Cleveland, OH – On August 2, 2024, during Delta Tau Delta’s biannual international convention, Karnea, Shawn Powers, a Senior at the University of Georgia, was elected as the second-ever Student Director on the fraternity’s governing board, the Arch Chapter. This historic election took place in front of over 500 Delts, including undergraduates, alumni, and guests from over 126 chapters.
The position of Student Director was first established during the 2022 Karnea in Norfolk, Virginia, to enhance undergraduate representation on the Fraternity’s board of directors. The Student Director also serves as the chair of the Undergraduate Council, a body of 12 undergraduate representatives that are a vital link between the undergraduate members and the Arch Chapter. The Council ensuring that the voices and concerns of active collegiate brothers are heard at the highest levels of the Fraternity.
Shawn Powers, from Auburn, Georgia, is in his second term as the president of The University of Georgia’s Beta Delta chapter. According to Chapter Advisor Jody Danneman, “Shawn has been an exemplary leader throughout his time in the fraternity. His election is a testament to his dedication, leadership, and commitment to the values of Delta Tau Delta.”
Shawn has previously been recognized with the President of the Year award by UGA’s Greek Life Office and the Outstanding Chapter President Award from Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Under his leadership, Beta Delta won the prestigious Court of Honor for being a top twenty chapter. It was the first time in over a decade Beta Delta was recognized with that honor.
Shawn expressed his excitement about beginning his role as Student Director on September 1, 2024. “It is an incredible honor to be elected as the second-ever Student Director, and I am eager to start working with the Arch Chapter to represent the interests of our undergraduate brothers. I’m particularly excited about the opportunity to visit our newly opened chapter at Florida International University in Miami this November. The chance to witness the growth of our brotherhood firsthand is something I’m looking forward to immensely,” Shawn said.
Shawn’s election not only marks a significant personal achievement but also brings recognition to the University of Georgia and the Beta Delta chapter of Delta Tau Delta. His leadership and dedication will continue to make a lasting impact on the fraternity at both the national and chapter levels.
