In October, the apples in New England are some of the best in the world.

Alas, the apples in this bowl are nine months old and from 3000 miles away. I found them sitting in a forlorn corner of a hotel gym in Cape Cod.
Why source lousy apples? Because theyâre not being hired to be good apples. Instead, theyâre chosen to be convenient, reliable and a bit of decoration. Reliably there day after day, but not to create delight, build a reputation or support the local economy.
When we name it, we can figure out if itâs what we actually want. Most of the status quo persists, unnamed, because itâs easier than untangling what weâre actually trying to accomplish.
The Knot helps us see the baggage weâre unconsciously carrying around. If youâre feeling stuck, thatâs the first step on the road to making something better.
