Mid-Fall 2026 Update from General Council President Nat Love

An important message regarding our commitment to the health and safety of our members and campus communities

Brothers,

I do not doubt that many of you are aware of the recent incidents involving fraternal organizations on campuses across the country. This fall, the public has seen horrific examples of hazing, substance misuse, and sexual misconduct. Actions like these go directly against Phi Delta Thetaโ€™s values and serve as a reminder that they can affect the trust placed in fraternities by students, families, campus partners, and communities, and ultimately our ability to fulfill our mission.

Phi Delta Theta remains steadfast in our belief that our values and the health and safety of our undergraduates and communities will consistently guide our decision-making. When concerns arise, early intervention, transparency, and a willingness to seek help are essential to preventing harm.

I want to thank the chapters that are already having these conversations. Whether through participation in National Hazing Prevention Week, hosting educational programs like Take Action: Building New Traditions, engaging with university resources, or simply creating space for honest dialogue among brothers, your commitment to leadership matters. Those efforts reflect what I know to be true about Phi Delta Theta. Across our Fraternity, brothers, volunteers, and alumni are committed to building strong chapters, supporting one another, and creating meaningful experiences that positively shape lives. Fraternity remains a powerful force for friendship, personal development, and lifelong support when we are intentional about living our values. I remain confident in the character of our Brotherhood and in our shared commitment to upholding our values, supporting one another, and preserving the life-changing opportunities that fraternity provides.

At the same time, there is more work to do.

For decades, Phi Delta Theta has invested in programs designed to equip members with the skills and confidence needed to recognize risk, take action, and support one another. These efforts include unified Phikeia education, anti-hazing education, Real Response, Good Samaritan and Amnesty policies, annual bystander intervention education, and our longstanding commitment to alcohol-free housing.

This year, we are building on that commitment by expanding our bystander intervention programming to include conversations about:

  • Digital responsibility and awareness
  • Substance use and misuse
  • Sexual misconduct prevention
  • Practical intervention strategies for everyday situations

Being a Phi Delt means having the courage to step in when something isnโ€™t right. It means making responsible decisions both in person and online. It means supporting one another and being willing to seek help when needed. It means recognizing that leadership isnโ€™t demonstrated only in moments of success, but in the choices we make every day when nobody is watching.

I encourage every undergraduate member to complete this yearโ€™s bystander intervention education in myPhiDelt by October 30, 2026. For all members, including our volunteers, advisers, and alumni, I encourage you to engage in conversations and identify opportunities to contribute positively to your campus community. Whether through education, partnership, accountability, or support, each of us has a role to play.

Donโ€™t wait for something bad to happen at your chapter. Be prepared. Our culture is reflected in our behaviors, not words, and needs to reflect our values.

The future of Phi Delta Theta will be defined by our continued commitment to Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude.

Yours in the Bond,

Nat J. Love
Phi Delta Theta General Council President
