screen right now because police released this mug shot of him earlier this morning and they confirmed SoDo is facing several charges including murder intent to kill and home invasion
With a dangerous weapon now the victims in this case range from 15 to 63 years of age and the attacks happened at several locations around the Rockford area according to authorities not all of the 11 victims were stabbed and none of them were shot the crime spree started
Around 1:15 yesterday afternoon as a home invasion a woman was injured during a stabbing along with a Good Samaritan who tried to help her the whole thing ended with the suspect in in police custody around 135 investigators confirmed a postal service worker is among those killed a woman who lives in
The area tells us it was her longtime mailman Witnesses say he may have been hit by a pickup mail carrier he was the kindest person he would help anybody would step in and help always friendly we will miss him I think like most Rock 4ans just totally shaken by uh
This act of violence and the impact that it’s having now on multiple families lives now we expect to learn more details about this very deadly and tragic case later this morning at 11:30 during a news conference with authorities again the suspect SoDo is expected in court at 1:30 this afternoon
Right now it’s still not clear why he did this or if he knew any of the victims in this case we know that a vigil will be held for those victims later this afternoon at 2:30 and the City of Rockford is offering support and counseling services for anyone who lives
In the neighborhood where the attacks happened we’re live in the control room Mugo uay CBS J news Mugo thank you so much we’re also learning about the deadly stabbing of a Walmart employee in Rockford so the victim is identified as 18-year-old high school student Jason Jenkins according to the police report
Witnesses say 28-year-old Timothy Carter wandered around the store on Sunday holding knives sometime later Jenkins was stabbed in his back Witnesses also report hearing Carter utter racial slurs he’s now facing first-degree murder charges police say the two men did not know each other now to a deadly shooting
Overnight in Gage Park Chicago Police responded to the call just after midnight near 57th in Cristiana when officers got there they found the victim unresponsive in a white car he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later died CPD is trying to figure out what led up to that
Shooting as they search for who did it the Illinois Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal from actor Jesse Smet Smet was convicted of lying to police about being the victim of a hate crime after orchestrating a staged attack his attorney say the conviction violated an agreement reached with Cook County
Prosecutors that agreement included dropping the case if he performed community service it’s not clear when arguments could begin well right now a city council committee is considering a big change in how to keep track of migrants in Chicago shelters CBS News alel Rai is at City Hall this morning
Where that meeting just got underway soell what do we remember so far yeah Jackie that meeting starting within the last couple of minutes and they’re going to be discussing and possibly voting on a new order that if it passes it would require the Department of Family and support
Services to count exactly how many new arrivals are evicted each day along with how many of them are put on notices to leave City shelters and they would also be required to put that information online to be available to the public now the committee on immigrant and Refugee
Rights plans to put that to a vote here today we know there’s a 60-day shelter limit policy and they’re focusing now on making sure that policy is being abided many migrants have been able to extend their stays as some of them are in the process of applying for City benefits
Others are staying extra because they have health related reasons this ordinance meeting comes as we know hundreds of migrants staying across five Chicago Park District facilities will be moved to other locations so that those Park sites can reopen to the public the mayor’s office saying those moves can
Happen and start as early as this Saturday right now there are about 10,3 50 migrants in 23 shelters across Chicago the city receiving over 37,900 new arrivals since 2022 Jackie we have learned a portion of today’s meeting discussing shelter conditions has been cancelled but that ordinance vote still in place again that meeting
Started the last few minutes at 10:00 we’re going to head upstairs to see exactly what’s happening we’ll bring you an update at 11: on channel 2 I’m live at City Hall Asel Rai CBS sounds good as thank you so much taking a live look outside right now on this
Thursday morning it’s still looking a little hazy or cloudy definitely not Sunny so let’s bring in meteorologist Ed Kern and Ed you were saying it this morning but the clouds just kind of moving in and out yeah and we have a little bit of sunshine making it through
The clouds and spots and out west and to calb here you can see nice breaks in the clouds so we’ll see a little bit more Sunshine as time goes on but it will be a mix of clouds and sun right now clouds for the most part at O’Hare 30 6°
Southwest wind at 7 mph temperatures across the area everybody’s pretty much in the same boat we’re pretty much in the mid 30s to upper 30s and today’s high comes into 52 degrees which is a seasonable high you expect to be right around 52 degrees this time of year 54
Tomorrow with clouds that increases we had had later in the day for tomorrow but uh today will be a great day around Chicago tomorrow not only do we get to about 54 at O’Hare but we get to the mid 60s as you work your way well Inland a
Breeze off the lake holds temps down near the lake to about 47 degrees we’ll tell you about the weekend forecast the Easter forecast coming up and the forecast for the Cubs home opener on Monday as well in just a little bit Jackie all right Ed sounds good thanks
So much turning now to the Illinois Primary Election and the ongoing ballot count so more than 20 800 more votes have been tallied and added to Chicago’s unofficial results that means that right now just over 388,000 votes have been counted the Board of Elections will process more provisional ballots today
More than 53,000 provisional ballots have not been returned and the Board of Elections does not expect any of them to come in and be properly postmarked by the April 2nd deadline the outstanding ballots could still swing the race for County State’s Attorney eileene O’Neal Burke is leading Clayton Harris by less
Than 2,000 votes meaning that right now this race is still too close to call if former Governor Pat Quinn gets his way the funding of new stadiums for the Bears and the white socks will be up for a vote I’m proposing a uh referendum for the people of Chicago to vote on whether
Or not uh state or local taxpayer money should be used to build a state Stadium for the Chicago Bears or the Chicago White Socks the Bears want a covered stadium that would could also host other major events like the Super Bowl or the final four the team has talked with the
City about a new stadium on the lakefront and the white socks have released renderings for a new ballpark on undeveloped land in the South Loop near Roosevelt and Clark oh we’re just hours away from the return of baseball season the Cubs are getting their season started on the road Against the World
Series champs in Dallas but the Outsiders are throwing out their first pitch right here at home at guaranteed right field and that’s where we find our Marissa Pearlman happy opening day to you the baseball magic is certainly in the air we are here in the exfinity kids zone

From somebody like you a professional that’s crazy professional former professional oh once and always right thank you thank you okay so what’s the secret you were telling the V over the C okay so when you when you play catch you have to start with the grip and what we
Teach the kids all the time is where you can find that letter C for the small kids make a W for the big kids like us make a V and put that V over the C and make sure your thumb is underneath if you’ve got that let me see it that’s a
Secret all right you have a chance to throw a ball straight fast and far cuz you will have a for te grip so we’re going to see how this works okay see how we do it all right Mike Over the Sea V Over the Sea now we

White Sox player what the current coaches are teaching in the minor leagues but really kind of breaking it down for the little kids and just understand some of these buzzwords phrases like the V overse so these kids just have a chance for a little bit more success picking up their skills a White

Historically black sororities so an English teacher who put it together says that she saw success when she did a similar program at another school it is something that I had done at a previous school that I worked at and we had turned it into an annual show as a
Tribute to all the organizations of the Divine ey and I really wanted to bring that here because it was something that our students hadn’t really been exposed to something students have family members who are active in those sororities and say it made them feel closer to them others said it teaches

We uh can break up the clouds a little bit downtown and get more and more sunshine in our day we have 36 degrees right now we have a Southwest wind that’s running at 7 mph and we’re looking at a high today that comes in at low 50s which is typical for this time
Of year and we’ll see more Sunshine as we move through the afternoon hours and the white socks throughout the first pitch tomorrow 54 degrees and uh tomorrow we’ll see clouds on the increase so the breeze off Lake Michigan will hold down temperatures if you’re near the lake if you’re well Inland

To vote on a proposed ordinance about migrant shelter evictions if passed it would require the Department of Family and support services to count how many new arrivals are evicted each day as well as how many migrants were put on notice the city would make that data available
Online all right and let’s move on now to a federal appeals court that has kept Texas’s new immigration law on hold which would allow the state to arrest and Deport migrants suspected of illegally crossing the border the Supreme Court May ultimately decide if the state has that power Texas has
Already mounted an aggressive border operation and because of that more migrants are attempting to cross the border in Arizona taking a much more dangerous route our Cameo Montoya Galvez got a firsthand look from above out here there is nothing this desolate stretch of the Arizona border is one of the deadliest for migrants
Each day federal agents take to the skies their search for people in distress often turns into a rescue mission you’ve had to rescue migrants oh absolutely and children too oh children women older folks in its latest annual count border patrol reported a record 895 migrant deaths 142 of them here in

More hostile to migrants the number of people crossing in Arizona has soared most are looking to claim Asylum how long was the journey from Nepal it’s take too long why did you come political problem political problems in Nepal yes in Texas migrant Crossings have plunged by over 50% since
Late last year now more than 60% of all border crossings are occurring in Arizona and California governor Abbott has credited his policies for that Geographic shift if you will is that accurate hard to say it’s a could it have had some impact sure uh is it is it
The the one Panacea that’s caused that’s corrected the problem I don’t think that’s a fair statement officials worried the warmer weather will bring more migration and deaths nobody wants to see someone die that is the absolute worst part of this job but unfortunately one they’re seeing more often camil

That number has only grown over the past several years well the College of DuPage and Glenn Ellen is bumping its tuition cost by eight bucks per credit hour despite the higher price tag the school’s rates are still below the average compared to other instate community colleges School trustees say
The higher cost is necessary to cover a recent pay increase for the staff well now turning to Lake County where residents are saying goodbye to a preschool that’s been in business for 75 years The Daily heral Herald reports that the cause of this was lack of enrollment which dropped during the
Pandemic right now the school has 18 students with two teachers that will close at the end of the school year and then hold a picnic in May for all of its former students well March Madness means basketball ball to most people but CBS 2 likes to build a bracket around food

Didn’t see your name on that list but I wouldn’t be surprised if you make an appearance right she’s got my tape right all right a enough s enough set okay all right A View From guaranteed ra field and you could see out there that we have
Some clouds in the distance and we have spring flowers struggling to come up around the area and 36° a little chilly out there Southwest winds at 7 m an hour currently today more Sunshine as we go through our day with temperatures that top out in the low 50s and we’re looking
Tomorrow for 54 degrees after today is 52 de 54 tomorrow seasonable temperatures you ought to be right around 52 this time of year so high temperatures tomorrow are going to have a spread uh 47 at the lakefront 54 O’Hare but all the way to the mid6 60s
Or so as you get well Inland away from the influence of This breeze coming in off of Lake Michigan so we’ve taken a look at uh temperatures over the next couple days that are seasonable Saturday we’re looking at 60° with maybe some morning showers some heavier rain comes through overnight
Friday to Saturday and then Sunday for Easter a nice day 50° but we could develop some afternoon showers around the area so your 7day forecast uh shows an increase in rain as we get to Easter afternoon and into Monday with temperatures that drop off near the end
Of the 7-Day period but then climb after that uh beyond the 7-Day period uh when we’re watching Monday which is the Cubs home opener we have 53 degrees a typical temperature but we also have a chance for showers and storms Jackie well we are keeping our Opening Day Celebrations rolling this morning

Finally here that was a long off season it really was a long off season especially for the Cubs who just barely missed the playoffs last last year do you feel like the expectations are higher for this team coming into this season with so many questions answered
Last season I really do I mean they won 83 games last year and for me I believe Cubs fans should feel like the rebuild is over that doesn’t mean that young prospects aren’t still coming but you shouldn’t have rebuilding expectations you should have winning the National League central in a very average
Division this year the Cubs in my eyes are the favorite to win the division and I think you should be thinking about winning a playoff series listen there’s there’s a lot of progress being made I could see how this team potentially worst case scenario wins only 83 games
Last year but I could also see this team going as high as as 90 and getting into the postseason and making a little bit of noise I think cubs fans should view this as this is a postseason bound team not a team in the middle of a rebound uh
Or rebuild I guess you would say the last couple of Seasons there’s there’s much more hope this year no question about it that’s that’s that is good news for Cubs fans for sure a lot of familiar faces of course in the clubhouse a lot of fans really glad to see Cody
Bellinger signed in the off season who do you expect to have breakout seasons and who do you really expect to just hold down the team this year well I think when you mentioned Cody Bellinger that was the biggest thing that happened this offseason was getting him back at
At this point last year you didn’t know what he was going to be now you know he can be back to that player that was at an MVP level with the Dodgers you hope he can hold it down you hope Dan Dansby Swanson can hold it down Nico hor at
Second base up the middle this team is really really good defensively and offensively I think seya Suzuki might be the exactor for the team he was great at the end of the season last year he had a spectacular spring he led the team with six home runs and I know Cactus League
Stats don’t mean anything but it’s the way the guy was carrying himself around Arizona it’s the way he was approaching his at bat it’s the way his teammates are talking about him he’s healthy are we going to see a full season out of SE Suzuki and will it be that level he was
Playing at at the end of last year if so that’s an Allstar level and that greatly changes the Outfield it greatly changes the Cubs lineup and a big season from SE Suzuki could signal a big season for the Cubs absolutely uh let’s talk about another potential X Factor do you see
Now the the highest paid manager in Major League Baseball cig Council in his first season with the Cubs do you see him being an xor X Factor for this team in like you said not just making the playoffs but really making a run in the playoffs boy that’s the uh seven or
Eight million dollar question right highest paid manager in all of baseball uh they moved their buddy David Ross to the side said listen we’ve got to do this this is the best manager in baseball he’s available they brought him in I don’t know how many wins a good
Really good manager is worth in baseball we may find out this season Cubs put a lot of money into getting Craig Council one thing we know he does very well is manage bullpens the Cubs had beefed up their Bullpen it was a big problem that
Failed at the end of last season it was overworked and council is known as a guy who does wonders with figuring out the right guy to bring in when to bring him in and how long to leave him in so I think that’s where we’re going to see
The biggest impact from Craig council is is working the Bullpen this year and you know there’s room for improvement there so we’re going to find out how much of a difference he makes I some people say three four five wins well let let’s let’s find out I’m excited opening day
Always brings some uh optimistic opportunities for a lot of teams and talk about opportunities on this opening day the Cubs taking on the defending World Series champion Rangers in Texas how big of a challenge is that and and how can that really set the tone for this
Team well you know I don’t think if you go out and get swept by the Rangers I don’t think the season’s over that that part is true but when you have Justin Steel on the mount you can go out and you can make a little statement and
Build a little buzz before you get back to Wrigley that’s never a bad thing keep in mind you know halfway through the season or even at the end of last season there weren’t too many people saying it was going to be the Diamondbacks and the Rangers in the World Series baseball’s a
Funny sport there are six playoff spots in the National League the Cubs just have to get one one of them I don’t care if that’s as division champ that’s what it should be or if it’s as a wild card as the Diamondbacks came in they were one game behind those Diamond Backs last
Year so the Cubs can be going into this season thinking listen there was a game difference between us missing the postseason and US potentially going all the way to the World Series I think there’s big optimism on the team Why not start big by beating the defending World
Series champs that would be fun that would be fun uh and speaking of fun let’s talk about what you guys are doing for opening day today you guys got a little watch party celebration happening right yeah we do we’ll be down at uh Country Club which is a bar right on

Great day we will we will all right that was Luke STM with ch Geo Cubs so thank you so much Cubs and Rangers getting underway tonight at 6:35 all right Northwest Indiana is growing the times of Northwest Indiana reports that Lake County’s population last year was more than half a million
People for the first time since 1982 that was when the steel industry collapsed and people left the area to find better jobs elsewhere the region was just shy of the half million Mark in 2022 well most gigantic jackpots for games like Mega Millions in Powerball have happened in just the last two years
After Lottery organizers made the games much harder to win Americans are now spending record amounts on all types of lottery games so how did the come to play such a big role in our lives Brooke Silva Braga looks into that every day in more than 40 States millions of Americans wait for their
Numbers to come up one minute one minute mic check thank you just last year more than $100 billion was spent on the lottery the first ball up that’s more than concerts movies books and streaming services combined bind give me two set for life and that money pours into places like honeybee convenience a
So-called lucky store in Staten Island New York and you play to make money you play because it’s fun I play pay bills four lottery players have become millionaires here 71 many others have tried do you have a a daily budget yeah I have a daily budget no more than 50 a
Day no more than 50 a day how’s business for the lottery as good as it’s ever been Jonathan Cohen’s history of the American lottery for a dollar and a dream is a story of misplaced hope another one no one starting with the politicians Who legalized the lottery in
The 1960s cash poor states noticed the mob was making a killing on illegal gambling and saw an opportunity New Jersey Congressman Cornelius Gallagher argued if this Revenue could be channeled to the state through a daily lottery we could Abandon All taxation in New Jersey and increase every service in
Our state four times over that was the argument used to make the lottery happen that’s right while that windfall never arrived help with the budget Remains the Lottery’s key selling point the California Lottery has raised more than $37 billion for California’s Public Schools that’s true over nearly four
Decades but the fine print reveals in any one year the lottery covers less than 1 and a half% of the state school budget and after studying years of res resarch on the subject Cohen argues the lottery is largely funded by a small group of heavy players and that group is
Disproportionately less educated lower income non-white uh and male some of these guys come in here and they play like 4500 they got like a grocery list but State budgets now count on this money and in Lottery Commission meetings across the country we found States not just allowing their citizens to gamble
But constantly searching for ways to increase their play we’re seeing a trend that is concerning flat to declining uh revenues there I know that we’re working on this scratch off sales were down $12 million that continues to be alarming and that’s one of the things that we’re
Really looking at we have seen some weakness in scrap celles we’ve made some adjustments to our game plan and we’ll see if we see an impact from those changes you’d expect that at like a board meeting of MGM Las Vegas casino you don’t expect that of like government
Officials seeing that it’s a problem that people in their state are not gambling enough Brian owire is the chairman of the New York Gaming Commission which runs the nation’s largest Lottery should the government not only be allowing but in the case of New York State spending $90 million a year advertising encouraging their
Citizens to gamble is that the role of the government it is the role of the government it could be somebody else it has been somebody else it’s been the mafia why are we spending money because it’s good for New Yorkers to re Seasons good for New Yorkers for Education good
For New Yorkers because we’ve taken away the profit motive of illegal gambling people look at who’s gambling and disproportionately these lotteries are funded by people on the lower end of the income Spectrum does that concern you at all I don’t think it really shows particularly the lottery does not really
Show that that people in the lower income are really abusing the lottery so some researchers say that is the case if you became convinced that was the case would you differently what I would be more inclined to do is to address the problem of problem gambling I think that’s the
Answer that that we have to be cognizant of and we are New York like many states directs a small share of Lottery money to problem gambling prevention but Cohen says the Lottery’s continuing success each year selling more than the last all right I could try next time tells us
Something deeper about these games appeal you know there’s this old phrase that a lotteries stupid tax or attacks on people who are bad at math and I think that’s totally unfair I think a lot of Lottery players sort of reason that they don’t have a chance maybe not
Even at wealth at sort of financial stability and the lottery even if it’s one in 22.2 million offered some chance mathematically irrational but sort of culturally socially politically economically makes total sense can’t win if you don’t play that’s right and somebody’s got to win it might as well
