It’s Election Season: Choosing Your Chapter’s Next Leaders
Your Chapter’s Future Starts with Leadership
Election Day serves as a reminder of the importance of civic engagement. It also serves as a reminder of our Fraternity’s own form of democracy: the opportunity to choose the leaders who will guide our chapters forward. The brothers elected today will set priorities, shape chapter culture, and help determine the experience of every member in the year ahead. As campuses enter election season and leadership transitions begin, now is the time to consider how you can make an impact.
Leadership in Phi Delta Theta is not reserved for a select few. The strongest officers are often those who care deeply about their chapter, are committed to helping others succeed, and are willing to learn along the way. Whether your strengths lie in organization, recruitment, communication, finances, or mentorship, there is a role where you can contribute.
Why Lead Your Chapter?
Serving as a chapter officer is one of the most meaningful ways to leave a lasting impact on your chapter. Officers gain valuable experience in leadership, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making while helping guide the future of the brotherhood.
More importantly, officers live out the Cardinal Principles through action. Every meeting planned, event organized, member supported, and goal achieved contributes to a stronger chapter experience for current and future brothers.
The benefits extend well beyond your collegiate years. Chapter officers develop skills that translate directly to future careers, including leading teams, conducting effective meetings, managing budgets, balancing competing priorities, meeting deadlines, and communicating with a wide range of alumni and stakeholders. These experiences not only strengthen your résumé but also help prepare you for leadership opportunities long after graduation.
A New Opportunity: Membership Development Chairman
This year, chapters have an exciting new leadership opportunity through the position of Membership Development Chairman.
This role is designed to strengthen the member experience by encouraging brothers to engage in the many developmental opportunities available through Phi Delta Theta. From attending conferences and leadership programs to participating in Rising Phi and other educational experiences, the membership development chairman helps ensure members are taking advantage of opportunities that prepare them to lead both within and beyond the chapter.
Brothers who are passionate about mentorship, personal growth, and helping others maximize their Phi Delta Theta experience may find this position especially rewarding.
Leadership Is Service
No matter the title, every officer position shares the same purpose: serving the chapter and helping brothers succeed.
Great leaders listen before they speak. They put the needs of the chapter ahead of their own. They help others grow, encourage involvement, and lead by example. The most successful officer teams work together to create an environment where every member can thrive.
As elections approach, think carefully about how your talents and interests can contribute to your chapter’s success. The leadership experience you gain today may shape the opportunities you pursue tomorrow.
Additional Opportunities for Chapter Leaders
This academic year offers several unique opportunities for newly-elected chapter leaders to develop their skills and represent their chapter on a larger stage.
McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference
Held in January, the McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference brings together chapter leaders from across North America to learn, share ideas, and strengthen their leadership capabilities. Registration is now open for chapter presidents, recruitment specialists, and vice presidents (by invitation).
General Convention 2027
Next June, brothers from across the Fraternity will gather in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for General Convention.
Every chapter is expected to send a voting delegate to represent its members. Delegates play a vital role in shaping the future of Phi Delta Theta through discussions and decisions that impact the Fraternity as a whole. Beyond its governance responsibilities, convention provides valuable opportunities to connect with brothers and alumni from across North America, exchange ideas, develop leadership skills, and experience the broader reach of our brotherhood.
Don’t Forget to Report New Officers in myPhiDelt
Once elections and transitions are complete, chapters should promptly update their officer roster in myPhiDelt. Maintaining accurate leadership information ensures newly elected officers receive important communications, resources, and support from General Headquarters.
Timely reporting also helps create a smooth transition between outgoing and incoming leaders, positioning your chapter for success from day one.
Step Forward
Every chapter’s future is shaped by the brothers who choose to lead.
As officer elections begin across Phi Delta Theta, we encourage every member to consider how they can serve. Whether you’re running for president, treasurer, recruitment chairman, membership development chairman, or another leadership role, your willingness to step forward can make a lasting difference.
