Phi Delta Theta Inducts Ron Cey “the Penguin” into Sports Hall of Fame

Phi Delta Theta has a very proud history in the world of sports. Be it amateur, collegiate, or professional athletics, many Phis have made an impact as players, coaches, managers, and fans alike. For this reason, the Phi Delta Theta Sports Hall of Fame was created in 2010. To be enshrined in the Phi Delta Theta Sports Hall of Fame, an alumnus must have (1) had an impact on the world of sports, and (2) exhibited the Fraternity’s Cardinal Principles along the way. Past inductees include a who’s who of sports, including greats like Lou Gehrig and Tom Harmon.

During the 85th Biennial Convention, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity inducted Ron Cey, Washington State ’70, into the Phi Delta Theta Sports Hall of Fame.

Ron Cey, known as “The Penguin” for his distinctive running style, was a key figure in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ success during the 1970s and early ’80s. A reliable third baseman, Cey was known for his power at the plate and solid defense.

Cey played seventeen seasons in MLB, spending the majority of his career with the Dodgers (1971–1982). He helped lead the Dodgers to three World Series titles (1974, 1977, 1978) and was a major contributor to their 1981 championship. He earned NLCS MVP honors after hitting two home runs and driving in six runs.

A six-time All-Star, Cey hit 316 home runs and drove in 1,139 RBIs over his career. He was a powerful middle-of-the-order hitter, known for his ability to drive in runs. While his bat was a big part of his game, Cey also earned a reputation as a dependable fielder at third base, finishing his career with a .953 fielding percentage.

In 1982, Cey was recognized by Phi Delta Theta with the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, presented annually to an MLB player who best exemplifies the legacy of Brother Lou Gehrig.

Cey’s defense and consistency made him one of the best third basemen of his era. After retiring, he remained a beloved figure in the Dodgers community, his legacy cemented as one of the team’s most respected players.

Cey’s contributions to the Dodgers’ success remain an important chapter in the franchise’s storied history.
