Coming to Dallas next weekend. It’s not only fun to watch but brings impact in our North Texas community. Joining us this morning is Rocky Turner A K A Rock T good morning, Rocky Man. What’s going on? My brother? Everything good. Everything’s good. We were talking about, we’re wondering if the rock,
Like the wrestler of the rock is watching us because the UFL is getting started today. But we’re gonna have the Rock T actually on the show. So two different rocks happening here this morning. OK. You’re with ST Wars. So tell us about it. Why was it started?
And what can we expect uh This uh this coming time when it comes up here in Dallas? Wow, this is amazing. Star Wars is the biggest youth stepping competition and movement in the entire country. Man. We’ve helped over 12,000 kids graduate high school through the art of stepping
And uh started it about 16 years ago when I got invited to host a high school step competition. And when I got there, there was this 14 year old girl on the side crying and I was like, what’s wrong? She just found out that she was pregnant and she
Felt like she had to drop out of school, go get a job. Uh Her mother was on drugs. Her father was in jail. She was being raised by her grandmother. So I did whatever I could to try to motivate her to not drop out of school. But she ended up dropping out.
Her principal called me a couple of weeks later saying she came back to school and I asked her, why did you come back? And she said I missed my step team. That was the only positive thing in my life at the moment and I missed my step team. So that was my,
That was the motivation to use my influence to create something special for her. Thousands of other kids going through similar situations to that young lady. So that was the birth of ST Wars going on 17 years now. Um
It’s become the super bowl of youth step and so its a family event all ages can come. We gonna have a good time. It’s gonna be exciting. OK. So we got some video that’s playing over this interview right now. Uh Folks are kind of watching the dance moves here.
Explain to us what, what stepping really is for those who don’t know what it is. Yep. So if you’re familiar with great fraternities and sororities, that’s kind of how stepping got real popular in college campuses. A lot of it are divine nine organizations but stepping has been around for hundreds of years.
It started in African Villages years ago, it used to be called Gumboot dancing. So if you took cheerleading and break dancing and they got married and had a baby that would be stepping and these kids are expressing themselves, giving themselves a voice making music with their bodies.
It’s an amazing thing to see if you’ve never seen it. If you’ve never been to star for. I urge you, I promise you to come check it out, bring the entire family. You have an amazing time. Awesome. And you guys are working with the black women’s Wall Street for this event.
Can you tell us more about them? And then obviously their involvement with the uh the event? Absolutely. Uh The, the CEO and founder Jaco J, she’s an amazing woman who doing some great things in the community. Black Women’s Wall Street is a nonprofit organization that focuses on helping black women start their businesses.
And they have an annual cohort that runs from June through Se timber every year where ladies get in depth training on business plans, legal tax issues, marketing, and much more black women’s Wall Street women of color. Uh You definitely need to find out some more information about that.
They’re doing some amazing things and we’re honored to partner with them. OK. And then last question here, Rock t uh the organization is giving away 5000 for a business plan competition, right? Tell us more about that so people can get involved and they can enter in the contest. Yes, absolutely.
So the black women’s Wall Street wanted to create a contest, a real fun contest to allow black women an easy way to secure funding because we all know sometimes that can be tough to get that funding to support your business idea. And all you have to do is submit a business plan.
This is the great part about this situation. There is no need to pitch your idea. It’s just a second video. Just make a quick 32nd video on how and why you use your money and what you need it for. And that’s it. And you get the opportunity to win that
